4K restoration on Star Wars

What you need to bear in mind is that there really is little or no point having a 32" 4k resolution screen.

It's only when you get to larger screen sizes such as 50" / 65" / 80" / 103" / Edge Blended projection / Large Video walls and LED walls that 4k resolution comes in to play and really does add a noticeable difference.

I've just recently (as in the last few weeks) realized that I will be in the market for a new tv soon. Up until now, I hadn't even bothered thinking too much about 4k as a practical thing, but now I'm thinking....hmmmm.

So let's split the difference between the 32" and 50" sizes you mentioned above. Here's a Vizio 43" for $600.

http://www.amazon.com/VIZIO-M43-C1-43-Inch-Ultra-Smart/dp/B00T63YUTE/ref=sr_1_1?s=tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1432392483&sr=1-1

A comparable Vizio 42" 1080p set is only $150 less.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JJNA10I/ref=psdc_6459737011_t1_B00T63YUTE

I'm not being my usual snarky self, but asking honestly - wouldn't it make sense at such a small price difference to go with the 4k set?

I would go to a show room and see how you feel about it. But don't be afraid to ask them to show you a normal blu ray on a 4k set. Often they have these 4K CGI demo reels which is really not what you are going to be watching.

If you want my advice I would go for a OLED full HD set if your size that suits your space is in the 40's Inches range. And with the left over cash get a nice speaker system to go with it even if it's only a 2:1 system you will be really happy.

You need space to have something this large to enjoy it and that is something that a lot of people now days don't have...Also think about how far in distance you need to be from it and how many people it is trying to serve.

So 4k resolution is actually Borderline living room viewing really depending on how big your living room is.

you will still get a great picture at full HD on a 42" or 46" screen. Yes you can still transfer a source scan at a higher resolution and compress it better, sharper and cleaner but in reality it's only when the pixels become apparent as dots on a large screen we need a higher resolution to compensate for this.

If you have a small screen with 4000 pixels you would just as easily glance over it as a HD signal as the detail would be too small to discern unless you put on microscopic goggles.

How you pictured Anakin pre-PT
Time

I think it's probably the most Fatal error to make three films about a bloke who should have remained mysterious and a folklore legend in war time.

We never needed to know who he was what he did or where he went only what he became from vague recollections about him previously.

It fails on so many levels how they handled this aspect.

The question should really be... How did you picture Darth Vader before the mask came off revealing Sebastian Shaw?

And within that question you have a definitive conclusive answer contained within a question.

We should never have known who he really was but only we got to finally see what he looked like eventually. And even then we really know very little about him.

Scooby Doo springs to mind... At least they got it right.

Is it too much to ask for a movie that immediately makes me want to see it again? (and I mean exiting the theater and getting right back in line)

I can't wait....

That is exactly what happened when I went to see Return of the Jedi in the cinema although I was still fairly young (only 6 years old) and I distinctly remember nodding off after the speeder bike chase on the second time round :)

Probably all too much and past my bedtime :)

I had seen the others on the TV and was Star Wars Crazy... It would be great I agree to have that feeling back again I have not done that ever again as far as I can remember at the cinema.

Bonus Material You'd Like to See Released
Time

I have read various stories about a confrontation between Boba fett and IG88.

I think there was an idea that IG88 was trying to intercept and destroy Boba fett in Slave 1 in bespin orbit but he was blown to pieces by missiles from Slave 1. IG88 was attempting to destroy Boba and claim the bounty on the millenium falcon.

I doubt they filmed anything like this but if they did. absolutely want to see it.

There is a lot more empire strikes back alternate footage left to be released. It would be nice to see a workprint version even if low quality just to see all the stuff that got cut.

STAR WARS: EP V "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - 12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW
Time

There is something else about that side shot and it has to do with loss of color to the x-wing.

This shot had serious color problems so for the DVD they colored R2-D2 in but they did not properly restore the color to the x-wings red band on the engine and a yellow panel by the window.

There is also something else that I have been curious about and it has to do with the shot where Luke looks out the window of the x-wing.

Now the important thing to note is the sound R2-D2 makes at this time.

after the matte painting of Dagobah R2-D2 is shown in an external shot of the x-wing in the swamp again repeats the same sound or if you like says the same thing.

So I am not entirely sure about this but it could be that the shot of Luke looking out the window was meant to be spliced in to 2 shots rather than as it is in the film as we know it.

so there would be Luke's reaction to the crash and the cockpit shakes (Spliced here) with R2-D2 in an external shot making the sound he makes and says this only once then cutting back to Luke who looks over his shoulder. Then the matte painting.

But it is something that I observed. So it might be a scene re-arrangement at this point directly after the crash. But something feels a little odd about it and I don't think it has anything to do with the replacement Matte painting at all.

Unfortunately, as it might prove too tricky to *also* add a matching hint of it to the slightly closer, but very 'shaky' Artoo shots that come soon afterwards as the X-Wing enters the clouds/mist...then I'll happily accept it as being just 'offscreen'.

I have thought about this aspect... And although it would be easy on the static views it means animation on the descent through fog and It's also not something that destroys the film or the character narrative in any way not having the engine there, so it's not a big deal.

The main characters are the most important consideration really.

And as long as this translates well what I am saying then you will know what I mean

This was where the gimbal was attached to the side of the ship to give the rocking sideways motion it is not the complete x-wing

^ That Mac is possibly an alternative as it let's this new alien world come fully into to view. It obscures the world more outside the focus point and then let's our eyes wander beyond that outward and perhaps makes for a more cinematic experience than sticking with a still 2D painting old school thinking of the original late 70's film making. But I do believe the shot is a massive improvement on the original old 2D pretty lifeless painting without any shadow of doubt in my mind.

When zoom in was mentioned I remembered from the 2004 DVD Menu set on Dagobah the tracking zoom on the crashed x-wing in the swamp. I then realized that could be used as a potential enhancement to luke running around the swamp looking for R2-D2 who is currently underwater at this point at 02:42 in the clip. as a combination of the two. But I do not think it is needed. But if a zoom out were to be added, then the zoom in here would be an interesting counterpoint to there being quite a bit of danger that is also unseen on the planet.

Anyway Zooming is a great way to achieve a gradual focus on different aspects within the same shot.

If the Revisited team can manage to line up Snowspeeder flaps and Dagobah swamp life perfectly in perspective they will have made up there mind on the x-wing engine probably withing a few short moments...

1. Would we be able to see the upper gun of the x-wing on the side view cockpit as It enters the atmosphere through the blue haze?

2. Would the crashed x-wing miniature have smoke rising from the engines?

Ronster, I thought you might be onto something there, so thought I'd check it out...but on having a quick look at a couple of differing side-on blueprints, it looks from them that the uppermost part of the top closed guns would either be in line with the back corner of Luke's downwards-angled, side cockpit window (which is hidden by his head), or just ever so slightly below it.

So assuming the camera POV is pointed somewhat directly side-on to the window and Luke's head (which is how I see it personally), then no, I reckon it *wouldn't* be visible.

And I guess the smoke seen rising from the new X-Wing miniature is needed no matter what, so that it matches up with the smoke seen in the full-size version shot immediately afterwards.

___________________________

I think you might be right about the upper gun, to be honest I am not sure but I have learned to look out for stuff on all the cockpit views because they have problems of this sort.

Something I can confirm though is that the wing and engine was removed on the side closest to us to film the side shots of R2-D2.

It's around there somewhere in the nearfield of the bottom right of the image if it would not have been removed for filming

The Star Wars Movie Score Unused/Replaced Music Restoration Thread (Released)

Carbon Freeze (Original, Restored)

I was curious about this one where is this music found and what track is it in?

I thought it would not be better than what is in the film version but I think this would actually work better than what is in the film now after hearing it.

It's got a great feel to it.

When Should we see the Falcons Mandibles out the window?
Time

I am talking to you and everyone else here who reads this thread.

The current Special edition is a corpse, it's dead meat.

Although it's a rarity in cinema really now and if a screening pops up in cinema people will go to see it there is absolutely no chance of a re-release on any wide scale of the special editions or even the original films to cinemas.

If any restoration is to be made to the original film negatives it will have to be a new Special Edition version and offer something new i.e. Stereoscopic 3D with some enhancements be it physical of virtual (CGI).

This could also include the original theatrical film with the 3d version and the varying Special edition version as physical media (Blu-Ray) which would be a historical sort of relic by this point.

The Special Edition will not translate to 4K but neither will an unaltered OT translate to cinemas on any wide scale.

It would be like trying to promote seeing Original Sinbad trilogy world wide to millions of people.

;-) = not really

It all depends on...

1. If you would really like to see the OT in a cinema in 3D

2. How does the film translate into 3D as a direct port (pretty well as a whole IMO)

3. What would need to change but not make it a bastardised over the top CGI extravaganza but keep the film pretty much the same.

4. Extra version of the film but for thrills not as a replacement for any other version.

I think 3D is by and large a gimmick and it is something I rarely buy into I have on a few occasions with varying different opinions on the experience... And then I saw "Gravity"

I won't ever forget that experience...

Me too!

So although we have by and large written the low centered POV angle off, upon discovering it has been cropped off. I put together a rough mockup of the difference of what it would look like cropped and un-cropped as a comparison.

And with the Black Bars filled in...

So again let me re-iterate it is only rough but It's an interesting thing to see it differently like this and gives a lot more depth of field and corrects the aspect ratio. So all round I have to say I quite like it... Especially seeing the controls right in front of us also.

I had to make up a bit of detail on the bottom left as it was missing. But anyway it's cool that the angles match up exactly and we can see this in a totally new framing.

I wanted to go to the DJ Yoda gig on Monday but I was feeling a bit tired, and I saw him years go (8 years ago perhaps) getting a bit old for night clubbing these days :)

I am going to sign up to that later today... It says you need to register so I assume the location will be revealed through this once you register and join this group which I have not bothered to do yet.

At heart, hard-core OTers are no different than all the fans who discuss the trivialities of the EU and try to reconcile the various discontinuities, they just talk about different things. ;)

So...they're all annoying?

;-)

Annoying doesn't even begin to cover it. ;)

What I meant though is that they spend to much time worrying about things that are just fiction....

But I was like that once or twice, so I can't complain too much. And I still read all the incredibly trivial problems with the movies that the OTers write about....

It's not so much about being worried about a problem but more about being a creative person and half of it also being just a desire to actually see the ship out the window which is also a fair desire to have.

Again I have revised positioning... It's actually more like what was in the first post I think but on this shot and obviously as a current assessment not seen at all on the other 3 POV cockpit shots.

To make this happen I had to get Lightwave 3D and learn a bit of how to use it and download a model of the falcon so I could assess angles. This is far more accurate now.

I have also emailed Stinson weather or not I get a reply or not, but I hope we do as his model is by far the most accurate by all accounts including the cockpit which certainly was not the case with the model I was using to do this mock up.

No more Star Wars Arcade green Atari wireframe lines :)

And hopefully a conclusive wholly accurate answer coming soon.

There is one last thing I noticed and I think it's another Lowrey Digital Brightness Spike. So it is not a fault so much as it's been way over brightened than the Gout originally was. I darkened up the whole frame here to see what would happen.

Now if you look at the Gout the cockpit is much Darker, and I think that works with the environment. Although it might be a bit too dark?

So It's not really a big deal but I think because the blue has been removed it now looks more super imposed than it did previously with Lowry's new brightness and contrast.

The Gout is Red shifted Heavily but I do feel that the Darker look works better and almost also makes sense flying through a thick fog bank it would gradually get darker.

So It's a very easy thing to change it back to how it felt originally if indeed this is one of those instances where Lowry has Ramped up the Brightness way beyond what it was ever meant to be. Which I believe they have here.

I really like all the colors in your new Clip a lot it all feels very nice and polished.

I actually like everything about the new Dagobah matte (set) and the Spider I think it looks really excellent and far superior to the original matte.

I did notice a bit of mist animation on the right doing something strange, but as always the clip is probably an older version and that has no doubt been sorted by now. (Ignore that comment it's facebook compression)

Vader looks great fixing the no neck issue too. I never noticed that before today.

I am not in any way criticizing but Although I extremely enjoyed the new clip it really looks great. I will give my usual feedback and thoughts you have given me after the experience which was only 1 thing of your new additions and one from the original film.

1. Would we be able to see the upper gun of the x-wing on the side view cockpit as It enters the atmosphere through the blue haze?

2. Would the crashed x-wing miniature have smoke rising from the engines?

And that is it... But I also have to admit I really like the comment on the facebook page about adding a visible splash when R2 falls off the edge of the x-wing.

It was very pleasing to watch and I thoroughly enjoyed it :) Thanks very much

It's around there somewhere Frank....

I think the question this debate and although comedic really poses, is If I am to pay £15.00 and sit in a cinema and watch the OT in glorious 3D with glasses on.. Do things like this need to be adjusted or enhanced in terms of 3D (filling in the missing 3D perspective) to keep us immersed in the 3D experience.

Is it necessary to enhance missing 3D perspective errors to keep it from falling over?

And although I am not really bothered that it is not visible in the film (although yes I would advocate the never before seen camera angle looking out the window seeing Han driving his much beloved Millennium Falcon for Episode 7 TFA) would I be bothered by it if I was watching this film in 3D and I had paid £15.00 for the experience?

I think the Answer to that question for me at least would be "Yes". I would expect an immersive 3D experience if I paid for it and although you could consider something like this a "special change" it would be very applicable if the film was in 3D.

I Love this film and It's a totally forgivable thing for a movie made in 1980 but would I be so forgiving if I paid to see it in 3D in 2020?

2020 vision :) I knew there was a joke in there somewhere :)
