What shall I say? I utterly enjoyed this movie and couldn’t stop smiling.
But the story had some flaws that really annoy me. First of all I was disappointed that they ignored TLJ almost completely. The is seemingly no hope in the galaxy, although reestablishing hope was one of the main themes from TLJ. Poe is still struggling to be a leader. Rey is still obsessed with the past. The portrayal of the Jedi has shifted back to the picture we got from the prequels and Rose got sidelined for Jannah, who serves basically no purpose, although her character could have been a set up for a big stormtrooper mutiny, which would have suited Fin’s character well.
But these are merely details, what really bugged me the most was their reluctance to move beyond the almost tiring good vs. evil showdown. Luke’s sacrifice from TLJ had left me with hope that the Jedi may finally become true peacekeepers and actual pacifist and Rey had the opportunity to do so. It may sound cheesy, in fact it is a horrible idealistic approach, plaese don’t crucify me 😃
Instead of fighting the guards, when Palpatine wanted her to kill and replace him, she should have embraced him, her literal evil grandpa. Think about it, the dark side feeds of hate, how is fighting fire with fire supposed to help anything? Acknowledging the evil, disempowering it by recognition and locking the pitiable, hateful creature up in a forgotten temple in a system, literally no-one knew it existed, would have been a far more powerful climax then the one we got.
This would have been the actual Jedi way. Instead of killing the dark side, she should have healed it. (remember she has already healed two monsters in the very same movie)
