Star Wars Expanded Universe and Official Fan-Made Stuff question.

Ummm... read that part one more time... I'm sure you will start laughing
(what I wanted to say: the original movies were altered many times, this includes even some very serious changes - see Palpatine's conversation with Vader in ESB. With George Lucas on the loose, nothing is set in stone... but I get your point, belive me - I don't like most of the EU stuff myself, with that all-new "Jedi religion" stuff being so overhyped - STAR WARS was once a western in space, dammit!)

Palpatine's crew?
Time
Fat Jedi is right. I noticed this as well and always wondered why did they have to ***** up that too.

Palpatine was always portrayed as racist: he hated aliens, perhaps believing in superiority of the "master human race" (whateveryacallit), that's why the Empire was enslaving aliens from many worlds - take Wookies, for example. They were used for hard manual labor. Wasn't Ackbar Tarkin's slave?
The Empire is modelled in the movies to give us the "look&feel" of our real-world racist (hate-oriented or whatever you call it in PC lingo) systems/organizations. So you easily believe in racist Galactic Empire, because in its military ranks you see only white human males. While geeks may speculate on "what lies beneath stormtrooper's helmet" giving examples from EU, let's face it - this is how it was made for the movie and the effect is working. The contrast is well seen when compared to egalitarian Rebellion (that's how we call the Alliance ), where all not-necessarily-white men, women - and even non-humans! - are welcome.

It would give us a nice continuity - and again nice effect of contrast - if we could see that in the PT world even more crowded with alien races (see: the senate) Palpatine plots his dark deeds only with (white) humans. Because those pale ill-looking Imperial Officials were indeed creepy and sinister.

GL could use alien Palpatine aides on the condition of showing us in the end that they're expendable for Palpatine. So e.g. Maul could die because Palpatine intended him to perish in battle (to "free the slot" for new apprentice).

Instead we got a bunch of new costumes and CGI. Why? Is there a deeper meaning? No. "We added them because they look cool, aren't they? Look what we can do with our rendering farms!"

That was very insightful lesson

Now onto some lighter joke:

- Hello, are you there?
- Yes, who are you please?
- I'm Watt.
- What's your name?
- Watt's my name.
- Yes, what's your name?
- My name is John Watt.
- John what?
- Yes, are you Jones?
- No I'm Knott.
- Will you tell me your name then?
- Will Knott.
- Why not?
- My name is Knott.
- Not what?
- Not Watt, Knott.
- What?

Not necessarily. Compare with real propaganda poster.
As much as I hate this ESB poster (yes, I think it sucks, honestly), I would like to "defend" it in a way.

As I said before, the "artsy-fartsy" posters, as opposed to "hollywoodish" ones do not have to contain faces of the main cast etc. - they're often weird, to shock the potential viewer and draw his attention. Can you see Jack Nicholson in this 'Chinatown' poster? Or Dustin Hoffman here? And who is this mysterious Godfather? BTW: have you ever been to a poster exhibition in art gallery?

This ESB poster shows how sci-fi was perceived before the coming of "Star Wars". Compare this ufologist's book cover. Any flying saucers, any green/gray little men with big black eyes? It doesn't look as much "ufo-ish" as it should, right?

Such posters are made when the artist is given some (too much? ) liberty. Today we usually want the message to be unequivocal, because it has to be clear for the masses, which are ...not so bright ...err... I wanted to say: "not so sensitive to the subtle art" Commerce kills art.

Samples taken from www.theartofposter.com website, where they also offer some of those posters for sale (yes, those weird SW posters, too! )

I would say "this is what you would get as an illustration for sci-fi work (be it movie, story, magazine or book cover) in times before Star Wars". E.g. note the "countdown" element. I'd have to check if this guy made Polish covers for Daeniken's books or "Fantastyka" magazine (LOL, my Dad subscribed it, we even had the first issue, rare early sci-fi stuff here), as this ESB poster looks strangely familiar...
One thing that puzzles me is that this guy was probably already exposed to Star Wars (he did ANH poster), so... ?

LOL, Yoda Is Your Father: you gave me a good laugh, so here is MORE!

Please note - these are NOT my favorites
For historical references only. Not my scans - excuse the poor quality.

All taken from Polish www.starwarsy.pl website - its webmaster is a really crazy collector, with "bootleg" figures (made in countries being "behind the Iron Courtain" back then, when US merchandise was scarce), cut-outs from old magazines and newspapers... too bad you can't read his comments, these are hilarious.

It was even featured on that CD-ROM Star Wars encyclopedia "Behind the Magic". I don't have the time now to search for an online image, sorry. EDIT: LOL, I've just found it!
Polish poster school is AFAIK well respected in the art world, but I'm not sure if I wanted to have "too artsy" (i.e. "weird" ) poster for my movie. Hollywoodish approach may be boring and predictable, yet it has its pros, market-wise

How Star Wars names are translated in non-english countries...
Time
I admit that German-dubbed Emperor has a voice of a powerful wizard. Interesting alternative, methinks.

Ric's explanations gave me a good laugh - George L. and Ben Burtt should read it next time they decide to invent a made-up language / names.

OK, let's move to a next country:
-----------------------------------------
Poland

note: special diacritic marks are ommited here, for compatibility.

Translations:
----------------
Not much, especially when compared to France
We like foreign stuff, that's our trait.

original English - translated to Polish (translated meaning in English)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Star Wars - Gwiezdne Wojny (Stellar Wars or Star Wars)
A New Hope - Nowa Nadzieja (A New Hope)
The Empire Strikes Back - Imperium Kontratakuje (The Empire Counterattacks, The Empire Strikes Back)
Return of the Jedi - Powrót Jedi (Return of the Jedi)
Millennium Falcon - Sokol Milenium (Falcon "Millennium"), 2 decades ago sometimes improperly named as Tysiacletni Sokol (Thousand-year-old Falcon)
Death Star - Gwiazda Smierci (Star of Death, Death Star)
blaster - miotacz ([ray] thrower, as in flamethrower)
lightsaber - miecz swietlny (lightsword, just what we've heard in TPM)
I've heard also some improper names for X-Wing, with "wing" part translated, but that was long time ago.

What's interesting, we often mispronounce Vader and/or misspell it to "Wader"
Also the declination of the word "Sith" is debatable

The Phantom Menace - Mroczne Widmo (Dark Spectre)
Attack of the Clones - Atak Klonow (Attack of the Clones)
Revenge of the Sith - Zemsta Sithow (Revenge of the Sith)

Dubbing:
-----------
Like with all movies for adults, original Star Wars was never dubbed in Poland - in the case of foreign flicks, we always read subtitles in the cinema and listen to voice over in TV. However with the new Prequels the distributor came with the idea of dubbing (hey, these are kid flicks, right?)... only to be bashed by faithful fans! They forced them to a compromise: TWO versions of the prequels were screened in the cinemas: dubbed (for kids) and subtitled (for fans).

I can't say anything about dubbed version, as I've never hear it

Unfortunately recently they started to translate and dub the LucasArts games, so I gave up with Star Wars games, because I can't afford to spend 3 times bigger sum of money to order the game from US/UK to get original voices/text.

And now something special: a poster from 1978 !
Star Wars: ANH was first screened here on 30th of March 1979.

LOL, just found this one:

Donald Rumsfeld is giving the president his daily briefing. He concludes by saying:
-"Yesterday, 3 Brazilian soldiers were killed in Iraq."
-"OH NO!"- the Bush exclaims.- "That's terrible!"
His staff sits stunned at this display of emotion, nervously watching as the President sits, head in hands.
Finally, the President looks up and asks:
-"And exactly how many is a brazillion?"

I never liked the WC universe - ie: the Kilrathi thing (big cats in space? c'mon!), the "more movie than game" feeling from WC3 upwards, the movie sucked major time...
But I have soft spot for WC2 and Privateer was always one of my all-time fav games - I just love the freelancing aspect in any game (generated vs scripted, branched vs linear, repetitive vs random).

Wing Commander - Privateer
Time
Older forum members probably remember the game Privateer, a spinoff to the famous Wing Commander series. Younger generation probably have seen the Wing Commander movie. Back in 1993, when Origin released Privateer, the Wing Commander II was one of the first games I bought for my "new" PC
Learn about the old game.

Privateer is a "space flight simulator" (well, more like an arcade shooter ) with strong adventure elements - you can roam anywhere, the freelancing part adds greatly to the gameplay. You may become a space mercenary, pirate, smuggler, merchant... and you don't "select your profession", you just do what you want Escort that fat freighter and defend if from pirates to get $, or blast it with your lasers and collect its cargo, debris and crew (!) to sell it later on the black market... even older gamers will naturally remember Elite or Frontier, younger ones may see similarities to contemporary MMOGs or games like X-Beyond the Frontier.

I had trouble running the said game on my old Win98 system few years ago, let alone now. But now we're given a new possibility:

A remake

Yes, a bunch of maniacs... err.. I mean talented and laborious people have resurrected a 1993 game using modern engine from the game Vega Strike (similar one to Privateer). The Privateer Remake was born. As it featured some more or less drastic changes/additions to the original, another group of "purists" created "a mod to a mod" which aims to recreate the old game even more closely: Privateer - Gemini Gold.

I have discovered it only several hours ago - I've just installed it and flew a bit. The biggest difference - and on the positive side - is the fact that all objects are 3D now, instead of original 2D sprites. This allows for more "realistic" space dogfight, as you can observe enemy's flight trajectory and make leading shot, while previously you never knew when are they going to make another 45-degree turn (limited animation frames).

Just take a look at the Privateer in new clothes:

Got this one from my friend:

A large group of Iraqi soldiers are moving down
a road when they hear a voice call from behind
a sand dune. "One United States Marine is better
than ten Iraqis!"
The Iraqi commander quickly sends 10 of his best
soldiers over the dune, whereupon a gun battle
breaks and continues for a few minutes, then silence.
The voice then calls out,"One United States Marine is
better than one hundred Iraqis!"
Furious, the Iraqi commander sends his next best 100
troops over the dune and instantly a huge fire fight
commences. After 10 minutes of battle, again silence.
The American voice calls out again, "One United States
Marine is better than one thousand Iraqis!"
The enraged Iraqi Commander musters one thousand
fighters and sends them across the dune. Cannons,
rockets and machine guns ring out as a huge battle is
fought. Then silence, eventually one wounded Iraqi
fighter crawls back over the dune and with his dying
words tells his commander,
"Don't send any more men, it's a trap. There's two
of them!"

Ad.1 - it was explained somewhere that Vader uses some "starwarsish" equivalent of I.V drip and feeding tube (fluids + nutrient pulp). He could breathe on his own for a brief moments when using Dark Side of the Force and while enclosed in his Meditational Chamber (air filters etc.)

Ad.2 - continuity problems. There must be some compartment in the fighter to stash the ladder, but on Dagobah there was no ground crew to service the fighter

Ad.3 - yet another thing said by Obi which is "true only from certain point of view"

"Rise, Lord Vader!" - my vision of ROTS
Time
Gaffer Tape - no problem, I'm not interpreting that as if you tried to argue with me

You made some valid points. I must say that I used "Vader missing Padme" because I saw that on screen - subconsciously I borrowed that from the movie, without letting my imagination to rewrite the story from the scratch.
Vader hating everything, including Padme for her "betrayal" should fit that character, too. However the latter SW movies tried to portray Vader not as 1-dimensional character as Palpatine (who could sing that retro song: "I'm such a cold bastard and I feel good with that, no doubt!", pure evil), as "there's good in him". So in my version Vader wants revenge on Palpatine - he's not just "power crazy", wanting to become "number one" because it's cool. Revenge for what? For loosing everything. This goal isn't against his way to the Dark Side - after all, he's fueled by hatred - even if it's hate to an evil person such as Palpatine is. This goal still isn't against his way to power - kill the old guy and get the whole Empire for yourself, to make up for what you lost. Makes sense?

About Annakin to Vader transformation - again my imagination followed what I saw in the movie, this time it was Obi-Wan. Kenobi's words give a feeling that Vader's inhuman behavior/morality is due to the fact that he's a cyborg now. So I imagined that his final step into the Dark Side (which includes getting new name) occurred when he was "transformed into machine". It has such "poetic" meaning: machines have no feelings, no mercy, no remorse. I even assumed - before I saw ROTS - that Vader will be instrumental in murdering the last Jedi Knights, i.e. he will personally slice the last most powerful Masters with his lightsaber (perhaps with a little help of Palpie in the hardest cases). I wanted to see Vader fighting in that armor, showing his superior powers to his former brethren. That was said before: "he helped the Emperor to track and kill the last Jedi". We saw him killing the Younglings - as far as condemnable is this evil deed of killing children (ie. requires you to be a real SOB), this is not a challenge in terms of using saber/Force in fight. Give this man some worthy opponent, some real challenge, not some dirty but "easy" job!

What do we get by this? - the Jedi would finally witness (on their own skins) how mighty is the Chosen One - and we could see it, too!
In the movie we only saw his evil side - not skill/power itself. We could argue that he demostrated a part of his prowess during the fight with Obi-Wan, but still...

Feel free to PM it to me - you're one of the few people on this forum who have similar views on Star Wars as me (or at least that's my impression).
I can share few comments with you, but I'm afraid I won't be able to join... reality is a bit harsh for me recently, so I have less time for hobbies, and I'm already deeply involved in my own big project (completely different subject - making add-ons for flight simulators) which takes all my available time, patience and energy.
