Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

Maybe it was a mistake but I left one or two comments on a reddit thread today about the film, just to share my opinion. I really was not expecting the reaction.

Basically I just said why I didn’t really like Rey Palpatine and wished Ben Solo had lived. One comment was, “Give it a rest feminist. Jesus it is always the same line with you people.”
Another, “It’s okay Rey forgave him but Ben had to die for committing genocide.”

Leia was feminist for her time, but suddenly being the least bit “girl power” is enough reason for someone to insult you.
Am I crazy? Is Star Wars not a fairy tale? Star Wars isn’t real life, and I don’t think death should be the only way bad people can redeem themselves. That the only way you can make up for your mistakes is if you stopped living.

Maybe I have a bad opinion. I feel like I’ve been the minority opinion on so many Star Wars conversations. Either way, trying to engage in any conversation about Star Wars is just so tiring.

An idea for TFA

I think it would be interesting if we actually gave Kylo a vision when he prays to Vader’s mask in TFA. Basically, it should illustrate “The Power of the Darkness” and provide some insight into Kylo Ren’s motivation to join the dark side, whether it be for power, order, or something else.

I don’t necessarily have an idea for specifics, but I do have two ideas in mind. At some point, it would be cool to see a shot of Anakin, exactly like this from the ROTS teaser, except Anakin’s face could transform like this concept art.

This was always an appealing piece of art to me, and this would be a clever way to incorporate it without having the lore issues of having a schizophrenic Anakin/Vader Force spirit. I have been considering incorporating Anakin’s Force ghost into The Rise of Skywalker somehow, and I think it would be nice to somehow establish who Anakin is/what he looks like within this trilogy, because if you’ve never seen the other films you might be like, “Who is this guy?”

Secondly, this would be another opportunity to foreshadow Palpatine’s connection to Ben Solo, Snoke, and the mask of Vader. I imagine you could have Vader dialogue since TROS implies Kylo Ren has heard Vader speak to him (although it was in fact Sidious). You would also get a nice parallel between Rey and Kylo, both receiving visions that push them forward on their journeys, one from the darkness and one from the light.

The Rise Of Skywalker — Official Review and Opinions Thread
Time

The failure of the Alliance was thinking that simply destroying your enemy would bring everlasting peace.

To me, a far more interesting ending would have dealt with reconciliation and reunification. Or, at the very least, acknowledge that there will always be new wars, but there will always be those who will fight tyranny. But I feel like neither of those ideas are really hinted at all. Honestly, I think we still could have gotten the same film generally, but a brief epilogue could have at least implied either of these themes. But unfortunately the film doesn’t come to a different conclusion as ROTJ, which makes this film’s existence less necessary within the context of the saga.

Again, I do think this is a fun film, but I was disappointed what they chose to say (or not say) regarding the big picture.

I agree that “Leia sensed her son would die BUT she also sensed someone else would carry on her mission for her”. Like, what? I dunno man, just feels so convoluted.

If we change Kylo Ren’s dialogue to remove Rey Palpatine (and potentially stuff about her parents dying for her), I’ve been thinking about what kind of dialogue we could add. Obviously, as others have said, Kylo dialogue from games and other sources would help. I also wonder if we could take Adam Driver dialogue from other films and add the mask modulation effect. This might sound weird, but I wonder if we could give Kylo dialogue that sounds a bit more, uh, romantic. It just seem some people were kind of surprised by the kiss, like they weren’t expecting it. But maybe if there was more set up, then the kiss would feel more like a payoff by the end of it.

Both Han and Leia as well as Anakin and Padmé blatantly talk about their feelings for each other, whereas Rey and Ben’s dialogue could be interpreted to be romantic or platonic, it seems. Also, we never get a consistent love theme for them either, like Across the Stars or the Scoundrel and the Princess. When they kiss we only get what I think is a fusion of their themes. But music kind of primes people for the romance in other trilogies, but we don’t get a consistent “love” theme throughout this film.

I’ve heard a few comments similar to those. A part of me wishes that Ben potentially turned earlier in the film. Or began his turn earlier, at least.

I really liked the idea of a First Order coup forcing Kylo Ren to work with our heroes. And face-to-face interaction and conversation where he isn’t just trying to turn her to the dark side might’ve made their kiss in the end more expected. I think partly why some people don’t have an “Aww” reaction is because they never blatantly talk about their feelings for each other beyond “I want you to join me.”

I believe he/she also said the movie opened with the Luke and Leia flashback at some point, which would then transition to Leia watching Rey train.

Ugh, I can’t believe they changed it… But thank the Force that they left in a few mentions of the Force dyad still.

Regarding Palpatine’s survival, this is kind of how I picture his it: The blue energy at the end of ROTJ was Palpy’s spirit, and a fragment of his spirit latched onto Vader’s helmet (I think Charles Soule’s comic was meant to hint at this). At some point Sith cultists collected the helmet and the Emperor’s broken body from the wreckage of the Death Star and his spirit then repossessed his own rotting corpse, like a lich. This is why Palpatine was able to speak to Kylo through the helmet and through his own puppet, Snoke.

I like to think Snoke may have been clone bodies leftover by his master, Plagueis, that Sidious then used for his own purposes. He could’ve just been a homunculus, though. Not even sure how that could be tied in. But it would be a fun way to confirm those theories true, from a certain point of view!

Maybe the Sith Uber-spirit was trying to figure out a way to possess a clone of himself (and cut out the need for an apprentice), but maybe a clone was never enough to maintain the Sith spirit, which is why Palpatine had to repossess his own body, and Plagueis’ leftover experiments were then just reused as a puppet by Sidious.

Wow, I would love to see a scene with Rose and Rey! I really hope we get that!!

Is that a Paxis leak? If so, that basically confirms to me that Rey was not a Palpatine was a change in made in reshoots. It is possible that she was, but don’t you think that is the most logical explanation? Unfortunately I highly doubt we will get an alternate version of any scene. I don’t think we’ve ever gotten a pre-reshoot scene.

I think the homestead ending could have worked better or been more interesting if they had made it clearer that it is a binary sunrise and not a sunset (so it is different in that way at least). I know keep pushing this but if you also made it where she was meeting Ben there it would make more sense too.

Adjusting Leia’s death and disappearance runs into some issues.

So you have:
• Leia sitting down and calling out to Ben.
• Leia’s hand going limp.
• The Resistance surrounding her covered body.
• Poe coming back and speaking to her body.
• Her body disappearing when Ben dies.

I had the idea of placing Leia’s disappearance right after Kylo turns back and throws his saber away, helping to imply that Leia played a part in the vision of Han (though that still could be the case). I wish Leia said more than just “Ben”, as well…

But that runs into issues depending on where Poe’s scene with her is placed, and I can’t recall its placement at the moment.

I also think you have to have Rey stabbing Kylo, because I think that her almost killing Kylo is why she decides to hide out on Ach-To, but maybe her Dark Rey vision or pushing Finn could be implied to be enough.

Regarding the political situation

Now that we know a hidden Imperial Fleet is out in the Unknown Regions, I definitely think it would be better if the First Order was depicted not as mysterious or hidden, but as a unified Imperial Remnant on the fringes of known space.

Maybe the TLJ crawl could start out as: Chaos reigns.

I also think one of Nev’s crawls said something about both factions suffering major setbacks and both are desperate to snuff out the other, which would fit well.

What Rose scene was deleted snooker?

Also, any speculation on what was changed in the reshoots with Luke?

And if you left Ben dead and Rey alive, I do think it would be better to just end it with Rey, Finn and Poe hugging. Just because the reasons for her going to the homestead feel very forced, otherwise. The only reason for her to go, in my opinion, would be for her to meet Ben there if he were still alive. I guess you need the moment where she calls herself Rey Skywalker if you’re gonna stick with canon.

Here’s some initial ideas from me for an edit:

Maybe remove light speed skipping by ending as they jump the first time, removing TIEs jumping. Or let them jump and we just cut to the next scene. If the former, remove reference to light speed skipping later. However, this would cause a problem as Finn only has one other thing he notices Poe do before referencing all the “shady stuff” he does.

One issue is that references to it are pretty ingrained in Rey, Finn and Poe’s first convo. You could cut the sequence, but maybe they could still reference it and we are left to imagine what it means exactly.

I don’t like “whoever this Chewie person is, this is madness.”

You could just cut the shot, but I was thinking thinking it would be funny if 3PO said something like, “Will you need me to help negotiate?” Then it cuts to them just running in guns blazing.

Seems dumb that once he turns to the Light Side, Kylo doesn’t take advantage of his role as supreme leader. Research of mine indicates that the emperor sensed this and put General Pryde in charge at that point. If a deleted scene is presented to this effect it would be welcome.

I think the convo between Palpatine and Pryde implies that Pryde is taking over for the First Order. I think removing references to a “Final Order” would help make things clearer, though. It feels like there are a lot of references and easy-to-miss details in this movie.

It’d be very nice to somehow link the massive fleet arriving to support the Resistance with the legend of Luke Skywalker, but I’m not sure how. Adding it to the crawl wouldn’t compliment the film up until the end seeming like the Resistance was still pretty much alone.

Do you think it would be possible to downplay lines that the Resistance are alone? Line Poe and Zorri’s convo on Kijimi and the Poe’s motivational speech before they go on their mission?

I think one could successfully remove ‘Rey Palpatine,’ but it would be unusual for me to deviate from the lore to that degree. I don’t like it, but I think I’d be better off accepting it and maybe tweaking TFA and TLJ to fit in better.

To be fair, you are probably well known for having Padme survive, but that is less egregious of a change, admittedly. But I do think they’ll be plenty of Rey Nobody fan-edits, so an edit that makes Rey Palpatine feel more natural is also a great idea. I think adding hints of him to Rey’s vision would be a good start. And cutting out Ren’s line about Rey’s parents “selling her for drinking money”.

Overall, great ideas!

I would say it would be to keep “Who talks first? You talk first or I talk first?” I heard a lot of comments about how that line won a lot of people over. To me, I think it would make more sense to cut all his other lines but keep that one (if you had to cut something).

I liked the way Nev at one point made it where Kylo immediately read his mind rather than say, “The old man gave it to you.”
Or, you could add the mind reading sound, then, “Pilot. Resistance. The old man gave it to you. Put him on board.”

But there does seem to be a connection to the death of Luke and Palpatine’s reemergence. I guess after Luke died he felt there was nothing standing in his way.

Maybe a hypothetical crawl could mention how Luke’s sacrifice has ignited a spark of hope throughout the galaxy, but his death has encouraged an old enemy to finally reveal himself. Snoke was obsessed with finding Luke, so maybe Palpatine has really feared Luke finding him, so much so that he had used a puppet to do his bidding rather than himself.

The music that plays after Rey fixes DO’s squeaky wheel is the same ominous cue as after she slices the rock on Ach-To.

I wonder what the connection is. The rock prefigured Luke’s death. Fixing the wheel… I’m not sure. Someone pointed out to me that BB8 charging DO is just like Ben healing Rey.

Honestly the music is probably coincidental.

Yeah, someone noted that Rey told BB-8 how healing works after healing the snake. I think she mentioned something along the lines of BB-8 not being able to do that, but then later he gives D-O some of his own energy, having learned it from Rey.

You’re kind of meaning in general, right? Like we edit the film throughout to help smooth out the tone to be more in line with the OT tone?

Another random thought (I’m having a lot of those), I know the Knights of Ren have been confirmed in canon books to not be Luke’s other students, but you could add dialogue from the Knights to imply them being dark side enthusiasts OR his students. It could help make Ben more sympathetic if there’s the implication that the Knights may have also pressured him to do the things he’s done. Just a thought though.
