The Clone Wars: Refocused [COMPLETE]
Time

I think all of your judgement calls are pretty solid so far.

I actually haven’t seen smudger9’s first TV-to-movie edit of Clone Wars, but the idea of hybridizing bits of different episodes together to manufacture new narrative through-lines is a really interesting idea. Keeping that whole arc similar to how smudger9 does it would be a cool way to pay tribute to him as well, since he’s definitely a pioneer for this whole concept.

Seeing that concept applied throughout the series, where appropriate, would definitely make watching through it a fresh experience, even for people who have watched the series before.

I’m also pretty sure Nev (perhaps someone else, Ridley?) did an edit where the ground didn’t break between Rey and Kylo, and Rey just ran off on her own accord.

Maybe Digmod? I’m not sure who did that effect.

Yeah, I think you’re right, Nev. I’m pretty sure he did make that change for his TFA edit.

EDIT: According to his website…

Removed the ground ripping apart separating Rey and Kylo Ren; superimposed same shot of Rey and Kylo Ren when Rey shuts down her light saber looking across ravine at Kylo Ren. Now the two cropped images meet removing the gaping hole.

Well you can’t really do much with them not having a droid.

I’m also pretty sure Nev (perhaps someone else, Ridley?) did an edit where the ground didn’t break between Rey and Kylo, and Rey just ran off on her own accord.

Beyond that, you would just need to cut the First Order reacting to the planet falling apart, and also replace the shots of the Falcon and Black Squadron escaping the erupting planet (and Starkiller bursting into a star). That would be the biggest thing.

You would have the shots of Rey and Chewie boarding the Falcon, and then inside the ship, then the next usable shot would be when the camera pans to follow the X-Wings, as them and the Falcon jump into hyperspace. So you would have to fill in those gaps somehow.

Awesome! If you could experiment with the dialogue tweaks, that would be the biggest thing. At the minimum, that would be enough to make the change work. With that in mind, here is a few things I think could be altered to hammer this idea across.

  1. Two dialogue tweaks. When Rey says it, and the First Order officer says it (the officer could be redubbed).

  2. Color grade the planet to better match how Jedha looked in Rogue One.

  3. The establishing shot of the planet could be altered to where there is a thin asteroid belt around it (sort of like D’Qar), and add lava inside the large canyon that runs across the planet surface (to imply that’s where the crust was cracked open by the Death Star).

  4. We could take an unused arrival shot of Jedha from one of the Rogue One trailers where the U-Wing flies past a giant fallen statue of a Jedi. All we would need to do would be to cover the U-Wing and its shadow with the Falcon. It is a brief shot, but I believe you can find this trailer in 4K so the quality would be good.

  5. Optional, but we could use Michael Giacchino’s exotic Jedha motif when the gang arrives at the planet.

Also, I’m glad you like the Starkiller base idea! With the search for the map being the main McGuffin in the movie, I felt like they didn’t explain it very well, nor did they follow it through to the final act in the movie (instead having R2 conveniently have it in his databank the whole time!)

Another idea I had was to alter the opening crawl of TFA a little. Instead of vaguely describing Lor San Tekka as an “old ally” of Leia’s, you could have it say:

Leia has sent her most daring pilot on a secret mission to Jakku, where a former Imperial cartographer has discovered the missing piece to Luke’s whereabouts…

The idea I want to imply is that Lor San Tekka originally was looking for the first Jedi temple during the days of the Empire (probably because Palpatine wanted to destroy any trace of the Jedi). At some point during his research, he deserted, maybe because he’s from Alderaan and he felt betrayed by the Empire after it was destroyed (this could be why he says, “To me, she’s royalty” in reference to Leia). He stopped looking for it until Luke vanished, which is when he finally decided to complete his search.

This is why the First Order was able to recover a part of the map from the archives of the Empire. You could then interpret Tekka’s first line, “This will begin to make things right” to also mean that this is a way for him to make up for helping the Empire erase the Jedi from history. He now realizes that “without the Jedi, there can be no balance in the Force”.

Some other dialogue changes could be made throughout the movie. Like when Kylo Ren speaks to Lor San Tekka, he could say something like, “The map, we know you finished it. And now you’re going to give it to the First Order.”

Either way, I think it gives the character that legendary actor Max von Sydow portrays some extra depth, despite his brief appearance. It also gives at least some semblance of an explanation for why this map even exists. So many people after TFA were confused by its purpose, wondering if Luke had left the map so someone could find him. We learn in TLJ that this isn’t the case, so having a clearer explanation that doesn’t contradict TLJ would benefit TFA a lot in my opinion, as well as alleviate some of the weaknesses of JJ Abrams’ mystery box storytelling.

Regarding all the discussion about turning Pasaana into Jedha, I’m totally down to help with that! That’s a change I’ve wanted to make from the beginning, there’s several ways you can implement this change in interesting ways, and there are a lot of good reasons to do so, I think.

I think if one were to try to get rid of the superweapon aspect of Starkiller Base, you could make the mission 1) Get the the other half of the map to Skywalker, and 2) Rescue Rey. It would make a lot of sense to make this change, since most of the film revolves around the search for Skywalker, then it gets sort of forgotten in the final act in favor another “destroy the superweapon” climax.
Instead of Han and Finn capturing Phasma in order for her to lower the shields, you could change the screen graphics to show the larger portion of the map that they need. Basically, Phasma is forced to give them the other half of the map, which Kylo Ren says they have at different points in the film. So no planetary shield, they drop out of hyperspace close to the planet only to not be detected by their sensors.
By implementing new computer screen inserts, as well as First Order officer/X-Wing pilot off-screen dialogue, you could reestablish the Oscillator as a planetary-scale tractor beam. After Rey escapes, the First Order could activate it so she (nor the Falcon) can escape. This is when the Resistance swoops in to try and help destroy it so they can escape with the map. They struggle with destroying it, which is when Han and the gang come in with their explosives. The “tractor beam” explodes, but the end is altered so the planet doesn’t explode.

And you would just cut the Resistance briefing scene because it actually isn’t necessary if you think about it.

Obviously easier said than done, but I think the best reason for even wanting to try this approach is for the fact that it keeps the movie’s focus on finding the map to Skywalker from beginning to end.

It just occurred to me that the Child probably is a strand-cast despite Kuiil’s doubts in Chapter 7. We’ve kind of just taken it for granted that Yoda’s Species has now been established as aging differently from other species and that a 50 year old baby is normal to them, but then I looked up Yaddle (the female Yoda’s Species from TPM) and noticed that not only does she have very youthful features, but she also has brown hair. The Child on the other hand is somewhat wrinkled and has grey hairs just like Yoda. There might actually be something to the theory that Dr. Pershing’s reference to “the original donor” is the not the Child but whoever it was cloned/engineered from.

So you’re saying Baby Yoda could literally be a baby clone of Yoda? I personally don’t think this is the case, but at the same time I would love it just for the fact everyone calls him Baby Yoda already. 😂

The Clone Wars: Refocused [COMPLETE]
Time

I knew where you were going with this not long after I started reading this. It seems obvious that editors shouldn’t be beholden to the typical runtimes of television or movies, beyond convention.

It just seems natural to edit based off what works best for the story, whether it be 30 minutes or 2 hours+.

It should be pretty straightforward for one editor to go through and edit these episodes together based off story-arcs. It would be cool though to see different editors contribute to the project by tackling different arcs of the series. It could be a cool way for a lot of people to work together on something.

I would like to play around with editing Tartakovsky’s Clone Wars to minimize contradictions with the Filoni’s Clone Wars series. I think something liked his may already exist, but I think it would be interesting to break it up into a few separate episodes.
Part One could all fit into one longer episode, then the Battle of Coruscant could be its own shorter episode (like one regular episode of The Clone Wars), and the Nelvaan arc could fit somewhere in between Season 5 and 7 as another standalone episode (you would have to alter the ending to not make it take place right before Anakin and Obi-Wan find out about the Battle of Coruscant). Another shorter episode. So, I think this idea would fit pretty well with this project.

I think it’s significant that Bo-Katan extends Din a helping hand out of the water that closely resembles when he was rescued as child. She could be “rescuing” him again from his current dogma. Who better than Ahsoka to talk with Din about leaving an organization over dogmatic ideals.

Damn, some really good thoughts Rodney.

Lol, oops! I have no idea why I said July… November 27th! God, July 2021 would be an awful wait!

Just saw the newest episode. Wonderful! Best episode of the entire show so far, for me. Bo-Katan looked perfect in live action! My guess is that after Mando finally delivers Baby Yoda to Asohka he will shift his focus on helping Bo Katan take back Mandalore.

I just think there is no way Mando gives Baby Yoda to Ahsoka. The whole premise revolves around Mando and Baby Yoda together, and I think they will be together until practically the end of the series.
I’m guessing Ahsoka will have her own reasons for not taking the Child: She isn’t a Jedi anymore, she has a mission of her own she must go on that won’t be safe for a baby, or some other reason.

Perhaps she tells him she knows where to find the last Jedi, and that leads to further missions for Mando. But, we also know that Baby Yoda probably wouldn’t stay with Luke (since Ben later destroys Luke’s temple and all of his students). This makes me think that Baby Yoda will either be taken back to wherever the other Yoda’s are, or permanently stay with Mando or the Mandalorians.

Or maybe Ahsoka will eventually take in Baby Yoda for good, but it definitely won’t be this season.

I’ve never wanted the next episode of anything more than I do right now.

Just FYI, Filoni is directing episode 5, not episode 4 (which will be next week’s episode). Carl Weathers is directing next week’s episode, and since the only shots in the trailers we haven’t seen yet are from Mando going back to Nevarro and to see Greef and Cara, I’m guessing we won’t see Ahsoka next week, but the week after, on July 27th.

I’m guessing Mando stops by Nevarro to get his ship repaired properly (or they contact him asking for his help), and they have a run-in with some Imps in the meantime. (Possibly to help break a prisoner out?). And by the end of the episode Mando will head to the planet Ahsoka is apparently on.

I think keeping Palpatine killing Rey’s parents gives her a good motivation to go and kill him, which also reduces the scenes you have to cut by a lot. I also think it’s necessary to shorten the parent scenes as much as possible so they don’t look like heroes as much, like DominicCobb did - I like how he handled the opening as well. I think the hardest thing is making the Kylo dialogue sound like he’s talking fluently instead of having his words cut up and edited, but I suck at audio so I don’t know how the best way to do it is.

Anakin Starkiller said:

If Rey knows her parents were drunkards who sold her she should hate and not care that Palpatine killed them. The only way she can want to avenge them is if they died nobly, which is the thing we wanna avoid.

Yes, this is kind of the problem for me. Having Palpatine kill her parents was clearly meant to provide her personal motivation for wanting to kill Palpatine, but they had to make her actually want to avenge them by making her parents sacrifice themselves for her. This is a clear contradiction to how they are presented in TLJ, which, in my opinion, is the more interesting approach. And I just hate how the story goes, “Your parents sold you for drinking money” to “No, your parents actually loved and died for you!”

There are also weird plot questions it brings up, like the fact that saying “She isn’t on Jakku” is such an obvious lie that Ochi never questions. Or the fact Ochi could have tortured them, or had Palpatine use his Force powers to get that information from their minds, rather than just kill them. Perhaps you could have Ochi kidnap and kill her parents so Rey would have a reason to hate and kill Palpatine in the future, because he foresaw what she would become, and wanted her to be a potential new vessel for him.

Of course, there are many different options editors can go with, like krausfadr’s idea to have Rey be the one to kill her parents. Maybe it would be a good idea to list out the different options and their pros and cons. Personally, I am pursuing a version that doesn’t string the audience along with more backstory. Instead, Rey’s visions focus on the potential futures. In her vision, she see the Resistance and her friends be killed by Palpatine, so she still has that personal motivation to kill Palpatine. Editing the Force bond duel to get this idea across is what I’m currently working on. He helps her piece together the fragmented vision she had at the beginning of the movie, and makes it clear to her that she needs more power to keep her friends safe.

Potential Scenes that Must Be Changed for a Rey Nobody Edit

I’m going to point out all scenes that are also related to new info regarding her parents. Some Rey Nobody edits will want to cut as much out about her parents as possible, while others will just reinterpret that information.

Potential cut - Kylo and Palpatine’s first scene. “She is not who you think she is.” (This line could be given a new context though.)

Parent scene - Rey gets a vision where we get a quick glimpse of her parents and Ochi’s ship flying away.

Parent scene - On Pasana, Rey sees Ochi’s ship and says something is familiar about it.

Parent scene - Rey picks up the dagger and senses bad things have happened with that blade. She hears her mother’s screams. (This could be kept as-is without the other references to her parents.)

Special Mention - Although Rey using Force lightning is meant to be an obvious connection to Palpatine, without the other related connections, this can simply be seen as a manifestation of her dark side abilities.

Parent scene - While waiting for 3PO to reboot on Kijimi, Rey tells Finn that she recognized Ochi’s ship.

Parent scene - During Rey and Kylo’s Force bond duel, Kylo tells Rey that Palpatine killed her parents because they were trying to hide Rey from him.

Rey Palpatine Scene - Kylo tells Rey that she is Palpatine’s granddaughter. (NECESSARY CUT)

Parent scene - After they escape, Rey says, “He killed my mother, and my father. I’m going to find Palpatine, and kill him.”

Parent scene - Back at the Resistance base, Finn tells Poe that D-O’s former mission was to bring a little girl on Jakku to the Emperor.

Rey Palpatine Scene - On Ahch-To, Luke says to Rey, “Because you’re a Palpatine.” (NECESSARY CUT)

Rey Palpatine/Parent Scene - When Rey confronts Palpatine, he has multiple lines related to their connection (NECESSARY CUTS)
“Long have I waited… for my grandchild to come home.”
“I never wanted you dead, I wanted you here, Empress Palpatine.”
“It is your birthright to rule. It is in your blood, our blood.”
“Weak. Like your parents.” Rey responds, “No. My parents were strong.” (Would need to be cut if you were to remove her parents being murdered by Ochi)
“Your master, Luke Skywalker, was saved by his father. The only family you have here is me.”
Later, as Rey is about to kill Palpatine, he says, “She will take her revenge”. (This line would need to be cut an editor was going to remove Rey’s parents being murdered by Ochi.)

This is all I can think of without going back and watching the movie.
