Star Wars DVD Covers
Time
Oh I don't think he's attacking him

Hot Rod, valid point. But I think he's going for as generic a cover as possible. A lot of his stuff contains nonsequitur information because he's maintaining ambiguity and allowing for them to be used for any set, any DVD, etc. The specific point of these covers though, is so it looks like you're carrying around a Star Wars lunch box, so that's why I think he left them alone.

It's also good with these creative esoteric sources to keep them pretty much blank so they can be altered or used by somebody else. Like Darth Solo's manga sets, completely blank, but allows for them to be made available for a number of uses.

Anyway...

It might be just these particular histograms. I'm working with GOUT histograms at the moment, and although Desree once said they're "not different enough" (maybe that's what he said, or maybe that they're just not the best source I can't remember) I'm getting better results from a less extreme approach. This could fix the problems the previous histos created. Also taking Ocp's advice, and reducing the effect by about 50% could mix and combine histogram colors and 2004 colors into an overall natural picture. Luke's saber there I didn't repaint, a color replace function at the core of the blade could get it looking bright again. That's how I got Vader's white core back again, but Luke's saber was such another issue.

I like the cover art too , though with no pleasant surprises at how the other two might look, it's at least nice and uniform if need be redundant.

Instructions on page 2. I wrote one for the histograms specifically, and Desree wrote one for vd_hue/histogram use. Both on the same page, Desree's comes a few posts before mine.

INv8r_ZIM, you're right about the video noise. My program has a denoiser, it looks terrible, loses a lot of detail. It didn't occur to me until now that avisynth has a denoiser. reddish-orange sabers? I must have moved the hue too far in some shots. I can bring it back and get a more pure and consistent red. About the desaturation, a little of it is histograms, a lot of it is the DVD itself. I know in a couple shots R2s dome was like neon blue, like when he's scanning for Luke and threepio comes and gets him. I had to kill a lot of the overall saturation there and in the end threepio went a little faded in those shots. Anyway, thank you.

How's everyone's download speed going? I'm giving as much upload speed as I can but I'm also downloading the HD broadcast of ANH (for no particular reason...). How're people's percentages going?

The DVDs really 7.37 gigs, I don't remember where I got the 8 gig number I reported earlier, maybe I was looking at my 'export folder' and there were some extra files in there or something. Anyway all the better.

So I guess I'm seeding it at demonoid. I gotta get jumping on Jedi so I'm leaving this the way it is, but I'm coming back to it after I get some feedback. It's not bad or anything, just some little things. Email or pm me for trade.

For feedback, go hogwild! I need to learn. If you have specific tips for me (adjust the hue here, up the saturation there...) then that would be a real help as well.

Yeah, lol. About three people besides film club people. But whatever, our advisor's kids were there and they liked it. I think not as many people came cause we didn't advertise on the morning announcements. Ah well, ROTJ might be shown during a two hour late start, so people who show up early will have nothing better to do than come and watch Star Wars!

Hm, I'm not sure. I've read about some lightsaber inconsistencies in closeup shots and stuff, but if it's something that's been there from the beginning, I don't think I will. Though I am thinking over a SW Tri-Edit, where I'd actually be "fanediting" more instead of "preserving," and might try to fix stuff like those inconsistencies. Post a screen, that's real interesting.

Darth Solo, you're the one who put together the manga covers? Yeah I've been waiting to print them out...alternate text....or something. Thank you so much for bringing them here!

bkev's right, the super-duper premiere is tomorrow. I've just watched the final DVD and I think it'll do. 8 gigs big...8 gigs of just video and audio. Is that excessive?

Even easier, just open the DVD straight off the optical drive ("open disc" button) in DVDshrink (like Boba Feta cryptically suggested, lol) and set the "in and out" points with the reauthor function.

It's exceedingly generous of you, but don't upload all of them, just upload which you think is the best. Thanks! Oh yeah, and PAL's fine. The 20th Century Fox logo earlier, and the Willow Lucasfilm logo were PAL too.

Interesting point, but I wouldn't know what to use as my reference. Using the GOUT, for example, would mean purposefully darkening it, desaturating it, things that could be the transfer and not necessarily the film lab print. Then again there was talk about differences in the outlines of the spotlights and such as well. Ahh who knows.

The logo posted earlier looks great anyway. Does anyone have any of these DVDs?

Oh, I thought it was after "if you only had reattached my legs...now remember Chewbacca, you have a responsibility so don't do anything foolish" I swear I hadn't heard the responsibility part before. Well anyway, one less re-encode I suppose.

I need yet another encode to work out a couple more flubs with extra frames. But I took a little time to work out the cover art.

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g40/DledRhapsody/ESB_privvy2.jpg

If anybody else has some amazing cover art they'd like to contribute...ahem...it could only mean more for the DVD-rom folder .

And I will supply a raw, but avisynth color corrected 2004 version for Mac users. But we'd do it through mail.

In terms of when I'll share it, I've postponed my deadline again. Still have to get these extra frames outta there. If I'm a member of Demonoid, can I upload a torrent on my own? Or do I need "uploader" status like myspleen?

How did you build your isolated score?

Like most things in this project, it's stolen. I snagged the first laserdisc transfer I ever downloaded, my old ISOMIX trilogy and ripped the isoscore from there, and just adjusted it on my timeline to make sure it synced up the entire film. It only goes out of sync in the last optical wipe...I don't know why, it's fine up until then.

In general about the matte fixes, I left them alone cause they didn't bother me too bad. Of course when the OUT is released by Lucasfilm properly they better be there, but for now I didn't feel like losing quality over it. The rancor I'll just leave alone too. There would be so many shots to change, for instance pretty much any cockpit shot on Hoth, due to the transparency issue. The only time I switched out a matte fix change was when the digital compositing altered the sync of ships slightly:

http://www.starwars.com/episode-v/release/video/f20060901/20060901_picview/img/25.jpg

Unfortunately the "complete" list of changes on the Star Wars website, though the most complete of all change lists, isn't entirely complete. They leave out a couple redundancies, for instance, the third or forth time R2s dome is fixed from black to blue. I think I got them all, but we'll see.

I need one more encode for everything. I missed 3PO's added line in the freezing chamber. Plus my editing program is dropping in an extra frame where it shouldn't every now and then, all easily fixable. This weekend I think I can upload it to Demonoid, then start jumping onto Jedi. Thanks for the support, it's just about done.

It's a little odd, given that both the SW and RotJ Classics are both over 6gb.

Basically, I'm suspecting that someone has UL'd a DVDShrunk derivative.

...or was ESB always DVD5-sized instead of DVD9?

ROTJ CE was the first to actually have a DVD9 version, then SW CE 2.0 was a DVD9. Ocp always said a DVD9 version of ESB "technically" existed, but I guess nobody ever got it from him.

1) write out your avisynth script. I think you're supposed to crop off the letterboxing for all your scripts before you plan to write something, that's what I do anyway, I think the black gets in the way of the pallet or whatever. Might be wrong. So something like "crop(0, something, 0, something)"
2) input "writehistogram("matrx_orig.txt", 100)"
3) input "writepolarhistogram("matrixpolar_orig.txt", 100)"
4) save, play in mediaplayer or whatever and sit and wait a few minutes, once the video actually starts that means it's done, and in the same folder as your avisynth file you should have two txt files of the colors for the Matrix that you want. The value 100 means you're taking every 100th frame as a sample for your pallet.
5) do the same thing for the footage you want to regrade, but rename "writehistogram("matrix_crumby.txt", 100)" and writepolarhistogram("matrixpolar_crumby.txt", 100)
6) Then, probably in a new avisynth file (a copy of the footage you want to change without the "writehistogram/polarhistogram" functions in it), you toss in these values.

polarcolourlike("matrixpolar_crumby.txt", "matrixpolar_orig.txt")
colourlike("matrix_crumby.txt", "matrix_orig.txt")

Well I guess you already knew the sixth step, ah just making sure. Oh yeah, then re-add the cropped letterboxing with addborders(0, someting, 0, something). I think the cropping then re-adding keeps any added brightness from interfering with the letterboxing. Anyway, this is it in it's most simplest form.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Quick question. The Emperor scene. Gout or digital broadcast of the '97 SE?

Nah it's all from the GOUT, which is fine for darker scenes like the Emperor scene, but doesn't work well for Hoth scenes, lots of noise. What kind of broadcast is this? Where can I get it?

I didn't think to adjust the hue of these shots to get Vader's saber back to red. I was playing with the red levels of the image for so long, lol. I'm just worried about what's happening to Luke's saber in some shots, ah well at least it's still blue.

Hal9000: Any chance you could release the raw, unaltered DVD version with color correction too? That would be great fodder for fan edits.

Well somebody beat me to reposting the original histograms for the avisynth colourlike function, but for those who don't use avisynth I guess it wouldn't be hard at all to accommodate. I wouldn't release it (maybe that falls under the category of not being a fan edit, moderators?), but I could supply it to those in need definitely.

Andy_k_250: That shot of the Falcon in Cloud City - when you say it is from laserdisc, do you mean it is from the 2006 OUT, or from actual laserdisc?

Oh yeah, I meant 2006 OUT, but in terms of terminology and in a community where laserdisc transfers are abound and when we know the difference between a real DVD and a shoddy third generation laserdisc transfer, I ended up calling it a laserdisc, lol.

Marvolo: PaulisDead2221, I was wondering what sharpen filters you used?

I used the ones that come with Premiere, I was real careful with them I think, just to help blend the footage with the surrounding shots a little better. Here's a comparison I put together real quick:

Before

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g40/DledRhapsody/lando2006.jpg

After.

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g40/DledRhapsody/lando2007.jpg

Wow actually I think I'll bring the sharpening down just a little. There aren't too many halos except along to top of the frame, but I can crop off those couple pixels, they're outside the DVDs letterboxing anyway.

Hal9000: Any plans for ROTJ? Or ANH? After all, ocp didn't color correct ANH either.

I had three weeks to work on ESB in time for it's showing next week, but ROTJ I will have one week. I'll need to capture my Special Edition VHS of ROTJ for a good color pallet. Ouch, maybe if I stop sleeping entirely I'll make it in time, I definitely want to release it around the forums for the 5.1 mix.

I'm still not sure about ANH. I'm aware of Ocp's 2.0's flaws, ah hell maybe I'll have my technique down by then. Making proper 5.1 mix for ANH will be a challenge. It's funny when any preservation/de-seing projects start with ANH, it's the hardest one to do! But everybody starts there for chronology's sake! Anyway.

andy_k_250: Are you working on a Mac or PC? Also, does the video in this have the same noise that OCP's videos did?

PC. And Thundercracker's right, the noise isn't bad at all, but every now and then it comes up. The only real problem with these histograms (and I was warned about these before I used them) is that sometimes they diminish explosions a little. The worst shot (and the only bad shot really) right now is the explosion of the shield generator, absolutely white:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g40/DledRhapsody/shieldgenerator.jpg

Once I come up with a half-baked solution for this, and maybe work with Vader's saber a little more, I think it'll be done. Just trying to think over a DVD menu and all that over the next week. Glad for the positive feedback . I feel bad for stepping into the limelight with desree's histogram work, but dammit he disappeared on us.

A friend of mine is president of the film club at our school, and next Wednesday we’re showing Ocp’s Classic Edition of Star Wars. People are freaking and it’s likely a lot are going to show. Posters are everywhere, a trailer I made was played on the morning announcements. It’s going to rock. Ocp will be given full credit, no worries. Anyway we were going to do the other two original Classic Editions, but by 2.0’s standards they’re a little dated.

Anyway, if Ocp went back and did a 2.0 Classic Edition for Empire I know it would probably blow this out of the water, but he’s not, but Ocp’s method I thought was on the right track for a whole genre of “preservations/fanedits” of Star Wars, but no one followed up on his work, which as good as it was, is succumbing to new sources and techniques.

Using both discs from the 2006 release of The Empire Strikes Back, auto-correction histograms developed in this thread, and a few sharpen filters here and there I have my own De-Se’ing project.

DVD quality, but R2’s dome is back in black!

Yoda without neon green skin.

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g40/DledRhapsody/cloudcity.jpg

Cloud city with a more natural yellow color to it.

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g40/DledRhapsody/cloudcity2.jpg

Laserdisc footage just dropped into timeline, sharpened a little and color corrected to match surrounding shots. I did this with most all the changes, it looks fine. Ocp’s fixes have a terrible jerkiness to them, something fixed in his 2.0, and here too.

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g40/DledRhapsody/vadersaber.jpg

Vader’s saber more red than pink, I can’t remember if this is a shot I actually corrected, cause some shots were fine and others weren’t, they’re all generally consistent now. I basically color replaced the pink core with white, and also brought up the reds in those particular shots a little.

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g40/DledRhapsody/cloudcity3.jpg

The shaft looking gray instead of cartooney blue.

All in all I like the look I get from these histograms. It looks kinda like a crisp and clear print of an 80s movie instead of something trying to look like the prequel trilogy. Also, Ocp’s edits never had a 5.1 mix, so I wanted this one to be a 5.1 mix that pretty accurately reflected the original sound mix, or the one we’re used to anyway. The only changes I think I left alone were the few cockpit shots of the falcon that were zoomed in a little.

This version is to be shown at my school in about a week, so that’s when the DVD should be about done.

Final DVD specs:
-DL Mpeg2 Video avg 7.5 mbps
-5.1 Dolby Surround
-2.0 Dolby Stereo
-Isolated score (I’d like to, but maybe not)
-Animated menus

Why don't we all just ask permission from Lucasfilm? You can do that for non-profit related things all the time. I got permission to play a Johnny Lang song a few year ago on public access and it didn't cost me anything...God what makes me mad is the "unfair competition" line, as if this umbrella term really applies to the them. I know it's generic protection for all copyright owners, poor and rich. But still.

Why do I have to buy Star Wars when I can see screenshots of it on this website???!!!

American Attitudes (foreigners welcome)
Time
I think all these answers would be a great help, any more would be welcome to, I can get them in by the end of the night. But my apologies, I need to clarify, I get caught up in quaint little jokes I forget text lacks inflection in tone.

This is a high school sociology class and, yes, it is the gayest hour of my day, the way it's taught is as the Charmen Ultra of all soft-sciences. I think it's the teacher. And you wouldn't believe the douche bags who fall for the "loaded questions" TheCassidy brought up. You're totally right we get these all year!

What I meant by "lame that American's think that" was as an example of one of the many foreign perspectives I might get, and I wanted to make sure people would feel comfortable voicing such an opinion, but it definitely came out wrong. I also should have said "how this might differ from you as an individual." Without the "might" in there I can see how it seems like I assumed they were all wrong. My mistake, simply syntactical.

I wasn't being facetious at all when I said the thing about thinking we're super cool, cause we totally are. Earlier in the year the class talked about how a lot of students in Japan like to take trips to America to be "bad" or "get in trouble" because in Japan, being bad or a too individualistic is apparently looked upon most of the time with great resentment, and being in an environment where rebellion is more emphasized as "cool" is very refreshing for them.

In fact, I think the idea that Americans are super cool is perhaps more of a foreign concept that one to be found here on the home front.

Actually, I have a story about that . I saw this in action last summer. These two smoking-hot Japanese foreign exchange students were staying in our town for a little while, their host family was really fucking boring. I went to a party with a friend hosted by their hostess, everyone there was a total loser and the foreigners were very bored. After flirting with them a little we asked if they wanted to go somewhere, and they immediately said yes. So we drove around at midnight in my 66 Volvo and later took a trip 30 or 40 minutes away in my friend's unregistered, uninsured 80s BMW (trouble, trouble ). Before we left for Tacoma, Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody started playing, and as we returned, Queen's We Are the Champions started playing. It was 7am when we returned them and their host family got really, really pissed off. God, it was awesome. Anyway, I bring that up because I personally think Americans are totally the coolest, at least obviously to the Japanese, whose charming attempt at completely copying our culture sprung forth their unique and whacky neo-customs, am I right?

Anyway, again apologies to all about my post. I definitely love the country I'm from and love the people we put out...well actually, my only critique of America is the people nowadays. There's the people who can't hear what the world's saying about us, and there's the people who are making too big a deal out of what other people think! The latter people make me much madder. If those people think that we don't respect the elderly then it must be true and we must be terrible terrible people, if those people value being in a group then we must be wrong to be individuals. One is like a jock in high school who thinks he's so great for no reason (the deaf), and the other's like that loser in school who cares too much about what other people think (the liberal bashing), and this is exactly what makes him the loser he is. This assignment to me ranks of both. Idealogue liberal bitching and self-centered conservativeness .

So I just need to clear up to C3PX and to everyone. I think we all pretty much agree and it's nice to find others like me . You know how forums can be, you write like you speak, but the lack of inflection and voice can lead to misunderstandings.

Yes this is the lamest class ever. But there's a neat assignment coming up where we study a specific culture or subculture. Guess what "community" I'll be featuring?

American Attitudes (foreigners welcome)
Time
I only call everyone else foreigners cause I guess technically...this particular thread is American soil. Anyway, I have this sociology class and there's an assignment due Friday, interviews with people on their reaction to American "attitudes." We're supposed to interview someone older than us, but super bonus points for a person from another culture, and this forum I felt was the best way to reach other "peoples." Anyway. This little sheet here might be kind of enlightening to some people, clarifying to others...who knows. Just post your reaction to each number.

For example (foreigners): how this differs or not from your country's overall attitudes, how that's lame that American's think that, how you can see that in what we do worldwide...I dunno whatever the hell you want.

For example (citizens): how this differs from you as an individual, how you've received clarification on how super cool we are, stuff you think is outdated, changed, been corrupted by the Bush administration...etc.

Post as much or as little as you want, on whatever you want. All will be read in a public forum, I hope to get some foreign perspective, but anyone's free to do it. Just keep writing, the more the better, no fear of garrulity, just keep going. I hope you take the time. =) Finish off with your age, what country you are from, and forum signature.
