Thanks Ronster. I’m not sure why you would think i’d be more interested in redoing soemthing i had already finished once over starting something fresh and exciting though.

I guess but i think there are a few small opportunities to avoid it being a complete carbon copy of your previous effort and as you say I guess re-doing stuff might be a bit of a chore or a bit laborious. Some changes will noticeably perhaps not re-use footage and be re-done. I also doubt you will use 2d images for ships and probably have 3D versions?

I believe it will be much better and refined on the second time around. Atleast that is what i think. It won’t be as exciting for you as that first effort but i think it will be much better this time around but i also think it might be less radical than the first effort.

The versions are different.

They have been tailored to appeal to different markets being western and eastern.

My edit caters to a western market and is basically the theatrical cut with a few differences. It is an attempt to create the most full version content wise.

You can search enter the dragon on movie censorship but it won’t point out missing audio and music. But will tell you about the differences between the versions visually.

I suggest you actually watch it and decide if you like it first before asking me about this any further… Seriously any more of this and i will ignore you.

Back to asking about upscaling and encoding if you don’t have anything to offer on this please do not reply.

Thank you

Yeah that is theatrical cut of the US version.

There is also a hong kong theatrical cut. Both in Cantonese and Mandarin.

Anyway… Please can somone give advice best way to encode if upscaled and best way for upscaling with DVD or alternative please give advice on best authoring software for DVD.

Alternatively happy to let somone else do an upscale if they want to of the edit or author.

Thanks

I don’t know but I would reccomend the special edition probably as a first watch version as the theatrical version on laserdisc has really muddy contrast and overtly red and green shifted… It looks quite bad being honest with you.

Here is a sample from laserdisc.

It’s not something to hate but the special edition looks much better and you will enjoy it better probably given the poor quality of the release.

This is not the theatrical cut or the special edition as the special edition is based on the asian version or hong kong version.

This is sort of a hybrid with a few extra shots and alternate takes not found in any other version but which follows the script for the tournament so there is a part that is rearranged so it gives more clarity to the timeline of the tournament part.

But is more akin to the theatrical version than the asian version or special edition version.

But the audio is very much a new mix created from various sources but restores all the music from all versions + the whole of “gentle softness” and missing sound effects from the asian version and also i added a few strokes of audio and sound effects myself where audio was clearly missing and to accomodate extra footage but it is not particularly revisionist and sorts out audio synch issues also as it goes out of synch in some parts in the special edition version.

The theatrical cut is only on laserdisc but i hope this version will be like a sort of substitute that goes beyond the theatrical cut and fixes all the jump cuts and it flows much better also being more smooth and refined but also to create a version that is a bit more sensible and padded out slightly.

Did the audio for this yesterday… although i need to check over a few things.

Images out of date slightly for color.

Small amount of Video to do will be out by December.

Please can somone offer advice on either keeping this DVD quality or upsaling best way to encode… Need Advice.

Very close now. It should have been finished ages ago but i got a bit distracted and bored of working on it. Anyway nearly there now.

I have been working on it sporadically but it is as i said nearly done.

Fyi This is a fan edit but with a lot of preservation and restoration at heart.
It is like an extended theatrical cut or a special edition of the theatrical cut but with some scene rearrangd in an effort to restore proper chronological order (tournament section) and music cues noted in the script but also restores a lot of missing audio only heard in the asian versions of the film. The video has been the real tough part of getting it to look right as the transfer was bad…

Although I asked for advice on encoding anyone can offer advice on authoring a DVD also or help with this part.

Thanks

I think what can be inferred is that the Blu ray won’t go poster colors the tape will so i would trust the tape more than the bluray…

It is probably tinted and deliberately so like the tape. But not as drastically blue on blue like the bluray.

The poster is probably closer to real colors the day it was shot. Thus the tape is simply tinted the bluray is irrecoverable as it has tinted a tint.

Check the pic where i said “I had a go” looks like the VHS sort of so that was taking it to neutral.

Thanks for the info on the languages…

Thinking about it the best possible approach would be to use the old 4:3 R1 America - Universal Pictures (1.33:1) DVD and mix it with the VHS and try to make a dvd version… Will blend much better.

another possible color grade here too…

here is the dvd list

Thanks for posting these… Interesting stuff.

I think it is also interesting Jackie and Victor are Dominguez and Serrano too.

Is that line missing subtitles in the BluRay? Or is it just to show colors and fonts? Sorry can not remember…

Cool so i was not far off with my color regrade guess so i pushed it sort of the right way. I wonder if that frame grab of the bridge will go like the poster images with more yellow at the top end…

Sorry to harp on about the spanish language track but i can’t even remember if the helicopter ride was in english or not originally? And if this is dubbed into English / German?

And the looted shack also…

the truck scene will go into the poster colors although there is a lot of noise in the VHS it would seem… Blue and magenta both needed to shift to yellow and a lot of red added but still could not get the right amount of red in yet but with a better quality source such as the German TV version I think I could pull it out…

Thanks for the update… How do the extended scenes feel with the original sound mix for them?

That is not with the german audio dub…

I think any effectivess the extra scenes might have is more often than not spoiled by the extra dubbing. The scene where Nilo has to cross over the big puddle to assess its depth, in particular, has a bunch of unconvincingly looped taunts from Jackie that stand out like a sore thumb from the other dialogue in the scene.

So in terms of the German dub and the Finnish VHS with somewhat original sound mix sans poor audio edits… Is the original Spanish Language intact on extra scenes and so on… or has this been dubbed also?

Does the German Dub Feature the original Language i.e. Spanish or French or is this dubbed in to German also?

Sounds like it will be a very interesting edit…

Sorry just to elaborate the scenes in the Helicopter and the Hut that has had the nitro glycerine stolen by the terrorists. Is the original language in tact for these?

But really good news glad you got this atleast…

Sorcerer for dummies 😃

I guess it is a bit of a silly edit I assumed as much but really for the scene extensions with english / original sound mix rather than flashbacks inserted haphazzardly also…

Well please share your findings.

Would appreciate a cap of the bridge scene also but with original colors please…

Ah interesting about fonts for english version! Is it possible to restore them?

Perhaps it is somone elses then?

Sorry I think the one i had was public link had about 40 - 50 images in it.

Lol it’s unique fun this sort of stuff anyway.

I think the best thing to do is just share it and people will comment on stuff naturally. But better to make it neutral for all people to see. Good ideas are good ideas no matter who has them or atleast that is how I always felt about this place or forum. I don’t think there is much secrecy about fan edit ideas anyway.

i send him the folder with all the pics a long time ago…
and thanks for making this.

I downloaded that and still have it funnily enough. In case you deleted it… found it a few weeks ago hanging around on my PC 😃

Or atleast i think i have a stack of images that point stuff out from somone?!?

Some were quite interesting I thought too… Some good ideas.

You should repost if you have it or put in the ANH:SE thread by Bingowings because i liked quite a few ideas you had about stuff, if i am talking about same stack of images that is.

Flipping those shots doesn’t work because the skiff ends up on the opposite side of the barge at the end, which is why they ended up flipping them in the first place

Not being bad at all, but I did notice that and I felt that the Barge had circled around while we cut away to the interior of the barge and it was not a problem at all because enough time passes from the exterior to interior and back to the exterior again allowing for the change of / new position. you can hear the engines also within the interior shots slowing too…

But I did not feel it was an issue. But if you think it’s an issue no worries don’t mind it either way…

Well a good friend of mine has a Finnish girlfriend… And she is going out to Finland next week So if you need help with translation
I could potentially ask for you.

It is fine by me whatever you want to do… The shovel attack is an editing goof the hitman and the last terrorist are already dead. When Schneider swings the shovel the last time gun shots can still be heard but they are all already shot and dead. The end of the sequence should have the last shots of hitman in truck and dead terrorist who shoot one another the last shovel attack by scneider preceeding this.

Do you think the optical effect for the gun sight dropped because Friedkin cut the footage that is in the TV / German cut? Also budget might have been running out and he might have been told to shorten the films length? Basically the TV cut features the shot but without the optical effect super-imposed and they never understood what the shot was actually meant to be?

Censored swearing? please tell…

Thanks for thd heads up on the UK release! 😃

Made Prologue title cards… This was to cement the names and chapter the prologue. Very Simple change that I think would achieve a lot. Should it be Jesse and Victor? (leaning towards Victor rather than Manzon and Jesse rather than Scanlon)

Anyway I thought I would display how simple an idea it is… Not saying you should do it but just to show you how small the change was and that it would not interfere with the actual film at all.

The other thought the comes to mind is the “Sorcerer” title card should come after the prologues and begin the Vera Cruz segment with the stone carving of PAZU. So I would do away with the “Flashbacks” from TV version and Extend the theatrical cut using this structure which you can see how simple it is in execution now at least and at last.

The only answer I can give is Pazu is carved into a cliff face so perhaps that was meant to represent sone sort of curse or even divine intervention of an unwanted kind.

Also the front grille of the red truck resembles the stone carving of Pazu perhaps a Possessed truck or also of kin and cursed…

Not sure sbout acceleration over stuff or roads… I think that is what it is… Mumbo Jumbo about the sticks of hydro glycerin or nitro

May aseell call it wages of fear remake by william friedkin
