I HAVE, AS EXPECTED, BESTED LUKE SKYWALKER IN A LIGHTSABER DUEL AND, RATHER THAN SURRENDER TO ME, SKYWALKER PLUNGED TO HIS APPARENT DEATH; HOWEVER, MY COMMAND OF THE FORCE HAS PRESERVED SKYWALKER FOR NOW -

and....

It's like finally getting to see the Wampa monster feeding while Luke struggled to free himself. Why was Luke hanging there before? Now we know!

Stop, Stop!  you're killing me!  Dang, you hit the nail on the head.

I won't lose any sleep over someone like you. This is the same hollow update/ promises that -1 did before....you know right before he screwed all of us by deleting all his posts and starting his own board? You people are so gullible.

I'm curious, how did -1 "screw" you?  Did you send him money or something?  I thought -1 was the one that shelled out the money.

So... are people sending him videos?  Of what exactly?

I sent him a video expressing my views.  Among other things, I addressed people who say "get over it, it's just a movie".  My analogy was that's like saying that Woodstock was just a concert.  Imagine if the producer of the Woodstock movie went in and "fixed" the wrong notes, took out all the drugs, CGI'd the Beatles in, and then didn't make the original movie available. He'd probably have a thousand flower children camped out on his doorstep chanting that he'd raped their childhood.  For nerds like me, Star Wars was our Woodstock.

I have no idea if they liked it or not.  Guess I'll find out! :)

Yeah, Rescuing Star Wars will be really fun to see. I love the "preview" video about it.

Er, the YouTube video IS "Rescuing Star Wars".  It's not a preview, it's a low-res bit of satire.  I will probably put a higher-res version of the same thing as an extra in the next project, but "Rescuing Star Wars" is done (no special editions!).

The next project will be DVD quality telecines of ALL the movie viewer reels (including the one in Rescuing Star Wars).  So there will be lots more grunge, scratches, and film dirt to enjoy!  Not to mention the long-awaited missed grappling hook, etc.  :) :)

A quick question, I remember seeing a short youtube video I believe you did a while back involving the transfer of the old Star Wars movie viewer, you know the one where you held the viewer up to the light and cranked it by hand? It was like a spoof of sorts showing the "restoration efforts", with the actual film at the end. Do you have that available in better quality than youtube? That would make a great companion piece to this.

You can find that clip on YouTube by searching for "Rescuing Star Wars". I didn't include it in the Puggo Grande, because my next project will be a restoration of all of the movie viewer reels.  There was a brief thread about this here on the forum you could search for.  I'll be posting more details on this within the next month or so. For those of you who remember that thread -- I have finally decided on a name for it!

I also have almost completed a 16mm transfer of the special edition trailer, which will be one of the extras on that next project.  I know, nothing new there, but it looks kinda cool in 16mm.

so when are you going to put this up on linktalk, I want to download it, and since you didnt reply to my pm, I want to see this in real life.

I've sent out over 50 disks... still several PMs to respond to.  Anyone else wants a copy, please find someone to trade for it, or grab the rapidshare off of throwgncpr's links.  At this point I need a little break.  Thanks!

another faulty memory?
Time

I know we have many examples of faulty SW memory syndrome... Luke missing the first time with the grappler hook, for example (of which I am one of the many victims).

But I have an example from the 1997 SE that has been nagging at the back of my mind for several years, and I've finally built up the courage to ask here....

When the SE of Star Wars came out in the theater in 1997, I saw it on opening night. Somehow, I remember being surprised that the line "close the blast doors" was said by a calm woman's voice, as if it were an automated voice coming over an intercom. I also remember thinking that they must have added it that way, rather than restoring it from an original 1977 source.

I am now beginning to think that this is yet another example of faulty SW memory syndrome, because I haven't been able to find any example of the SE with anything other than the original voice that matches the original mono mix.

So, am I to presume that I am so afflicted yet again?

I have a technical question.  How would one take this dvd at home and add on say the 35mm stereo theatrical mix like the belbecus capture from the laserdisc ?

Would be possible to sync that to the video or would the reel changes make that impossible.

Ideally, you'd want to use the original .avi files of the video, and then use a video editor such as Vegas to synch them up by hand.  That would mean cutting, moving, stretching, and squeezing the audio scene-by-scene, using your eyes and ears until you had an audio file that matched the video.  Then you'd need to encode the new audio file to ac3 or whatever.  There would be no need to reencode the video.  Of course you'd need to reauthor the DVD too.  And if you wanted both audios on the same DVD, you'd need to make some room - I don't think they'd both fit right now.

Tedious, but it's exactly what I did to synch the mono mix from one set of reels until it matched reasonably well with the other set of reels.

The bigger question is, why would you want to do that?  The 35mm mix is missing "close the blast doors", right?  That's a deal-breaker, IMHO.  :)
