Well if you read the article you'd see the quote, but here it is anyway. However, one could read this sentence from the point of view that they got approval from LF to expand on copyright ideas, instead of their storyline being LF approved. The guys at Slashdot took it as the latter.

“We’ve taken (Lucasfilm-approved) storylines and expanded them, to fill in the gaps between Episode III Revenge Of The Sith, and the original,” Twitchell said. “It’s for the fans.”

I'd like to think it will be of the same calibre of IMPS, in regards to cinematography, so that it doesnt look like it was filmed in someone's basement, like most home job fan films.

As I agree the acting will obviously not surpass the OT as it is an indie movie, I just hope the script and dialogue is OT like, so that GL feels that cold feeling in his stomch of "damn it, this cheap indie movie blows the entire PT out of the water"

For those who haven't heard of this yet, I came across it on slashdot

http://edmsun.canoe.ca/News/Edmonton/2006/07/28/1708135.html

We gotta get his guy to become a member here. He seems to think alot like the rest of us, and is going to kill himself, non-profit like of course, so that we can see the character development that the PT failed to provide.
Anyone else excited. I'm excited to see where this guy will go with this.

STAR WARS: The Torrents thread

I don't wanna start a "please seed" craze, but I've been trying to download "The Ultimate Supplemental Collection - OT Episode VI - By RowMan" from MySpleen since forever.

If anyone can seed this soon I'll be happy to continue seeding.

I haven't been game to try get the first two Rowman discs, because last I tried I didn't connect to any peers, let alone seeders for days.

Thanks in advance.

Hmmm, I reposted that one during the first week of May, IIRC, for The_Blond_Babe who posts many cool vids in a.b.beatles, such as the Let It Be film which has never been issued on DVD, preserved from LD.

RATLSNAKE, I owe you one (for Dr_Gonzo's Supplemental Material from torrentbox).
I'll be happy to re-repost it, but proper 'netiquette suggests we should wait until it expires from Giganews who claim 70 day retention.
It's still on my hard drive, but let's wait a couple weeks longer and then I'll repost....

THX to ADigitalMan and segaflip for the original post. segaflip, I hope your new PC is coming together soon

Thanks Darth.

Can you PM me via the forum once you've re-posted it?

Cheers.

EDIT: You know what, I'm gonna get off my ass, and learn to make use of Usenet from my ISP. Before anyone says ISP usenet sucks, mine just relaunched their's and initial impressions tell me it is indeed premium.

Info Wanted: 1992 boxset release - Is this widescreen?
Time
I was thinking this boxset may be this one that davisdvd.com mentioned:

Release Format: VHS

Release Date: 1992

Studio: CBS/FOX

Technical Comments: 2.35:1 letterboxed transfer with HiFi Stereo Surround sound

Comments: VHS re-release #7

Other Comments: This "Special Collector's Edition" tape features a newly-transferred and corrected letterbox transfer, completely doing away with the "incredible shrinking ratio" that plagues the 1989 laserdisc. Available separately or in a navy blue box set that includes "From SW to Jedi" tape, book, certificate and a hologram of 1977 artwork on the box

Info Wanted: 1992 boxset release - Is this widescreen?
Time

Hey guys,

Someone has offered to sell me the following pictured box set, but I haven’t been able to confirm whether it is a letterbox widescreen release or not?

I went to davisdvd.com but haven’t been able to match this set up to any particular release specifically.
The set is a PAL release, which would have been sold in Australia, and possibly in other PAL nations, and I’m told it’s from 1992.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers,

Nearly all of Leone's theatrical cuts, were cuts done by United Artists, in the sense they would always get final word on him. Such as cutting any references to the Eastwood character to allow a "man with no name" campaign throught the movies he made.

For example The Good, Bad, and the Ugly Special Edition DVD, is the full uncut movie which premiered in Italy, never seen outside of Italy. After that premiere, UA cut it up and changed it before releasing it worldwide.
Only in this SE DVD have MGM gone back and obtained the Italian release cut, and then re-recorded the actors voices, or used voice impersonators for the actors no longer with us, to make an english version of the true theatrical cut available. English dialogue never existed for these scenes, as they were cut from the movie before an English language track was recorded.

Once Upon a time in America, was also cut back against Leone's wishes and control, as James Coburn laments on the interview included in that release.

The difference with George Lucas is that he got the cuts he wanted with the film that was shot. What he never got, was all the shots filmed that he wanted to be able to do, due to the technology and/or budget of that time, which is different to a director's cut that restores what they wanted to show, that the studio prevented them from doing. The SW SE's should be known as "Director still tinkering with movie after 20-30 years" edition.

Original Trilogy DVD FAQ (Unofficial)
Time
Hot off the press from HTF.

The LF publicity department has begun sending out the following response to the hundreds of irate emails they’ve been receiving on the Star Wars issue:

Quote:
I wanted you to know how much we appreciate the passion and enthusiasm you have for Star Wars, and thank you for sharing your concerns about our upcoming DVD release.

The DVDs being released in September will contain two versions of Star Wars: Episodes IV, V and VI – the Special Editions (which represent George’s vision of the movies) and the first versions, which will be included as bonus material. We hoped that releasing those “original” movies on a bonus disc would be a way to have some additional fun with the debut of the movies as individual DVDs. We certainly did not want it to become a source of concern or frustration for any of our fans.

As you may know, an enormous amount of effort was put into digitally restoring the negatives for the Special Editions. In one scene alone, nearly 1 million pieces of dirt had to be removed, and the Special Editions were created through a frame-by-frame digital restoration. The negatives of the movies were permanently altered for the creation of the Special Editions, and existing prints of the first versions are in poor condition.

So many fans have requested the original movies, we wanted to find a way to bring them to you. But since these movies do not represent George's artistic vision, we could not put the extraordinary time and resources into this project as we did with the Special Editions. The 1993 Laserdisc masters represented the best source for providing the original versions as DVD bonus material. Although these are non-anamorphic versions, they do preserve the original widescreen composition of the movies.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans – now or in the future – to restore the earlier versions.

We hope you will understand our decision and, again, want to let you know how much we appreciate your interest and enthusiasm.

Sincerely,
Lynne Hale
publicity@lucasfilm.com

At this point I am going to light a candle for the O-OT, because perhaps until the day GL passes, and his kids/heirs decide to restore the original films and release them to put their families through college and the like, we will never see these movies as we should. I know they say "never believe them when they say never", but Lucasfilm's actions seem to suggest this is the case.

New DVDs NOT 16x9

Have a read of this shit. Don't know how accurate the quote is, but the last 2 paragraphs make me sick as a motion picture fan, not just a Star Wars fan.

http://www.theasc.com/magazine/starwars/articles/sped/uni/pg4.htm

Maybe we need to do what the SouthPark boys did in "Free Hat", the episode they stole the original film of Raiders from GL and SS so they wouldn't fuck with it. Where's Trey Parker and Matt Stone when we need them again.

Honestly, we need to take this to the media.

Major newspapers in USA, UK, Australia, and Europe. Like collect what evidence exists, and send it to them, as a "fans from all over the world unite in an up roar" type of story. "Defenders of historical art" etc etc

An email to some of the major tabloids might be enough to spark something off. Get the media involved and embarass Lucasfilm and Fox to the point they have to release an official statement, at which point the media will eat it up and be on our side. But it would have to be done cleverly and professionally.

To try get slightly back on topic here, check this out.

http://www.lucasfilm.com/press/news/news20060504.html

The above link contains this excerpt, which I haven't seen before in other online reports:

"On Dec. 31, the original movies will be returned to the Lucasfilm Archives."

Is it just me, but why in the world would a company take the effort to mention this, unless their intent was ONLY purely aimed at using scare tactics to persuade people to "buy, buy, buy".

As an employee of a global billion dollar company, I can say I've seen some pretty evil marketting campaigns by Sales staff, but Lucasfilm is taking first prize with this one.

Call me crazy, but I kinda thought the whole point of the petition was to demonstrate the market for the theatrical cuts.

There's no way I'm giving Lucas more money as a demonstration of my undying loyalty to Star Wars. Seriously, if this news turns out to be true, fuck him.

Excuse me while I go watch Return of the King.

I totally agree Jay.

In fact change the home page of OT.com back to how it was with an added caption "Mr. Lucas...we'll inform you when you have REALLY released the original 3 Star Wars Theatrical releases on DVD! Try again buddy." - OT.com members

Should there be an ULTIMATE EDITION!
Time
Sorry guys, I didn't explain myself well.

I also use the term mum/mom. What I was trying to convey was that the manner in which it was said felt a little too comical and "feel good". The young Anakin is a slave child who knows nothing of the real world, and is completely oppressed. Now I realise it could be argued that he's too young to know any different, but the first movie proved that even as a young boy Anakin's Jedi powers have him smarter than most beings on the planet 3 times his age. Just a thought. It wasn't meant to be offensive to any memebers.

I usually accept people's opinions and move on, but as an overall motion picture fan I say this.

Sequels and/or prequels if made, should be made to fit into the original story that has been established. NOT re-release an original with changes to have it fit in with the new stuff, that's just plain lazy and the easy way out which then shows up on screen it was the easy way out. If the original SW trilogy failed miserably, I could maybe understand George going back and re-making it, because it wasn't how he wanted it and felt it could have really been something. This still isn't an excuse to destroy your former work though.

Anyways, George could have done great things with the PT, but unfortunately I believe years away from cinema, as well as deciding to direct the movie himself, were just some of the lead points as to why the PT failed, not to mention awful dialogue in the script, as well as bad performances by the actors.

Ewan was great as Obi-wan for the most part and really convincing, but Hayden needed coaching and was instructed to come across as a moany child, as did Natalie for some scenes that didn't warrant it, guaranteeing their cold, cardboard-cut-out like performances, however I feel she was great in V for Vendetta and other movies she has done. The worst decision besides a character like Jar-jar, had to be the extreme Americanisation of Anakin, not to mention making him much too young in EP I. Yelling out "Mommmm" makes me feel like I'm watching a children's Christmas movie, which correct me if i'm wrong, but wasn't Jake Lloyd in one with big Governor Arnie??? I'd be interested to hear what my American friends think of that, because being from Australia, I react to the saying of "Mom" as very 80s and 90s sitcom like.
