Why doesn't Lucus just release both versions?
Time
Sadly I was too young to see the OT in theatres, but I remember the toys for ROTJ. Then when I was 6 or 7 I saw ROTJ on video, and about a year later I saw ESB. Then for some weird reason I waited another two years before seeing ANH.

I was mainly just into ESB as a kid, but when I hit about 13 or 14 (so around 1993 - 1994) I got more into SW as a whole.

Steal the coding that is used when you click the image button above to attach an image to a post reply (the one that looks like a picture frame) and use it to find the animated image. Then, before you actually post your reply, copy the code and go into your profile setting and use that code as your signature. It will load any image you want as a signature.

Or were you asking how he animated it? If so, I'll defer to him.

No I think that answers my question. Its been so long since I've done any HTMLor Java that this stuff is a complete mystery to me.

Info: OT Bootleg DVDs

When I hear people tell me--with pride--how much they're getting out of Netflix thanks to their DVD burners, I get pissed.

I feel the current industry paranoia regarding movie and music pirating is more than just paranoia. While I'm worried they'll take copy protection measures too far, I can't blame them for trying to defend their intellectual property from a society that believes they deserve something for nothing.

The OT is different though. The official word from Lucasfilm is that the original cuts no longer exist. Period. They're gone forever.

If that's the case, is it really bootlegging? How can you bootleg something that doesn't exist? If Lucas truly has cast aside the original cuts as mere workprints not worthy of their own DVD release, why should he even care if people are copying old laserdiscs?

You also have to consider that we're talking about something the vast majority of consumers would be more than happy to pay for if given the chance.

I'm a huge fan of Stanley Kubrick. My favorite filmmaker, bar none. I don't think it's possible to convey my respect for his work with mere words. Pretend for a moment he's still with us and his collection of work hasn't been released in a wonderful box set. We're still getting by with pan and scan VHS tapes and the letterbox laserdisc of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Kubrick announces that he's no longer satisfied with his work on 2001, and he's going to replace some of the effects with CGI. The original theatrical version will not be made available on DVD.

I'd bootleg the laserdisc without hesitation. Despite all my respect for the creator of the work, his disregard for its effect on me renders that respect null and void.

That's what all this really comes down to. Respect. We respect the artist, and in return the artist respects us.

And we both respect the work. That is paramount.

I'm not feeling very respected by Mr. Lucas right now. Something tells me that if the theatrical cuts had a voice, they'd say that they're not feeling very respected by Mr. Lucas either.

I'm more than happy to give them the respect they deserve by preserving them for future generations, with or without Mr. Lucas's approval.

I agree, but to me bootlegging is when you copy something that is not yours, then sell it. And thats my concern. Its one thing to make a copy for your own use, or even for a few friends, but when it becomes a source of income that is a problem

I totally agree that Lucas' stance ont he oT not existing blurs the line a lot here, but if we just go bootleg crazy then two things will happen:

1)The credibility of this site will diminish as it becomes a place for people to pan handle their bootlegs

2)Many people will jsut give up on the goal of the petition and just settle for bootlegs.

Thats all me and DAYV are getting at. I'd love to have a dvd burn of the OT laserdiscs. And Jay its your site and your policies, I'm just voicing my concern. I agree with everything you said above, if GL is saying the OV doesn't exist anymore then its hard to turn around and say we can't copy it, but the fact remains that the footage and sound in said non-existent OV is still his intellectual property to do with as he pleases.

If people want to talk bootlegs thats fine, I just don;'t want to see this become "that site where you can get a SW bootleg"

If they redo the transfer so it's on par with AOTC, I might pick it up. The current release has some of the worst edge enhancement I've ever seen. The quality of the film stock they used was subpar as well. A new all-digital transfer would be a worthwhile upgrade.

Its weird, I always thought TPM looked gloriously better then AOTC, until I went to my inlaws house who have a huge widescreen TV. Man AOTC looked damn sharp, and TPM did not.

Well we'd all go see it, I just think it would likely dissappoint.

You mean back in 1995 when it was suppose to come out?

This movie has had more delays then the new superman.

If anything I'd rather they just start over and either remake Raiders or doa new series about Indy with a younger actor.

Personally I've always thought Edward Norton would make a cool indiana Jones.

regarding the ultimate editions. I have it from several sources whom I trust that they are in the works. Of course nothing is certain, after all LFL annouced a raiders of the lost ark special edition (yep just like the SW trilogy) for last year that was suppose to go to theatres. It never happened. ANd that was offically announced.

I would stake my rep that there will be a 2007 SE for the OT including new changes such as inserting Bail into ANH, replacing the ESB emp with Ian McDiarmid and putting the imperial march into ANH.

This movie will never ever get made. And personally I'm glad, because I'm certain it would be awful.

Evenif they had started this summer, it would not be out until summer 2005. That's 16 years since the last crusade. Way too long.

And I think both Spielberg and Lucas are slipping, I can't see them making this movie in a way that will please us. There's no need to go into Lucas because its all be said before, but I'm in the club that thinks Spilberg lost his spark a long time ago as well. The only one of his movies I've liked since Jurassic park (which looking back is a highly flawed and problematic movie, FX aside) has been Catch me if you Can, and even it suffered the same problem that Minority report and AI did which was and ending that just would not end.

As for Darabont, I liked Shawshank, actually loved it. Green Mile not so much and the Majestic was okay. How good his Indy script was, we'll probably never know.

And Ford, don't get me started on him.

Personally I think we've all been spared a sequel that would almost certainly have embarrassed the franchise. Sure I would of lined up opening night to see it, but I can almost guarntee the Indy magic would be long gone, and instead we'd be treated to a lot jokes about Ford's age, a plethora of CGI, and a lot of santized PG violence, and PC values.

I like the new ending to Jedi, however i agree the luke scream is awful.

The problem with the confrontation scene (number 1) is obviously the way Han Solo jerks his head Abruptly and not so much that Greedo shot first. "

But more distressing is that it deflates Hans character Arc. The whole point is he is suppose to seem like a guy who cannot be trusted when we first meet him, a shoot first ask questions later kind of guy. We hear him guarntee to Luke and Ben that he can get them past the empire, then a moment later discover he dumps his cargo at the first sign of imperial cruisers. By having Greedo shoot first, it makes Han less of an anti-hero, and also makes absolutely no sense, given that we see Han drawing his pistol under the table (if he was not going to shoot, then why?). And of course there is the most obvious problem that it makes no sense that Greedo would miss from that distance. I could see if they had added in Han kicking the table which would hit Greedo and make him miss. But they didn't. He just missed from point blank range.

The Jabba the Hutt Scene simply fails to look right as there is no continuity whatsoever between his appearance in Return of the Jedi and now The Phantom Menace and his appearance in Star Wars. Also, I dont think there should have been humor (tail step) added to it.

Agreed. And again it just deflates his character. This is the guy who feeds helpless women to monsters for sick enjoyment, yet he lets Han step on his tail???

And as I said above, the scene adds nothing to the movie, its just repeated dialogue from the Greedo scene. ANd redundant scenes should always be cut.

Has anyone tried to re edit the SE yet? like the "phantom edit" but with the original trilogy?
Time
The problem is that simply cutting out Jar jar and Jake Lloyd doesn't really help the movie, and from my viewing of the TPE, it actually hurt the movie as now these two characters seem to come out of nowhere for the final battle.

TPM is not a perfect movie, but its problems lie in the basics of its story, ie: Anakin being 9 years old. No amount of editing will fix that. AOTC on the other hand, can be saved immensely through editing. Though its script was equally if not more problematic, its editing was the real disaster, and a lot of improvements can be made by simply cutting, reinserting and rearranging certain elements.

ie: swapping the meadow picnic with the first kiss scene. Taking out the queen jamilla scene and putting in the padme's family scene.

I cut it out in my version. Yoda walks in, Dooku says ""you have interferred for the last time" then uses the force to knock over the pillar, Yoda uses the force to stop it from crushing Obi-wan and Anakin as Dooku flees.

the movie works MUCH better that way.

Definitely. And for many reasons:

1. Jay's commitment

2. The worthy cause

3. All the great regs like Motti, Luke, Bossk, Gundark, DAYV and RRS

4. The technical layout of the site: ie naviagation, colour scheme, user friendly set up

5. almost none of the BS you find on any other SW site (once and a while we have a trouble maker wander in though)

"Unlike all these sites, originaltrilogy.com is not funded by advertising. I built it myself, I pay for the hosting costs. I have no agenda other than that listed on the home page--the release of the theatrical cuts on DVD. That's where my goals end. Aside from a mention on my resume, I get no returns on my investment."

Which is why we love you Jay, and why OT.com will always remain my first priority.

The Star Wars web community has become overrun with sellouts who are more interested in increasing exposure to their sites than they are in reporting news and remaining relevant. There are very few genuine film fans remaining among Star Wars fans; fanboys are in charge now.

Agreed. Many of them guilty of the same things they bash George Lucas for.

I'm pretty sure that if this year's release of the Special Edition won't include the OT, because of Lucas' veto, the chances that he'll let his beloved Archive Editions (what he himself imagines as his ultimate vision of the saga) be littered by the 'dreadful' OTs are below zero.

Don't forget that he stopped the release of the ultimate version of the Episode II Soundtrack for no apparent reason. And that was after Sony Music was already finished with producing it.

I don't want to tear down your heads up, Rebel Scumb. But I think we shouldn't underestimate the current situation. If George Lucas really doesn't care about this 2004 release, there would have been a much larger chance of the OT being included with the soon obsolete SEs than with his beloved Archive Edition.

I'm not saying I'm giving up. I'm just saying it's not september yet and I haven't given up on the dream of a 7DVD set (along the lines of the Alien Qaudrilogy) yet.

Well from a technical standpoint, they do not have enough time to put one together by September 2004. It takes a long time to put these things together. And from what I've heard tell, they are already waaaay behind schedule due to technical glitches in the digitizing process. So at this point a 7 disc set is out of the question.

Also, there is not a lot of material from the OT era left to supply extras, so the OT was always going to have less in the way of bonus material then the PT which has stuff made just for the website and DVDs.

Quote

That's why I think we need to get more media attention. Not to convince people of our point of view. But to inform them of the current situation. Only then will the people have a choice. If CNN money can report about the Half-Life 2 Source code theft, there's no reason why they shouldn't report about Lucas already considering the OT as non-existent.

In my opinion, even if the petition breaches the 1 million mark, it won't do much good without any media attention.

I agree, but the time for the media attention will fall between the release of the 2004 dvds, and the may 2005 release of Ep3.

George Lucas' explanation why the OT is obsolete to him
Time
According to Lucas, he was exhausted and thought it would be easier to manage that way, I believe he gave himself a heart attack making ANH (literally). But then when TPM came out he said he would direct all the prequels because getting another director just meant another person to fight with over creative differences and he wanted to elimiante that as much as possible. A purer path of getting his ideas to the screen with fewer intermediaries is how I interpretted it.

Whether this was the reasons back in 1980 I do not know. GL has a habit of changing more then his movies with time.
