The quality of the clip looks like it is from the dailies before the music was added. I don't think they ever found the original negative.

Okay now this might seem trivial to some. But I think this might be kinda interesting. How about a preservation project of just the studio/film company intros from theatrical movies and home video companies. This could include how some of their intros have changed over the years. Look at Universal for example. And for the video companies one that always comes to mind from when we first got our VCR was Thorn EMI. How about the old Wizard video company or some of the other obscure companies.
I just think that a compilation of those intros would be very nostalgic.

Yes and yes. They added narration that is just stupid. And some of the deleted footage that they add doesn't work. For instance when the group is standing around the "dead" thing that they brought from the dog kennel Blair makes the statement that it isn't dead yet. This totally screws up the scene where Fuces and MacReady are in the helecopter and he reads Blair's report and makes the same statement. I guess they had to add as much as they could to make up for the gore they cut.
There is really a lot of footage cut from the movie that we haven't seen like:
A whole scene cut when the lights go out
A scene like the 50s version of the greenhouse but in this one features a certain illegal plant
Other dead bodies at the Norweigan camp
The rescue of MacReady (filmed just in case they needed an alternate ending due to test audience reaction)
Plus a bunch more misc stuff.

Some of these are available in the bonus section of the DVD, some are not. This version of the movie is probably much worse than the original - they cut out all the gore scenes to make it less scary for the TV audience. And to maintain the length of the film, they added several scenes from their archives. However it may be an interesting experience to watch this version.
Maybe there was a thread about this movie on Originaltrilogy already, but unfortunately all old posts are deleted now. Any suggestions?

I actually recorded the premier broadcast on ABC but gave up half way through due to the butcher job they did on it. One thing I have that is cool is the short ABC promo that ran before the broadcast.

There seems to be much more to work from in its case:
- "There is a bootleg version of this film released by VidAmerica. It edits out the classic soundtrack and kills-off characters not killed in the theatrical version".
- "A colorized version was released on VHS in 1989 by Turner Home Entertainment as an "RKO Color Classic"".
- "Two scenes were added to the Laserdisc: the kissing scene and a scene of the slaughtered scientist hanging upside down being bled to feed the seedlings".

Does anyone have a copy of the LD transfered to DVD? I would love to see that footage.

Alien Saga retrospective (recorded from HBO)
I remember getting my father to tape this one for me when it aired. I didn't have HBO. He taped it unfortunately on a cheap tape in EP mode.
It was really cool to watch at the time because it featured some Alien cocoon scene footage. And this was before the laserdisc was released.
Out of all the deleted scenes I have ever seen for a film the Alien cocoon scene has to be the coolest. And to think we knew about it back in '79 as well. I have some magazines from the time that had photos from that scene.

In the scene where Ripley is making her way to the shuttle...when she turns the corner the Alien makes a quick appearance. Originally shot she turns the corner to find the alien folded into a "box" like shape. She gets a very good look at it and then it slowly begins to come out of it. The Heavy Metal Illustrated version of the movie (graphic novel version) that came out at the time had that scene in it. It also inlcuded the scene where the alien puts its tail into Bret's back.
Scott apparently shot a lot of footage showing the alien moving through the ship. But it was dramatically cut back for suspense. Sure it works better with less footage. But I would love to see that stuff. I wonder why stuff like that wasn't in the Quad box set?

Probably lots of set up shots. The beginnings and endings of almost all scenes extended. And from what I hear a lot of more footage of the Alien itself making its way around the ship including the much talked about "box" scene which shows the Alien folded into a box shape. This scene is in the Heavy Metal Illustrated edition.
