- That lame change was already in the 97 SE. That´s Lucas letting us know EXACTLY where Vader went and what he was going to do next. It´s just silly! "Bring my shuttle" absolutely finalized that scene with Vader sounding very pissed off and evil. Fitting very nicely with his body language. Just as it should be.

Yeah, that´s AMAZING quality! Can´t wait to pop those suckers in my Pioneer 656 on my 32" Sony monster come september 20th. Expecting some sweet results. I´ll just have to close my eyes and pop in the earplugs occasionally during "special sections" of the films if you know what I mean...

New dialogue found (more may be coming) A&E's Empire of Dreams

This is interesting stuff. And that BANG! shout is hilarious! Great to see moviemaking like this - the good old style where you just had to make good with what you had "physically" and not this over reliance on that neverending computer generated stuff. I can´t wait to see the full 2 1/2 hour doc, hopefully with lots of old footage and interviews to see. September 20th can´t come soon enough!

Editing the '2oo4 Editions' - which changes would you revert?

Yeah sure Harrison Ford may have had a rough time coping with all that "science fiction nonsense" and re-takes and re-shoots or whatever but imagine the boredom Ewan McGregor for example has had to deal with on the prequels? Hours upon hours of blue/green screen shooting and speaking and reacting to nothingness itself (later to be some godawful CG creatures or surroundings!) And dealing with Lucas´s "vision" through it all, oh man! Harrison, Hammil, Fisher and co had it easy I tell you.

Info: OT Bootleg DVDs

I wouldn´t mind a decent PAL transfer of the ‘93 Definitive Edtion laserdiscs if anybody is working on it?

I really don´t want just to settle for an NTSC transfer because there´s quite a bit of difference in screen resolution between the PAL and NTSC systems - especially noticeable on a good large screen TV and computers. Also the NTSC DVD´s I own often suffer from "jagged edges" so for me it´s hands down the PAL system. I´ve already had my ‘95 THX Widescreen VHS tapes transferred to DVD but I´m not completely happy even though they turned out much better than I thought, thanks to some quality work. Although there is some picture and sound trouble there I ofcourse don´t want to see.

There is definitely a PAL Definitive Edition laserdisc available right, they weren´t just released in the NTSC format were they?

Lucas's Explanations
Time
There´s this really good movie that came out in 1997 and is being re-issued this year (appearantly with some "enhancements"), it has George Lucas in the lead role and he gives a very credible performance indeed. There´s a bunch of supporting extras ("yes men") that usually agree with him on all subjects; bad, good or insane - the flick is called "Clueless" if you are interested,... and it has no Alicia Silverstone in it!

Does anyone have this mammoth release!?
Time
Yeah it sure would be great to have those original documentaries on DVD (one for each movie and the collected From Star Wars To Jedi). Maybe Rikter, TR47 or someone else have something planned? This would make a great addition to the already available Definitive Edition DVD Bonus disc. How about it fellas, is this something worth considering?

No the Definitive Edition does not have those original documentaries (at least not completely) but it does have those three interviews featured on each of the tapes in the Executor Set, with Lucas, Burti and Muren. It also has the original and re-release trailers I believe but I don´t know the exact similarities between the bonus materal on those two sets. Maybe someone who knows about this can tell us what extras they share and which are unique?

The dramastructure/storytelling of those movies is made to work at its best if you watch them 4,5,6,1,2,3 (unintentionally I guess, since Lucas really wants us to watch them in numerical order!). But now he´s going around and trying to damage that as well, messing up the important plottwists and turns from the original trilogy so he can make one big, rather boring saga with no surprises and a rather childish structure were everything has to be "knocked into" the audience - a forgone conclusion really! He should really come to his senses and release the original trilogy unaltered on DVD for those of us who consider that to be the real story, he should then just meddle, change and mess up his own "definitive versions" to work best with his prequel trilogy. He should really do that.

Cringe Factor

Hmmm.... It seems one is never to old to begin Jedi training! Obi Wan was as you said still a Padawan at close to 30 and Luke began his training at about 20 years of age. And then the biggest blunder is the Jedi councel´s statement that Anakin was just "too old" to begin training when he was just a small boy, 9 or 10 years old! He could have easily chilled out for a few years before even considering going for it!! How about some consistency here Mr. Lucas!

I´m just amazed that Lucas and his "yes men" actually don´t realise the damage they are doing to the original trilogy and ofcourse the saga as a whole. They HAVE to know that future generations WILL most likely watch the movies in numerical order and what have they got there, a big storytelling mess imho! It works better to watch them by release since that keeps most of the surprises and drama structure. But I seriously doubt many viewers in the future will figure that out.

Seems we could be starting a rebel alliance here folks! Against the evil empire!! he he...

The only things I wish Lucas had settled for change-wise back in 1997 was:

- 1. Fixing matte lines (Hoth battle, Rancor monster etc.) and boxes around ships, that sort of stuff.

- 2. Cleaning up the films, colorbalancing and transferring them to digital so they can be preserved.

- 3. He might just as well have added that Biggs scene on Yavin, it works ok for me.

- 4. Some of the saber effects could use a little touch up escpecially Luke´s on the Falcon and in the Vader/Obi Wan duel.

- 5. And finally some doors opening/closing could also use some smoothing out.

That´s about it. I wouldn´t have added any GC shots (the films look great as they are) and certainly wouldn´t have changed characters and storyline!! Lucas is absolutely clueless!

We´ve known all along that Anakin was ones a good person and that he would revert to the sinister and evil Darth Vader, who´s pretty much the darkest thing in the Star Wars universe. There is nothing in the first two movies that has been shocking or surprising. That´s because everything is known. Lucas is just filming a story that pretty much every Star Wars fan knows about. And in the process he´s ruining his earlier and much better trilogy of movies.

- Tell me Jimbo, what surprises are there for people watching the saga in numerical order? Let´s hear it!

And yes ofcourse Natalie is beautiful but she is a drab character none the less. Compared to Carrie Fisher´s Leia, there´s a HUGE difference in depth of character and likeability. One cannot just focus on how beautiful someone is, they have to bring something to the storyline and the films as a whole.

Oh and there´s one more thing (for now). Since we all know and see what happens to Luke and Leia in Ep.III and who their parents are. Then one important revelation in Return Of The Jedi is destroyed. The scene where Obi Wan reveals to Luke that his twinsister is Leia (and the following scene with Luke and Leia in the forest). How´s that for ruining yet another surprise? And another pivotal scene destroyed is when Yoda says in ESB "No there is another". Well people watching the saga in numerical (idiotproof) order will have absolutely no problem whatsoever figuring out who that other one is. That´s Luke "twinsister" ofcourse, for crying out loud! And one more thing (I promise I´ll stop it after this). The scene with Yoda in ROTJ when he finally confirms that Vader is infact Luke´s father, well everybody knows that already and Yoda´s part in the story there takes a huge knocking because of this. Yep Lucas is a real genius, he´s creating more problems than solutions with those silly prequels!

- And what do we have then? I big, long and silly saga full of nothing but predictable storytelling for kids with the audience told everything at least twice. No surprises, no revelations, nothing! Just a big bore with "state of the art" special effects. Come on peepz, the Vader revelation was one of THE most shocking in cinema history, and now he´s messing that up. Let me tell you something. As a young boy and later a teenager drinking up everything that was Star Wars I always thought the legendary and mysterios backstory to those movies was so cool and ofcourse thought it would be great if Lucas went back and finished those. But as time went I saw that Lucas had lost his touch and that script he wrote is dull and has no plot twists at all (all around him he has "yes people" who seem to like "everything" he says and does - no one will disagree with him). Ther are no new likeable characters and some incredibly wooden and unrealistic dialogue (he should definitely have let others direct Episodes II & III like before). In the original trilogy we had some great chemistry between the rogue smuggler Han and the cute but feisty Leia, the young and exiting Luke Skywalker, the wise old and noble Obi Wan, the smooth (and shaky) Lando Calrissian, the mighty Chewbacca, those lovable droids of course and THE man himself Darth Vader! What we have now is some winy spoilt little brat of an Anakin trying so hard to show us his "evil" side, an Obi Wan in McGregor that is so desperatly trying to imitate old Alec Guinness (failing badly might I add), Natalie Portman hugely boring and drab as Padme and on hell of a predictible storyline. I tell you, Lucas has made a real mess of things here... let´s hope he redeems himself and the Star Wars legacy by producing a brilliant Episode III (the one episode that REALLY NEEDS to connect well to the old trilogy!). At least some saving grace...

Master Sifo-Dyas,

Here´s an earlier post by me. I would say it´s impossible not knowing the real deal about Vader/Anakin after the 2004 edition. It´s pretty much spelled out for you!

Yeah, and that "Hayden head thing" just goes to show that Lucas had never written the whole saga, but is writing this on the go as he´s filming the new trilogy. He´s making adjustments to the original trilogy according to what he´s concocting up for those new movies. If that "Anakin dies young and therefore his ghost images in young" explanation were in the original story which Lucas said he had to write back before he even finished the first one, then why wasn´t the ghost image of a young Anakin in the original Return Of The Jedi, why did he have the old Sebastion Shaw there?? This makes absolutely no sense.

And as Master Sifo-Dyas said, we are not stupid. We don´t have to be told everything twice to understand it and leave nothing to the imagination. This new method from Lucas is extraordinarily stupid considering when back in the late 70´s and early 80´s he had a much cooler and more adult approach to things by not showing everything to make sure those "moviegoer idiots" understand what he´s trying to say. He has obviously forgotten that classic saying; "less is more". You don´t need everything straight in your face - well except he has totally changed his audience for his movies - that is very young children who don´t understand anything!!

Also this is the scene how it was originally scripted and planned so it belongs in the movie. Also about the Greedo scene it has been fixed to look much better. The scene is just as good as it was originally technologically but it was still better for Han to shoot first. Also I like the new Emperor change. Id rather have him be the Ian Mckain then an old women with Chimpanze eyes. It ensures better continuality with Return of the Jedi and the Prequals. Ian Mckain also has a cooler voice then Clive Revel did. The new dialog also enhances the scene. I love the new cloud city. I don't know why I ever liked Cloud city before. Its just better now. Totally agree with you on the Hayden head change.

- I am fully aware of all the new DVD changes but still I would have prefered that Jabba scene omitted from the film. It was better IMO to have him as this mysterius character that was like a dark ominous figure in Solo´s life - something that threatens his life. After having seen this comical CG of him in ANH, well that just ruins it for me. Now he´s just a silly blob of fat, not at all menacing like he was when we finally saw him in Return Of The Jedi in all his slimey greatness.

Also, the new changes to the Han/Greedo encounter are not enough to make this scene convincing, not at all! Greedo still shoots first and Han "is just defending himself"! Come on peepz that is just plain stupid and a HUGE change to his character. This will continue to be my most hated change by Lucas.

And the actor who plays The Emperor is actually called Ian McDiarmid. And I agree he does a much better job of it than the other one, but those script changes to the scene are stupid and as I said ruin most of the surprise when we learn Vader is Luke´s father. And that´s not a good thing, since that was a pivotal scene in the original trilogy.
