Thanks much, keyz! This set should be on its way to me right now. Immediately when I get back from my vacation, I will scan the liners and send them to Rik, MeBe, Laserschwert and anyone else who requests them. Email is preferred over PM, my PM space keeps filling up.

Also, for those interested in a set when it's finished, we will perhaps devise a pay-it-forward system, or maybe just a tree. Or are they the same thing? I don't know. Either way, free distribution, no buying and selling of this, though I'm sure it'll wind up on eBay sooner or later.

To those organising this; will the LD packaging be scanned? I'm sure that a nice jewel-case cover could be made from some hi-res scans of the packaging. I can understand if it's unopened that this won't happen, but I think it's a used LD, isn't it?

It is a used set, yes, and I will be scanning all of the covers and liner notes. I will forward these materials to Rik (and to anyone else who wants them) to make covers.

Here's the current string of sending: eBay guy -> me for scanning -> Karyudo (this is only a possibility, but he can do a direct hard rip of the AC3 from the LD, where as MeBe cannot) -> MeBeJedi for transfer -> to whoever buys it when it's put back up for auction.

I've had my experiences with it and am inclined to agree. I forgot where he was located, I was thinking somewhere in Europe, but I knew it was some place kind of inconvenient for the shipping on this thing (no offense, Laser). Pressing on!

Hmm. Well isn't that a strange thing. Personally, I'd still like to see this project through. Not much money is going to be lost on the set itself, if any. And the offer still stands for people who don't want their money to be spent on the shipping and transfer to have it refunded.

To Pemdawg, 88keyz, Mackey256 , James Konrad and anyone else who may want to donate:

In the time between when I set up the PayPal account last night (3:30am) and when I checked the account at 12:15pm today, $190 had already been donated. This covered the auction cost and shipping for the set itself. Now here's where it might get a little tricky.

Brad and James have donated a total of $30 after the money has been spent on the set itself. Now the money to be spent is the cost of shipping to MeBe, the cost of re-listing and shipping the item again, and the cost of MeBe doing the transfer. I don't want to make a big deal that he is taking money for this, because it isn't. It's a job that he's going to have to put a lot of time into, and a compensation of $50 (which I offered over his original figure of $35, due to the volume of material in this set) seems extremely reasonable to me. I was going to pay this $50 out of my own pocket because I was not (and still am not) sure how comfortable people would be spending money that they knew they wouldn't make back.

Now, Mackey256 and James, if you don't want your money being spent on this, please say so and I'll refund your money. Pemdawg and 88keyz, if you don't want your money being spent on this, then I understand, just don't send me any money. I just wanted everyone to be clear on exactly how the money would be spent. If you still want to donate, that's fine with me. I estimate that between all the rest of the costs (transfer, shipping, eBay fees), about another $40-$50 is needed. But, like I said before, I'll pay for this out-of-pocket if anyone doesn't want to spend it, because it's totally understandable.

Pemdawg: If you'd still like to donate, ask Rik where to write the check to, he's taking care of check-to-PayPal thing.

88keys: If you'd still like to donate, the PayPal email to do it to (as is posted in the first post in this thread) is brualhupit at hotmail.com

Thank you to everyone who helped out in any way on this. It seems I've come a long way from buying a copy of the Director's Cut on VHS at a convention for $20.

You'd might as well not bother, it seems that this will be in all of our hands soon enough! Thanks for the offer, though.

And thank you to those who donated after the auction's end. I'll post here as I learn more.

HOLY HELL THAT WAS A FAST NEW DEVELOPMENT

I just caught this and, since there's already almost enough in donations alone, I opted to just get it right now.

The set is bought. Thanks to those who donate and those who may donate soon. Looks like all the rigamarole that would have been entailed with my leaving town has just now been avoided!

I’m moving this out of the big thread about LD transfers into its own, because this is really its own project now. Here’s the skinny:

The Frighteners laserdisc set is up on eBay right now. After looking at and hearing about already available DVD versions of the set, I was disappointed in all of them and knew that if the help of some of the people on this board was brought in, this set could be done justice on DVD.

What is going on right now is the set will (hopefully) be purchased in this auction, by myself and the gracious donations of a few others. So far, those others have been Rik, Alfredsson and Michael Ruff. Once the set is obtained, I will scan the box and liner notes and then send it off to MeBeJedi to do a transfer of the set onto DVD. The first disc will contain the film with commentary, and two more will contain the 4.5hrs of bonus features. When the transfer is done and the DVDs are complete, the set will be re-sold on eBay and, ideally, everyone will make their money back. If it does not sell for the same amount as it was purchased for, the money will be proportionally be divided up. If this does happen, it’s doubtful that much money will be lost. And, don’t forget, there’s the possibility of actually MAKING money off this.

Since I will be out of town when this auction ends, I have set up an account with EZSnipe to grab the auction at the last minute. Right now, the high bid is set around $200, and I don’t think the high bid should exceed that. If enough money gets donated, I’ll ask here what an opinion is and possibly up the bid accordingly. When the auction ends, my girlfriend here at home will take care of the finalities and payment with a PayPal account I have set up for this.

If you would like to donate, the email address to do that to is brualhupit at hotmail.com. Of course, anyone who donates will recieve a complimentary copy of the finished DVD set. Already we have over $150 in donations, which I really didn’t think would happen, but is totally wonderful.

If anyone has any questions, I’d prefer email as to save PM space: reverendbeastly at gmail.com

Further developments will be posted in this thread. Thanks to everyone who kept bringing this set up and spruned me to go charging into the dangerous land of eBay so this laserdisc set can be done justice!

Mod Edit: an official release covering much, if not all, of the proposed project in here saw this project not finalised. Though still an intriguing thread full of information and ideas.

Boomstick: It's cool, no rush. I think we're all going to be very happy with this project in the end.

Alfredsson: Man, that's really generous of you. Hope the transfer doesn't disappoint!

Rik: Thanks, buddy, for your work now and your future work on this project. This is gonna have some fiiiiine casing.

General people: I'm setting up a new thread for this later today. I'm going to put it in this forum because that's where people know to look for it, but if zion deems it necessary, it may move to Off Topic.

Drowningman, that's great to hear.

I've set up a PayPal account, so anyone who wants to donate to this, can. When the entire process is over, the item will be re-sold on eBay and the money made from that will be divided up proportionally. If we get more than we paid, then we all make a little. If we get less, then I doubt we lose much. The email address to make donations to is brualhupit at hotmail.com.

I have opened an EZSniper account and set the high bid at around $200, although I'm hoping that much won't be needed. If anyone has any further questions, email me at reverendbeastly at gmail.com

Mitch, thanks for the offer, and that is pretty tempting, but I think that actually getting a good rip of the LD set itself, created properly, will do us a lot more good than any way it has previously been captured. Plus, with the fact that we're probably not going to lose much, if any, money on this, there's really no reason NOT to do it.

NOW the question is WHO will capture it?

And as I've said before, I've discussed this with MeBeJedi and he's up for the task. Rik, check your email, I'm movin' this outta PMs

Just a thought...

Thanks for the link! I thought of using that service once before but did not once I learned of their charges. Now that the first few auctions are free, I see no reason to not use it.

I was going to appoint my girlfriend, but if someone here wanted to take it up, I wouldn't object. It would probably be less hassle all around. My only concern would be that I was going to pad the PayPal account with a bit of extra money of my own and I'd be a bit hesitant to let someone I don't have direct personal experience with to have access to that.

Rik PM'ed me this idea and I like it a lot. How would the logistics be worked out? Pemdawg, I know you said you're not into PayPal right now, and that's fine, but it seems like it might be the easiest way. I'm sure we could work out a way to still contribute, i.e. sending a check/MO to someone who could deposit it to their bank acct, then transfer to PayPal.

Also, I'd like everyone to bear in mind that the auction ends on the 26th and I leave for a week-long vacation (with no internet access) on the 24th. I'll have someone here monitoring the auction and whatnot, but the point I'm trying to make is that if a PayPal account is going to be set it, that needs to be done in the next 3 days.

To anyone who's interested:

The Frighteners laserdisc set is up on eBay right now. It does have a reserve on it, but the seller says that "it's a low reserve." If anyone wants to contribute anything at all to helping me buy this laserdisc set, so I can have it properly transfered and preserved on DVD by MeBeJedi, PM or email me at reverendbeastly at gmail.com. Anything at all would help and, of course, you'd get complimentary copies of the DVD set afterward.

Pro menus, 2.0 sound, kinda soft black levels, and the documentary is broken up oddly acrossed the 2 discs, but its 100% watchable, and it sustains me while I wait for a newer version with the DD5.1 and the commentary. Doesanyone know how to make screencaps with Apple DVD Player for Mac?

I have no idea how to cap with a Mac, but I would definitely be interested in a copy of your set, should I not be able to obtain a copy of the LD set to have MeBe create DVDs from myself.

This is a pretty ridiculous statement. You don't have to like all of the works in a volume to be a fan. Take, for example, the Beatles. I'm just not that fond of Let It Be. Just doesn't really do anything for me. I love Please Please Me, Meet the Beatles, Rubber Soul, Sgt Pepper and all the rest, but just not really Let It Be. That mean's I'm not a Beatles fan? Hell no it doesn't, it just means that of all of their output, I would prefer to listen to Let It Be the least.

That being said, I would like to point out that I am a fan of the entire Star Wars series, both the old and the new, albeit two of the new ones hold the bottom two spots on my list. I merely had to point out how nonsensical your statement regarding "fandom" is.

I'll check on that skip, I don't recall at the moment. My copy is decently solid, I think it just suffers a lot of static/grain issues.

The score is temped and the effects aren't complete. With the alternate score, the movie is totally different, because mostly, it's just not there. A lot of the narration is different, more somber. Some of this can be heard in the deleted scenes section of the DVD. All of the deleted/alternate scenes on the DVD are integrated and there are ones that weren't on the DVD. For instance, there's a behind-the-scenes segment showing the filming of a scene wherein Jack is told (at the airport) that his luggage has been destroyed, which isn't in the deleted scenes section. That scene (amongst others) are in this cut.

I have a steady job right now that's pulling in some decent extra income, I'm thinking I may make the purchase when the opportunity presents itself. MeBeJedi has agreed to rip the LD for a modest price and make a DVD set, most likely 3 discs. He knows his stuff, so the transfer will be a damn good one.

I'm willing to bet that your discs are the ones these were dubbed from.

Below are the two menus of the discs themselves:
