Movie Making: Tools of the Trade (opinions from Mac Folks welcome)
Time
First off, for cameras, I reccomend the Panasonic GS series. Looks like the 150 is out of production and the 320 is the closest thing now. The reason I liked the higher-up one is that it shoots anamorphic, but if you're just starting out, that probably won't matter. Looks like the GS80 would do you just fine.

I primarily edit on my PC using Premiere, which I enjoy very much. The Mac version of Premiere is a pain and not worth the trouble. I have edited with Final Cut, and I still do when I am mandated to because of a class project. The two programs are pretty easy to pick up. If you can do one, you can do the other. I haven't found either one to have an advantage over the other. FCP allows you nice add-ons like Soundtrack Pro and LiveType, but standalone programs for PCs can do that same kind of thing.

As far as effects go, I really don't know what there is for a Mac. For PC, I know there's Adobe After Effects, which is really powerful if you learn how to use it properly. There might be a Mac version, I'm not sure.

It pretty much boils down to whether you want to work on a PC or a Mac, I would say.

NON-Star Wars Fan Edit and Alternate DVD Covers SHOWCASE

Nice, but you've got the aspect ratios wrong. Dark_Jedi's HD2DVD transfers of 'Monster Squad' and 'Twilight Zone: The Movie' are both 1.85:1, and DD 5.1.

And you've still got the aspect ratios wrong! They're both 1.78:1. On a widescreen TV display, 1.85:1 still has small black bars at the top and bottom of the screen, whereas 1.78:1 fills the whole screen.

I'm a nitpicker for aspect ratios

Is The Directors episode still being included on this set? It's commercially available on the Season of the Witch/There's Always Vanilla DVD and really shouldn't be included here.

It's a fan edit, it's a challenge, it's a poll, it's a cry for help, it's... Star Wars: The Longer Versions!

I think it's also pertinent to point out that ADigitalMan has already created extended editions of the prequels. So if your goal is to learn some software, then by all means, press on, but if you just wanna watch the flicks with all the deleted scenes back in, you might wanna track those down.

//RETURNING TO JEDI\\: NTSC & PAL DVD
Time
So the DVD finished downloading yesterday and I immediately copied the files, threw in the IFO fixes and shrunk it so I could watch it without delay this morning (still haven't bought any blank DL discs).

Before I go into my thoughts, I'll just say that anyone considering only getting the SL version from Jambe needs to seriously reconsider. The SL shrink I did looked really awful in some parts and I'm really, really glad that JD decided to primarily release it DL.

But yeah, my thoughts: F'ing fantastic! Damn, dude, you really raised the bar with this one. The sandstorm recreation was incredible, as was the footage with the prop saber and the newly unearthed footage. The whole thing was so damned tight and professional, I've gotta add my voice to the chorus saying that Lucas should be paying you do to this kind of a service for the fans. This was really the first time I ever got a sense of Marquand as the director, rather than someone Lucas told exactly what to do. I'm excited to dive into the bonus features and easter egg after I'm done with my classes today.

Take a break, sir, it's much deserved, but I eagerly await any future projects you feel like throwing at us.

Idea: a fan edit documentary?
Time
This could be pretty damned cool, I'd be willing to help however I can. As is probably the case with a lot of us here, I'm an aspiring filmmaker, so if there's anything I could lend on that end, I'd be glad to. My participation in the community goes as far as contributing one (simple) edit and watching a bunch of others, so I don't know how good of an interviewee I'd be, but I would still certainly do that too. It would be neat to gather recollections from people who were around and active on this board around the time that non-SW fan edits really started to bloom, I think, too.
