Damn! That official release looks absolutely mindbogglingly gorgeous!! There is just no competing with that when it comes to bootlegs from the laserdisc. But from all of those shots it seems to be that the official release is a clear number 1 and followed (lightyears later) by the TR47 version. It´s definitely a bit sharper than MeBeJedi´s transfer and much more so than Dr. Gonzo´s muddy transfer. The TR47 transfer seems to have the best overall colorbalance, not too dark or too bright - a good middleground. Obviously I haven´t gotten the chance to compare all those "in motion" so I can´t comment on that, possible ghosting effects and so on.

Rikter, in what regard did you find it to be the best of the three? Was it the black levels, contrast, clarity, sharpness, colors, movement (ghosting) or what? You just state that everybody found the MeBeJedi version the best of the bunch but you don´t say why. Please give us the full details of your findings if you would?

I commend you for your work MeBeJedi, for if it were not for peepz like yourself, nothing would improove OT wise. We all want a better quality OT, or let me put it this way, the absolute best DVD transfer from the laserdisc source, so that it´s not in any way inferior... and hopefully things can be improoved upon in the process.

In order to crank up the contrast and make the blackness of space more dense as MeBeJedi has been doing, and in the process trying to make those boxes (garbage mattes) around the ships look less obvious (or dissapear), there is bound to be some loss of detail both in very light and very dark scenes. There has to be a middleground I think. And maybe the TR47 version is just that. We´ll have to see more comparison before we can decide which transfer is the best and truest to the original work.

AICN's Harry Knowles comments on the 'o4 DVD set

Why would Lucas add that stupid scream to the ‘97 version, to only remove it again for the ‘04 edition, what´s up with that?? I tell you why - because he doesn´t know what the hell he´s doing anymore - he has lost his vision. I bet he thought that scream was a great idea at the time but then somebody "with their marbles intact" tells him that this change doesn´t make any sense, because Luke chose to fall. Why the hell would he then scream like a scared little baby falling down? And also why would Han Solo not cover his own ass and take Greedo out before he did the opposite, it´s a clear "kill or be killed" situation without doubt in a brutal an unforgiving world of evil Empire domination. This kind of meddling and fiddling is just what Lucas is doing to our beloved OT, he´s making changes just for the sake of it and he doesn´s even know that they will be there in his next "ultimate vision" of those movies, he can´t be sure of those change, that has been proven with the "scream addition/removal". Somebody wiser who Lucas respects just might (and hopefully) come up to him and point out a lot of things that went awfully wrong since the OT versions. Let´s hope he listens, like before. Like when EVERYBODY were disgusted by the loathsome Jar Jar Binks in TPM. What did he do? He made his part in the next one almost non-existent.

An article of lies and disgust - George Lucas talks re the 2004 OT SE DVD release...

I´ve always been amazed at how much depth, emotion and nobility Frank Oz managed to squeeze out of that Yoda puppet. There are really subtle variations of expression and emotion that I would never have imagined would be possible with a puppet. They took a BIG risk back in 1980 by using a puppet as a pivotal character in one of the biggest movies of all time and thanks to the brilliance of Mr. Oz it worked - and not only worked but made this little green dude one of the most appealing characters in movie history - and not really equalled (or possibly toppled?) until recently with the astounding work of Weta Digital and Andy Serkis with the Gollum character in the LOTR trilogy. Of course Yoda is the king but you know what I´m on about. And I think the CGI Yoda doesn´t come close to what was acheeved back in 1980, there is ultimately something "lifeless" about the digital Yoda as opposed to the strangely "lifelike" Yoda puppet, it did manage a huge bond with audiences.

And btw, since you own (or have seen) the Definitive Edition laserdisc can u tell me what video problems it has besides being a little soft? Are there compression artifacts on it or some noise for example the scenes in the desert on Tatooine or the ice scenes on Hoth. How does the laserdisc handle those subtle color layers, is it smooth? Also, is the starfield in the opening scroll pristine and clearly defined or a bit muddled as in the DVD-R transfers? It´s kind of strange that on the TR47 transfer I recently got the opening scroll starfield is a bit muddled when static but then as the scene moves forward and movement starts it becomes really well defined and clear.

I got the 7 DVD Ultimate Set from TR47 a few days ago AND IT ROCKS!! Absolutely brilliant a/v quality! I used to watch DVD transfers of my 95 PAL VHS Widescreen set (in mint condition) and I thought they were pretty darn good, but the laserdisc-to-dvd transfers beat the crap out of it in every way. I expected the lower resolution of the NTSC signal to trouble me but the signal was fortunatly as good as PAL on my Pioneer 656 player. I´ve got a 32" Philips TV and it has a great zoom feature which makes the non-anamorphic transfers look amazing. And the sound on those discs is the best sounding Star Wars since I saw them in the cinema when the SE were shown. Incredible bass, clarity and high fidelity all around with great stereo effects. That´s what one gets from the original uncompressed PCM sound. Listening to the bass heavy tremble when Vader forcechokes is proof enough. I´m in love with this set, absolutely!

As for the rest of this 7 DVD Ultimate Set (8 if you count the artwork disc also), well we have all the Definitive Edition extras on one disc including the commentaries for various scenes. I don´t think to much of those commentaries cause they mostly directly repeat what´s said on the Lucas, Burtt and Muren interviews from that very same laserdisc collection. Then we have three extra discs, each focusing on one movie. Spread out over those discs are the four original (about an hour long each) documentaries; The Making Of Star Wars, SP-FX: Empire Strikes Back, Classic Creatures: The Making Of Return Of The Jedi and finally From Star Wars To Jedi: The Making Of A Saga. The quality on those varies since they are obviously taken from some old VHS tapes. Classic Creatures comes out worst here with pretty muddy visuals (but watchable), the others are fine. There are also 3 trailers for each movie (really old and nostalgic ones to, a hoot to watch including a rare Revenge Of The Jedi trailer.) Then we have some old interviews with Carrie Fisher, Billie Dee Williams and Harrison Ford as well as original audition tapes for Hamill, Ford and Fisher (really fun to see that). There are really fun bits from a Saturday Night Live episode with sexy Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia and the Star Wars episode of "That 70´s Show" which is really enjoyable to watch. Added to that are the funny Troops mocumentary, two deleted scenes (one with good old Biggs Darklighter and another with Luke watching the skies on Tatooine (without sound), an alternate Cantina scene (with some lady smooching from Mr. Solo), some THX promos, the bit where Bart Simpson blows up the Death Star (hilarious!) and a Star Wars franchise commercial for childrens underwear for example (that´s psychadelic)! Mighty fine extras I have to say. With this came the eighth disc with some cool artwork to print out for covers, discartwork and more).

All in all I have to say I´m massively pleased with this set and can reccommend it to anyone looking for a quality version of the OT, the best one IMO bar the official DVD release of the forthcoming Special SE which contain all sorts of unpleasantries. I just might skip the official release since I have those TR47 DVD´s to quench my OT Star Wars thirst. We´ll see...

An angry Review of the 2004 OT SE DVD's

- That´s the story I´ve always heard and believed (although Lucas has another more unbelievable version saying he saw that Obi-Wan had nothing to do but sit around and watch the action unfold in parts 5 and 6 and therefore he had him killed off). I remember reading an interview with Guinnes a few years ago where this was stated. Alec was always really bugged about how those "sci-fi nonsense" movies made him (or rather as Obi-Wan!) so well known over the world as opposed to his more respectable "shakespearian" roles.

An angry Review of the 2004 OT SE DVD's
Time
That sinister LOTR remark is just meant to be as a little swipe at Lucas for only releasing the SE. He can´t seriously think the LOTR trilogy beats the OT. No way.

And although the review is a little childish, it has many valid arguements which I totally agree with - let´s hope we get a LOT more of "negative" or "angry" reviews in the press in the coming weeks so hopefully the point will get across to Lucas. Fans are really upset about this. This is part of our life, our culture and our heritage as moviegoers, videobuyers, toybuyers - you name it. We´ve been supporting Lucas massively through the years all the way since 1977 and enabled him to do what he´s done. How about some got damn respect and support on his part to us then!

I know that if our voices are heard loud enough and long enough Lucas will eventually release the OT, I´m sure of it. There´s proof for this kind of turnaround for him with Jar Jar Binks for example. He released the TPM and fans absolutely hated and were gutted by this lousy character and he actually took note and made his part in the next one almost non-extistance. There probably a lot of other stuff he did change going into AOTC after hearing what the fans had to say, after all he HAS to make them happy or else he won´t see the ticket-, DVD- and merchandise sales he so obviously wants. We are, and have been paying for ALL of this, remember that Lucas! Time for some payback!

2001: A Space Odyssey Special edition with CGI
Time
Yes, thank god we have the masterpiece that is 2001: A Space Odyssey in it´s original and unaltered state. Just a simple cleanup and enhancement of the original film negatives was done for the brilliant DVD edition that was released a while back. That is one movie that´s going to be looked at in 100 years and people are going to be marveling at this movie with much more respect and admiration than Lucas´s heavily modified not so special "special editions" of the Star Wars Trilogy. No doubt. Now on the other hand if Lucas were to remaster the OT and release it (sure!), future generations would be kinder to his work and appreciate it more in a historical and artistic context.
