A Nightmare on Elm Street

Pretty good all around. The acting was pretty mixed, ranging from good (Nancy) to terrible (Tina). I was very glad when Tina got killed off early. Nobody gave a terrific performance. The teens did really stupid things at times (if you heard creepy whispering or screeching sounds, would you really go to investigate wearing nothing but pajamas?) Also, the only scene I was scared in didn’t even have Freddy in it, which was the hallway scene. I was scared during that scene because the prosthetics they lumped on Tina’s face were disturbing, and the actress who played the hall moniter really unnerved me for some reason. Overall, a 2.5-3/4. Can’t really decide. I think I will skip the others.

I still need to get around to rewatching the sequels and the remake sometime soon.

The old forum had a fixed width of 960 pixels, just as the desktop layout on the current forum does:

http://web.archive.org/web/20150428220939/http://originaltrilogy.com/FORUM/

Some of you have selective memory.

The current forum DOES resize based on your display size. Load it up on a phone or tablet; it’s fully responsive. The old forum did NOT do this, and it was awful on anything smaller than a large tablet. If you’d used your browser’s dev tools to inspect the source, you would’ve seen the media queries you described.

Go ahead and set the primary container’s width to 85% using your browser’s dev tools and maximize your browser window. I don’t think it’ll be quite as nice on your large display as you seem to believe, unless you enjoy reading entire paragraphs as a single line of text:

Alright.

Since I size the font to be smaller than default on Nightly, could there be something on the sides similar to Nexus? I don’t care for default font sizes.
Also would like to post in different fonts. i.e. Times New Roman or Verdana.
Would love to multi-quote.

What are you reading?
Time

Been reading a lot of books on my phone. THE WITCHER: The Last Wish; The Dunwich Horror and Herbert West: Reanimator by H.P. Lovecraft (Obviously. Have 171 Lovecraft books on my phone); STAR WARS: A New Dawn, Dark Disciple (After I finish The Clone Wars Legacy reels.), all the current canon STAR WARS books I have on my phone except for Tarkin but no YA novels; Master and Commander Aubrey/Maturin books by Patrick O’Brian.

Really looking for an epub reader for my Windows computer since I have the enhanced versions of The Making of STAR WARS, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi by J.W. Rinzler. No tablet.

Also been meaning to read more Heinlein, Stephen King, Asimov, Clarke, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (I do have the fully complete Sherlock Holmes), Ray Bradbury, H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, L. Frank Baum (Have all of his OZ books on my phone), and more.

How about adaptive screen resizing? This forum should natively support any display it’s on. NOT be extremely narrow as it is right now.

Y’know, it’s really easy as fuck HTML5 coding with a bit of CSS3 thrown in:

@media only screen and (max-width: 480px) and then @media only screen and (min-width: 1900px) including greater.

I’m viewing this forum on a 1080p display. It should automatically fit the width of the display within an appropriate wrapper which should be around 85% and a margin which could be at 5%. If I were to view on a full 4K monitor it should be adaptive to it also.

The old forum was better for proper forum width.

EDIT: Also, small icons to see if a user is online or not next to their avatar. How’s about a small on/off one which is green for on and empty while off?

Ranking the Alien films

I got every Alien game on steam recently… Isolation was definitely the best. Alien games should really be survival horror. Colonial Marines wasn’t as bad as everyone said, but was kind of repetitive, with pretty bad graphics. Alien vs Predator Classic 2000 I haven’t played yet. Alien vs Predator 2010 was pretty good, especially Predator mode.

ALIEN games should be survival horror, similar to the 1979 film. ALIENS games should be shooting stuff, especially the versus Predator games. Course I wish they’d adapt some of the comics into games and give different genres for a lot of them. Infestation was a quite good side-scroller for DS.
Course I’d love to play a squad based ALIENS game which would be similar to Ghost Recon or Rainbow Six.

i own the alien quadrilogy blu-ray box but have only watched the first two (and even then i saw Alien looooooong before i ever finally got around to watching Aliens), am I missing much?

I guess my rankings would be

Alien: *****
Aliens: *** and a half

Alien Quadrilogy is the DVD set. Alien Anthology is the Blu-ray set. (6-Discs with the last two jam packed with bonus features.)

Really hoping those ALIEN Appendix fan discs could be redone as Blu-rays with less discs needed. Same exact content, just ported to BD25 with multiple options in the menus. Aren’t the majority of them on DVD5 and barely any on DVD9? I’ll need to search for that thread.

So, I’m just gonna list by preference. (Unoffical cuts count along with certain video games? I own the UK Blu-ray disc Anthology set along with ALIEN: Isolation, ALIENS versus PREDATOR 2000, ALIENS versus PREDATOR 2 + Primal Hunt, and ALIENS versus PREDATOR 2010. All of them PC.)

ALIEN: Extended Edition (130+ minute runtime? Has same pacing as Theatrical Cut and is my go-to version.)
ALIEN: Theatrical Cut
ALIEN: “Director’s” Cut (More an assembly by FOX though.)

ALIENS: Special Edition (I think there’s a certain cut which retains the majority of scenes from the Special Edition but trims a couple.)
ALIENS: Theatrical Cut

ALIEN³: Special “Assembly” Cut (Especially the Blu-ray version which has the proper ADR for the majority of the characters which didn’t have them in the DVD version. This version has completely redeemed the movie to me.)
ALIEN³: Theatrical Cut (I don’t even watch this version anymore.)

ALIEN: Resurrection (Doesn’t matter which cut. Needed a different script and such. Maybe if FOX started to adapt the Dark Horse Comics mini-series. Maybe starting with ALIENS: Labyrinth and some others?)

PROMETHEUS (Yep I own the 3D Blu-ray release, especially for the exclusive bonus disc of extra features. Wondering if there’s a custom BD25 or whichever which adds certain deleted or extended scenes. Going to see what Rid does for ALIEN: Covenant.)

AVP and AVP: Requiem (I’ve no desire for owning either of them. FOX should’ve just adapted the Dark Horse Comics featuring Machiko Noguchi into a film. Also hoping for a premium channel ALIEn/ALIENS/PREDATOR/ALIENS vs. PREDATOR live-action anthology series.)

Games:

ALIENS versus PREDATOR 2 + Primal Hunt (Love this one the most. Hoping it’ll receive an enhanced remake. ONLY newer graphics since I have to modify the .ini file to run this 1080p. I play this one and 2010 the most.)
ALIENS versus PREDATOR: Gold Edition/2000
ALIENS versus PREDATOR: 2010

ALIENS: Colonial Marines (Never really played it. Only really wanting to since Michael Biehn is back as Corporal Dwayne Hicks, sorta similar to the ALIENS mini-series featuring Hicks and Newt in their first edition/printings, with Al Matthews as Sergeant Apone, and Lance Henriksen as another Bishop android.)

ALIEN: Isolation (VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Especially on a very nice self-built computer. Since all settings can be then set on maximum.)
Finally has me terrified of the Xenomorph again since I first watch ALIEN and ALIENS on Laserdisc or VHS back in the late 1980s. Absolutely love this game and gives the perfect interim for the period in-universe which ALIEN and ALIENS takes place. Obviously since Creative Assembly, HUGE fan of the TOTAL WAR Series and really hoping they’ll make another ALIEN game, had tons of design documents and more from 20th Century FOX. A movie licensed game done perfectly, IMO.
Come to think of it, I’d even love it if Creative Assembly even made the fourth ALIENS versus PREDATOR game. As long as it has the branching elaborate and very well written storyline featuring the three species which AVP 2 + Primal Hunt has.)

Then there’s ALIENS by Konami, ALIEN versus PREDATOR by Capcom for Arcade, ALIENS versus PREDATOR for Jaguar, ALIEN: Isolation for DS, ALIEN³ for multiple systems, ALIEN for older computers, ALIENS: The Comic Book Adventure, and more.

I didn’t really rank them but oh well.

Harmy’s primary source is the Blu-rays, so the grain is already massively changed from the start–see below, where you can see evidence that the Blu-ray was scrubbed clean of grain, processed, and then slathered in fake grain:

http://originaltrilogy.com/post/id/901920

As far as I know the only thing he’s doing grain-wise is grain matching, so that footage from an upscaled Laserdisc master blends better with Blu-ray footage (i.e. judicious application of fake grain). The only bits with real grain in them would be the 35mm footage (projection prints, not IP’s or negatives). It’s not Lawrence of Arabia, but the damage wasn’t done by Harmy.

I blame Lowry for the 2004 transfers since they love DVNR and EE just about everything they received. It’s why I mentioned the more current transfers for those films I listed. Of course film remastering and restoring is a constantly advancing field.

Harmy said:

Well, here’s the deal - I do degrain the 35mm shots quite a bit and then add new fake grain to them that matches that of the Blu-Ray to make them match better. There is actually usually some slight detail loss, but it is a necessary evil, because it’s important to make the sources match a well as possible.
Of course from multiple sources. Just wish I had a company which had an 8K film scanner and also the print which is in the National Registry or whichever. Would do proper scans and proper 1977 style film-grain retention for that particular print of the film. Both 70mm and 35mm audio tracks.
The 70mm was a blow up for the “Roadshow” style releases, correct? Well, whichever avenue had or has the projector capable to screen it.

I was able to find the 720p 3GB torrent for this, along with STAR WARS and The Empire Strikes Back, but don’t know which version number it is. […]

Which version you have is shown after the end credits. After the last of the end credits scroll by, the screen fades to black and the music ends, wait about 5 seconds and the version information will appear.

[…] EDIT: For the Despecialized, STAR WARS is v2.5, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi is MMXI. I’ll look for newer versions of the latter two.

MMXI is 2011 in roman numerals. That indicates it is v1.0

I don’t think ROTJ has an official version beyond 1.0 (yet. 2.0WP is not technically an official release.) But ESB 2.0 is out. You should get that while waiting for Harmy to finish up ESB v2.5.

I know my roman numerals and obviously it’s a version from 2011. 😉

This forum really needs a multi-quote function.

All-in-all, I just want to have the best possible presentation, as mentioned A LOT, of STAR WARS, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi the day of release from their respective years. Of course I first watched them on VHS, CED, and LD back in the early 1980’s.
Of course I wouldn’t mind if Harmy, maybe he already has?, of the 1981 re-release with the EPISODE IV A NEW HOPE added to the crawl. Also need to check if someone has a very high resolution, 720p or 1080p with all grain retained etc., for the 1997 Special Editions.
Am very glad I found a fan who has the v2.5 of STAR WARS as a custom BD25 on The Spleen. Found mkv’s for TESB and ROTJ there too which would properly fit on a BD25 as a custom Blu, sans menus.

Keep up the great work, Harmy! (One nitpick, I’d love to have a ton of subtitles for the OGOT.)

REVIEW: The Clone Wars TV series from 2008: surprisingly well done

Man, I just watched a clip of Rebels, and the style of everything is complete shit. Every surface is oversimplified. All the sets look like they were designed by Playskool/Tonka and the costumes look vomitously childish, in friendly colors with pointless straps and pouches everywhere - “Hey kids! Check out these ADVENTURERS®!”.

And what’s with the goatees? Why do people still put that on a character to make them “cool”? I’m surprised they didn’t add a “space fedora” to the costume >_<;;

On the flipside, the action and writing didn’t seem bad right away.

I’m probably going to watch this too, just to see what happens with Ahsoka, but I am not looking forward to it. This is going to be hard to get through.

I’m really wishing the entire series isn’t just going to be about the crew of the Ghost. Maybe branch off into anthology territory instead of solely focusing on them. Also agree everything is far too oversimplified but if it takes them shorter to make the Seasons compared to The Clone Wars then eh, whatever.
Really hoping for more Tarkin and less kid friendly plots. Still disliking the aspect ratio chosen for the show. One caveat is I’ve already mentioned they’re using a lot of Ralph McQuarrie’s designs but rather they have more detail in the CG for everything.
Also noticed some users on here have made custom Blu-rays of certain arcs for The Clone Wars. Still should browse around for them.

Harmy is keeping the film grain and not doing any unnecessary DVNR, correct? I want each of the STAR WARS OT films to appear as though the day they were released. Of course 1977, 1980, and 1983. Pristine prints. Of course that’d need to be from a negative or an answer print for 4K or greater scanning. Obviously that’s just nuts.

i.e. SPARTACUS, My Fair Lady, Lawrence of Arabia, and more proper remasters and restorations is what I’d love to see for the OG OT.

So - I see that most of the stuff I liked as a kid (the Ewok movies, the Droids and Ewoks cartoons) are not on the canon list. Quite sad. Though it’s still in my personal canon.

Who cares about personal canon now?

Sure there’s some of us who love certain aspects of LEGENDS continuity such as the KotOR games, Republic Commando, the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series, and more. Also those who take the current continuity with welcome relief. Especially for those such as myself who stopped being a fan in 2006 and sold the majority of their STAR WARS stuff.

Makes the current continuity much easier to accept and having LEGENDS as baggage.
But I wish the rest of the episodes could’ve been completed for The Clone Wars as I felt it was very well made. Especially the Second Battle of Geonosis Arc. Far superior compared to the prequels and this is from someone who barely remembers being 1 year old watching The Empire Strikes Back in cinema in 1980. Also 4 in 1983 for Return of the Jedi.

But I wish REBELS was also 2.35:1-2.4:1 and the same design style as THE CLONE WARS, even though I watched REBELS first.

So, are they going to have more comics and books concerning THE CLONE WARS Legacy planned?

EDIT: Regards to Darth Bane’s design. (Might’ve mentioned it last page.) The Clone Wars > Legends.

Yeah but it’s now LEGENDS canon.

So are both of the games. Even SWTOR is non-canon and they’re still producing new story content for it.

It’s best not to worry about what is or isn’t canon. Just search out the most entertaining and enjoyable material and forget the rest.

I’m glad I can forget about the Yuuzhan Vong now since to me they were one of the most less desired aspects regarding LEGENDS canon.

My two cents:

  1. DO NOT watch the movie. It is just plain AWFUL. The only thing you miss is the introduction of Ahsoka and that’s really not worth the rest of the hour and 36 minutes of pure sewage. And this is coming from a fan of the Holiday Special!

  2. I wouldn’t recommend the chronological order for anyone as their first run through of the series. Each season has its own momentum and progressively gets better and better with each.

I watched it in chronological order the very first time and I heavily enjoyed it. Even more-so compared to REBELS. Especially since it’s in 2.4:1 scope and not 1.78:1. Also because of the over-arcing stories too.

I am just hoping for some extra scenes. At least “deleted scenes” in bonus materials. To be honest… I could’ve stayed in my seat for 30min longer watching TFA.

My reaction while watching was, “Okay, we’re probably 15% through and they haven’t screwed it up, that’s great… Okay, we’re 30%, 60% and it’s still great, this is going to be a solid SW film… oh shit oh shit this has to end at some point.”

Edit: Also, JJ said there will be 10-20 minutes of deleted scenes on the Blu-ray.

I hope those 10-20 minutes of deleted scenes on the Blu-ray will be fully finished with the special effects. I’m really wanting an Extended Edition Cut for The Force Awakens on a custom Blu-ray from someone here on OriginalTrilogy.com

Also hoping there’ll be another comic which takes place at least 10,000-25,000 BBY.

The Knights of the Old Republic was a great comic series.

Yeah but it’s now LEGENDS canon. How many issues did it run for though? I have 52 issues of them on my server.

Really hoping MARVEL will have some Infinities-style mini-series which uses abandoned concepts and earlier drafts of scripts for comics. The ones which they might be unsure could be part of the A STAR WARS Story movie anthology series. Abandoned concepts for video games and more.
Also comic book adaptations of the Current Canon Del Rey books would be nice.

This project looks really cool, and I’m quite interested. Also, after reading you and others talk about what to call the different SE’s, I just thought, wouldn’t it be best just to call them:

Special Edition (1997)
Special Edition (2004)
Special Edition (2011)

I’ve always been bothered by the use of weird differentiating terms like ‘redux’. It makes it sound like a cheap fanedit, and the SW SE’s have never officially even had any sort of ‘redux’ or ‘director’s cut’ tag on them. Though I am fine with the term ‘director’s cut’.
I hope your able to finish this project, as many people will be very happy with it, I’m sure, and that includes myself.

I’d call the 1997 Special Edition the 20th Anniversary Special Edition, the 2004 the DVD versions, and the 2011 version the Blu-ray disc release. If it were me.
