Question About DVD Collections
Time
I suspect that if you phoned the customer service line, and then told them you got whatever box set, but the box was damaged, that they'd send you a new one. Sneaky and underhanded, but it'll probably work. New Line replaced a bunch of boxes for the Two Towers when the wrong kind of glue was used to attatch the bonus material list to the back of the extended edition boxes

the "ultimate edition"
Time
Lucas opened a big can of worms when he made the Special Editions. The day he started fussing around with them is the day that it became impossible for there to be a "definitive" version of the film for any of the fans. The problem is, as in the Matrix, choice. As soon as fandom was given a choice, regardless of whether Lucas intended for us to have a choice, consensus became impossible. This next set of special "Special Editions" merely confuses matters further. The more permutations of any given scene or change there are, the more division there will be amongst the fan base.

Still, it's interesting to hear what individual fans would keep, remove, or the changes they would make if they were Lucas. My personal take on the changes is this: I have no problem with cosmetic changes. New effects to replace those that didn't quite come off. Updating things that have aged poorly. I draw the line at changes which interfere with what the movie was originally, or interefere with the pacing. Greedo shoots first, wampa, screaming at bespin, Vader's new taking off in the shuttle and landing on the star destoryer sequence. And of course, changes which just suck: Jedi Rocks sequence, Sarlacc has a beak and squeals like a pig, Stupid construction robot smacking probe droid in mos eisley, bizarre no purpose fly through of cloud city.

I personally will be picking up the DVDs when they hit later this month, if only to make my own, personal, definitive editions for my own enjoyment.

Star Wars TV Series Confirmed & Hamill Talks 7, 8 and 9

Would that be the same Lucas who said he was finished tinkering with the OT when asked if we could expect more "special editions"? Or the Same Lucas who swore blind that Ewan McGregor would never be Obi-Wan? The same Lucas who said he originally envisioned 9 films? and then changed his story to 6, claiming 9 was a concoction of the media? The Same Lucas who claimed He made Han shoot first because he didn't want Han to come off as a cold blooded killer? The Same Lucas who then changed his story to Greedo was always supposed to shoot first, but an editing flub made it come out the way it did?

Yeah, I trust that Lucas, anythng he says is worthy of being taken seriously.

Is nothing sacred? The Krayt dragon change (re the 2004 OT SE DVD release)
Time

Okay. Changes have been made, we all know it. But this, this is ridiculous. Why, oh why, did they feel the need to change the Krayt Dragon cry that obi wan uses to scare away the sand people? The new scream sounds so incredibly bad! What was the purpose? why this change? what about 1977 technology didn’t allow you to make the Krayt Dragon scream sound 100 times worse George? Come on asshole, justify this one, I defy you to justify this change.

Yeah, I got a response. Where do you come up with this garbage?

I agree, Lucas and Co. are pretty good at the disinformation biz, however, I wouldn't point at Supershadow as a good example. Supdershadow is a comic genius, not some branch of Lucasfilm disfinormation. If he were. Lucasfilm certainly wouldn't have shut him down for a short while, nor would they have required him at one point to carry disclaimer that clearly said the entire site was fictitious.

I won't speculate on who George's inspiration is because honestly, I doubt George even has an asnwer. His work is too sloppy, too poorly constructed and slapped together to be the product of any kind of master plan. As for his comments about having the right to rework the OT as much as he wants. Yeah, I've heard it before. And sure, they're his films, he can do waht he likes. However, that does not excuse him from his responsibility to society to preserve an important part of cinema history. What would Lucas say if Fritz Lang were alive today and decided to tinker around with Metropolis? Maybe dub in some voices, new CG effects, perhaps change some scenes, add some new ones, and then never release the original again. Well, considering his stance on the Stooges, I'd imagine Lucas would take issue with that, because, well, Lucas is a hypocrit.

As for the green screen stuff... That's just stupid. There's not a snowball's chance in hell they filmed an entire trilogy under wraps. too much money, time, and people involved to keep anything like that silent this long. Too many people have come and gone at ILM and lucasfilm for not a single word of this to have leaked out. Not to mention you seem to have a poor grasp of what green screen technology is actually capable of. Honestly, this is the kind of speculation that Belongs on Supershadows site, because there it would be abundantly clear that it's a work of comedy. Here, you come off like you're serious, and it kinda blows the humor factor of the posts.

Farsight's spelling is correct, but he misses the one line about liking solo where he is. I dunno that the ROTJ I downloaded looked anymore washed out than the original anamorphic version. I personally prefer it, but that's me.

All I want is to get my hands on those new pristine prints and do some editing to bring them more in line with the OT as it was. I'm not super zealous about changes, change is not neccessarily a bad thing, it's just the stupid changes I want to reverse

Info: OT Bootleg DVDs
Time
I've just finished downloading Farsight's Anamorphic Return of the Jedi.

First impressions:

It looks about as nice as you can expect an Anamorphic version made from from a non anamorphic, analog source to look. It's been my experience with the Anamorphic versions of the trilogy that they alwways tend to look soft. This is an unavoidable side effect of converting a non anamorphic source into anamorphic. That being said, this "problem" is more noticeable if you're watching the dvd on a standard 4:3 TV set, as opposed to a 16:9 TV. On my 21" Trinitron, the movie looks soft, on my 16:9 34" HD, it looks considerably better, though still on the softish side.

Sound:

It sounds really nice. It's especially nice to have the AC-3 track on this one.

Glitches or errors:

There's only one problem that I've come across thus far, and that's subtitles. The subtitles have been redone, which is to be expected. However, some of them are missing. Notably, when 3PO and R2 deliver the message, Jabba's line "I like Captain Solo where he is" (or something to that effect) is missing. Also, on some players (like the panasonic 5 disc progressive scan player hooked up to the 16:9 TV) the subtitles don't come up by default, you have to select them to turn them on. Not a huge issue, but kind of annoying.

Overall, it's a very nice version of Jedi. I certainly prefer it to the other Anamorphic version available. There aren't any menus or extras, but that's no biggee, especially when you've exchanged them for better sound and a higher bitrate on the image. All it needs is that one missing subtitle fixed.

Yoda's line of "Too old! Yes, too old to begin the training"...
Time
I hear ya. The jedi training, as it appears in the movies, seems really poor to me. These kids have no opportunity to build any kind of real view of what interpersonal relationships and interactions are. How are you supposed to raise jedi who know good from evil if they are brought up in an emotional vaccuum? This is not a way to give Jedi more control over their emotion,s it's a way to make them all the more succeptable to emotions when they finally venture out into the big wide galaxy, full of experiences so far beyond their realm of comprehension. I would think it would be much safer to train Jedi once they are old enough to fulloy comprehend and accept the immense responsibility that is inherent with the choice. A well balanced adult capable of making such a decission.

It's an entertaining thought, but I'm gonna have to be the boy who cries "bullshit" on this one. There's just a few too many inconsistencies here to be ignored.

Quote

In the fall of 1979, I had a college friend who had a good friend in Massachussets who was into special effects makeup. It seems this guy had been corresponding with Rick Baker, then creator of the cantina creatures in Episode 4. One day at lunch my friend told us these ridiculous ideas about the upcoming Star wars movies, and he mentioned that Darth Vader was going to be revealed as Luke's father, Leia would be his sister, etc... we all thought he was full of crap, and told him it sounded like a damn soap opera and dismissed the whole thing.

Until Return of the Jedi, several years later.

Several problems here. 1st, this conversation took place before Empire strikes back was released, so you should have realized in 1980 that his story was true. 2nd, Leia as Luke's sister wasn't a concept that was worked out until well into the script writing process for jedi. Initially, Luke's sister was supposed to be secreted away somewhere outside the known galaxy. That's according to Gary kurtz, producer of Star Wars and Empire. The whole Leia being Luke's sister thing came later in the script writing process, certainly a good deal after this supposed lunch.

As for the rest of your suppositions on where the sequel trilogy is going... Well, it sounds pretty poor to me. That being the case, I can definitely see Lucas going that route. Personally though, I'd be very much surprised if that's the direction 7, 8 and 9 will take, if they ever get made.

STAR WARS: The Torrents thread
Time
I've downloaded ANH several times now. The first was just misc. ANH anamorphic. It had a glitch that occured when Aunt Beru calls Luke to dinner, and the audio dropped out pretty severely during the scene where Han, Luke and Co. are being pulled in by the death star tractor beam. Next, I downloaded the TR47 version, which on my trinitron looks super nice, much crisper than the Anamorphic. Granted, as soon as I took it over to my HD Widescreen TV, I discovered this wasn't an anamorphic version of the film, drat. Finally, I downloaded another Anamorphic version, this one off the first page of this thread. This download didn't have the dinner glitch, but the audio still drops out noticably (though not as bad) during the death star/millennium falcon tractor beam scene.

Anyway, does anyone know if there is a glitch free, high quality anamorphic ANH torrent out there? I'm super happy having the tr47 version, but it'd be nice to watch these on the widescreen sometime.

Yay, hometheater stuff!

My system:

34" Toshiba HD Widescreen television
Pioneer 5-Disc Progressive scan dvd
Dolby Digital 5.1 Pioneer tuner/amp (I always confuse these two terms)
JBL speakers (2 front towers, center channel, 2 rear channels)
Subwoofer, but the specs escape me for that one

so yeah, anyone who wants to send me stuff for unbiased opinions (I will of course return said "stuff"), like I'm gonna say no

The 1997 SE's - My take
Time
it's a discussion of the changes, I gotsta chime in!

Quote

1. Dewbacks on Tatooine

The new dewbacks are alright, it's the way they were used that sucks. The CG stormtrooper looks awful, and the new shuttle they added looks terrible too. There really was no reason to make this change. The best use of it however, is the dewback at the entrance to the cantina.
Quote

2. Entering Mos Eisley

Absolutely useless. the little probe droid getting whalloped by the construction droid, so very un-star wars. And am I taking crazy pills, or did they totally screw up the model of 3PO on the cg landspeeder. His arms are STRAIGHT! 3PO's arm's don't straighten! they're permanently bent! And that redone rear shot where we see the speeder shooting away from us toward mos Eisley, pure ass. I'm all for expanding the scope of the place, putting some traffic in the sky, but they went too far. The peices of business with the jawas riding rontos and the swoop bikers, just ass. Having a ronto walk in front of the camera during a major scene with our characters!?! unforgivable.
Quote

3. Greedo shoots first

The holy grail of Star Wars bitching. The single most damning piece of proof that Lucas has gone completely insane. First, the shot itself. Talk about amatuer night at ILM! Han's lips continue to move even though they cut off the dialogue (some excellent dialogue as it happens), Greedo misses, in spite of his blaster being aimed directly at Han, and being less than 2 feet from his chest, The shot looks horrible, the ricochet combined with Han's shot combine to make it look like Greedo got caught by his own ricochet, Han DOESN"T REACT to be shot at, doesn't even blink! just horribly executed all around. Beyond that, George's story as to why this change was made is in a constant state of flux. First, he was making the change because he didn't want Han to come off as a cold blooded killer. That's the story he gave in 97. More recently he's cllaimed that he always meant to have Greedo shoot first, and that they filmed it that way, and a flub during the editing and fx process lost the moment. Oh, I see, that's why Harison, in a display of mastery of his craft, failed to react to being shot at, riiiiiiggght.
Quote

4. Jabba the Hutt

Crappy, redundant, and does a lot to destroy Jabba's character. Solo has no fear of Jabba in the scene, he does not treat Jabba with any kind of respect or fear of his position, and we're supposed to believe he's one of the most powerful gangsters in the universe. And don't anybody say it has to do with Han's "character" that's bull. You don't get to be the best smuggler in the biz by treating your client with outright disrespect and disdain, nor would he be stupid enough to think he could treat a crime boss of Jabba's stature like a two bit punk without fear of retribution, especially if he's already in debt in a major way. If they could have reworked the scene, leaving the guy in instead of replacing him with jabba, and redubbing some lines with Harrison and another actor, turning Jabba into, say, Heater (from the radio series) I would have no problem with the addition. Making it into heater (one of Jabba's contractors, think of him like an agent of smugglers) lends more credibility to Han's flippant attitude. Not to mention, a crime boss of Jabba's stature would never make a house call like that.
Quote

5. Escaping from Mos Eisley

I'm happy with this addition for the most part. My only problem is that the CG falcon is too skinny. When you see it head on or in profile, she's not nearly as "thick" as the model was. That's fine, as long as they replace all of the falcon shots, otherwise it's a little inconsistent.
Quote

6. Alderaan

god damn stupid praxis effect! Come on! you guys are freakin' ILM! You can come up with something more interesting for an exploding planet than some recycled crap from Star Trek VI! Let's see huge chunks of planet! a massive expanding debris field! perhaps a spherical praxis effect would even work better than what you guys did!
Quote

7. Stormtrooper multiplication

Doesn't bother me, makes Han's sudden stop and run away funnier and easier to understand.
Quote

8. Falcon approaches the rebel base

Looks real nice to me.
Quote

9. Biggs

100% success! This was a beautiful addition.
Quote

10. Battle of Yavin

Okay, a lot of the dog fight sequences were looking pretty bad. Really slow ship and camera moves in places, problems with perspective, what have you. I love most of the new Cg footage for the battle of Yavin. What I don't understand though is this: Why didn't they redo the trench run? That sequence is bursting with effects problems! Ships traveling along incorrect paths of perspective, such that they should be crashing into the walls of the trench. Lucas complained on "From star wars to jedi: the saga behind the saga" that he wished he could redo the trench run, make it more exciting, add some obstacles in the trench to enhance the sense of danger. Why didn't he do it? These are all changes that could have really enhanced the sequence. As it stands, it's cool, but inconsistent.
Quote

11. Death Star explosion

See No. 6

"The Empire Strikes Back"
Quote

1. Wampa cave

Hey look, there's the wampa, eating a pieceof tauntaun, now lets cut back to Luke so we can listen to the already dead tauntaun scream for a bit, before cutting back to wampa, still eating tauntaun, which is no longer screaming, and back to Luke, so the tauntaun can scream some more. I completely disagree with Lucas that seeing the wampa makes it scarier. Not seeing the wampa was way scarrier.
Quote

2. Removal of matte lines during Hoth battle

Man, that would have been cool, it's a shame they didn't actually do it. Go check it out, the SE making of things all point out the same problem, being able to see through the canopy struts in the POV shots of the snow speeders. Supposedly they went in and fixed it. However, go watch the battle of hoth and frame by frame it. Guess what, you can still see through the canopy struts! they're just a little darker. Way to go ILM, that's earning the ol' paycheck.
Quote

3. Various small musical changes

This bothered me to no end. I'm too familiar with the musical cues of the OT. I can name and describe a scene just from hearing the music. The little additions and subtractions of seconds here and there throws me off. I'm expecting to hear the music do something, and it doesn't happen, and while my brain is going "what the fu..?" in comes the cue my ear had been expecting several seconds before. Drives me nuts. And damn them for chopping up the music from the bespin escape sequence with that useless new Darth Vader scene with his shuttle. Sure it looks pretty, but it's an absolutely useless change!
Quote

4. Slave 1 pursues the Falcon

I dig it, looks real nice.
Quote

5. Arrival at Cloud City

Pretty, but a little much, and the Flacon is still not thick enough. you really notice the difference between the CG model and the regular Falcon when it lands on the platform, very jarring transition.
Quote

6. Manic cloud-car shot.

I appreciate that you wanna show off Bespin Geroge, but honestly, this is an addition without justifiable purpose. Leave the views of bespin to scenes that justify them.

MagnoliaFan Edition Episode III-VI Titles
Time
I'm still on the fence in regards to "The Hidden Fotress", it just seems to me too directly derivitive of Kurosawa, and as I mentioned before, it's refer to a specific tangible thing which while a major plot point, doesn't really embody the film. That's just my opinion though. As for "Dark Force Rising" over "Revenge of the Sith" well... I'll never be able to divorce Dark Force Rising from the thrawn novel. Nor do I think Revenge of the Sith is a bad title. The arguement that people don't know who or what the sith are holds true for the PT as it stands now, but from the endless discussions we've been having about your edits and plans, I'd say your final versions will go a long way towards eradicating that ignorance on the part of the audience, in which case, there really wouldn't be any need to change the title. Also, I never truly liked the title "Dark Force Rising" for the novel, Always sounded kind of hokey to me.

For me, my titling Scheme would flow thus:

I: Balance of the Force
II: The Clone War
III: Revenge of the Sith
IV: The Flame of Rebellion
V: The Empire Strikes Back
VI: Return of the Jedi

that's just me though, like I always say, these are your edits, you gotta do what feels right to you.

If the classics were released...
Time
Granted, the changes made back in 77 were of a much less conspicuous or important nature. Adding the subtitle "Episode IV: A New Hope" is hardly on par with having greedo shoot first, adding cgi song/dance numbers, or any of the SE changes. The whole elitist attitude about who's seen the "original" Star Wars is kinda crappy I think. If you saw Star Wars in the theater before 1997, or on video, laserdisc, CED, what have you, then you saw the original Star Wars in my books, regardless of if some percentage saw a version without the episode subtitle, or some saw a print with a slightly different audio track.
