Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

Star Wars is officially up shit creek without a paddle.

Will stick with my GOUT dvds (still haven't bothered going blu ray at Cracker Towers, although an O-OT release woulda swung it!)

So long George. It's been.........................really infuriating.

Going to have to.  From reading his daughter's tweets (don't know how old she is now) she is far from the heiress that Barabara Brocolli is (the 007 film empire).  She seems to be deluded like all the loser nerds out there.  I'm not saying she shouldn't defend her dad etc.  But she says some silly, naive things.

She's sitting there going on about how people should ignore the prequels if they hate them, that we have the choice NOT to watch them, and that we should just appreciate the originals etc.  What she fails to perceive is that we OOT lovers would gladly do that had her father not constantly changed the OT every few years.

So yeah, unless the rights to the Star Wars empire one day fall into the hands of say someone like Fox, we'll never see restored OOT.

Maybe they'll get the extras right in 2027, you know ...the 50th anniversary, when the movies will be in hologram format. lol

Oh, but we still won't get the OOT then, oh no, hell would need to freeze over for that. :P

On a serious note, you know why I'm anxious to VIEW this release?

1/ To see if they have the balls to admit they f*cked up hard in 2004 with the DVD release i.e. colours, sabres, music, etc and have fixed that crap
(I STILL cannot believe they missed the green sabre during the Falcon chess game scene, doesn't LucasFilm employ Star Wars geeks and fanboys? Their docos suggest they do, although they are all yes men)

2/ To see if George is even sadder than last time and alters the films again.

My money is on the second one at the very least.

Whenever someone gives me the Lucas orginal vision BS, I always cite this example:

1980 ESB Version (Theater):  Luke does not scream when he falls in Cloud City.

1997 ESB Version (Special Edition):  Luke DOES scream when he falls in Cloud City.

2004 ESB Version (DVD):  Luke does not scream when he falls in Cloud City.

This is called TAMPERING, and not having any vision at all!

Totally agree.  There are more examples of this, but THIS is enough to show it's just drunken rolling of the dice with every new release.

I wonder what we'll get with the Blu-rays? 2004 version with Coca Cola ads plastered as bumper stickers on Star Destroyers? lol

But then I am looking forward to the 3D release.

As am I to an extent, as it will be interesting to see how well they can retrofit 3D immersion, seeing as I agree with Cameron's comments about "knowing and remembering" the distance between objects etc does have an effect on your finished product and can determine between a dodgy result and a great result.

However doesn't it concern you George will take it a step further, in the sense that by 2020 these 3D releases of all six films will be George's new preferred versions in place of the current 1997 SE and DVD edition hybrid?

Thankfully Aliens and T2 were made when they were.  If made today they'd almost certainly suck.  More focus would go to effects and 3D and less to storyline and emotion.

A lot of people would tell you that that is already the case with those two movies.
Really?  What's wrong with those people?

*suspicious look at OO5*
I'm just saying that there are some here who don't appreciate sequels to those movies.

Wow, really?

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but honestly when someone tells me all sequels suck I always give the examples of Godfather II, T2, and Aliens as being proof you can do a sequel very well.  Hell, let's not forget about Empire Strikes Back, but of course we all knew that, and arguably Lucas didn't "make" that one. :P

I'll admit that Aliens could be questionable in the sense that Alien was a horror/thriller movie and thats Aliens was a war movie, but I think it still stands.

Oh as a side note, to those that may never have heard it but 'The Godfather Part II' was the first MPAA movie to use the 'Part x' in its title.  Just a little bit of trivia.

Lucas: Look, I’m bringing out Star Wars for the third time. Newsweek asked: “does he have no shame?”

Well we’re into the third generation that are under 12 who haven’t seen Star Wars. And I’m betting that people who have seen it many times will still join this new generation to see it again if it’s in a social experience.

Here's an idea George....why don't you show this 3rd generation of 12 year olds the prints you made in 1977, 1980 and 1983?

Why didn't you show those same prints to the previous generation of 12 year olds?

Would've cost you less money too. IMO Cameron is the next George.  There's a time and a place for shooting digital and/or 3D, doesn't mean it's great for everything.  Thankfully Aliens and T2 were made when they were.  If made today they'd almost certainly suck.  More focus would go to effects and 3D and less to storyline and emotion.

The decision to re-do the FX in 1993 was not his idea. It was Dennis Muren who pressed it on him. Lucas just wanted to add the Jabba scene, an addition which he attempted to do for the 1981 modification which had the new crawl. He might have wanted to also add a few BG elements to Mos Eisley, but this is not totally clear. So, he never had the idea of doing large-scale FX changes until Dennis Muren and then other ILM staff started suggesting it. He then surmised it would be good R&D for the prequels, and so he started thinking up changes that would have relevant research qualities (i.e. crowd replication, BG replacement, CG close to camera).

It was a slippery slope and once he started he realized how much he liked it. But he was really just interested in sprucing up Mos Eisley and adding the deleted Jabba scene. If it was 1981 and he could have done whatever he wanted, evidence suggests this is all he would have done. I prefer the non-Jabba edit, just as I prefer the original crawl, but I would have let him get away with it for consistency/relevance the same as the 1981 crawl; not a big deal. I think most people would feel similar.

To be fair to Muren from what I read at the time and in the years since, he saw it as exciting and something worth pushing because in his eyes they were working on a "Special Edition".  Something fun and different for the times, but an edition nonetheless.  In his eyes the original releases would always be the "real" movies.

I don't think he ever thought George would make a decision to refer to this "special edition" as "the" edition moving forwards, thereby trying to erase the past.

I bet the ANH audio will still be messed up? How is ANH's audio on Spike TV?

I think this will be fixed. IIRC, Matthew Wood spoke about it on one of the ForceCast.

I haven't been here for a while, but I'll say this much...I saw the blu-ray trailer on YouTube and the colors of the lightsabers that cross the Emperor's face in Jedi are still DVD-esque. i.e. They don't have the white-light center.

Assuming the footage in the trailer is from the blu-ray footage than it's nice to see we have another botched release.  Damn you LucasFilm.

Info Wanted: GOUT - Anyone done an anamorphic version? aka which version to get?
Time

Moth3r said:

We need to update the screenshots thread with these new versions - yes I know I've been saying this for ages now. In the meantime, there are a small number of shots comparing the GOUT with the Pwnage Edition here

The rapidshare link to its cover is dead. :(

I got this release and although I think the colours are much improved, I felt it was really over grainy, especially in comparison to dark_jedi's release (although I'm aware at times this release removed too much grain), and I'm a person who prefers grain in older films.

Still they're all better than what Lucasfilm has released so far.

Any plans to do Empire and Jedi in a pwnage edition?

3D will not work until I don't have to wear glasses. I'm sorry, but sometimes I'd just rather watch films in 2D. And they are ALREADY finding another way to grab money from us after just releasing Blu-Ray? I thought 2D Blu-Ray had at least another decade on it. This is also another way to separate big blockbusters from lower budget films and make sure no one ever sees them...

Well said. The truth is 3D will likely become a trend all studios feel must be copied in their 2010 and 2011 releases.  If it fits, i.e. Avatar, pixar movies, tim burton movies etc then great.

But if serious dramas films (oscar contenders) start doing this because it's the new cool thing I'll feel seriously ill.  Cameron said Avatar would get people back into the cinema, and it did because word of mouth suggested "you gotta see this 3d, it's amazing" and it was, but because the environment looked great and made the experience more enjoyable. Vibrant colors details etc, so you felt immersed.  Did it help the story? No way.  Is it actually a good story? Kinda, but not great.  There are plot holes that many critics have raised, and for good reason as they do exist, but the movie is about experience and enjoyment, and so they don't pan it.  Which is fine and rightly so.

I just hope everything doesn't get the 3d treatment, coz this will get real boring.

I posted this review at SW Message Boards and one guy said he turned it off after the second "F" word, and another just refused to watch it.

I hate deluded, fan-boy people like this.  If you appreciate film you need to be objective, and the reality is the prequels ARE that bad.  I'm guessing these people must be kids, or sad adults.  Many of us said ROTS redeemed them a bit, but looking back no it didn't.  It's just the best of the worst, giving the illusion that it was ok.

The truth is, which we all know, George has been a very lucky man, in the sense when he gained success it was thanks to many other great people around him.  The Raiders films are largely thanks to Larry Kasdan and Steve Spielberg.  Fact is there is enough anecdotal evidence that had he the opportunity to make the OT in the manner he did the PT, they would have sucked like the PT.

When he's actually covering what's wrong with TPM it's really good.  Although I found myself chuckling at times, in a Family Guy/South Park manner, this would be a much better review, and serious video to boot, if he'd left out his "black comedy".

Star Wars OT & 1997 Special Edition - Various Projects Info (Released)
Time

After being away from home, it's good to be back and see some of the cool things I've missed on this board.

I just got dark_jedi's Star Wars and although there are moments that resemble a blu-ray that has had DNR slapped on it (i.e. Patton), the script that he's applied from g-force has turned the GOUT into what is clearly the best representation of the OUT we have, now that it seems the X0 will not see the light of day.  I'm still not 100% what happened there.  Superb stabilization, and thankfully the grain is somewhat more controlled.

Anyways, two questions:

1/ Am I correct in understanding that very soon (i.e. this month or so) dark_jedi is uploading a v2 of these discs, and so I should probably not get TESB and ROTJ until then?

2/ As the SW I got is NTSC I have to ask, is there a PAL version, or do these only exist in NTSC?

Cheers.

It is so refreshing to see someone who was involved in both the original films, and the new films, to come back to the “light side” and acknowledge that George gave in to “bright shiny things” over a good story.

That comment by George has been raised before, and I believe it is 100% true. However he has then go on to say that the same restored negative was permanently altered, as in pulled apart and redited with the 97 effects film elements to create a 'new' original negative. Same sort of deal as what FFC did when he went back and recut Apocalypse Now to do the Redux release.

Man do i so wanna kick the living crap out of the debate host and the tool from the theforce.net

Honestly Bill Hunt was the only who knew what he talking about, not that it is a hard topic, and was trying to have a serious and civilised conversation, and the other two jerk-offs were just making comments you'd expect from either an 8 year old, or a politician avoiding a direct question.

I am disgusted.
