The Abyss - Special Edition (1989) BluRay Project - see Page 2 (Released)
Time

Right now, as I type this, Cinemax in the USA is running a new HD master of The Abyss in 2.35. It is definitely HD and not the same master as the Japanese HD. I tuned in late but it is going to air tomorrow also. I am going to DVR it. It would be nice if someone with good capture equipment can get a copy.

Info: True Lies - Archival Project???
Time

Well, Cinemax in the USA just ran a new HD master of True Lies on 3/30. I just compared it to the D Theater tape and it is definitely a new master. True Lies was was also open matte. I just wanted people to know in case someone can capture it. I have a copy on my DVR but not sure I can capture it for a useful copy.

They also have are running (right now as I type this) a new HD master of The Abyss in 2.35. It is definitely HD and not the same master as the Japanese HD.

Movies with wrong color grading *** UPDATED ***
Time

Since it was mentioned here. I was comparing the DVD, HDTV and Criterion BD of Thief. Wow, that is a massively changed color scheme. Luckily, someone already put together this together:

http://www.caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergleiche/multi_comparison.php?disc1=3605&disc2=3606&hd_multiID=1497

The HDTV's color are similar to the old DVD for reference.

Most of these laserdiscs are close to the original Dolby Stereo/Mono/etc but those Cinema DTS are exactly what you heard in the theater. No argument about it.

...ehr, can I correct this statement?

The Cinema DTS included in our BD project is not 100% the same of the one heard in theaters, just because it should be converted from 44.1KHz to 48KHz in order to comply to BD standard. Said that, I think we could affirm that it's still 99% closer, and that's more than enough to me.

Obviously if someone decide to make an MKV/MP4 file, and the player reads properly the track, this will be 100% the same.

I want to add a thing: the only 100% laserdisc track that could be used for any DVD or BD(AVCHD) project is the Dolby Digital one, as it's 48KHz even on laserdisc; the PCM should be converted from 44.1 to 48KHz, while the analog could be captured directly at 48KHz but due to its intrinsic nature, it will be not a 1:1 copy as intended in the digital domain; still, a very good quality track!

All very true, point taken and I agree with you Andrea but you get my point.

When you think about it, most likely those 44.1 kHz tracks (either PCM Dolby Stereo/Surround off LDs or DTS Cinema discs) probably started life as 48 kHz (in the 80s and 90s) studio masters. They were just converted to fit to the LD's or CD's audio standards. When we convert them to 48kHz for the BD standard, we are just returning them something similar to the original master anyway.

I think we can agree that done right, switching between 44.1 and 48 shouldn't be obvious to the listener.

Quick question: Does anyone have the PCM for Sleepy Hollow from the LD?

All I have is DTS cinema for the live action Sleepy Hollow.

Thanks Jetrell Fo, I love you DTS project. Who would ever think you could get access to the original theatrical sound. It is beyond awesome!

I should say now that not everyone enjoys the cinema DTS.  We have to remember, most of the time when these movies go to DVD/Bluray, the soundtracks get remixed and beefed up for those who don't have fancy surround systems.  Some theater mixes were made a little hot.  For instance, I've heard a lot of folks comment on how good the SE Trilogy mixes were for the theater ...... they were created that way for the theater.  To kick your ass while you're still in your seat, others weren't.

The LFE isn't designed as a subwoofer channel, it's a low frequency effects channel so if the movie doesn't have a lot of special effects, it may come off as quiet or non-existent.  That's not to say that one couldn't adjust the channels before putting them in to a DTS encoder as sometimes channels have hot-spots that need to be toned down for home use.  Each film is different in it's own right depending on what it needs due to it's presentation.

I definitely hear were you are coming from Jetrell but I don't understand why people wouldn't like the sound of the Cinema DTS. I started this thread as an attempt to catalog and save soundtracks that were as close to what you heard in the theater as possible. Most of these laserdiscs are close to the original Dolby Stereo/Mono/etc but those Cinema DTS are exactly what you heard in the theater. No argument about it. I for one, love to hear what it sounded like in the theater. No near-field nonsense, no filtering the LFE, no clipping the highs and lows for the dialogue...none of that, just what the mixer intended an audience to hear, I want to hear that in home too. Jurassic Park and the Matrix's Cinema DTS soundtracks just had better dynamics coming out of my speakers. More punch. To each their own, I still think it is a cool project.

As there will be some empty space in the BD-25, I want to fill it with ONE secondary english soundtrack from laserdisc.

Which do you prefer between these:

  1. DTS
  2. PCM
  3. Analog

I'd like to NOT include the DTS, as there will be the Cinema DTS one, so probably the laserdisc will be really similar; still don't know if to use the PCM, or the analog, just to make something different; these ones should reflect the 4.0 theatrical mix, so I'm almost surely choose one of them, to have a different mix.

I don't think there is a commentary track somewhere, but if it exist, please let me know; also, maybe I could find a place to add also an HD trailer...

 Hey _,,,^..^,,,_,

Great project, I'm looking forward to the results. Concerning the audio. It would be nice to have one of the 5.0 (or is it 4.0) remixed soundtracks from the DVD(s) or the HD-DVD/BD to contrast against the Cinema DTS' 5.1. I'm not sure if the DTS on the LD is the original 5.1 or the 5.0 (if it is 5.0 it would be nice to include). Anyway just my opinion. Good luck!

You could probably piece together a good portion of the IMAX scenes in 1.78 from the clips that are shown in the special features(which are surprisingly long). They have a nice bitrate, too. It would require some editing though, since the center of the frame is sometimes obscured by text. Overlaying the 2.35 Blu-ray image over it should be enough to cover it up. Anything not shown in there could be patched up with the iTunes and HDTV sources. Just an idea.

I've already done that. I've pilfered through all the special features to get everything I can. We just need a good capture of the EPIX broadcast and we'll have a quality version.

Unfortunately, the capture I did was the VOD of Verizon's FIOS. FIOS uses IP to transmit VOD content. The VOD has terrible compression in an effort to minimize bandwidth, which gives us the marco-blocking (plus frame problems that eldiablosuizo ran into) . The macro-blocking is baked in, it is not my capture. The good news is this is the "early preview" so STID hasn't actually appeared on EPIX yet (should be in a few days). Hopefully, when it premieres the regular broadcast should be much better (and hopefully 16:9). The broadcast version should be better on FIOS since the regular channels use QAM that they don't recompress the original signal (opposed to the IP for the VOD).

Hopefully someone with better equipment can capture it. I used my Hauppauge hd pvr since my HDMI capture is on the fritz. I can try to capture the broadcast version when it is on.

Star Trek Into Darkness Bonus disc (Released)
Time

Ok I did a quick-and-dirty capture of EPIX's VOD presentation this morning and here are the results.

The good is that the Imax scenes are 16:9, I took some screen caps. The aren't the exact frames (I have a baby in one arm and a computer in the other, so accuracy is lacking)

Blu-ray (Top)/VOD (Bottom)

Blu-ray (Top)/Elegant Tobacco's Image\VOD (Bottom)

The 2.35 scenes seem to be cropped at the sides and not open matte.

The bad news is that the presentation is watermarked/bugged but luckily not continuously throughout. The EPIX logo comes and goes:

And sadly, even worse, there is a lot of macro-blocking/bad mpg-2 compression:

I made a 14GB MKV (1080i/ac3) of the capture.

I just watched enough to make sure it was 16:9 throughout but the opening scene in the "red jungle"  looked to have more information on the top and bottom (same as the Imax).

I will try to run a capture this weekend. I can do HD but I probably don't have as great of equipment as others. I will try to capture and take screenshots.

From the wanted list in post 2, I have these laserdiscs, and should be able to capture the PCM audio bit-perfectly.:

Apocalypse Now

Army Of Darkness

Blade Runner (dir cut, CAV)

Jaws (not sure of the version)

Die Hard 2 (and 1 and 3 if needed)

Terminator 2

Movies I want the LD (or even VHS HiFi) soundtracks from:

Return Of The Living Dead (plus 2 and 3)

The Junkman (all the music was replaced on the DVD version)

That would be great clenchdwarf! Any of those you could send my way would be great and most appreciated.

If anyone is looking for a soundtrack, let me know and I will add it to the list. I just added Doombot looking for Creepshow 2

Out of curiosity do you know why the Junkman soundtrack was changed? Maybe a music rights issue?

and it was very, very difficult to sync, this whole sync job was very hard to do and almost made
me scrap the whole deal lol, I hope to never, ever run into this again, and I have 2 LD's of this
and both were identical regarding the quality and issues, so we did the best we could to make this work.**

Enjoy

That's fantastic, I love this movie!
