Info: Re-mixed audio tracks on video releases
Time

The Aluminum Falcon said:

Does anyone have an English mono mix of the Good, Bad, and Ugly synced to the Mondo BD? I was considering burning myself a copy with the synced English surround audio, but, naturally, mono PCM would be of course preferable.

I have both but not synced. It is a lot of work since there are a lot of pieces that are changed. Besides the Italian scene additions, the torture scene is changed around and there are a few seconds here and there that are added. I hope to work on it one day as I have a lot of laserdisc tracks like gbu that I want to sync up.

Even though returns was the first offical dolby digital soundtrack I think the dolby stereo surround is still worth saving/preserving as that would of been the way most people would of heard it in the theater at the time. Dolby digital was new and hadn't reached market penetration yet (although it quickly did). At the end of the day it is probably closer to the original theatrical mix then anything else (although that's a guess).

The only DVD I've seen is the 1997 U.S. snap case release from Warner Bros.  The colors on that release are, to my eyes, correct.

And those were the colors I saw on this 35mm print. Color timing on the snapper DVD, laserdiscs and VHS tapes are all the same as the print. Very yellow and desert wasteland like. Thunderdome has a similar color timing. The blu-rays for Mad Max 2/Road Warrior have a very different cooler/bluer color timing.

Road Warrior or Mad Max 2?

Same movie different cuts. But this was The Road Warrior, since it was a US print from the 80s.

Just saw a 35mm print of the Road Warrior last night at the American Film Institute in Silver Spring,

Maryland (USA):

http://www.afi.com/silver/films/2013/p62/ozploitation.aspx#roadw

I had just watched the new avc encoded blu-ray with Jonno's LD audio capture

and I was looking for what the color timing was on this print. Whether it was the

old DVD/LD's yellow color timing or the new bluer color timing of the blu-ray.

I printed out these color comparisons from blu-ray.com so I could be sure I

knew what I was looking for:

http://www.blu-ray.com/images/reviews/upload/cc2,jpg.jpg

http://www.blu-ray.com/images/reviews/upload/cc3.jpg

Long story short , even though the first reel had gone a little pink, it was clear that the old DVD's color timing is the original, correct color timing. I asked about the print after and it was an original for the early 80s.

DTS audio preservation .... UPDATE 07 May 2015 ... Work In Progress

OK, I have a small update for all of you ......

DTS audio for the Matrix is finished.  The 2 other films in the trilogy are being worked on.  This audio was synched to the Bluray.  The end result was a 2.11GB DTS-HD file.

Format                                   : DTS
Format/Info                              : Digital Theater Systems
Format profile                           : MA / Core
File size                                : 2.11 GiB
Overall bit rate mode                    : Variable

Audio
Format                                   : DTS
Format/Info                              : Digital Theater Systems
Format profile                           : MA / Core
Mode                                     : 16
Format settings, Endianness              : Big
Bit rate mode                            : Variable
Bit rate                                 : Unknown / 1 509 Kbps
Channel(s)                               : 6 channels
Channel positions                        : Front: L C R, Side: L R, LFE
Sampling rate                            : 48.0 KHz
Bit depth                                : 16 bits
Compression mode                         : Lossless / Lossy

I believe I will be getting a PCM version of the DTS cinema audio as well.

It is currently not available for download but if there are enough interested parties I can set something up.

My partner in crime, DoomBot, has been kind enough to offer his editing/synching talents to help get these started.  CapableMetal has been our wise and honorable Yoda.  He's been so very helpful in working out a good method for working with these audio files.

Make sure to thank these folks, they deserve it.  DoomBot received a 25GB BD-r from me with different film audio on it.  After the Matrix Trilogy is finished I'd like to randomly do the other ones so each release is a surprise.  Please, no asking ...... it ruins the surprise.  I thought this would be a fun way to do these.  Let us know if you're interested.

I would also like gauge interest in media donations.  Maybe we could come up with a way for folks who donate to get a choice of audio sent to them on a BD-r before they are uploaded for everyone else.  Let me know how you all feel about this, please.

Thanks for your kindness and patience.

Shawn

Great job guys!. I'm down for a donation or help anyway I can.

DD DTS THX [BD project] (* unfinished project *)
Time

Great project Andrea, can't wait to see the results. I found these Dolby Stereo trailers on YouTube a few years ago. They are circa late 1970s into the 80s, same era as the Mancini trailer (great trailer). Not great quality but there you go:

True Lies, Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies .....

What how where when?? Did you manage to find the theatrical discs or extract the LD audio? This is exciting news, I've long wondered how the original tracks compared to their Dolby and remixed counterparts.

I just noticed that many on the first page are listed as found. Wow, this is really taking off.

Theatrical discs.  I have been lucky and thankful to have found the discs I have.

Well it all just talk for now, I do not have either the video file or the DTS files, so hopefully when these show up, if they do, then we can start putting something together.

I just received the audio yesterday and no-one has asked for it.  There is an obvious interest in this project so when we get the details sorted I'll decode the audio and send it to whomever is going to be heading the project.

Amazing work.

Preserving DTS LaserDisc tracks, specifically Jurassic Park

Borisanddoris, how much delay did you use? I used about 4000ms in mkvmerge and that seems to have synced yours and ElDonate 's Cinema DTS soundtrack to the new master but I'm a bad judge. Also, listening to the 5.1 last night and I think you are right that it is a downmix of the DTS-HD MA 7.1. I took the new 3D master, made a 2D MKV and put the Cinema DTS on it, with the new 3D 7.1 remix and the old (from the 2011 disc) 7.1 remix.

FYI the 2D disc that comes with the set is the exact same disc as the 2011 Jurassic Park Blu-ray release.

Close up detail from the "we got Dodgson here" scene:

Even with the small size of this pic, you can see detail missing from the bike, the wood grain on the pole and the surf. Pretty much all the grain has been removed. That is not to say the original is great. It is still a terrible master and like boris said full of EE but I think better then the 3D in detail. Color is a different conversation.

OK, still at work and haven't listened to the DTS 5.1 on the 3D disc to compare it to the Cinema DTS discs but here is a comparison of the surround left channel of the Cinema DTS (top) and the new 3D disc (bottom). I figure; if there were any changes they would be more obvious on the surround channels. I took both DTS tracks and converted them to 6 Wavs using Eac3to.  Even accounting for changes in sound level, they are different.

Just got the disc at work. I have a BD ROM with me and just ripped it to a MKV. There is definitely a regular DTS 5.1 soundtrack. I will check to see what it calls that track when I get home to where my PS3 is:

I do have borisanddoris' DTS track from myspleen with me and will try to sync it. Problem from the start is that the 3D JP transfer has the new Universal logo so at minimum there is an offset needed.
