MagnoliaFan Edits: Ep I "Balance Of The Force", and Ep II "The Clone War" (Released)
Time
that just seems to me to be the whole reason behind the rule. The Sith needed to survive, so 1 master 1 apprentice. Hard to detect in such a large galaxy. There is of course the question of whether there could be other sith out there, and that the rule of two refers specifically to pairings. No master having more than one apprentice, but that's another debate. Once the sith have plotted and manipulated long enough to wipe out the jedi, the rule of 2 becomes redundant. No need to hide anymore, they've won.

I think yoda's status as one of the most powerful Jedi ever pretty much precludes the possibility of him ever having been approached by the sith. A Sith lord would have a much easier time turning a younger, less experienced Jedi, or one who clearly cannot maintain total control of his/her/its emotions. Personally, the rule fo 2 makes sense for the prequels, but I think the sith would abandon it as soon as they'd taken over. It's whole purpose was to allow the Sith to survive after the Jedi destroyed them. once the Jedi are gone, the only threat to the Sith's existence is gone, and the rule of 2 can be abandoned.

Star Wars DVD Covers
Time
Wicked. It's really remarkable how excellent a lot of these covers are. Makes you wonder why we're not the ones doing this professionally, when you look at some of the lame duck DVD covers out there, Predator 2 anyone?

I have an FTP server if that'll help you out. Dunno if you do ftp, but I figure it'd make for easier and faster file transfer. If that's good for you let me know and I'll PM you with the addy and the user name/password.

Prequels from an Expanded Universe POV
Time
Actually, you can download those comics on torrent. I found the whole thrawn trilogy on isohunt.com. that would be my suggestion. Saddly, each book is handled by a different artist, with varying results. My preference is the artist who did the first book, although he took a few too many stylistic liberties at times, the Nohgri being the most blatent example, followed by the ysalimiri. Personaly, for my money, the older comics were a lot better than the current batch. I much prefered the tales of the jedi and sith war stuff to the current batch. But perhaps that's just me.

Hey Rikter, those of us who make covers for the trilogy, how would you feel about us sending the finished products to you for inclusion in your torrent? Just a thought really, I was thinkning it would be really cool if there were an archive torrent that could be continually updated with the efforts of those who are into doing this kind of thing. I downloaded the torrent yesterday, and there is some really fine work on there. Anyway, just curious to get your thoughts on the idea, and maybe set up the submission policies if you decide to do it.

If the classics were released...
Time
I'd pick up the SE's if the OT were also available. Curiousity and the completest in me would demand it. Whether I would *like* the SE's is another matter entirely. As a film buff in general though, it's always interesting to see the different paths films can take. I have the Criterion box of "Brazil" with both the directors cut and the Studio cut of the film, and the difference is shocking. Same holds true for the Directors cut vs the Theatrical cut of Blade Runner. As a study in film history, the SE's would be an interesting case study, and there's just no way I could resist owning both. To my mind, Lucas can mess around with the films as much as he likes, just as long as the OT remains available. That's the only thing I want.

Star Wars Radio Dramas - a general discussion thread
Time
I do. As far as Story goes, the Radio Dramas have it all over the movies. They'll never be able to match the pure viceral experience the OT is, but they're certainly my favourite versions of the story. Jedi I'm not as keen on as the first two. I think that doing it 20 years later with less money and less time really hurt the production. The descriptive dialogue is much more noticable and intrusive, and the absence of Mark Hamill really hurts things. It surprises me they couldn't get him, seeing as he does mostly voicework anyways.

As far as the PT goes, I doubt it'll ever happen, and honestly I'd be happy if it didn't. Jar Jar is almost completely unbearable on film, I'd hate to deal with so much more of him, especially when he has to be conveyed purely through his voice *shudder*.

Star Wars Bloggers
Time
To clarify also, where the word "Blog" comes from, the orignal term Is Web log, however, people just stuck the word together, hacked off the ends and boom, you've got "blog". For some it's a diary or Journal, for others it's more akin to an internet cork board. And for still others, it's an internet "soapbox".

Star Wars Bloggers
Time
Well, I'm sure most of us are aware that Erich's Star Wars blog is gone. That's a shame, he had some really interesting points on his page, and they were all very well presented. Anyway, I got to thinking, there are surely other bloggers out there talking about star wars, but the thing is, no one knows about them. Hence this thread. I'm merely proposing that we make a comprehensive listing of Star Wars Blogs. Just an idea, and here's a start. If there's enough interest, I'll come back and update this post with the urls that are posted or msg'd to me:

The Emperor's Throne Room - This is Darth Sheba's Blog, you may have seen her around the forums by now. I've gone back and read the whole of it, and it's some terrific stuff. Obviously someone who cares deeply about Star Wars.

Docking Bay 94 - This is my Blog. I started it just recently, when I discovered that Erich's had disappeared. My appologies to Sheba for using the same template as her blog, but as she is no doubt aware, it's the best template blogger.com offers

T'Bone's Star Wars Universe T-Blog - Almost forgot that there was a Blog on T'Bones site. T'Bone has a pretty terrific Star Wars site, and while his blog isn't updated terribly often, it's certainly worth checking out. Good stuff to be had by all.

Hmmm, well, I had intended to search out other Star Wars themed blogs, but my searches are turning up dry. That's kind of surprising really. Oh well. If anybody has more to add to the list, let's have 'em

The Original Trilogy - Laser Disc Conversion Thread
Time
I'd be curious to know, is it possible to get a straight digital read of a laserdisc? Or does one have to output the analog signal from the LD into a capture device? I seem to recall back in highschool that the science dept had a laserdisc player with a serial port that allowed them to connect a computer to it. What exactly this was for, I don't know, but it seems to me that if we can take the raw data off the laserdisc, as opposed to the analog output, we'd end up with a higher quality product.

Plot Point Clarification---Please (re ESB)
Time
I really can't say I see this as a plot hole. If you need an indication in the film that Vader knows who Skywalker is when Empire begins, it's right there in the opening crawl. "Vader, obsessed with finding young Skywalker". It's not like it's a huge leap of logic to think that Imperial Intelligence, between the Battle of Yavin and the battle of Hoth, discovered the name of the Rebellion's big hero. the name alone is enough to spark Vader's interest, the fact that he has felt the force in him, before he knew the name, is enough to make sure that when he does get the name, he can put it all together. "Hmmm, kid whose last name is skywalker and is strong in the force... Possibly was in the company of Obi-Wan Kenobi and came from tatooine. Naaaah, probbly just a coincidence."

It seems perfectly logical to me that bewteen Star Wars and Empire, Vader has been informed of Luke's name, why we need something explicitly stating when and where that occurs, I don't know. We never see the characters sleep or use the washroom in the trilogy, but I think we can assume they do. It just doesn't require a scene to show it.

The Original Trilogy - Laser Disc Conversion Thread
Time
well certainly, if the goal is to return the 2004 edition into a carbon copy of the original release. That however, is not quite the aim. The key here is returning the story to what it once was. Purely cosmetic changes that have no bearing on plot or characters aren't the issue that people have with the SE's. Changes like Greedo shooting first, The Jabba sequence, Luke's scream on Bespin, the new lines for vader replacing "Bring my shuttle" and the new sequence of arriving on the Star Destroyer, The celebration scenes at the end of Jedi; all of these change the film in a much more signifigant way than if Artoo's panels appear blue in outer space now. Of course, there are additions to the film of a cosmetic nature that just suck and should be removed: Sarlacc Pit with beak, new musical sequence in Jabba's palace, Praxis effect on Death Star and Alderaan explosions, New Wampa. Those scenes, however, don't really signifigantly alter the films to the degree that other additions/subtractions do. Which scenes truly add to or take away from the films is, of course, debatable. SOme poeple like the addition of Luke's scream as he falls on Bespin, I think it negates the entire point of the scene. Some people like the sarlacc beak, I hate the bloody thing. Some people like the celebrations at the end of Jedi, I personally find it ridiculous and unrealistic. Some people like having the old Biggs scenes included, others do not.

The point is, that the SE's left alone, suck. However, with some judicous tweaking, they can be turned into films which are as good as, if not superior to the original films. I personally made my own edits of the OT back when the SE's hit laserdisc, and I prefer them to both the OT and the SE. That's just me though. For some, the OT will always be the only way to go, and that's fair enough. Others are more open to changes, as long as they are made to the benefit of the film (ie. the cleaning up of matte lines, cosmetic enhancement, the inclusion of previously cut scenes which add depth to the film). Finally, there are those who will love the SE's because they Star Wars and Lucas can do no wrong.

Personally, I'm all for having the hiqhest quality picture possible, while removing some of the "fixes" that I believe were mistakes. It may not be exactly the OT, but it's the best we can do.
