The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

Well the whole briefing scene about attacking Starkiller base became a silly Parody, and then when they got there and relied on Finn just saying yeah I can take out the shield he had no clue how to do it, yet they still managed to do it. This was really lame and stupid and was a bit insulting.

That and the Squid creatures on Han’s Junk were the most painful I think in the film. And not to mention the guys from the Raid / Raid 2 what was the point in having incredibly talented martial artists that do no martial arts and shoot guns?

Anyway offset this I think the first 30 minutes were actually the best part, it started well but I think it lost it’s way by the end.

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

Pretty much in agreement here on a lot of what has been said.

I give it a 6.5

Many things I liked many things I disliked.

Plot was poorly handled, needed about another 30 minutes to allow the time to settle in. Hopefully an extended version will be made. Phasma obviously had a scene cut at the end I reckon there is more.

It felt a bit like a microwave dinner in terms of character development apart from Rey

Gollum should not have been in it.

Carrie fisher face hardly moved… Don’t know if she has a medical condition but either excessive plastic surgery or Botox sprang to mind.

Harrison ford was the pillar of strenth to the film but Daisy Ridley did ok not an outstanding performance.

I did enjoy it but man so gutted the music was not with this film, it hard a big part to play in it not reaching a much better feeling to it. The music was non existant and this is the most major downfall and serious lesson to be learnt.

Thanks

I still have yet to be in possession of the Golden Harvest release because I am waiting for it to be delivered from over seas. This is holding things up a bit as I am not going to bother ripping the sources until I have that and do it all in one hit.

Good news though I should also have a rip of the Laserdisc also soon. So I am excited for this edit and a few major decisions have been made and various planning out the sound mix and taking notes are more or less complete.

As far as the Abbot scene goes which was never in the theatrical release it was always in the Asian release and although part of me wants to cut this scene as the film I remember never had it in there, the decision to currently keep it comes to this.
It’s the Last film Bruce Lee completed and it’s also one of the only films to actually contain his real voice. I think it is very important to put Bruce Lee’s voice back in there as the lines exist for all but one bit of dialogue…

When Bruce mouths “Yes I understand” (dubbed by John Little Documentary film maker) There is no Audio for this line. So I have been looking for sound bites to re-create this line from Bruce Lee’s voice so this has also been a bit time consuming but I think I have found the sound bytes that I need for this.

But this also perhaps gives us a clue as to what was meant to be in the film as the Abbot starts to waffle and his Lines do not match his mouth movements after a certain point where as they do at the begining so I am undecided as what I will do about this as of yet.

Let’s also not forget the obvious change of season between the opening fight and this being clearly set in the winter… So perhaps there are better ways to handle such a scene rather than concentrating on linking it up with the Mr Braithwaite conversation in fact you are witnessing my decision making process by reading this and that has perhaps just tipped to full blown conclusion.

This won’t start proper until next week.

Another quick observation this time from the new Blu-Ray (40th Anniversary edition)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yKf9bhXMbU

The sound of Lao kicks have been modified I’ll be keeping the original sound but they re-syched Bruce Lee’s Voice to match his lips on “Thats it” About time but I will be fixing that anyway. Lao also will get angry before he is told off for it in this version.

A quick comparison of the Abbot scene

The IVL Golden Harvest

The IVL features one long take for the scene and has more image at the top and the sides

Old Uncut Warner Version

The Warner version cut’s to a zoomed in version of the scene rather than one whole take

Warner new version

Restores the shot to one take but the framing is yet again different

Game of death 2

The extension to the scene found in game of death 2 has more information at the sides but is cropped vertically at the top and more information at the bottom, potentially making the footage difficult to use unless the IVL is cropeed vertically also to match as Bruce walks past the camera or the GOD2 footage cropped or try to amalgamate both some how by masking them together. perhaps a pan down might do the trick or a zoom out. Blending the 2 won’t be easy either.

proper 2:35:1 aspect ratio on GOD2

If Luke Force chokes pig man then your not sure if he’s turning evil.

If he snaps the scout troopers neck on the speeder bike it’s yet another seed planted as to weather or not Luke will fall to the dark side.

That Bunker Shootout helps alleviate the stupid Ewok ground battle and balance things out a bit in my opinion. Half eaten Storm troopers or not.

I think this one rings a few bells not just the police siren then that got bodged up when williams escapes the cops.

This edit is going to happen, I have asked around for the laser disc here to no avail I have even offered to buy a copy of it and post it for for someone to rip / capture the audio and video.

I just bought game of death 2 for the deleted scenes just now so that should arrive soon.

This project will be worked on over the holiday period, been a bit busy with other commitments recently

DVD Cover Concept.

I think the back cover needs some work

The Story so far…

Ok I have also just purchased the cantonese version of ETD this has much of the missing audio contained within it’s sound mix. Getting closer but still need that Laserdisc now probably only for video.

Quick Update 6

This shot might have to wait until a 16mm print of the documentary shows up, or all the docs finally get shiny new digital video transfers.

I did some more work on the 2d Death Star Explosion. Now i’m making an alternative version with this explosion:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcX2jHB0sCY

I tryed to add color to one of the black and white clips, and i found out something really interesting, this is really, really, REALLY hard. It seems pretty simple, but to get the color to look natural is the tricky thing to do. I’m still testing, eventually i’ll stumble on a solution.

Liking the explosion you have done.

So far as coloring in the Black and white clips are concerned, personally I think the most important one is Han and Leia’s double smooch is the best of the lot. getting that one in color would actually fix Leia’s Hand jumping position on the back of Han’s head not to mention the line “Ok Hotshot” which is fantastic. You also have a very good reference in the film for the colors of the scene so it should make it marginally easier. What’s not to love about this. It also connects with the deleted scene of the Tie Bombers bombs dropping. So all round would be a great sequence of most of the main cast and some good acting there.

Brutal Luke / Scout trooper neck snap looks good! would be a good addition to ROTJ well done.

I like the Death Star explosion, but when it gets gradually brighter in the beginning, I think it should have a more red/yellow hue to it, to suggest it’s heating up. Looks kinda cheesy as it is. Also once it’s completely white, I would cut straight to the explosion, rather than lingering as its gets the outer glow. Just my personal opinion, but I think it would work a lot better.

RogueLeader said:

The Death Star test is actually a pretty interesting proof of concept. Having two rings instead of just one makes the explosion a lot more grand. I agree with Darth Lucas as well. I think the way the Death Star II explodes is kind of like that; it glows a little bit then blows up completely.

Speaking of your 3D model problems, do you think making an actual model could work too? I have access to a green screen so I could film it possibly. I’d have to learn how to make a decent model though. Not sure which would be more work. You also run into the problem of not only making a Death Star model (whether it be real or CG) but also having to make it break into pieces in a way that is similar to the Death Star II, if you want imply they are the same station.

I understand this may be rather difficult to accomplish so I am behind any other ideas we can invest in that might actually benefit the story more.

Yeah i agree with Darth Lucas too, and since you guys shown some interest, i’ll make a better looking version of the 2d explosion 😃

Regarding the 3d explosion, making a real model wouldn’t be very helpfull, at least in my opinion.
You see, i want to do an epic explosion, something that simply wouldn’t be possible with an actual model!
This scene from the movie Oblivion illustrates the kind of explosion i want to do:
(CONTAIN SPOILERS) The explosion starts at 1:34
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHKtN9jPK1w

I want to do an explosion that looks like that, but that still fits into the Star Wars universe!
If you have a different idea on this, please, let me know 😃

Idea: for a (Musa) The Warrior 2001 - Extended Cut
Time

Ok a small update,

Today I have purchased the Korean 2 disc special edition DVD release of (Musa) the Warrior (Region 3)

The title of the film is “Musa” which translates as “The Warrior”

I have noticed the sound mix was re-done in a few places in the international cut vs the original theatrical Korean release. Have not made up my mind which I prefer but the international release initially seems better choices of music near the end of the film and a music cut smoothed out on one scene.

Apart from that I await the delivery of the DVD. It claims to have English subtitles also so this could only perhaps be for the special edition release which may not have been available initially upon first DVD releases in Korea.

EDIT

The 2 Disc Korean Theatrical version got delivered yesterday. It is a much better quality no smearing and the colors are good. I put it in my old DVD player for which I have unlocked it to be Region free, but the motor is playing up inside of the DVD player so the disc got stuck in there and the buttons are intermittent on the front of it. So after a bit of stress and thinking I would have to open the player up to get the disc back out It some how managed to finally spit the disc out with a bit help from my hand. Thank goodness!

The subtitles are really quite poorly translated on the Korean version so buying the Swedish release was not a waste of money although the picture quality is much worse than the Korean release the subtitles can be used as the main basis for the theatrical cuts subtitles but already I have noticed a few differences in the translation in the Korean version to the Swedish version and the UK version. So 3 separate translations of quite a long film of varying quality.

Idea: for a (Musa) The Warrior 2001 - Extended Cut
Time

Anyone out there like this Korean movie.

Personally I think this film is better than both Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and House of Flying Daggers.

I used to have the 2 disc UK release of the film.

But I got rid of it which I wish I had not, I now have the single disc edition UK release.

I have just purchased the extended cut… a Swedish DVD release which has lots of DVD extras on it (more than the UK release) and the international cut and the theatrical cut which runs about 30 minutes longer but also misses out about a minute or so from the UK Hong kong edit release (without horrible yellow filter mind).

Anyway I am thinking about doing an extended cut of this film that would be a hybrid of the Hong Kong Edit (UK) and the korean cut (Swedish release)

I have heard there is problems with the Swedish release though something about it being 24fps instead of 25fps. and a bit squeezed vertically although it retains aspect ratio of 2:35:1

how would this effect the film. would it be very detrimental to it?

If so I will have to double dip on the korean version but have to use the swedish release for a subtitles guide as the korean version has no english subtitle track. Or again purchase the UK 2 disc edition that apparently contains all the deleted scenes.

You can see how this starts to get a bit complicated.

But I really do believe this film needs a proper ultimate cut made as it was butchered for international release as opposed to it being the film that was originally intended to be. Cut’s were made in a non sensical way.

About the subtitles:
The subtitles were re-done for the UK release the extended cut has a poor translation and timings apparently. I don’t know if this would extend to the deleted scenes though on the UK release.

Anyway anyone interested in this film or Asian cinema in general I would appreciate any thoughts or comments on the film “MUSA -The Warrior” as I have a general idea at the moment of what it needs to bring it up a few notches.

Also has anyone seen the extended cut here.

Thanks

Edit

ok I can confirm that the extended cut is much better what I have seen so far of it but the Swedish release transfer has smearing issues and some subtitle timimng issues the translation is not really bad or anything like that but there are subtle differences in the UK release subtitles.

I think this rules out the swedish release as a video source for the extended cut.

I will have to obtain the korean theatrical version Region 3

I also have a feeling this film was renamed for western audiences as “Musa The Warrior” as the symbol on the title card might resemble the character on the princess hanckerchief which translates as “Save Me”. I need to check this in more detail but It’s an initial observation I have made without knowing Korean language.

The swedish release adds to the title “MUSA The Warrior the princess of the desert”

If I buy an NTSC Laser Disc of Enter the Dragon (THeatrical mono mix)

Is there anyone in the UK that has a player willing to rip it I would post it to you, you just have to give me the file you can keep the Laser disc.

I suppose you will need an NTSC Laser disc player

Any takers?

There is also a few short segments of video I would be interested in if that can be ripped also, the main thinkgis the sound mix.

That’s certainly a video! Which pulled a lot of their mistakes from things discovered in this forum (Luke’s “Ghost”).

ahhh…ok.i don´t know the shoe in the asteroid field…

Forget the shoe… what about that cockpit shot!

It just goes to show you how re-purposing the shots creates the jigsaw puzzle. Nice corkscrew move there of the falcon in action lol… But where does it go? I’m not opening this book someone else can.

Top tips:
is it the same length as any other shots with the start trimmed off.
does the shot minus the cockpit frame follow continuity of any other shot.
Read the shooting script for the scene
Check storyboards
look for music that has been cut (yes there is) 2 shots have become one.
Have fresh bandages after smashing your head against a wall

If this shot is representative of TFA’s overall aesthetic then I’m getting even more hyped than I already am.

Just needs “Ride of the Valkyries” playing over it.

These trailers, I have been trying to pin down the style, and the closest thing I can find to it, what are their inspiration.

And I am feeling that it is inspired by “the thin red line” by terrence mallick. The narrative over images.
That is an acknowledgement by the film makers I think of Mallicks work. About time he did the extended cut. but I am calling Terrence Mallick an inspiration and influence on the TFA perhaps only subtle but it seems it has been used in study in relation to the new Star wars trilogy.

Perhaps Kasdan and JJ both admire it although far from being the same it has that flavour

well the way I look at it is it’s going to be a trilogy of films so whatever you start with you are going to have an arc in their current or previous relationship.

I’d rather see them separated and make it up then be together and drift apart,

I have no idea what is planned for their relationship but I think it will be a very interesting plot point in the film or could be interesting say.

I’m sure the bickering will start minutes after Han and Leia are reunited. 😉

I really hope so!

I have not heard anyone else bring this up, but it may have been said already.

I mean as you said Silverwook I want some proper flaming arguments going down here… But there is a chance that they may not still be together in this movie in fact I am banking on it or almost hoping for it as no longer being a couple… but What if by the end of this new trilogy Han and Leia end up together again.

would’nt that be something?

What I am saying is it would make sense that they are separated… It seems an obvious plot point to me… Yeah Cheesy but bring that on!

Which would be better Han being with another Girl and Leia single or Leia with another Man and Han Being single or both Han and Leia being in other relationships or them both meeting again and both being single having been in other relationships.

So…not to pull a Ronster but I’ve been dying to bring this up for quite some time now.

Just so you know I have finished looking at it. I have most the answers I was looking for.

The last few things just came really quickly together. It’s like when you only have a few pieces left in a jigsaw puzzle and they all go in very quickly. At the start it is slow going.

My personal Journey on studying the film has come to an end.
