RogueLeader's Rogue One Edit (* unfinished project *)
Time

Thanks for your thoughts, Octorox!

Like I’ve said, I’m not really committed to implementing those ideas, just want to hear arguments for and against, and see if it would be worth the trouble.

What do you think of not having Vader even mentioned in the film, and not seeing him until the corridor fight (or I guess I should say slaughter).

This is exactly what happens in the movie already though. The flaw Galen left on the Death Star was a leaking reactor. How to get to the reactor is a whole different matter - Luke’s miracle.

I don’t disagree with that. This was just an idea I had to address this issue, which I have heard brought up from time to time. I’ve argued against it before, but I can see where it is coming from as well. Kind of want to get a sense of people’s feelings about it.

Revising Rogue One’ - by Nando v Movies:-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Syx3CBenkz0

^ an intriguing video with the idea of 3 suggested cuts to the movie to try and increase the early pacing of the film. It’s a shame they are with Bodhi Rook (played by the talented Riz Ahmed) - yet may make for a impacting introduction for the character, and his place in the mission…

(to bring some mystery and tension with the character - all we know that an Imperial Pilot has defected with some information from Jyn’s father about a new Imperial super weapon… becoming a mystery, can he be trusted? a hero or mole? a traitor or someone trying to do the right thing / makes things right…)

Also with the proposal to cut Vader from the film until the end corridor scene - and why.

Lately I have been thinking about revisiting Rogue One and actually completing it, and the timing of this video seems to me like a sign for me to go forward with it. Considering my name on here is RogueLeader, I figure it would be appropriate for my first official fan edit be for Rogue One.

So, I won’t be using all of my ideas when I originally made this thread, but some I will, like trying to make Jyn a more active protagonist as well as save Galen’s involvement as a reveal.

I will be borrowing heavily from TM2YC’s Where Rebels Dare fan edit as well as taking elements from DigitalModification’s Spark of the Rebellion edit, big changes and small
As of now, I will not be implementing an opening crawl or wipes like they do, though.

Some other ideas I will be adding:
Cut all scenes of Bodhi and Saw before Jyn & Cassian meet them (Nando and ChainsawAsh idea)
As a side-effect of that idea, there will be no Bor Gullet.
Cut all scenes of Vader up until the corridor sequence.
Save Galen’s involvement as reveal, so the initial mission is only to get the pilot
Change “We’ll make sure you go free” to “[It’s] a chance for you to make a fresh start.” or “We’ll make you a fresh start.” Basically, they’ll set up Jyn with a brand new identity, not just “setting her free”.
Cut “we’re up against the clock” line, so it feels like Jyn has more of a choice.
Cut the Dr. Evazan and Ponda Baba cameo.
Have Chirrut “sense” Jyn saving the young Jedha girl, which motivates him to rescue Jyn later from the Stormtroopers
Have Jyn be the one to suggest going to Eadu to rescue her father.
Keep Galen’s death the same, but have his last words be “Star… dust"
Cut all shots or mentions of Vader before corridor scene.
Cut shots of Vader looking straight at the Tantive IV.

One bigger idea I’m considering:
Use cuts and VFX to remove the data disc being handed off to the Tantive IV. Mask it out of hand. Maybe replace disc with blaster for the second rebel (since he has a blaster in his right hand when he makes it into the Tantive IV). We can assume both ships received the transmission.
Maybe the insert shot of the Raddus receiving the plans could be moved to inbetween the shot of the Tantive IV flying away, and the shot of the rebels running down the hallway, to show that they had downloaded the plans (maybe replicate the graphics of the rebels downloading it to the card).

Another idea I’m thinking about:
Cut mentions of Galen laying a ‘trap’. You can still interpret it that way, but I want it to also just seem like Galen is wanting to leak a weakness that is inherent to the Death Star’s design, not that he intentionally designed it to have a weakness. He lied all these years so he could know its strengths and weaknesses, and then tell the Rebels how it could be destroyed.
To me, this is the best of both worlds. Galen betrays the Empire, but it also doesn’t arguably take away from Luke’s miracle.

There are still some other ideas I’m floating around with, like the scene where Jyn confronts Cassian about Eadu, Jyn’s speech to the rebels, and how to cut them based off this idea of improving characterization that I have. If any of you have any other ideas you want to suggest, just let me know.

The ‘Custom Special Edition’ That Almost Wasn’t, But Then Was (Released)
Time

That was something Ridley worked on a bit on the Collaborative Saga Edit thread.

I definitely think that change, and the “a Jedi master” change are fairly harmless changes. I can see the arguments against the “I wanted you to have this” argument. I guess for me it just felt more like a blatant, manipulative lie on Obi-Wan’s part. Whereas the Vader lie could arguably be for Luke’s own safety. The other questionable bit would be “He feared you might follow old Obi-Wan on some damn fool idealistic crusade like your father did.”

While not really accurate, Obi-Wan could be repeating something Owen said to him, based off his own perspective. So the quote could be seen as: He feared you might follow old Obi-Wan on some “damn fool idealistic crusade” like your father did.

Anyone else totally disregard Leia being Luke's sister?
Time

True. I think that could be a route one could take for a “Revenge of the Jedi” alternate history-style edit of the film.

Yeah, it was unfulfilled. They never really address this idea directly in the new films, but since Leia never came to terms with Vader being her father like Luke did, I think her son now basically being the new Vader is a continuation of that idea. It seems Leia never really forgave her father for what he did, like Luke did. Now, in a twisted stroke of irony, her own child has become her father, and she has to deal with those feelings of anger and forgiveness.

The Last Jedi: Rekindled (Released)
Time

I think that is a good point poppa. If you think about it, Finn’s change of heart, to fighting for someone to fighting for something, is reiterated quite a few times:

 1. When Finn tells DJ he’s wrong
 2. The “Rebel scum” line
 3. The “where we belong” deleted scene
 4. Finn’s motivational speech to the Resistance on Crait
 5. Finn almost sacrificing himself for the Resistance

Especially with the “Where we belong” scene reinserted, the “rebel scum” moment is a bit redundant.

I’ve had this thought of keeping the fight but removing their final lines about “scum”. Instead, it would be interesting if one were to keep Phasma looking at Finn, but add in the sound of shaky breath from under her helmet, almost implying that she is afraid. Finn looks at her, and then she falls to her death. Something like that might make Phasma a little more sympathetic in her final moments, and remind Finn that the stormtroopers are victims too.

I think Finn has just disassociated himself from his past identity out of guilt and shame, and a reminder could be nice hint at his plot in IX if they go in that direction with him and a stormtrooper rebellion. The alternate Phasma death seemed to hint at that, and while it is not in a condition to be actually used, a change like this could potentially hint at that idea still.

Hit the nail on the head, Dom!

Do you think ROTJ would’ve still worked if the sister subplot was still in the movie, but her identity was just never revealed?

So basically Luke finds out he has a sister, but they don’t reveal to Luke her identity in case Luke fails to defeat Vader and the Emperor. Vader still discovers he has a twin sister, and that triggers Luke, but Luke finding his sister is left open for a potential sequel.

The Force Awakens: Starlight (V1.1 Released!)

What if you took ‘fire’ from Hux saying “Open fire!” at the beginning of TLJ?

Yeah, understandable. It would take a bit of effects work!

I liked the last video you posted as well. While the sliding transition from the Starkiller cannon to the First Order technicians is cool, I’m not sure if it fits with the style with the way the rest of the film is edited.

The way you cut their transport conversation is great! No awkward looks from Anakin!

I don’t know if it is in the theatrical (I think it is a deleted segment), but as Anakin and Padmé are walking along that corridor, Padmé mentions how she hoped she’d have a family of her own by now. I’ve always felt that was a nice little moment that showed Padmé did want love and family, but put those wants aside for what she saw as her civic duty. I think this addition helps Padmé’s own motivations parallel Anakin’s, as they both have these personal desires that their responsibilities get in the way of, and it helps set up that Padmé does desire affection without being too direct.

Unusual Sequel Trilogy Radical Redux Ideas Thread

Depending on if there is a lot that will set the new desert planet, Pasaana, apart from the other desert planets in the Saga, I think an interesting alternative would be to make it Jedha instead. Both planets used Wadi Rum in Jordan as their shooting location, so it already looks similar. Maybe you could add a more gloomy color grade to show how Jedha has become a bit apocalyptic after the Death Star test 30-odd years ago. Maybe huge rocks could be seen floating in orbit, or establishing shots of the planet could be altered to help reflect its damage and help make this desert planet stand apart from Tatooine, Jakku or Geonosis.

Also, making it Jedha would help tie into the ST’s theme of visiting worlds that were once holy sites for the Jedi:
Ach-To
Starkiller Bass (Ilum?)
Takodana (site of Jedi battle)

But like I said, it’s kind of too early to even consider, I had just been speculating that it might be Jedha before they revealed it to be a new world, so it was on my mind.

Off-topic, but I had a very little idea for TFA. Remember the rebel pilot doll Rey has in her AT-AT home? I think it would be interesting to give that doll a little toy lightsaber, like a screw tied to its hand that has been painted blue. Why makes this addition, of all things? I think it would be a nice visual that would help solidify that Rey has heard the stories of Luke Skywalker (in this instance, Rebel pilot Luke, like when he single-handedly brought down an AT-AT like the one Rey lives in), and Rey idolized Luke like a hero, which helps emphasize this idea that the new generation kind of represents the fans. Rey hasn’t just heard the myths of Luke and the Jedi, but she dreamed and fantasized about them.

EDIT: Also, this is a very minor thing, but what I like about Canto Bight is that although it is technically a desert planet, they have created an artificial oasis on the planet. I think it would be interesting if this could be illustrated visually in its brief establishing shot somehow. Maybe there could be little circular, clearly artificial, patches of green across the sandy planet surface. Just a little touch to make it distinct, basically, and to help get that oasis idea across.

I also think it would be interesting to try and add a familiar alien race or two to the casino sequence, whether it be with a physical mask and green screen (Bith, Rodian, Twi’Lek), a CG alien (Kaminoan, Dug, Toydarian), or just augmenting humans to look like one of the near-human aliens (Zabrak, Kiffar like Quinlan Vos, Chiss).

Did they replace Kiera’s voice with Natalie’s? That is a good question. I’ll see if I can find any info on that.

And you’re right, it is even higher-pitched in the trailer. But see, I like that. It definitely makes Anakin and Padmé feel closer in age, and I think it makes her at least somewhat more sympathetic. I definitely would want to reimplement her actual voice pitch for any future fan edit I might do.

Honestly, I feel if you were to improve Padmé’s character arcs in 2 and 3, she would be a clear main character of the films, at least alongside Anakin. Maybe they both would be comparable to how Rey and Kylo Ren are dual main characters of the ST.
