Idea: MY phantom edit

I like the first bit with the monster attacking them and the bigger fish eatting it. But then there's a lot of things I like in TPM that most people hate

Wanna do something controversial? Take out all of the cool parts and make it like a G rated kids movie.... all Jar-Jar er something!

actually thats kind of the way I'm leaning

HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE
Time
Harry Potter is way better then LOTR in many respects, it has proper foreshadowing and is well thought out, where as Tolkien just made it up as he went, and not that I don't love reading entire pages about grass growing, and what not, but its nice to read something where the writer understood the concept of brevity and leaving out the boring stuff

Dont get me wrong, I love LOTR, but I find Potter to be much better written in the sense of a compelling story told in an exciting fashion, and its a lot more modern and thoughtful then RIngs and its christian overtones and and racist undertones. A product of its time and place, I won't hold that against the dear professor, but it doesn't change the fact.

Either way, His Dark Materials is waaaaaay better then both Potter and Rings

Idea: MY phantom edit
Time

so I’ve often wondered what I would do in an edit of TPM.

Change the crawl, thats for sure. Nix the second sea monster, put back in some of the better deleted scenes… but what else.

I fall into the catagorey of fans that dislike AOTC more then TPM. Not that TPM is perfect, but I’ve always felt the issues with it were mostly conceptual, and not editorial. Anakin should of been older. Naboo should of been Alderaan, Obi-wan should of filled Qui-gon’s role, etc.

Still though, having recently completed edits of AOTC and ROTS, the temptation was there to do something with TPM. Both my other two prequel edits were greatly shortened, AotC down to 1h 45m, rots to 1h 50m. TPM could actually end up being longer, with the deleted scenes added and no Major sequences deleted from the movie. Watching it again recently, it did strike me how slow a movie it is, so adding running time does not seem advantagious.

But what to remove?

Simply cutting all of Jar jar’s dialogue does not seem logical to me, as many people have done in the past. Although he will have some trims here and there.

So then it hit me…

Delete all of darth sidious’ scenes.

I know I know, this seems absolutely ridiculous. and those scenes were to many the high points of the movie. But still, I always like to be contraversial, and and if I’m going to do an edit, I want to do something substancial.

The way I see it, if Palpatine appears, but sidious does not, this perserves the darklord’s identity all the way up to the end of AotC. ANd though it makes TPM a much less dark film, that sort of fits in a way as the first episode. So darth Maul would be the only darker element in the film.

I’m sure this will leave me open to critism, and I’m all for it. I’d like to get people’s thoughts on this before I go ahead with it.

Episode 3: Fan Editing Ideas Discussion

No offense Rebel Scumb, but if you take out soo much of the end, doesn't it make the 3rd act of ROTS quite emotion-LESS? I just think that if you cut out all of the one on one dialog, there's not much to connect to except some flashing action. Just curious.

Well I suppose thats up to the viewer to decide, I certainly don't find it that way, but then I always felt the emotion of the fight was waaaaaaaaay off anyways. Obi-wan lectures Anakin while he burns to death? Tells him he loved him, but doesn;t bother to help him or at the very least put him out of his misery. The talk on the landing platform remains, and without the sidious/yoda nonsense it makes the finale focus on the characters that matter to the main story, and not two supporting players just so they can have flashy fight that leads to nothing.

The dialogue afterwards remains where padme is in the hospital.

Wow, now that's a bold cut Rebel Scumb. While I do think it would go a long way toward preserving some of the mysteries and surprises of the OT, it leaves us with one very big continuity issue. Where does Obi-Wan get Anakin's saber to give Luke in ANH?

Well it doesn't perserve any of the surprises, we still see Anakin chared and burned get rescued by palpatine, and all the ensuing cyborgifcation. We can just assume he lost his limbs from the lava. He is climbing up the beach as per usual, all burned up when sidious arrives with the troopers to help him.

As for the saber, okay thats a bit of a reach, I still have the shot of Obi-wan picking it up off the ground, so presumably Anakin dropped it when he fell over the edge. Thats reaching a bit I know, but no more so then a lot of things Lucas has asked people to swallow from the prequels, and obviously if I had a shot of the saber falling from the tower to the ground where Obi-wan retrieves it I would use it.

But yeah, no secrets kept, sorry if I made it sound as though they were.

Yeah. I don't think Abram's is involved with the show at all after the pilot though. Just lended his name to get it made and wrote/directed the pilot and helped map out the series. Its lindeloff at the helm now.

Tonights was solid, best one of the season hands down. proves that character driven storytelling beats big revelations.

In an interview Lindeloff said in the episode next week we will find out Ana lucia's profession, and it would shock us. I'm banking on Nun

Also, if anyone has spoilers for the show and posts them make sure you put a spoiler warning because I try to avoid them.

THE FAN EDIT CONTEST HAS A WINNER !!! REVIEWS IN OFF TOPIC FORUM

My aotc edit is done except I need to redub a droid with my roommates voice, and then suss out how to burn a dvd (yeah I suck)

I had to delete all the footage from RotS off my Mac as I ran out of HDD space, since the feature I am Executive Producer/editor has over 25 hours of raw footage. But Ikept the finalcut final open so in theory I should be able to re-rip the dvd then just put the footage back online and it will automatically snap back into the edits I made,

fingers crossed

JUST as a side note since I see that DAYV has a cut of WIllard, one of my best friends made the extensive behind the scene documentary for that dvd and is currently hard at work doing the Final destination 3 featurette for Wong and morgan

Padme and anakin on the balcony, anakin awakening, anakin and padme on the terrace, Anakin and Yoda, General grievous using lightsabers, Yoda fighting palpatine, yoda fighting stormtroopers, anakin and padme talking politics, about half of the mace vs palpatine fight, plus the whole part where he is deflecting the lightening, and Anakin in the council chamber looking out the window to padme, plus half the opera scene. Also the war room scene is gone where Mace senses a plot to destroy the jedi and the scene where anakin tells mace that Palpatine is a sith is gone as well

The final duel is also only about 2/3 of its normal length. No lava surfing or fighting on the table.

Upon reflection I am going with my leaner cut, although I did end up putting in 3 of the deleted scenes after all. Obi/mace/yoda scene is in to fill in some story elements from a scene I cut. The first mon motha scene because I needed a scene to go between obi leaving for utapau and him arriving and I liked its OT value even though the scene itself is sort of dry. And I put dagobah in just for fun although I don't feel its nessesary I just figured it would be kind of neat to have it in there. Its funal running time is 1h 50m

although I was reviewing it today and the deleted scenes have a bit of distortion so I'm not sure if I am just going to have to cut my losses and accept that, or if I can find a way to effectively capture them
