Does anyone have this mammoth release!?
Time
Actually it was limited to 20.000 copies. But that still doesn´t make it any less impressive... ;-)

Anyway, any chance some of you proud owners (Mr Freeman, HotRod or die-jarjar-die) are transferring the documentaries to DVD or have already done it? Would love to see those original "making of" documentaries. Please message me if you have some good news for me. I´m in Iceland btw and I also use the PAL system.

Editing the '2oo4 Editions' - which changes would you revert?
Time
We don´t know where Vader´s shuttle is and neither does he. He landed on Cloud City and then stayed there for several hours I suppose and the shuttle could have flown back to the Star Destroyer for fuel or whatever. It´s not Vader´s job to know where his transport is at all times so he just says pissed off as hell after having failed to convert Luke to the darkside, "Bring my shuttle." You can hear just how angry he is in the scene as apposed to the silly and technical "Alert my Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival" line. There´s just no contest as to which line is better suited to the scene, that is my opinion anyway.

As for other changes the biggest ones I don´t want in there are:

1) That fuckin Greedo scene. It makes a mockery of the original rogue hardball Han Solo character. And it ruins the shock/surprise when he comes back in the Death Star battle and saves Luke from Vader. Plus it looks incredibly silly and unconvincing. GC at it´s worst!

2) The Jabba scene in ANH. I liked more when this Jabba character was a bit of a mystery. Plus this CG thing is absolutely pathetic with the "stepping on the tail" bit especially bad. Lucas should just have left that scene out as it serves absolutey no purpose at all. We know Han owes him money and he´s working on it. It works much better to have the Jabba character as the ominous figure he was in the original versions. What happened to some damn mystique Lucas?

3) Replacing Sebastian Shaw with Hayden is incredibly stupid and goes to show that Lucas has no respect for anything. Why on earth is this necessary? And if we take the silly explanation made by Lucas as to the reason for doing this then that is lame to say the least. If Anakin really did "die" back when he was young then why did Lucas have the old Anakin in Return Of The Jedi?? Anyway everybody knows that Luke brought out the good in Anakin at the very end and why shouldn´t he then appear as the older Anakin, he had turned away from the dark side then!? That´s right, there´s no reasoning behind this other than to try to connect the new movies to the older ones for commercial reasons. And what about the fact that we see Anakin as an old man during the unmasking and then a few minutes later we have the young one, how´s that for continuity?! And last but not least, how on earth could Luke know who that young Anakin is, since he has never seen him before? And I´m sure Lucas thought about it REAL hard to just digitally replace Shaw in the unmasking scene too. I bet he did, but hopefully someone told him not to do that. Lucas is just like a big baby in a candy store and has lost touch with his ones legendary vision. He´s to old for this shit.

4) The new scene with The Emperor and Vader is silly and unnecessary and just about messes up the only real surprise of the trilogy when Vader tells Luke he is his father later on in the film. What´s left when we look at the whole SW saga then, there´s nothing that will come as a shock or a surprise when people watch the six movies in numeral order. That´s a real shame.

5) I would like to see the humorous "You´re lucky you don´t taste very good" line back in. The replacement is just plain boring.

6) I would also like to see a middle ground taken in the windows /open spaces CG on Cloud City. I always kind of liked the claustrophobic feeling there.

7) As I mentioned here above I would ofcourse like to see the "Bring my shuttle" line back in. Much cooler, darker and in keeping with Vader´s character.

That´s about it regarding the changes, everything else is really minescule and unimportant for me anyway. But I guess it will be very hard to edit the movies in a DYS kind of way cause the difference between the picture and sound quality of the official DVD´s and some bootlegs in pretty big. So if one was to splice for example the original "Han shoots first" scene into the new DVD version then that would stick out like a sore thumb to put it mildly.

I´ll continue to watch my old version on my DVD-R´s cause those are the movies I love and grew up watching with all their qualities/faults. Lucas doesn´t seem to care about those old groundbreaking versions (that´s his problem)... but I care and I see a whole community of fans who feel the same way... ;-)

Hey peepz,

Just stumbled across this INCREDIBLE release from back in 1995, called "The Executor Box Set". Is there anybody out there who has this package? This is some amazing stuff with about 5 hours of "making of" material, complete scripts for all three movies, the THX mastered widescreen laserdisc transfers on VHS and all sorts of collectors goodies (and I particulary like the packaging artwork, really minimal and cool). Now I hope someone out there is transferring this stuff to DVD cause this has to be preserved and enjoyed forever. Nothing beats those original "making of" documentaries, there we get the real truth and all that hard award winning work that went into those classic moves before the time of CGI. If you have any more info on this set that is greatly appreciated, cheers!

Btw this monster of a set is going for close to 30 pounds (not much IMO) on ebay at the moment. I wouldn´t mind getting my grubs on one of these at all! ;-)

my thoughts on originals vs SE...
Time
It was clearly a rushjob, cause even back in 1997 this was no "state of the art" GC imagery. This scene should never had gone in the Special Edition in the first place. I liked the mystery surrounding "this Jabba character" originally and he ofcourse had his time in the Return Of The Jedi full and proper IMO. This is one thing Lucas knew back in the late 70´s and early 80´s that it´s often much more effective NOT to show things. Like for example I also liked much better when we didn´t see the Wampa creature in ESB. Was more suspensful and better moviemaking than the "you HAVE to see and know everything right away" method he seems to adopt these days. It´s ofcourse because the geezer is getting old and gives in to his belief that the "kids" have to be able to figure "everything" out. No mystery!

- Pretty similar story for me. I have three different VHS releases of the Star Wars Trilogy. The first being CBS/Fox release from around 1989/90 (with the original movie poster artwork - really cool!), then I bought the 95 Widescreen Limited Edition - the one which stated "The Original Star Wars available for the last time". The final VHS release I bought was the not so special "Special Edition Gold Box", with the rather bogus pan&scan picture (they didn´t have the Silver one over here in Iceland).

I hardly played the 95 tapes at all out of fear of the VRC making a mess of them so I kept them stashed away safely and even more so when the Special Editions came out in 1997 and Lucas muttered those were his definitive vision! Then when the DVD format got going I was positive I could (much later that is) copy them to that medium and I just did that and the results are pretty good, the tapes were in really good condition. But I´m not completely satisfied, really want one of those Laserdisc bootlegs doing the rounds now. I want better picture & sound quality like everybody else I guess. But man, imagine the quality of an official Original Trilogy DVD release that Lucas could provide us with if he weren´t such a "politically correct" children´s clown, caught up in all the silly prequel mumbo jumbo and special effects fiasco (he seems to have forgotten what it´s all about hasn´t he!?). I sure hope one day he´ll come to his senses and give us what we want (or someone will smack it into him!), he can´t just ignore this, cause this ball is rollin‘ and is only gonna get bigger and bigger...

PAL DVD bootleg of Definitive Edition Laserdisc!
Time
Hi peepz,

First post on here, and I thought I´d check the status on a possible PAL transfer of the Definitive Edition Laserdisc. I´ve been browsing and checking out various bootlegs and haven´t seen any PAL version yet. I´m from Iceland btw, and here we use the PAL system. It offers a slightly higher resolution picture, but at the same time has fewer frames per second than the NTSC system. So please peepz, if you know of any PAL transfer of those laserdiscs, then let me know. Cheers! ;-)

Btw, just had my own VHS copies of the 1995 "The original Star Wars available for the last time" widescreen release transferred to DVD. Will get them tomorrow, pretty exited about it. I had hardly played those tapes (out of fear of damaging them!) so they are in pristine condition and should make a good transfer to DVD.

I really can´t stand all those changes made by Mr. Lucas, escpecially the Greedo debacle, Anakin switch and the Jabba scene. He should show some respect to the films that made him a legend in the business, the people who grew up watching them (and put food on his table by buying everything he released!),... and I´m not even gonna go into all the hard (award winning) work by the countless people, whose brilliant work is being erased from history, by some dodgy computer generated imagery which often looks a lot more fake and unconvincing then the original stuff. It´s a real shame. It looks like going for the Laserdisc DVD bootleg is the only way to preserve those classics...
