Info & Help: looking for... other ld-rips to dvd movies ex. blade runner int cut, songs of the south, frighteners dir cut - and much much more...
Time
I just got a copy of the Frighteners set that Garrett sent me and I must say that I'm extremely disappointed. Both the movie and the documentary seem to be made in quite a ridiculous way. It seems that whoever made these already had the two items on seperate DVDs, but didn't have a DVD burner. Rather, the person had a DVD burning deck (that acts like a VCR). So what did this person do? Hooked up their DVD player to the recording deck and duped it that way. This is apparent by the simple menus that these decks often empoy and the fact that if you skip to the end of each piece, you'll see the original menu (again, a menu from a deck rather than an actually authored DVD). What's worse, the 4.5hr documentary is on this disc as 5hrs. Know what the last half hour is? The playback DVD player's screensaver. Cyberhome, by the look of it. Of course, after all this, the image quality is nowhere near what it should be. The blacks are darkish grey at best. The fact that this laserdisc set hasn't been preserved in the proper way is a goddamn shame. So this is what I propose:

A few of us pool our money and buy a copy of the laserdisc box set. Recently, a copy has sold on eBay for $165, which is not too bad at all. If perhaps four of us went in and split the cost, then sent the set to someone who could encode it properly (this board is full of 'em), we would have exactly what we're looking for. Reply if you're interested and if there's enough interest, I'll make some sort of a seperate discussion place where the specifics can be figured out. If not... well, then, I suppose I might just have to plop down the $200 and get this set.

No one said it wasn't out on DVD, because it is. But not the special edition that was issued on laserdisc with 12mins of extra footage plus a 4.5hr documentary.

Cool, I shall wait for news of this update. I'm assuming that I have the same set as Garrett's as his doesn't have the commentary either. Do you know where he got his?
Whilst searching for a decent cover for my set (the one I got with mine was shit) I found one for a 3 disc DVD set. Disc 1 was the movie with the commentary track, disc 2 is the 4 hour documentary and the third disc was deleted scenes, bloopers & trailers.

Are you planning to remaster the other extras? And what about the 5.1 audio track?

Cuz I'd kinda like as much of this movie as possible.

The deleted scenes, bloopers and trailers are included in the documentary. So in reality what that cover was for was one disc with the movie and the other two with the doc, which is how it should be split up. Where did you find that cover? Would it be possible to track down who posted it and bug them for a copy?

Also, I wouldn't be able to do the 5.1 sound without the original laserdisc.

Reading back through this thread it's only ReverendBeastly who has the commentary on VHS, could you rip the commentary from your VHS copies? And I'll mail you a copy of the movie, after which you merge the two together. Would this be possible?

Yes, that would be possible, and it's a project I'm already taking on from Garrett's (ocpmovie) DVDs. They're on their way to me and I plan to re-author the movie disc with the commentary as an alternate track.

DVD: Return of the Ewok and Other Little Films (Released)
Time
The CD version has been out of print for a while, and it goes on eBay for way too much money. I bought my copy at the Star Wars exhibit at the Smithsonian in 1997(?). Overall, it's really amusing and I listen to it every holiday season, but some of it is pretty grating. I even saw one CD edition once that had no Star Wars artwork on it, I'm assuming so they didn't have to pay for the image rights to the characters.

I think the review of the album on allmusic.com sums it up best: "What is mostly wrong with this album is that George Lucas does not seem to understand that the Star Wars universe and the birth of Jesus have very little to do with one another."

Most of those are readily available via torrents or other means. Really, I pretty much listed the most common ones. Three of them are on Garrett Gilchrist's 'Special Edition Hype' DVD, which I supplied the tape for, so that's out there. Probably the only things I have that's on that list that not many others do are Episode I Unauthorized and the E! special, but sure, I'd be happy to share.

Info: A new edit (The Lost Cut - it was a prank; but some good info in here)

Once I get my burner running, I could ask him to borrow it and then burn a copy and send it to you to identify it. The only problem being that the disc is probably dual-layer and I only have a single layer burner. Maybe I could put it on two discs in different parts.

If it is dual-layer, please split it up to two discs. If this is indeed the Lost Cut, there shouldn't be ANY quality degration.

Please post here once you know the details. Garrett (ocpmovie) is sending me over his copy of the set. He has one disc that has the director's cut and another that has the documentary. His movie disc has no commentary, but I have the film with commentary on VHS. I was going to rip the audio from my tape and re-author the movie DVD to have a menu and the commentary, but if your set already has this, there may be no need. And even if it doesn't, maybe the transfer is a bit better.

The Liam Neeson Mystery (spoilers within but questions answered)
Time
I looked in the "Making of Revenge of the Sith" book in Barnes & Noble the other day and it looks like both Shaak Ti scenes were shot. The scene where she is killed by Grievous was shot during principal "photography". It looks like they decided to scrap that scene in favor of the version where Anakin kills her, because there's a part about that in the section about post production. There were images from both scenes in the book.

Right Here.

Did you notice that if you click the cover, it does indeed read "The George Lucas Special Edition"? That edition is also readily available in the US. It's simply a movie-only edition of the 2-disc version.
