I picture this guy as being the character in those 70 and 80s American high school comedy films where he's the annoying dween in the class that gets bashed by all, but no one feels sorry for him, because well...he just really deserves it for being a parasite of society.

This Rinzler article is ridiculous.  Why didn't he post this information during the writing of Making of Star Wars or ESB?  Oh yeah because he was in on the lie to the fans that ep. 7-9 never existed.

Exactly, but hey, Lucasfilm was paying him to do so, so the poor bastard had no choice but to play ball right?

This announcement reminds me of the first time I saw this scary vision:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ky1lSkkeRxk

Ah, Rick McCallum, the biggest "yes man" around.

And here I thought I wouldn't have any more "oh no" moments concerning a film that has been stretched so thin to make an extra buck, even Riggs and Murtaugh would struggle with it.

The problem is this, people will be split into two, the one side being "what's wrong with you fan boys, give it a chance" etc.

Well to those pragmatists I say this, what ever happened to having a new original idea? Walt Disney may have started his career creating a few characters for repeat cartoon shorts, but the man spent a career re-telling classic tales (not expanding on them) and other original works.

Today Disney is like any other corporation who instead of innovating, just acquires old things and then milks them. Forgive me, it's the 2000s, we all live in a world in making a cheap buck. <lines up to direct the 34th reboot of Star Wars>

George has been absolutely lying for 10 plus years to us.

Here.

What balls! For all the evidence that we knew those pages existed, he and Lucasfilm tried to brand us as crazy Star Wars geeks or fan-boys, and now look.

I know we should be "pleased" that we're right, and always knew so, but I actually feel more angered by this admission of what we knew to be true.

I guess it was.... inevitable. Fingers crossed that Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher show up.

I think it's safe to say this will not happen for the most obvious of reasons.

This is terrible for Star Wars fans, and I mean the original film not a saga or a franchise. What was once a magical film is going to be continually dragged through more mud to just to make a lot of bucks in even more merchandise, theme parks, spin-offs and who knows what else.

Selfishly yes one hopes the OUT theatrical cuts might eventually get a release (Lucas will still be an employee as an advisor I have read), but it means when I have kids they will grow up with a Star Wars that is just a franchise giant of crap, as opposed to a beautiful movie, and no matter how hard one tries their view of it will be tainted.  Terrible day in the history of cinema, in my opinion.

thanks. pretty new to torrent stuff. i will try and figure out this ports business. On a home machine. I guess it could be affected by antivurus as well?

cheers

Anti-virus has nothing to do with networking, i.e. ports or apps being blocked from Internet access etc. It is purely filesystem scanning.

However, if you're using a security suite of sorts, then the firewall portion could likely be an issue.

Don't mix anti-virus with firewalls, two very different things.

I wouldn't be too surprised to hear something officially good soon (even if it's just nuGOUT:HD).

Doubt it. At this point Lucasfilm and ALL its lawyers should be simply focused on the bootlegging of their officia albeit crappy releases, as that is where the majority of modern and average fans are looking.

We, those who love cinema for what it is, are a very small minority. Hardly worth them even worrying about. After all, we've all bought these movies a thousands times across various mediums.

Those shots of R2 with navy blue trim, as opposed to that bright royal blue as well as the lightsaber shots of Ben and Vader....they are exactly as I remember that movie. 1970s-like!

After so many years of being here, and so many attempts to achieve what Harmy is doing, I'm STILL puzzled by WTF Lucasfilm has been thinking everytime they re-release these movies worse than the last.
Let's be honest George isn't the only muppet working there.

Eagerly awaiting the 2.1 release. Should be amazing!

...So there I was, in my local HMV shop and they had the blu ray of ESB playing on the wall television.

The assistant comes over and asks if he can help me. I say no, I'm just watching the film for a moment as I am a huge Star Wars fan. "In that case" he says "These blu rays are for you....yadda, yadda..."

I say that actually, I am not a fan of these particular versions but a fan of the original versions.

"Wha.."?

The original versions of the original trilogy before George altered them, says I.

"Wha ? You mean you want to see them with cardboard lightsabers and no effects"?

No,says me.The original theatrical versions of the films that were released in the 70s and 80s.

............"?"

Then I had to walk away. WTF ??

You should have said to them: "Even THIS job is above your level of skill.  sit down before you hurt yourself"

I do remember, or perhaps misremember, that when the theatrical version of E.T. was announced to be the one on the Blu-Ray disc, Spielbergentioked how he felt he was done with altering his own films and would look to the future instead of the past. I think he said that he felt that he saw his priorities in this situation as being different from those of Lucas.

This is true.  I can't recall it exactly, but you would find it here somewhere on the site.  The quote appeared in some film site sites and media too.

Not quite harsh enough, but you can see Steven doesn't agree. Hell, Indi 4 would've been even more whacked out if George was the sole owner of that property.

I was going through the extras of Gangs of New York, and apparently George Lucas came and visited the set. He kept complaining about why they were building actual sets or something, and he said it should've all been done digitally. Mr Scorsese ignored him.

Nothing would please me more than a public statement by his "pals". Marty, Francis, De Palma, etc.

Like off the cuff comments, not intending to be harsh, in an interview about something semi-related, where they just blurt out "...his (Lucas) obsession with digital technology is a little one sided, it's a tool but a tool to use sparingly. He should've released his original movies by now in hi-def, I'm still waiting myself!"

One can dream right? lol I wonder what's the chance Marty said in his mind: "Yeah ok, fuck off now Georgie".

Does anyone here still like Star Wars?
Time

Call it pedantic, but if someone asks "Do I like Star Wars?" I respond, yes I like the movie of that name released in the 70s.

At that stage people catch on, that I am not answering the question as if they asked me about the franchise it then became. If they don't catch on I make it clear I'm talking about just a single movie.  It's my way of sticking to the facts, not what the media, Lucas, and the general populace have "shaped" Star Wars to represent. Why is this important? Because I don't want people to mistake my answer for meaning anything other than I intended.

I also love "The Empire Strikes Back" and while not as strong I always liked "Return of the Jedi" purely because I enjoyed seeing Luke come into his own and the longer, improved space battles.

Bar that I liked the original Expanded Universe novels from the early to mid-90s, there is nothing else I can really say.

I think a large part of this has to do with the fact that George Lucas isn't a regular, integrated part of society. The world he lives in is not the same as yours and mine. He can't go check out a movie theatre saturday night, or take the subway downtown. He can't just go with a friend to a comedy club, or take a walk around the neighbourhood when he is feeling restless. He can't go window shop on sunday afternoon with his girlfriend, or take his kids to the local baseball game. He's not going to have a conversation with the guy standing next to him in line at the bank, because he doesn't line up at the bank in the first place, and he can't walk into a comic book shop and see what's out this week.

These are all things normal people do, and things that people here do. Mostly, Lucas doesn't go out at all, and when he does it's usually just for work purposes.

Think about that. Think about what that does to a person, and how it affects the way they see the world and how they understand their own culture.

But, in fact, George Lucas the person is hardly a part of 21st century American culture (or any culture, really). He has a sense of it, and memories from the 70s when he could be a free member within it, but he doesn't experience or understand it the way normal people do. It simply isn't possible.

I think that's a big reason why a lot of his views in the last decade or two have become increasingly warped. He's not a lunatic--he just doesn't have a clue. In a way, it's not really his fault, it's simply what happened, and he tried to resist for so long, to his credit--he tried to be ordinary, to not let the fame and fortune change him.

Normally I would agree, yet for all the other cashed up people in show biz that have forgotten or never knew a "normal life", he grew up as a kid in Modesto to everyday parents.  Yet there are plenty of others in showbiz who have kept a cool head.

While not the greatest example, the immediate one that comes to mind is the late Paul Newman, for all the wealth, he remained a straight shooting bloke, and would happily talk to anyone, and did what he could for charity till the day he died.

By the way, I loved reading your "secret history of star wars" book.

LOL

This is classic.  Had it not been from a legit source, I would've said that's a fake article, because no adult would make such invalid, deluded statements.

The largest of those, the reference to Blade Runner.  Georgie boy, guess what, there have been many cuts of Blade Runner. But unlike your deluded self, Sir Ridley Scott was good enough to offer up 5 cuts to us, and RESTORED, which we happily bought.

George, you're an insecure brat, stuck in adults body.  I really feel sorry for you, despite your fortune which I'm sure you try to keep yourself happy with.

It's Official: George Lucas hates his fans :P
Time

On the Internet, all those same guys that are complaining I made a change are completely changing the movie,” Lucas says, referring to fans who, like the dreaded studios, have done their own forcible re-edits. “I’m saying: ‘Fine. But my movie, with my name on it, that says I did it, needs to be the way I want it.

LMFAO!!

My answer to George on this point would be:

"100% agree George.  You DID have the right to do this, however on three occasions in 1977, 1980, and 1983, prior to each film being designated as 'in the can' ready for duplication and presentation throughout the world.
After these periods of time have passed, is NOT when you have that right, especially when you're trying to change history and erase the past. Alternatre cut yes by all means, but not 'my new new new cut' etc. whenever you feel like it"

and a second joke about starting to watch the movie before George changes it again.   and a third joke that their conversation is better then the blu-ray.

Now I have 3 reasons to like this show:

- Penny

- The techy references

- These quotes bagging the BD release

I don't know, I just watched it the other day and while I liked some parts, I have a feeling that it doesn't help our cause at all, because I think that to an outsider, it really makes us look like whiny fanboys.

Because instead of showing someone calmly stating what the problem is and why we're so upset about it, it shows a bunch of nerds ranting very loudly about Han shooting first.

Totally agree. Overall I thought it sucked, and looked like so many campy docos out there, you see on late night TV on topics few people care about.

There was about 10 mins of footage all up I thought was quite good.  I realise a lot of the approach was so that it would be entertaining and not boring, but sadly in the end it makes the entire idea of what we're trying to say a complete joke, and not a serious discussion point.
