The Mandalorian - a general discussion thread - * SPOILERS *
Time

Yeah, I know fans of the EU mandos didn’t like the interpretation they were given in the Clone Wars, but illustrating the culture that isn’t static, but evolves with the times, makes them feel more like a real, organic society.

Chronologically, the last thing we saw was in Rebels when some Mandalorians banded together to rebel against the Empire. I’m wondering if that rebellion didn’t turn out well and the Empire stomped them before they fell, leading them to have convents spread across the galaxy living in the shadows. Because why would they be living that way if Mandalore was liberated by the Empire?

Speaking of which, I wonder why they continue to live that way if the Empire is “gone”? Does an opposing Mandalorian faction control their homeworld? Apparently the heavy Mandalorian that confronted him was a Viszla.

The whole thing with never taking off his helmet makes me wonder if that custom has been readopted in the desperate times to preserve their culture, or if someone that isn’t born into the Mandalorian culture has to not remove their helmet around others as a right of passage. You are not a true Mandalorian until the only face you recognize is your beskar.

Idea: OT Edits to Fit the PT and/or the Larger Saga (A Resource Thread, Hopefully)
Time

Even though Darth Vader was meant to be his first and last name when George wrote it, the phrase, “You can’t win, Darth” still makes sense if Darth is a title instead of a first name. Can people not be referred to by just their title alone?

“I’m not feeling well, Doctor.”

“You have failed me for the last time, Admiral.”

“You can’t win, Darth.”

And like you said, Obi-Wan could be mocking Vader by reminding him of what he has become. In my opinion, instead of fixing this line, characters in future stories should just sometimes refer to other Sith Lords as ‘Darth’ to establish that it is a valid way to address a Sith.

But I know this is a thread meant to discuss changes that could be made for the OT, and I think this could be addressed just for the fact it is a common critique. It is more of a retcon than a continuity error, because I think that phrase is grammatically correct either way.

The Mandalorian : a Radical Redux Fan Edit Ideas thread
Time

I agree with you Hal, I don’t think many fan-edits will be majorly concerned with “fixing” things, but putting a twist on the experience.

If each episode is about 30 minutes, I’m guessing could you could turn the first 8-episode season into a 4-5 hr movie, but split into two parts, like the Lord of the Rings Extended Editions. Having multiple films would add to the parallels between it and Lone Wolf and Cub, which had six films of its own.

EddieDean, I appreciate your comments so much.

For the sake of future readers I’m gonna link Darth Muffy’s Noir-Style grade idea. Like he mentioned, it could be an interesting regrade could be a fun way to rewatch the series. I feel like a noir look in this universe could fit well with a synth rescore as well, like something from Bladerunner maybe.

How should we handle situations where people bet the same numbers? Say if I do three prizes for opening, domestic, and worldwide, but two people got the right numbers for the opening (ie, $240M)? If it is a tie like that, maybe the tiebreaker can be whoever got the closer domestic/worldwide numbers.

You are far too kind and generous, RL. If in the unlikely event I did win any of the categories, please send any prize to your local hospital or favored charity of choice.

That is very thoughtful of you! I’ll be more than happy to do that.

If you want more and new Star Wars you’re going to have to make your peace with new characters, new story lines, new actors, new stories.

No “if” about it; I don’t. In fact, I wish it were possible to retroactively make less Star Wars crap.

Not really related to the thread, but as much as like all the movies, I think it would be cool to do a “Revenge of the Jedi” edit that acts as the final Star Wars movie ever, in some alternate universe. Han dies, Leia isn’t Luke’s sister, etc.

It could also explain why the prequel Jedi only used blue and green, because those are the only colors found on Ilum. Maybe the prequel Jedi only used Ilum out of tradition, which would tie into their very dogmatic ways and would allow for Old Republic Jedi have more lightsaber color variety.

And like I said, maybe the crystals on Korriban are mostly, if not all red. You could still have the canon “bleeding” method, but it just isn’t the only way to acquire one.

And another reason it makes a lot of sense is because of Mace Windu. Are you telling me Mace was the only Jedi with a personality or faith unique enough to be the only Jedi with a purple lightsaber? But, if purple crystals are very rare and can only be found on a certain planet, it makes more sense as to why he is the only Jedi with a purple crystal (and I think the legends backstory is similar to this idea).

Best Viewing Order for Fans and First Timers: "THE FLASHBACK" Order
Time

Well you come back to the important point about these viewing orders is that it really depends on who is watching them.

Really the universal choice is Release Order. That is how everyone saw them and you can’t go wrong with that. Chronological is good for rewatches, to go back and see the whole picture.

But, if your person knows Darth Vader is Luke’s Father, but don’t know Anakin Skywalker is Darth Vader, then there may be some merit in watching it chronological. I’ve seen some pretty intense reactions from kids who watched Episode III and were shocked by Anakin’s turn.

I do remember reading someone who showed their kids the Clone Wars show before the OT (or maybe it just happened that way because it was on TV all the time, and they weren’t old enough to watch the movies yet). But seeing them fall in love with Anakin and Obi-Wan, seeing them as these heroes, made the twist in Empire that much harder for them.

If you’re wanting to get you’re kids into Star Wars at a young age, I can see the merit in introducing them with Clone Wars, then jumping to Episode IV, V, then back to III to see how Anakin fell, then coming back to VI.

So yeah, it depends on who you’re showing it to and how into Star Wars you think they might be.

I can understand that. Why not make the colors the Jedi and Sith use just be based on tradition? Maybe Jedi don’t use red because all Sith started using red to differentiate themselves, and so the Jedi do no want to associate themselves with the Sith. But maybe it wasn’t always that way, and in the past Jedi also used red and Sith uses blue, purple, etc. But still, I prefer the corrupting idea for synthetic kyber crystals like in legends.

But they could easily change this by having there being different types of “kyber” crystals, where some already have certain colors and don’t have to “bond” with a Force-user.

Maybe different color crystals could come from different places. On Ilum they could be colorless, but maybe the crystals on Korriban could’ve mostly been red (which led to the red=Sith tradition). We know that places can be attuned with the Force in different ways, like the dark side cave on Dagobah, so places that could be described as Force-nexuses could have different crystal colors and it wouldn’t contradict canon at all.

From how I understand it, turning a crystal red doesn’t just happen like a mood ring, Sith have to turn crystals red in a ritualistic process.

And because a Sith uses a non-corrupted crystal doesn’t mean it turns off or stops working. From what I gather, when a crystal is aligned with you and how you use the Force, then a Jedi and their lightsaber act more as one. If a Sith uses a Jedi lightsaber or vice versa, it doesn’t mean it stops working. But when a Sith’s kyber crystal is attuned with the dark side, then their lightsaber is more responsive to the wielder.

The way I think of it, it is like a duelist using a sword they’re familiar and comfortable with. You adapt to the sword’s weight and feel until handling it becomes natural. Kyber crystals work in a similar way, but on a spiritual or mystical level instead of a physical one.

Best Viewing Order for Fans and First Timers: "THE FLASHBACK" Order
Time

Yeah, I see your motivations behind all of these choices. I have also said in the past that if you’re gonna do the Machete Order, you might as well do ROTS as the only prequel flashback rather than 2 and 3. I do agree that maybe there are a little too many “flashbacks” that could make the watch through feel a little disorienting, but maybe you could show someone this order and report back to us. If you’re worried about overwhelming someone with too many movies and flashbacks, at the very least I think you could do IV-V-III-VI-VII-VIII-IX.

Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

You were pretty spot on!

With the prequels, it seems people have gone from a black and white perspective to a more grey perspective as the years have gone by.

I feel a lot people will get to that point with the sequels as well, but they haven’t got there yet and they don’t think they ever will, even though they probably thought the same thing in regards to the prequels just a few years ago. I’m not saying people will see it as the best thing on God’s green earth, but they will see the good with the bad, just like the prequels.

I’m sure I’ll have people tell me, “That’ll never happen with me!” Maybe it won’t, but I just get the strong feeling of history repeating itself. I think it will take time for people to see the grey in situations, but for now people would sing along with “Bob Iger Raped my Childhood” and fail to see the irony.

Again, I’m not trying to downplay people’s criticisms (a lot of the prequel criticisms were fair too), if I didn’t think the sequels had flaws I wouldn’t be as interested in fan-editing. But I think there is some good in them too, just like the prequels, but maybe their sequel-hurt is too fresh in people’s minds to see any of that, or they’ve yet to hear a compelling alternative perspective.

It’s pretty impressive work regardless of the software, though. So good job!

After Effects recently added this new tool called Content Aware-Fill that I think could potentially be of some use for a Jar Jar removal project. It is rather new, so still not perfect, but for the right kinds of shots the final product can be pretty great and could save you a lot of time.
