Dune - radical fan edit <strong>ideas</strong>
Time

Ok I think I may have figured out a way the start can work better.

Opening Starfield “A David Lynch” film A Guild Heighliner is shown and vanishes (from Planet IX?)

Opening Credits with music score

cut to “Planet Caladan” Super, waves crashing no Irulian Narration Paul film Book sequence with no english text and Gurney Huey and Thuffer enter earlier to allow moved shot of Bene Tlielax shot of THuffer over “know an Mentat by his red stained lips” and then fight training… Paul Meets Duncan then Meets his father “The Sleeper must awaken”

Wormhole visual or rolling waves into Princess Irulian eyes and Narration “Otherwise known as Dune”.

?Missing Scene? (Speculation) Baron Harkonnen with the Arrakis Globe speaking of the trap that house Atreides are walking in to. Quite an Inconic scene and it’s a strange omission? “Geidi Prime” Super or was it “Arrakis source of the Spice” Super and the Baron is in the Palace on Arrakis about to leave. He must also send a message because Leto later replies?..

Heighliner appears above Kaitain

Dropship and 3rd stage guild navigator sequence as in extended edition… “We need to look at Paul Atreides on Caladan”

Space shots Reverend Mother Leaves Kaitain (Princess Irulian Narration about Benegesserit Sisterhood and the Super Being) Jessica goes to Door…Pauls Dream then Jessica and Reverand Mother talk Upon awaiting Paul to be tested Jessica narration about “she may lose her son…” over shot of reverand mother in chair from TV cut. Witch in the flames just before “The Pain!!!”

I think this solves the problems of the clunky opening but let me know what you think? I have a Hunch the Baron with the Globe was shot even though it is not in any script as it’s a really important intoduction to the main villain it’s such a weird scene to leave out the Villains iconic introduction that it just can not have been left out even if it was very short we need to see what the Baron gave up before we see him on Geidi prime and getting the message from Piter.

Having thought on this some more just keep the opening credits after Irulian narration straight to Kaitain with the Super for “Kaitain home of the empetor of known universe” and then the scene order I have stated.

I have realised that while the Duke prepares his message for the Baron, surely we were meant to hear the Barons message in voiceover? This would seem to be what is missing here. As it makes no sense without the Baron giving a message whilst Leto replies.

Universal should just prepare a proper extended cut that Lynch would be willing to put his name to other than theatrical version… Because Lynch won’t go back on it and the ball is in their court to sort it out. It’s not rocket science and the TV cut although interesting should be relegated to “mistake”.

Obviously the secret report within the Guild was originally meant to tie in with the Beast Rabaan in the Bath tub while Spice production was halted but the message was diffetent.

“I’ll miss caladan so much” is swapped for the shot of the soldier crying. And that scene is put back into the conception of Alia. There is mention of a shot of geese flying also over the water before Atreides take off. Background missing on Landing field of Caladan glass gouse and castle on the cliff.

Pauls Eye within the wormhole is the place the reverend mothet dare not look at the end.

There must of been a filmbook entry at some point regarding the prision planet and banning of atomics as is referenced also as Paul will send the empetor there at the end of the film.

When Paul in his Room on Arrakis film book is meant to be about Spice worms and acid they produce in their stomach before his father enters.

Every filmbook sequence is screwed up in the film with bad editing actually.

Max von Sydow is also known as “Liet” whom is Chani’s father. In the Ornithopter a spuceminer calls him by his name and paul takes note. He is the secret leader of the fremen. His death scene and chani referring to him as Liet then would make sense but this was left out the TV cut.

Voice over of “We are the secret of the Universe” or “we are the secret” said by fremen reverend mother and then the fremen chant should also find a place at some point in the first act… Perhaps these words were muttered alone at the start of the film as we look into space But the whole prophecy sequence should remain omitted and stay as in theatrical version. It would tie in nicely just this and only this.

Some extra David Lynch’s Version of Dune Information…

The film Book Sequence as shown in the film Is I think an amalgamation of the “Secret Report Within the Guild” Animation or alternatively the planets were to be displayed on the Map shots rather than Text and Planets animation It may have been an alternate animation as the filmbook sequence feels like a bad edit overall. Should be Guild Navigator voice or not “Paul Atreides” basically. Need to remove the Text also no need for spelling out the planets with text but the Supers upon reaching a planet are Fine although we do not have one for Arrakis and the Atreides ships in the Sky… I think The secret Report in the film is the “Dumb version” Probably and they decided to double up the secret report original shots in a Film Book bad edit.

Anyway the Film Book sequence at the start with Paul on Caladan is meant to feature this Dialogue.

Book Voice

“19 Light Years Beyond Epislon Alangue is Arrakis”

“Each Day the Palms Along the outer walls of the palace at Arakeen consume enough water to sustain the lives of 100 men. The palms were placed by the Harkonnens to flaunt their water wealth in front of the city fremen”

Pauls Voice “Baron Harkonennen The enemy whose family held Arrakis as a qausi-fiefdom for eighty years under the Mercantile Choam company contract to mine the spice Melange”

The Part about the Palms is interesting as their were meant to be seen Palm trees burning once the the Arakeen Palace is invaded later in the film and is symbolic to the cut teraforming plot.

Book Voice “Know a Mentat by his red stained lips” We would cut to the shot of Thuffer Huwat intro from TV cut they are already in the room or should be…

The next thing I think I have figured out is the Shot of Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam in the TV version sitting in the chair, I think might be meant to be accompanied by the Narration on which Jessica (Paul’s Mother) Talks about she may lose her son tonight in the rain. It makes no sense hearing this narration at this point until Paul is summoned for the test. There is also the Shot from the Trailer of the Empty Chair a rip optical and the Witch in the flames before “The Pain!!!”

Leto Preparing the Message for the Baron and, Jessica and Leto Making Love should be put together chronologically.

When Yueh find the message inside a Harkonnen Corpse the Shot of him Making an surgical incision to remove the Message has been cut due to graphic imagery from TV cut.

The Bulls Head seen when meeting Duncun Idaho Was to feature a brief inner voice from Paul “The Bull that killed my Grandfather…”

When Paul was to Enter the Palace at the end of the film a short shot of the desecrated Bulls Head with an atreides flag stuffed in it’s mouth was to be shown.

When the Atreides Leave Caladan a soldier Crying and the Flag flying are missing shots. as is the Glass house behind the Landing field.

The Poster for the Film with the 2 moons may have been the very first Image after “A David Lynch Film” There is a change of starfield it looks awkward… and disolve into the shot of Pricess Irulians Eyes before The Opening Narration. Although the moons should not be so Cyan. But going off the Comic it is or was the First image at one time. Actually the Comic has the Sand Dunes Flipped Horizontally but the Moons are correct… Could be that Shot of the Moons from the Trailer? It is also Possible that The Areides Land on Arrakis at Night only in the Morning do the Duke Paul and Jessica finally Arrive with the Super “Arrakis - Source of the Spice” on the Ships Fying on this Shot.

This seems to suggest it was eakmarked for an Arrival shot…

I think what seems to be going on is that Princess Irulian Intro needs to come Later after something… Are we missing a Shot Of the Highliner Disapearing from around Planet IX? Then Irulian Intro eyes dissolve in through shot of water Ripples or Wormhole Tunnel (as we go from Sound of Spaceship to Intro Back to Sound of Spaceship and then The secret Report) “The Secret Report” with the map shots from the filmbook. Remove “Send a 3rd stage guild Navigator to Kaitain blah blah blah” On “The Spice must Flow” >>> Highliner Appears above Kaitain? Water Droplets… Ripples. This would be far more magical to see a Space trip right at the start book ending the Narration.

Brad Dourif stated “I know David would have Liked to have done Some of the folding Space shots” I think he may be referring to the unfinished opening scenes as the trip to Arrakis looks pretty complete minus Gas being pumped in through the hole to the chamber but Caladan looks like IX strangely when the Navigator Spits it into the Universe so perhaps it was half complete.

Yeah sorry was looking on my phone… So seems like you might replace the falcon on the Hangar Matte?

I looked a 1 /72 Bangai ANH perfect grade model and so concluded or guessed on the Hangar Matte the Special Edition Falcon’s cockpit is too small and the Mandibles are stretched? But I am on the move and only looking at it on my phone I just know that these 2 shots don’t match up or feel disimilar… I am curious which way you going to handle it?

Anyway that crane thing with red lights is Good scale factor to match both up scale wise that was really the point or perhaps trick.

Falcon Stretched Horizontally and shrunk a bit. Hanger Entrance widened and Made Bigger. It seems that this shot is the big offender and not the Hangar Matte really. Anyway it’s a rough guess at what it could look like fixed?!? and these are the sorts of things I love about your edits… It’s not the Prequel Battle droids.

You know that whole sequence from your original ANH Revisited was really great but it’s really just the Hangar interior and this Entrance / exit shot that needs a fix 😃 What you did already on the approach was great but it sort of tailed off on this one and the Hangar matte. Good Luck!

Why stretch the falcon? There was nothing wrong with the falcon. It’s completely out of proportion now

I honestly thought it looked a bit squashed… I have overdone it but I do feel that it looks too chunky or fat on that shot… It would be worth checking against a model shot?

http://zeamon.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/CompleteFrontViewFill.png

Something don’t feel right about falcon but I will admit I just assumed it looked squashed and stretched it. It only has one gun on the top instead of 4 and a dent in the radar also…

Finally the Tantive is in the clamp… Well done!!!

Yeah all good looking. So far as the actual footage of R2D2 in the canyon is concerned… It is definitely on the pink side. Red is shifted out towards magenta for this whole part. Please pull it back over away from pink it looks much better being sunset color rather than pink. This and Obiwan in the canyon are affected badly with red shifting towards pink.

Can you either pull out the blue electric or insert new blue electric effect on the Jawa facing camera when he shoots R2-D2?

There is a rotoscoped in effect but it is lost in amongst the smoke which turned a blanket blue… It should be normal sort of smoke with the Blue bolt.

Great work as usual.

How about IG88’s twin head? Actually is it needed at all?

Have you seen the binary sunset shot in Krull near the end?

Just remembered on the transition from star destroyer above tattooune to long shot of escape pod… There is a small snippet of audio from the radio drama that has a harp gliss music and some wind sound effects to help pad the change of environment.

Couple of things for you…

Good color reference I think…

Idea for replacement “you came in that thing?.. You’re braver than I thought”

Good color reference also.

resize and remove weird double window frame?

Fixed color of Yavin IV (for some reason it is a sort of Jade green in the special edition instead of blue)

My final take on this one… Honestly I think the sky is just too weird.

Purple atmospehre Haze around tattooine and not blue? This is the original Matte.

Rough Example… Not saying you should change it but just wondered what it would look like.

Here is a quick look at the opening shot of ANH:RHD. The one good thing about having to start everything from scratch is that i am able to utilise sources that were not available at the time, like HD scans of many of the original Matte Paintings. Plus i have learned a great deal since i completed ANH:R, so i am able to fix a few things that i wasn’t able to fix first time around. It would have been impossible to accurately recreate the original version anyway.

Fixed the misaligned flash effect on the Stardestroyer…

And fixed the background issue with the trooper…

I like the way the opening shot looks a lot, and the Trooper shot obviously, nice touch on the mis-aligned flash element also.

I looked at this part for quite a time and I will try to pass on some notable things I discovered or found interesting about it.

As the opening shot goes on and the star destroyer shrinks in to the distance we hear quite a lot of Laser fire but see no Lasers… I thought about this a bit and I found a small CGI clip by Lucusfilm for some IMAX presentation. It was a recreation of the opening in CGI… Although it does not look all that good the thing I thought that was good was seeing Red Lasers coming towards Camera around the Star Destroyer as the shot is finishing. It “Could Be” that it is actually missing lasers towards the end of the shot. This IMAX CGI clip might be a restoration of sorts of what was actually left out the shot?

https://youtu.be/qQjY7ZDWFNo?t=59

Upon the next Shot of the Tantive approaching camera there are to and fro splices missing. The sound mix does not match the action unless you splice the footage up. On the Tantive explosion shot the first part of the shot should have the Tantive Firing a Red Laser we then cut back to the Red Lasers Appearing off screen on the 2nd shot. Star Destroyer Shoots again cut back to remainder of Tantive being blown up.

Now in your previous version of the Battle with the Storm troopers in the corridor you did a good job of improving things here… But it is not entirely correct how you re-arranged it. I will give you now a bit of info about note worthy shot continuity order that I found.

When we have the Scene of 3p0 and R2-D2 in the corridor… The splice to the soldiers shooting should be removed from this part…This needs to move to the opening section of corridor Battle.

The shot of the Storm troopers Shooting and traversing the Corner replaces the Dissolve as the Storm Troopers reach the end of the first Corridor.

R2-D2 and C3-P0 traverse the Corridor in one shot without interuption (The explosion is in synch with theatrical mix). cutting between the shots of the soldiers running and the Storm Troopers in this corridor firing is correct. Darth Vaders Entrance comes a bit earlier matching (Synch) theatrical sound mix listen to Vaders footsteps carefully.

R2-D2 in the next shot is also missing a Splice… R2-D2 in corridor (without card insertion) Cut to C3P0 entrance. Now the Long shot of Leia putting in the card splice to Remainder of the opening shot card insertion section. Doing this also synchs R2-D2’s wheels (Theatrical mix) hitting the ground as he comes towards C3-P0.

I understand you have your own ideas and how you may want to do your edit… But many issues can be resolved by simple editing (Splices) Use the Theatrical mix to spot discrepancies between the action and the sound mix. Lot’s of missing Splices in this part of the film… I hope you take a simple approach to some of these issues and give some of these a try at least, I think you might be pleased with some of these results and they are very simple.

Good Luck and keep up the Good work!

EDIT:

The Best way to explain this kind of stuff is to supply a demo of what I am actually trying to say… Too Complex to read. So I will Show instead in this Demo below.

https://vimeo.com/353224943

Now looking at how you did the continuity for the first corridor battle part I agree with it but it’s all about that shot from the C3-PO Corridor part that is Missing. I always planned to copy your scene arrangement for the first corridor Battle and then expand on it with that shot but never got around to doing it basically. So Ignore the scene order here only the placement of that shot of soldiers from the R2-D2 and C3P0 dash that should move to the first corridor battle. The rest is just a different interpretation but this was just me fiddling about to be honest and trying to get it running a bit more smoothly or better and trying to find a way of making it make a bit more sense. Ultimately I never finished this sequence entirely but it is a rough framework.

EDIT2: Further Thoughts

  1. Should the point the Tanitive get’s hit coincide with C3-P0’s comment about the main reactor being hit rather than a while after the fact?

  2. On the second corridor fight should we see the rebel troops running to the end of the corridor before R2 and C3P0 make a dash across and the sequence ends on the expolosion? I have a feeling that on the shot of the Rebels running one guard turns and fires this might lead into the stormtrooper being hit? It’s all there but it’s totally out of sequence…

  3. There are definitely more splices to be found.

70mm print of the pre-SE Star Wars film on Saturday in Academy Theater in CA!

I know I read that, but it does not really confirm anything but…

“Dykstra made it sound like the Academy projectionist is the one that actually repaired the damage which allowed it to be shown again (which might also explain why it was a last minute announce/addition to the programming).”

If this was the case then it should be scanned and archived immediately.

As for the print itself… Holy Jeebus! I can’t imagine it looked any better opening day of any of the 70mm re-releases. It was gorgeous and other than that 2 seconds of damage (which, BTW, didn’t require any frames to be lost to repair and didn’t affect the sound), the print was pretty immaculate. Dykstra did say there was considerable effort of the part of many to get Lucas’s approval, so I sadly wouldn’t hold out much hope that this print suddenly finds its way into more and more screenings. I think it could be seen again, but my gut tells me (to quote Indy) only on special occasions. The bigger news to me though is just the knowledge that this exists in the first place and therefore it IS possible should that occasion ever happen.

It is not all that surprising that this 70mm version exists more so what is weirder is that it could have been used and scanned ages ago and released Instead of the GOUT or alongside the SE.

Simply Scanning this would have probably yielded better results than the Digital Restoration work for 2004 and onwards?

I think it’s strange that this could not have been used as a source for a Restoration. Ok it’s a Blowup but it’s still good.

Is this something that could have been found recently or forgotten about?

You’re joking, right?

It’s a shame they never got to finish that part off for the special effects, instead they filled it with people looking around.

Wow, seriously? Okay, tell me. What was supposed to go there?

Something like this…

It’s part of the film now… But it would be nice to see what they had for that part. Actually the Shot of the escape pod flying towards camera in the film is from this part that is missing but they moved it to when 3p0 and R2-D2 are in the Pod. I imagine they never had it all sorted like other effects shots missing stuff it was very difficult what they were doing.

Either way what I think the 93 laserdisc has on Extended Soldier footage is that it is more de-saturated and that is what works in it’s favor. In the rest of the footage not so much perhaps.

Ronster, dude, you used to be on to something but you’re reaching so much lately. Those shots are part of the edit, they were chosen deliberately to illustrate the apprehension of the soldiers as the Empire boards their ship, which in turn makes US more anxious to see what these invaders look like.

If you want to suggest fanedit ideas, that’s fine, but these wild presumptions and assertions don’t help anyone.

Honestly my presumption is that the Soldier shot that is well over saturated and looks so different is because it was re-cut late in production. That is all really…

And the shot where the Escape Pod Leaves (exterior space) was taken from this part and used for 3p0 and R2-D2 escape.

It’s not that difficult to understand or a huge outlandish statement.

When the Jawa shoots R2-D2 in the Canyon the effects for the Bolt that come out the gun are there but the Blue is Missing in amongst the smoke… Just FYI it’s a small thing but the Blue in the Highlights are totally gone on this shot of the Jawa shooting towards camera.

Hope all is going well with the project anyway

This is a Comparison of a bunch of CC’s I have seen lately. They were made by taking images from of all the sources as well as a No DNR version of 4K77 and running them through Dr Dre’s Wonderful Colour Matching Algorithm. I personally prefer NevearGreats and Dr Dre’s but please give me your opinions.

Edit: The link is now fully operational!

The 93 Laserdisc is the best for that particular shot in my opinion, but that shot is plain weird anyway not only just color but the shot starts before he even starts acting! That was because they were covering up other shots that were missing. It was probably added late in production, well the shot is longer than it was meant to be.

The R2-D2 and 3P0 in the alone in the corridor has no place in the film at all it’s a promo shot they also used that to cover the Missing scene gap.

I just want to list some of the other missing material that I found in the script.

When Duke Lito Dies A meteorite was meant to crash into the sea on Caladan. This could be recreated and might be good.

After Paul Bumps into Gurney in the Desert there is a scene which covers that Gurney thinks Lady Jessica is a traitor against Atreides Paul stops Gurney from Attacking Jessica and explains Yueh was the traitor in House Atreides whom betrayed them. There is nothing we can do about this unless the footage were released but it is an important scene and it is perhaps the last Important scene left out. There is no good reason for this being left out the TV version at all. Or is it Brutality to women angle even though nothing was done to Jessica…

There was to be a montage of scenes between seeing water droplets between each scene. This was to show time passing but also Jessica giving birth to Alia, The Fremen training with weirding modules against robots. Paul is taken to an area where plants can grow due to condensation forming on rocks - Life was finding a way to seed Stilgar said they had seed for the plants and this expands upon the rain on Arrakis ending. AGain no Good reason for this to be cut from TV version except perhaps Alia as soon as she is born says “Mother” which might have been considered disturbing.

When The Battle at the end is over the Palace was surrounded by Fremen Warriors Princess Irulian says “Father? What will you do?”

On the end sequence…

How dare you speak to me…
GUILDSMAN #2
(speaking into electric
microphone)
Stop your speaking!!
PAUL
(to the Guildsmen)
Good. You have some idea of what I would do
but I will tell it to one who has never been
seen… one who hides deep in the Heighliner
control rooms. He will hear it first.
GUILDSMEN #3
(fear)
No!
Paul smiles as we move closer and closer to him.
282. INT. CONTROL ROOM - HEIGHLINER - SPACE
Suddenly we are in the Heighliner control room, near the floor in the
chemical spills. We move up into the orange gas. THUNDERING begins
to shake the Heighliner.
PAUL (V.O.)
Where are you… Let me see you or there
will be no spice.

We move into very thick gas and there is a ROARING. Suddenly Paul
sees the Third Stage Navigator.
PAUL (V.O.)(CONT’D)
You know what I’m about to say is true… I
have the power to destroy the spice forever.
The Guild Navigator’s mouth stretches back in a horrible MOAN. The
moan becomes more pained and grows louder and louder.
283. INT. GREAT HALL - ARRAKEEN PALACE - DAY
The Guildsmen in the room are MOANING and SCREAMING and swarming out
towards the doorway – the Fremen stop them. The Emperor and all are
amazed and frightened. There is a long hush. The old Reverend Mother
then turns and glares at Paul.

Now this mentions the third stage navigator but in the 5th draft it was to be a 4th stage navigator basically a sandworm but with a mutated human head similar to a 3rd stage navigator. The scene where the guildsmen are uneasy is in the costume documentary on the dvd. This would have been a cool monster moment at the end a human who now looks more like a sandworm than human because he has been alive for ages and stuffed himself full of spice 😃

There was also the plot point that in the place that the Bene Gesserit could not look… In the Black hole this 4th Stage Navigator would be the one that would kill the men who drank the water of life not allowing them to transcend but he could not stop Paul Atreides, but Because they never made the 4th Stage Navigator he sadly was never revealed as the top Secret Navigator of all Navigators the Ultimate Spice mutation.

The Navigator Being disintegrated is there correctly I think when Paul Drinks the Water of Life but the 4th Stage Navigator was to be the Boss if you like who basically knew Paul had the upper hand and the threat of making it rain he showed them he could destroy the spice but he did not.

Also when Paul Successful takes the Water of Life the last image of the sequence was to be a flower opening. Without the seeds of the scarce plants and the Vision of the Flower opening these things would have added to the Rain at the end but it’s missing all the shots that lead up to the rain plot point.

Interesting finds! The new Palace also matches the Emperor’s landing craft better.
But who’s landing on Geidi Prime then? The Mentat bringing Leto’s message?

The Fremen Sietch model will work, I like that weird design from Krull.

I’d like to see your results, please share them someday 😉

Yeah i would say the Mentat bringing Leto’s message is the only possible answer.

If it were recreated then perhaps showing a Landed ship would suffice with the concept art enhanced i some way. Perhaps some animated smoke would do. that fighter which looks distictly Harkonan would suffice.

It would be better to use the big battlecruiser at the end of the film from Battle beyond the stars for the emerors arrival.

I got that scene wrong from trailer this is during hunter seeker flashback but I think this shot is meant to be the place mohiam dare not look. Witch and the Fire. Swap though for Paul Atreides and fire. “you will see me there looking back at you”

when they wash the Blood and flesh off the floor on Geidi prime this is the aftermath of the sting knife fight where he kills sandakar captain so yes it was filmed.

The more and more I read the only 2 main plot points missing are.

  1. Teraforming - This was adapted into the rain on Arrakis ending. No it is not raining all over the planet. So covered although altered entirely.

  2. Paul loses his son in Harkonnen raid which would be the reason for the Speech and Long live the fighters.

Rabaan in the desert is filmed though so you could show the Sietch and some fighters blasting it followed by Rabaan in desert perhaps after water of Life sequence. This would make the Revenge Speech much better it would fill in that blank and give much more meaning to the revenge after an attack on their home. Pauls Speech occurs on his return then but motivated by both knowledge and revenge.

Lynch really did have it covered in 3 hours as an adaptation that covered the main plot.

Mock up of what it could look like…

I think this really does match the architecture in the movie. This means that Other Landing Shot is actually Geidi Prime indeed and we have a missing sequence. This may also explain why Paul Destroys a Stone pyramid with the Weiding module when demonstrating to the Fremen and the Emperors Golden Tent.

A nice update for Kaitain

As Far as the Guild Report Goes I would cut the Audio “A Secret Report within the Guild” and also “Send a third Stage Navigator to Kaitain to demand details from the Emperor…”.

So what does the Fremen Citadel Look like?

I think the Model Shot From Krull could be a Good candidate to Capture a sense of Something within the Rocky Outcrops… Although it is not something that needs to be shown It would be an excuse for an establishing shot. Alternatively it could be a secret Harkonan Suicide Squad Base.

I have read that the Model Production Facility Burnt down during production so this explains probably why some things are not present perhaps, or things were modified, I have no idea how much that impacted production but I can imagine it was a big setback.

Anyway been working a bit on the Folding Space sequence and some good ideas are at work!

You should see the mini series. Very low budget, odd accents, but very faithful to the book. The only real letdown is the bad CGI… 1984 models do look better.

Here’s the intro with added images as she speaks. For the sake of discussion give it a look 😃
The navigator’s “seeing eye” part does work, the rest adds little.
Still, it gives good information without being a awkward narration.

I’ll move on to the “guild report” and see what comes out of it.

It’s not working…although the shots are not bad choices to try and explain what is being said I don’t think trying to explain what is being said works. The only way I am going to be able to explain how I think about this, is by trying it myself.

It’s not an easy thing at all this intro and I don’t know what to make of this part except it has to make you feel something, it has to be very visually engaging, and it also has to carry some meaning. But don’t take that as a bad thing it’s very hard to work with something that is incomplete. You must Look Beyond the footage.

Think about Elements

Atreides = Water
Harkonan = Wind
Fremen = Earth
Bene Gesserit = Fire
Guild = Space
Emperor = ?

6 Dimensions

never seen the mini series… But I like the painting if it is from that.

Anyway try it with just water droplets then perhaps and transition to her cupped hands. Perhaps it is being over thought.

there is another clip in the trailer for the box sequence. The blurred chair the witch is no longer there then the optical effect rip or tear to the fire and the witch. this probably comes before “The pain!”

Ideed the kyle Mcglaughlan voiceover may mean it was part of the film book originally… It is a decent explaination that it is intelligence report.

This is a bit off topic in a way by this shocked me to lavish amazing looking set’s that were not in the film.

http://www.miljenkrekakljakovic.com/dune.php

The mind boggles on how good these look and not to commit it to film is insane, I can’t get me head around this but obviously there are scenes set in these areas.

It could be interesting to Replace the emperors palace with the matte painting?

http://www.duneinfo.com/Content/images/arrakis/ron-miller/dune27.jpg

But I am not sure that really looks like reflects the interior and the lavishness of the emperors palace and it would seem ideas moved on quite a bit from the concept art. But like I said note the different design for the Landing Ship also. I would say it is Geidei Prime if you put the Matte Painting in the Background replacing the emperors model palace. I have a feeling this would have been the Sandaukar troops Landing on Geidi Prime.

This does look like perhaps what the Palace was meant to look like though.

Tried to improve make it less CG looking.

I think Caladan looks Good and Arakkis and Geidei Prime but the Emperor’s Palace looks poor.

One More Correction Change Caladan to Blue like it should be

This is the Foreword from the Storybook.

THE GREAT GALACTIC EMPIRE had lasted for thousands of years, its Emperor Shaddam IV, believed it would last forever. He was Wrong. In a far corner of the Empire was a desert planet called Dune. It was the most important planet in the Empire, because it was the only planet on which the spice melange could be found. Melange could give people strange mental powers. The Fremen people who lived on Dune hated the Empire because it ruled their world harshly. Their legends said that some day a great leader would come to their world. He would set them free, and change the galaxy forever. They were right. This is the story of how it happened.

Edited Version

Prophecy Intro - (Water Droplets)

This is not a bad guess at how it was set up originally before the Virginia Madsen intro was filmed. I like the Virginia Madsen Intro a lot the music and everything but it does feel off in places. Anyway it’s some more food for thought.

I think it is Good, I think the Caladan Part flows much better than the Introduction. Pauls Dream is well done here also.

I think I can kind of see what you have in mind and building things slowly. And it is refreshing and introduces things more slowly.

To focus on the Intro here are my thoughts on this part.

I like the shot of the Fremen Standing listening and the 2 moons that we’re added.

To break this down to how it would of went I noticed something Key to how the Visuals would be represented.

Forget the Sand of the Desert throw the desert away visually get rid of it.

Have her Voice simply over Drops of Water inter-dispersed with some brief Images (Moons shot and Rings and Stars smoke an eye) that have meaning but Abstract then fade in to her Hands Being Cupped Keep it very Minimal. After this it was originally Meant to show a water Drop similar to what is in the Bladerunner DVD unused credits over the Guild ship Landing so Perhaps use the Deleted Bladerunner Credits scene for inspiration. Inter-disperse the shot of the Fremen warriors between the Shots at the end leaving a pause between her lines feel like Jump Cut.

If you do something like this I think it would be Perfect. But I don’t think it is Bad I just think we need to get to what the Visuals are and she is not meant to be seen until her Hands Dissolve through the Water. Use Dissolve Transitions Frequently like I said Transparency.

https://youtu.be/kQGTVdLibuo?t=26

Time an Opaque Water Drop When she Lifts Her Hand up like Pauls Hand surrounded
by the Water and the Rings see how that works.

You could Build this from a black screen all the way up to a dissolve into her Hands being Cupped.

THe Caladan Part is Good I have no Critique on it. You will Obviously get rid of TV edit Voiceover I assume.

Thinking of the only Report that we get in the film that survived I noticed that it is spoken by Kyle Mcglaughan, (SEcret Report within the Guild) but something tells me it should not be… Were these Reports to be given by the Thinking Machines? Perhaps a more Robotic Synthesised voice would be more fitting. It feels off and I think they were thinking Paul would have this as part of the Film Book sequence which is Dumb because it is for the Voyeur of the film and not any character that would feature in the film.

Perhaps…

Here is the pretty Big Section that has been excised it Has 2 scenes that could be recreated - Emperors Report and Guild Report.

219K. EMPEROR’S WORLD REPORT
VOICE
Seventeen Great Houses of the Landsraad have
reported a significant delay in delivery of
spice per CHOAM agreement. This constitutes
a serious violation of CHOAM codes. Contact
Baron Vladimir Harkonnen immediately.
219H. INT. GREAT HALL - ARRAKEEN PALACE - DAY
A furious Rabban sirs in a black steel tub in the Great Hall. A squad
of TROOPS stands at attention in front of him, listening to his
screaming fit.
RABBAN
Falsify the reports. We can’t hide it all,
tell them we’ve lost only two hundred
harvesters… and forty carryalls… and
don’t let my uncle know about the destruction
of the spice silos… I will catch this
Muad’Dib and suck the blood from him!! SUCK
THE BLOOD FROM HIM!!!

Rabaan Punches the Light above him and the Black Liquid drips over him.

  1. Int Ornithopter Day -

A Furious Rabaan looks Down from an Ornithopter. Below Several Harvesters Burn and a Huge Carryall lies Smouldering in Ruin.

  1. through to 227

Basically Calling on The Sandakar Captain and this is the knife fight I was telling you with Fayed. Thulfer is doing his very best to Make the Baron Worry about the Situation that is growing on Arakkis. Fayed beheads the Snadakar Captain that is more in allegance with the Emperor than Harkonan. We then have a scene where Alia is using the Voice to somone who does not like her for what she is This part tells us that she was born with all the knowledge of a Bene Geseritt Reverand mother.

Then this.

  1. NEW SCENE - WORLD REPORT
    VOICE
    Stand-by … warning … we have just
received a coded threat from the Guild.
Spice production is in serious jeopardy…
Giedi Prime supplying false reports… Guild
to visit Emperor in one standard day.

This then goes on to the scene which was meant to feature the 2nd stage guild navigator! Which sadly does not but the scene is there not the 2nd Stage Navigator. This is strange because if the mask was done all that was required was the Glass Tank to go over the Head perhaps the mouth needed animatronics but… It does not add up why it is not there… Too Disturbing because he is half humanoid?

So there is part of the Big Chunk that was chopped out we have not seen and the 2 reports which were also excised.

There is also Max Von Sydow death scene by a Egg Cluster of Baby Sandworms burst near or around him when he is left in the desert. This is the origin of “The worm is the spice, the spice is the worm”

The Baron Lobotomises Nefud

Also Mentioned is a scene where Sandakar Troops Stab Atreides through the back of their heads and come out there nose or front of there face with a Knife weapon.

If you discount re-shoots this is practically the main chunk of excised material Bar Missing Special effects shots opticals.

You also have the deleted scene with Alia saying “Paul has taken the water of life” but her voice was to be over dubbed with kyle McGlauchlans voice for some of her other lines as Paul was talking through Alia and this was to be quite trippy Tunnel sequence showing you the Place where a Bene Geseritt dare not look into a black hole prior to all bloodline knowledge if you like.

Seeing a theme of Censorship here though and toning down removal of disturbing images and Gore… So yeah it’s not on the DVD because it starts to get really Brutal + weird towards the end.

Hope this is useful 😃
