Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *

Yes, TFA was safe but so was Rogue One and they’re both good films. But lets not forget that JJ wrote the script as well so I’m sure a lot of the safe aspects of the film were due to him and Disney.

Rogue One is hardly “risky”, but it’s considerably moreso than TFA.
TFA is the blockbuster equivalent of Oscar bait; checking requirements off a list to ensure lots of money/awards.
Rogue One at least told an interesting story we hadn’t seen before.
TLJ will be very telling as to the general direction of new Star Wars. I’m willing to dismiss TFA as JJ’s fanboy vanity project if TLJ does anything worthwhile.

Too bad the way the films were written and shot don’t reflect that, Lucas’ later cinematic mutilations and claims to the contrary nontwithstanding.

Please quote where I said he was adamant on this stance the second the cameras began rolling for ANH in '76, because I don’t recall doing so.
His decision to turn it into a 6 part saga was at least the moment he titled ESB “Episode V” in the crawl.
His decision to tie everything closer together was at least in '97 when he made the first SE.
I never said it was his grand plan all along, I just said that’s the way it is post '97, and taking the six part saga post 97 if we include the special editions (which is the point), then yes, it’s a six part saga that is meant to flow together.

I don’t know why every discussion like this has to spawn yet more countless “Lucas is an idiot” comments. We’re all very aware that many people here feel that way, but it contributes nothing to the conversation at all.
It’s not some subjective idea to be argued over whether or not Lucas wants I - VI to be considered one long story, it is a fact that Lucas wants I - VI to be considered one long story. You don’t have to agree, but that’s not the point.

Which version/release of the Star Wars movies do you watch and why?

is there really a reason i should watch harmy’s instead of SSE ?

Just depends how nuts you are about this stuff.
Most of us here have watched dozens of different versions of all the films and have our preferences, but I can’t say the general population of SW fans do the same.
Considering you’re already here though you may as well check them out, the worst that can happen is you won’t like them I guess?

What was George Lucas's worst decision with the Star Wars franchise?

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say making the SEs was his worse decision, not just burying the originals.

It was the beginning of the slippery slope that brought us both the current state of the SEs, the absence of the original cuts from the public domain, and the dismal quality of the prequel movies.

If he hadn’t decided that the OT films were incomplete pictures, he would have had to make prequels that were compatible with the existing narrative and style. Instead, not only did he modify the aesthetic of the originals to match his vision for what became the prequels, having already opened the Pandora’s box, he went ahead and made further changes as he was completing the PT instead of ensuring continuity in style and story telling through PT production alone.

In away, his decision to make the SEs damaged both parts of his saga.

That’s one way to look at it, but I still don’t think think there’s anything wrong with him wanting to make an SE. In fact the 2006 Limited Edition DVDs would have been perfect if the theatrical disc had been looked after to the same extent as the SE disc. Cut the film in half and have Jar Jar Binks singing at the camera for 60 minutes and it wouldn’t matter so long as the originals were available.
You can argue him going nuts with the SE caused the burying of the OOT, but that began well before the SE and he’d already done it with several of his films prior; SE or not he was never happy with the original films.

Disney made 2 billion dollars safe playing a movie that everyone lapped up.
Why on earth would they try to do anything legitimately new with VIII?
I can’t say I fault them from a business perspective but I do get a good chuckle every time someone thinks there’s a chance they’re going to do something radical and brilliant with the story.

I’m surprised to hear some people like the prequels more than the TFA/R1. Sure they haven’t really gone anywhere new yet, but I’d rather have filler with decent characters and writing than a “new story” that makes no sense and makes cringe multiple times.

Only a Sith deals in absolutes.

She has disappeared, my lord. One Naboo cruiser got past the blockade.

Am I doing this unrelated-Star-Wars-quote thing right?

It wasn’t unrelated ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It’s all about narrative.

Something you’re obviously overlooking.

The SE was to tie the OT more directly to the prequels (and in the case of '97 especially, test the technology for the prequels).
You can hate the prequels and think the SE is garbage, fine, but that’s not the point.
The point is that George said countless times that I - VI is meant to be one big long movie, with each “episode” being just a snippet of said story.
So in regards to the overall narrative, it makes perfect sense for the celebration scene to be in there because ROTJ is the end of this 12 hour long story; the climax that ties everything together.
You can say George is full of crap and that you hate it, but that’s not the point.
You can say it makes no sense if you just watch the OT by itself, but that’s not the point, because I - VI is one long story.

If you don’t like George’s view of “one big 12 hour movie”, watch the OOT and pretend nothing else exists, nobody is going to stop you.

Star Wars saga - Extra Extended Edition (1080p) (* unfinished project / WIP *)
Time

Don’t know if this has been brought up yet.
There’s a few frames cut from the final Duel of the Fates scene in TPM (Obi vs. Maul), where we see Maul do a twirl as the shields go down. This is not in the theatrical or home video release of the film, as the final product instead has a close up of the shields going down before Obi-Wan runs in, in place of Maul’s twirl.

It is however, on the title screen for the TPM video game (the load game screen icon):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYudNOKklII&feature=youtu.be

I’m willing to bet the video file for that short clip is on the disc. Whether the quality is acceptable or not is another matter though. I’d be happy to search it out if there’s interest, I have the game disc packed away in one of my boxes.

I think it’s probably more that the Rey toys were… popular?

Nuh-huh, Hasbro is actually just a big evil misogynistic empire out to get women, dinnityaknow?

Hasbro had as little clue about Rey being the force sensitive protagonist as the public did, obviously they’re going to produce more Finn merch if they think he’s the Jedi of the film.
The obsession with everything needing to be some ‘offensive’ conspiracy theory is ridiculous.

The stupidity of calling the lack of Rey toys sexist was only surpassed in stupidity by the racist comments floating around about John Boyega at the time; I’d say that was far more pressing of an issue than a mound of cheap plastic.

The fact that they’re illegal immigrants. Criminals.
Highlight a few cases of said criminals being sick does not change the fact that they came here illegally and thus fall under the banner of criminals.
If you start picking and choosing who you deem to be worse criminals based on their health, status, etc., you start heading down a slippery slope. Who gets to decide these things? At the end of the day they came here illegally and knew the consequences of being caught. Does the law not apply to them now because they’re sick? Does that mean the law doesn’t apply to actual US citizens if they’re sick too?
