Info: OT Bootleg DVDs
Time
The DrGonzo set, or the Anamorphic set as we called it then, was the first set I ever got, and figured if this is all I could ever get I would be happy as I was impressed at the effort that was put into providing all the supplemental materials, and creating those decent looking menus as well as nice anamorphic picture and Dolby compressed audio.

When I first got the TR47 set and watched it on PC I was heavily disappointed as the clarity was awful in regards to encoding, and seemed a lot dirtier. Yet when I watched it on my TV which is a 2 year old Panasonic 68cm that although sounds measely compared to todays HD plama sets, is still a kick ass set to compare DVDs with.

On it the TR47 seemed sharper and the colours much stronger. I believe that the only reason DrGonzo seems to be blurry is because it was made anamorphic from a source that wouldn't exaclty be the smartest way to make an anamorphic version, but unfortunately we have no other way of doing it.

Truth is whether the new sets being ripped are made anamorphic or not, I'm glad I have the DrGonzo set so when I move out and get a 16:9 TV I'll have a set that does not require zooming in to watch "correctly", as I believe it is a rediculous idea to do so, and probably won't look as blurry when doing so. That's just my opinion.

No one stands around looking at Indy Jones and going "There's no way this movie looks like that. Look how COLORFUL it is. Look how GREEN those trees are. Why isn't everything more pale and washed out like my laserdiscs are?"

You've got people in here pissing all over a phenomenal restoration because it doesn't look like a early 90's laserdisc transfer, and that's silly as hell. You've got people trying to convince others that a washed out, desaturated image of Chewie looking more GRAY than anything is closer to correct because "There's no way that shade of brown exists on earth.." Which is in and of itself a ludicrous statement.

Totally agree with that. Although it is not unheard of that different regions have received different copies of the same master title from other regions due to some stupid marketting idea, I believe in this case it is more than likely the same, and people either have their equipment whether TV or PC setup incorrectly, or simply are too used to a poorer picture after years of the VHS and LD releases, which truthfully were always shit quality in comparison to VHS and LD copies of movies made around the same time as the original trilogy. It's sad but it's true, the OOT was/has never been released in a decent quality, but like I've said if the 93 or 95 LDs are the best copis of the OOT we'll ever have, I'm happy coz it could be worse.

In general if Star Wars, Empre, and Jedi were made in the last couple of years, the colours would have looked similar to what we see on the DVDs, regardless that this colour treatment has been done digitally. End of story.

Of course it's due to increased red color. Which is bad. Because it's quite oversaturated. But Laserman says that the R4 release isn't poorly color-corrected like the R1 NTSC release is, which makes me suspect that the PAL versions are much better than NTSC. Which makes me want a multi-region DVD player, in addition to getting the Japanese uncut Kill Bill V1 DVD...

Unless I am mistaken, R4 is NTSC. My in-laws are from Mexico so a lot of the DVDs they send me are either R4 or Region "1 y 4" and they are NTSC. Usually the main difference between what they get there in R4 and what we get in the states in R1 is that we cover English and French in NTSC where they cover English, Spanish and Portugese in NTSC.

I'll have to see if my brother-in-law picked up the set to see what he thinks.

As for getting a multi-region DVD player... your typical $20 to $40 DVD Player can easily be made multi-region by hacking via the remote. You might have a multi-region DVD Player at home already and don't realize it. The big guys like Toshiba and Sony use hard-wired region coding in their computer chips but the cheap guys usually just use codes keyed into "secret" menus to change the region so they can make one model and sell it everywhere. Go to VideoHelp.com and look up your player(s) to see what you can do.

Do yourself a favor and hack your player or buy a cheap player that can easily be hacked for multi-region..... I know you like "Army of Darkness"... you really need to get the R3 MGM release... it is the best there is

Not as far as I'm concerned. Here in Australia we are Region 4 and proudly PAL.

And I have to agree with Laserman, the Australian release is no where near as dark or whore lookin as what the pics of Region 1 seem. If I get time I'll post some screen caps.

LOL

I just pray I can one day meet some loser in real life, and have them say it to me, so I can punch 'em right in the head over and over again. Damn that will feel so good.

It's coz of losers like that over at SW.com and other places around the workd, that allows shit being changed acceptable as far as LucasFilm is concerned. Where's Leonard Maltin when u need him. I'd love to hear what he has to say about this. He's one strict mofo when it comes to preserving motion pictures.

Problems with 2004 ANH disc?
Time
This is only in regards to the Tarkin speech scene.

I was watching my TR47 rip of a ANH with my surround sound system and my PC, and realised that the audio also goes from dodgy to better in regards to quality. So in this case at least it seems this audio issue may have been there before or at least since the 93 LDs. Can't speak for the 97 SE editions, but it is my opinion that even then the quality of the better audio clips wasn't ever good enough until now to notice the difference. Maybe not.

In regards to the other audio glitches that's plain and simply Lucasfilm fuck ups, or so to speak.

RATLSNAKE

btw, for those who disagreed with my earlier comments in regards to the Lowry digital cleanup process, they did not have access to the original negatives, but rather negatives made by ILM after they cleaned them up themselves first, and made the color corrections, then transferred back to film and gave it to Lowry. he then made the comment that some scenes in ANH were so bad that their algorithm thought the dust and dirt was actually part of the picture. lol This is taken straight from My Lowry himself in a recent interview I read online the other day. I can't remember which site but it was one of the major American news websites.

As far as I am aware there is no torrents for the TR-47 set, only the anamorphics.

Wish there was though.

For the Supplemental DVD torrent go to www.torrentbox.com I think they still have it.

Not sure as to why I was quoted as saying that this late in September, as that was said well before Rikter created torrents of the TR47 set.

Star Wars DVD Music Mix Botched!!
Time
Got my boxset and I can full concur that the findings are true, and this is very embarrassing on behalf of Lucasfilm and Fox, to allow such a thing to occur with literally the most anticipated DVD release.

To make it brief for the uninitiated, it appears that during the sound reconstruction stage which they said they were doing with at least EP IV, I would say that some of the sounds of that Tarkin scene must have been either destroyed or too far gone, or they just plain forogot to replace the entire former soundtrack, with the the new one they rebuilt from the original sounds and ADR. It is easy to pick it out by noticing the change in audio quality when the camera shot changes from close up behind Tarkin to head/shoulders side shot of Tarkin and Leia. Really, really stands out.

Proof OOT has been restored? + DVD quality Pre-ANH footage!
Time
Got my boxset today, and noticed instantly that during the Empire of Dreams doco we see considerably cleaned up footage, and yet unaltered of the original trilogy. And yes at times we see the new fx shot versions, but the main point I want to make is:

Footage of the original 20th century fox logo, LUCASFILM logo, and Star Wars crawl is shown, where the Episode IV and a New Hope Text is missing.

I figured this would be perfect to be incorporated into Magnoliafan's Pre-ANH that he said he would be putting together, as I believe originally he was going to use a VHS source of some age.

Sorry if I've waffled on, or stated the obvious, but it was just nice to see.

Furthermore while alot of 97 and 2004 edition shots are shown during the doco, and the other featurettes, there is a substantial amount of footage that is clearly OOT stuff, and it seems to be as clean as the 2004 DVD shots. So if this enough to think that yes Lowry have restored the original cuts too.

Star Wars DVD Music Mix Botched!!
Time
LOL look at Lucasfilm's reply:

Quote

"We are always impressed with how closely fans listen to the many different sound mixes we have made for the Star Wars movies over the years. It is flattering to know that, indeed, the audience is listening. Consequently, each mix comes out differently and any changes that you hear on the all-new Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround EX tracks on the Star Wars Trilogy DVD set are deliberate creative decisions. We can confirm that there are no technical glitches as reported."

Some screen caps would be awesome, preferrably the more well lit, close up scenes of the human actors, to see what sort of color tones etc have been achieved.

Like Luke and Ben on Tatooine near the destroyed Sandcrawler, Han, Leia, Tarkin screens etc, and anything else you think looks real awesome enough to post.

The 2004 DVDs will be Limited Edition! No more to be produced after Dec 2004!
Time
Yep, you heard it right. Just like the original trilogy VHS were not made after a certain date so will the 2004 DVDs that will be out in a few weeks.

I first came across this when I was thinking of placing an order with these people, who I normally get alot of my DVDs from.

http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item.zml/226943

Note the red italic writing: "Please Note - This is a limited release and will be discontinued by Fox before Christmas! Pre-order now to secure your copy!"

So I contacted EzyDVD, and they said they weren't told the reason, but gave me 20th Century Fox distribution number for Australia.

I called them, and the girl from Sales told me that legally LucasFilm has 100% rights and control of the Star Wars movies and simply uses Fox as their distributor. Duh, we all knew that. She says they received word from their Head Office informing them that LucasFilm is only going to produce a set amount of this boxset for the entire world, and legally they can do it, and Fox have no say in the matter, even though they'd like to make as many copies possible, as they know this will be one of their biggest sellers.

Now as a DVD and Star Wars fan, I know this can mean mostly one thing. George/LucasFilm is gonna release a 6 Disc Set, possibly towards the end of next year after ROTS has had its run at the cinemas etc.

For all those interested, who may be skeptical please by all means contact your local Fox Movies distributor and ask.

P.S. Can LucasFilm get any more gay? lol

Probably not, as the fame he got for doing Star Wars overwhelmed him in his twilight years and he hated that after all those infamous old war movies he had done, plus other more serious acts were just being dismissed, and that he'd always be remembered as only Obi-Wan. I was always saddened that he felt like that, but I spose I don't blame him, being a classic British actor of the old days of movie making, to be almost literally stalked by mass media, and uber geeks till his death. lol

P.S. This new sound change they've made is up there with Greedo shooting first on my list of things to dread!

That's what the TR47 set is all about isn't it? lol

But seriously I agree that that creating a 5.1 track from a source that is definitely not 5.1 will never be worth the effort, and I speak from experience. I have found TR47s PCM track incorporated with Pro Logic of my sound system that "forces" it to a 5.1 experience is more than adeqaute and sounds bloody fantastic, but like Laserman said if someone really wants to make a 5.1, by all means.

In regards to using either video or audio from the upcoming releases, as a purist I have to say I don't like the idea.

Based on the reason that the picture and the sound we will be seeing and hearing from this DVD set will beat the shit out of what was seen in the cinemas around the world, as a great majority of the audo is being re-produced from original sounds, and the picture as we know has gone through the Lowrey process which leaves nothing but a few specs of film dust if you're lucky, and probably not even that. lol

Using just the LDs is a way of maintaining the moies as we originally saw them, and in some cases the LD are better than how many people saw the movies. When I was younger and the movies were aired on TV they were aired in Pan & Scan, and the colours were awful.

If anything, to some up this longer than I expected post, by using the less than perfect LD sources, when I watch both the anamorphic and TR47 versions and see the dust specs, and see the slight lack of sharpness etc at times, I'm reminded I am watching the Star Wars films as they were originally made, where this is not sign of 1990s and onwards "digital" technology.

Cheers
