FanFiltration of the Planet of the Apes RELEASE THREAD (cancelled project - official product released)
Time
I don't even feel like I'm going out on a limb by saying that the ending of the original POTA is the best ending ever for a film. I still get chills up my spine every time I see it. I wish I could have caught it in the theater during its initial run.

And back to the "Apes" week. I have such fond memories of when ABC TV would do their "Ape" week. For those who are too young or don't remember they would show all 5 films in a row. Many times it was at 4:00PM. So me and my best friend would get together each night after school at one of our houses to watch all the films.

TV isn't the same.

Hey Suntech,

My hope is that this collates ALL footage that's ever been put out there on both the official releases and the fan circuit. I'll send you through one and you can have a look for yourself !

Cheers,

meedermow

Say, does this release also incorporate the alternate cocoon scene from the deluxe laserdisc version (it is also on the Alien laserdisc archive on the AQ set) where Ripley says she's getting Dallas out of there? I know the quality was kind of sketchy on it, but it's still a nice little addition.

Redux utilizes cocoon footage from both the Director's Cut as well as the Laserdisc(DVD) extras on the earlier releases. They are two different takes of the scene. And yes the whole thing runs much longer. It is truely an edit for the die hard Alien fan that wants to see everything available in one place. The average viewer would feel it drags. It has a much different feel than the official version.

Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal

Truth is, it is almost certainly possible to replicate the look of your Super8 with digital video of some sort. Maybe not straight outta the camera, but with post-processing it's not such a big trick to match the look and feel of film -- especially Super8. Just add in a bunch of grain, lots of dust, and the occasional hair, and you've pretty much got it!

Thinking of either film or HD as "the best" and the other not worth bothering with is sort of like arguing whether a convertible or a pickup is a better vehicle: it really depends on what you're wanting to do with it.

I don't know about you but not too many amature film makers can afford expensive HD video cameras. I bought my Super8 camera for $50. Sure 3 min of film costs you $20 in the end for purchase and developing. But for a short project and for the fun of actually shooting on film you can't beat it. You actually learn how to shoot and get it right the first time. And like many others have said HD resolution can't touch 35mm to 65mm clarity.

Saving 35mm prints goes beyond the movies as well. I read a story last year concerning the rock band Black Sabbath. Apparently when Dio was singing for them in the early 80's they filmed one of their shows for eventual release. There were a dozen or so canasters of 35mm film done. Well when Dio left the band there were apparenlty hard feelings and they decided to literally dump the project and they threw away all of the film. A collector rescued all of the canasters from the trash and they are still in the hands of a private collector to this day. Legal issues prevent them from distributing it.

Nah, it ain't.

RIJIR, would it be possible to rip the trailer and upload the VOB to somewhere (megaupload, rapidshare, yousendit, etc)?

Possibly. It might take a few days or so. Keep me updated on the status and let me know if you end up getting it sooner.
