Solo - Han Movie NON-SPOILER thread
Time

With only 6 months I feel it’s too soon for another Star Wars movie. I don’t feel the same hype for Solo as any other SW movie, and I don’t think it’s just because of the new actor/director controversy. Everyone is still arguing about TLJ. But then we’re gonna have to wait 1.5 years to ep 9, so what’s the point? Star Wars movies should become a Christmas tradition.

May is going to be one hectic month with competition for Disney’s other big blockbuster of the year (avengers) and deadpool 2. Disney should have put this in December where all they’d have to deal with is aquaman.

Hmm, this just occurred to me as well. If I negated TPM altogether - where would Obi and Ani ever be introduced by their names??? The name Skywalker is first heard 2/3 of the way into Clones, though Kenobi is heard very early on. However, I’m going to be doing a lot of cutting of scenes and dialogue in which their names are heard, so it’d be better to have them already established using TPM material.

What if you never mention the name “Skywalker” in ep 1? He is just referred to as anakin. I remember only Grevious, the kid, and Windu using the name “skywalker” in ROTS, they could be cut or trimmed. Maybe have a Jedi say in passing “master skywalker…” where anakin isn’t there to suggest to viewers that there is a skywalker, but we don’t know who he is. You could then watch the movie in chronological order (cut obi-wan’s mention took of “anakin” in ANH and ESB).

You really need to stop saying “Rouge,” since I’m pretty sure RO wasn’t about makeup application. You use it repeatedly in your “7-in-1” thread too; drives me bonkers. ☺

Omg I just saw that. Now I gotta fix all my posts…

As for the edit, these seem very interesting. I would suggest for the prequels cut all of Ep 1 (except as a prologue of you are making those), one mid movie time jump is enough for an episodic movie and it adds nothing to the story.

If you cut Finn taking the tracker (good idea btw, one less thing to worry about, it has no real consequence), how would you go about re-editing his meeting with Rose?

Hhmm, I forgot about this bit. I can see two options:

 1. Finn is really trying to desert out of fear. It contradicts his arc from the first movie, but then again he only stood up to Kylo for Rey (not the resistance). If Finn thought he could actually find and help Rey by escaping the Raddus this might work.

 2. Finn isn’t lying to Rose about cleaning the ships. Insert a clip from TFA with Finn saying “sanitation” to imply he has to clean the escape pods, due to the desperate situation everyone has to help out with the dirty work. This would be much harder to edit though, I don’t remember this scene to well but I believe he acts suspicious in some shots. The scene would end short with Rose not tagging him.

Neither work very well… I would probably chose #1 because it’s easy to edit and is only a minor plot point.

New Star Wars films to be produced and written by D. Benioff & D.B. Weiss (Cancelled)
Time

It would be interesting to see the Old Republic used almost like the MCU, with a seemingly endless amount of films taking place around the same time each building off each other in characters and plots. For example, introducing a Jedi Knight and having a series of films where s/he becomes older and wiser, a film about Republic commandos, a bounty hunter movie, and a movie about a Sith Lord during the same 5 year period. Then they could have a major event such as the arrival of Revan or the Vong, where all the characters team up to stop a common enemy.

I don’t know if I want this though, MCU movies have lost all novelty now and I’d hate to see the same for Star Wars. At the same time this would be the best way imo to keep the franchise alive for decades (which Disney seems to be planning).

How about cutting Finn and Rose (almost) entirely from the movie? Move Finn waking up shortly after Holdo assumes command. Finn’s “where’s Rey?” cuts to Rey arriving on the Supremacy. Canto Bight and the Hyperspace tracker, all gone. Besides just cutting a poor subplot, it also simplifies the story considerably by letting us focus in on the arcs of Rey, Kylo, and Poe.

I know it sounds great to cut out that entire B-plot, but there’s a few problems with it. Like Handman mentioned, DJ needs to betray the Resistance to the First Order. Second, there’s Leia’s tracker that Finn picks up so Rey can fly to Snoke’s Star Destroyer. Third, Finn and Rose have to fly back to Crait in the used First Order ship. So, having them just appear in the final battle without the Canto Bight plot would be jarring from a viewer’s perspective.

I haven’t seen TLJ in over a month now but from what I remember:

 1. The first order could of seen through the resistance’s plan on its own, which would help bring up Hux, or someone could it make seem like Snoke/Kylo sensed it.
 2. Leia has the tracker in the beginning, cutting Finn picking up the tracker would imply it was still with her.
 3. Cut out Finn and Rose arriving on Canto Bight, they could of been on the pods too. It’s not perfect but it could work.

Maybe cut Finn’s kamikazee rub entirely with everyone turning back when Poe says so, but that may turn him into a background character.

My reasoning for cutting the entire subplot is that movie is so crowded. It has four subplots (Rey, Kylo, Finn, Poe) each with their own sets of characters. Compare that to the OT with 3 the max. Once of the subplots needs to be axed, and the Hyperspace Tracker is the least interesting or important of them. It’s only around to give Finn something to do, so why not let him take a backseat and stay asleep for the first half?

Finn could try to escape right before the mutiny, providing us a small intro to Rose. Then they aren’t seen until Crait, with Rose’s “arc” implied as her forgiving him. Poe can still have his mutiny, but he doesn’t mention Finn’s mission (Finn would be in the ship prison).

I think it was BB-8 wearing a wastebasket that tipped 9E off, not the stolen uniforms.

Yeah I grouped the wastebasket and stolen uniforms together as “poor disguises”. I have to wonder why no one noticed Finn, considering he seems to somewhat famous for defying the first order and standing off against Kylo (the stormtrooper from Takodona knew him quite well).

Something dawned on me today: BB-9E is the most competent guy in the first order.

Kyle Ren: Lost to an untrained girl

Hux: Falls prey to Poe’s stalling tatic and then is thrown around by Snoke

Phasma: Need I say more?

Stormtrooper from Takodana: Shot by Han Solo without knowing what hit him

Snoke: Is betrayed by his apprentice in a moment that is very obvious

BB-9E: Was the only one to notice the rebels in their poor disguises, only for his superiors to botch everything up

The Last Jedi: Official Review and Opinions Thread ** SPOILERS **

Maybe Holdo was the first person to think up the kamakizee lightspeed attack. As others have pointed out kamakizee is only useful in certain situations, it makes sense no one would have thought of it until now. They did say she was a brilliant general, and Poe + Hux (both experienced in the military) are confused when she turns the ship around.

What inconsistencies were there? Although I’ve seen it a few times I haven’t got around to buying it on disc yet so I haven’t thoroughly dissected it! I remember actually being impressed that continuity with the movies was so good.

Agree there was no issues except for Anakin not mentioning ashoka in revenge of the sith.

I think that can be overlooked because he did have a few other things to think about at that point in time!

But I suppose if they’d known Ahsoka was going to exist when they made the movie they could’ve put a reference to her in the scene when Anakin is talking to the council, or maybe Palpatine could’ve mentioned her?

Ashoka has left the Jedi Order for quite some time at that point, it makes sense the Jedi wouldn’t mention her. I suppose Palpatine could have mentioned her when listing Anakin’s accomplishments, but considering he never even finished training her I think it fits with the canon just fine. Though Anakin and Obi-Wan were fighting alongside Ashoka days before ROTS for the Siege of Mandalore.

I was never really a fan of the jump to 4 stories per arc, sometimes (droids squad arc) they would drag just because they needed to fit in 4 stories for a single idea. Should of kept it like Season 1, where they focused on self contained stories and only expanded the plot with something major. Umbarra is a great arc, but I can’t distinguish one epsidoe from another. On the other hand, I can distinguish the Geonosis arc because each episode followed something wildly different.

My favorite arc is the Citadel Arc, it represents everything I like about the show. I wish Rogue One was like this (entire movie focusing on the team trying to obtain data from a secure facility). Landing on Point Rain or Grievous Intrigue is my favorite standalone episode. And the final Ashoka and Fives arcs are the most emotional moments in the entire saga for me.

What 'a Star Wars Story' / anthology / spinoff film would you like to see?
Time

A Jar Jar Binks standalone story taking place between ROTJ and TFA, inspired by Logan. Jar Jar is now old and withered, so he goes on a murder spree to save a young Ben Solo. Also Qui-Gon is back from the dead to advertise Taco Bell. Lots of blood and cursing. In the end Jar Jar dies in the greatest moment of fan service.

STAR WARS EPISODE I: Dawn of War (Old Version) (* unfinished project *)
Time

Very interested in this edit, this seems the most radical (and therefore likely the best) prequel edit so far.

As for titles I think the name of SW episodes should roll off the tongue easily. ESB and ROTJ feel like names from an old serial show. This is best accomplished when the title is an action, for example the Jedi return.

No offense to the person who came up with Twilight of the Republic, but the name doesn’t flow imo. It’s an elegent title that conveys the tradegy of the movie. But when compared to the other films, it doesn’t fit as a space adventure.

I think a better name for EP 3 could be something along the lines of “The Empire Rises”. I didn’t find any edit with that

As for EP 1- this might be controversial, but how about just “the Beginning”?

Of course in the end it’s your edit, so you can choose whatever title you want.

Edit: Found a Star Wars ep 2 edit called “Twilight of the Republic” on the fanedit database. Guess that renders my post useless…

 1. When they open the map to luke skywalker: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPBvMsT3prg

 2. Intercut SNL’s Undercover Boss (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaOSCASqLsE) into the film, probably in between Rathars and Maz’s Castle. Keep cutting back to Rey and Finn though as if this is actually part of the movie.

 3. Have Luke Skywalker pop up in the background throughout the film, fading in and out. He is force projecting, but no one notices.

 4. When the resistance arrives to destroy Starkiller Base play Red and Gold squadrons arriving at the Death Star instead. Someone says “wait wrong movie” and switches back. Because ANH and TFA are so similar they’re interchangeable.

Things that you would like to see in Star Wars that have not happened
Time

I think the light/dark sides should have been a Jedi phrase. They saw force users become corrupted by the power of the force and installed a Jedi code which limited how in touch one could become with the force. Because if you grew to powerful with the power it would consume you (unless you take the long and hard path, like Yoda).

On the other hand the Sith simply believe they are using the force to it’s full potential. Some are just in it for conquest, but others (such as Darth Vader) believe they are using the force for the greater good and all the Jedi do is limit their quest for justice. Of course the quick and easy path slowly consumes them. This would have added a lot more depth to the dark side, with multiple beliefs and orders. It also would have benefited the PT (and ST with Kylo Ren) tremendously.

I mean seriously, who in their right minds thinks the “dark side” are the good guys?

Vader- a 7 in 1 edit of the Star Wars Saga (Released)
Time

Imgur
If the name has already been taken I’m sorry. I looked around and didn’t find any edit called just “Vader” but I did find ones with Vader in the name.

Hello everyone! I’ve been viewing this forum for quite some time but haven’t had any incentive to join until now. I hope to become a film editor someday and for practice have done some fanedits of movies, mostly Star Wars. A couple of months ago I had an idea for a very ambitious project, and now that I’ve completed it I’d like to share it with others.

This is a 7 in 1 edit of the entire Star Wars saga, chronicling around the rise and fall of Darth Vader. TFA is the only film that is not used. The final cut comes to 3 hours 15 minutes (excluding a 2-minute custom closing credits). Overall ROTS gets the most screentime, followed by ESB, AOTC, and ROTJ. ANH gets around 20 minutes, RO around 10, and TPM 2. I have tried to cut the films in such a way that could be seen and understood by someone who has never seen Star Wars before. The edit tells a coherent story with no obvious plotholes.

The story is told with two plotlines- the rise of Vader and the fall of Vader. The rise of Vader (Anakin’s story) consists of the PT while the fall of Vader is Rouge One followed by the OT. These two plotlines are intercut like the Godfather Part II, signified by the flash sound effect from Lost. The ability to intercut allows me to jump ahead an undisclosed amount of time without it feeling jarring. Each “block” of the story is 5-20 minutes long.

Here’s a rundown for how the movie plays out:

Vader (Rogue One): Director Krennic goes to Vader’s castle and meets the dark lord. This is a perfect introduction to Darth Vader, with his shadow towering over Krennic. In this scene we also learn about the Death Star, a central plotpoint. In this edit there is only one Death Star.

Anakin (AOTC): Obi-Wan and Anakin are to protect Padme. It is painfully obvious that Anakin is in love with Padme, but without the forbidden love dynamic introduced we can assume that Obi-Wan picks up on the obvious and is helping Anakin with his advice. It’s still AOTC, but some small changes help the scene and provide us with a solid introduction to Anakin.

Vader (Rogue One): Krennic travels to Scariff to dig up dirt on Tarkin (I felt this was much better for several reasons: first, it shows he deserved to die later because he chooses to come here, second Tarkin seems surprised when he hears that Krennic is on Scariff, and third to show that most of the Empire besides Vader is corrupt). While this is happening, the rebels suddenly attack! Because this is from Vader’s perspective, the rebels are a surprise. A vastly shortened Battle of Scariff (9 mins) takes place ending with the Death Star destroying the Citadel (displaying its power) and Vader showing how badass he is.

Anakin (AOTC): Anakin and Obi-Wan guard Padme at night. We hear about Anakin’s nightmares with his mother and their differing opinions on politics. The assassin attacks and the two Jedi bolt into action, but the assassin quickly escapes. It’s clear that Padme is not safe on Coruscant.

Vader (ANH): We’re just where we left off with Vader chasing the blockade runner. All scenes featuring R2 and 3PO are cut, keeping the plan’s location a mystery.

Anakin (AOTC): Palpatine is introduced as a firm believer in the Republic and friend of the Jedi. He suggests that a Jedi protects Senator Amidala. Later the Jedi Council decides to send Anakin alone on a mission to escort the senator to Naboo. Through a couple of scenes Anakin makes successfully advances on Padme and eventually kisses her on the lake. This is the end of the romance subplot, the audience can assume the logical progression of things.

Vader (ANH): Death Star conference room, Stormtroopers find someone was at the pod, Leia interrogation. This segment is focused on the might of the Empire.

Anakin (AOTC): Anakin and Padme go to Tatooine where they look for Anakin’s mother. The first hints of the dark side appear.

Vader (ANH): Following her interrogation, the Empire learns that Leia lied about the location of the rebel base (the destruction of Alderaan does not happen, mainly because I was short of time and we already saw what the Death Star can do at Scariff). But right before her execution a freighter enters the Death Star. The princess rescue is from the Empire’s perspective, with “jump scares” of the rebels. Vader confronts an old Obi-Wan Kenobi and kills him. Right as the freighter escapes with the princess, Tarkin remarks about the tracking beacon.

Anakin (TPM/AOTC): Shots from the invasion of Naboo are repurposed in a montage showing the Separatist attacks- the negotiations have failed. The senate responds with granting the chancellor emergency powers and the grand army of the republic is formed. The Clone Wars have begun.

Vader (ESB): Twenty years after the creation of the Republic Army, the Imperial Army readies to strike at the rebel base and seize the death star plans. The Battle of Hoth occurs, and the rebels are given their own share of screentime to humanize them. During the evacuation we are introduced to Han Solo, who narrowly escapes with Princess Leia. Han is our main “hero” going forward, with the OT segments now intercutting between him and Vader.

Anakin (ROTS): The Battle over Coruscant. This is mainly a fun sequence that solidifies Anakin and Obi-Wan’s friendship. We see hints of darkness in the Dooku fight, but also Anakin’s bright side with the Grievous fight.

Vader (ESB): The Emperor reveals to Vader that he has a son, Luke Skywalker. Vader now wants to turn Luke to the dark side. However, Vader is confused that Luke is alive.

Anakin (ROTS): Anakin learns that Padme is pregnant, but suddenly has the same nightmares from his mother. Anakin seeks council with Master Yoda, who urges Anakin to let go of what he fears to lose.

Vader (ESB): Vader hires bounty hunters to track down the Millennium Falcon. The Empire then catches up to Han, who tricks them through a serious of maneuvers. We are now given equal time between Vader and Han. At the end Boba follows the Falcon away.

Anakin (ROTS): Palpatine askes Anakin to be his personal representative on the council, and a back and forth dynamic begins between the chancellor and council. While this is happening Anakin slowly loses faith in the Jedi way, which climaxes once Obi-Wan leaves to hunt Grievous. Anakin confronts Palpatine and we learn that he is a Sith Lord.

Vader (ESB): The Falcon arrives at Cloud City where we meet Lando- who proceeds to walk the rebels right into a trap. The likeable heroes are tortured while Lando regrets his decision. Just as Leia declares his love for him, Han is put into carbonite. This is the last we see of Han. The audience is now fully onboard with the rebel cause and hates Vader for killing off the scruffiest nerf herder in the galaxy.

Anakin (ROTS): Mace confronts Palpatine (the duel is cut). Anakin and Padme have their twilight scene and Anakin decides to go the Senate, where he ultimately turns to the dark side. Things only get worse from here.

Vader (ESB): Luke Skywalker arrives on Bespin, taking Vader’s bait. They duel. Meanwhile Lando flips sides and helps the rebels escape. Luke loses the duel with Vader and learns the truth about his father.

Anakin (ROTS): Order 66.

Vader (ESB): Vader pleas Luke to join him and rule the galaxy as father and son, but Luke refuses and jumps off. Leia rescues Luke at the last minute and they escape Bespin after a tense sequence involving the hyperdrive. With Luke our new hero, how can he possibly defeat the Vader?

Anakin (ROTS): Anakin goes to Mustafar and kills the Separtist leaders while Palpatine announces the creation of the Galactic Empire.

Vader (ROTJ / ANH): The Emperor travels to the Death Star and regroups with Vader while Luke seeks Yoda for guidance. Yoda warns him of what is to come and then dies, making Luke the last jedi. Meanwhile the rebels regroup at Yavin IV and obtain the Death Star plans in preparation for a final battle.

Anakin (ROTS): Padme goes to Mustafar, but Anakin is too far gone. Obi-Wan confronts his former student and they begin to duel, but the duel is cut short.

Vader (ROTJ): Luke allows himself to be captured, just as the Emperor predicted. Here we learn Luke’s plan to turn Vader back to the light. As Luke leaves, Vader thinks back for a final time.

Anakin (ROTS): It’s towards the end of the duel. After some clashes Obi-Wan obtains the high ground, and Anakin is defeated. The most emotional scene in the PT follows before ending on a sour note for Anakin- or should I say Vader.

Vader (ROTJ / ANH): The 40-minute finale. The rebels attack the Death Star as it approaches the base. Meanwhile Luke tries to turn Vader to the light side while resisting his own temptations. We get an emotional conclusion to the entire film as Anakin gets revenge on Palpatine before dying. The final scene is Vader’s funeral, witnessed by the last jedi.

Stick around after the end for custom closing credits.

This edit is by no means perfect. I’m fairly new to editing and a few of the cuts come off a bit choppy. But when I had this idea I couldn’t help myself but try it out, and I think the movie plays well. This is an edit like no other.

Below is a short preview, showing a timejump and the Death Star break in. Since the story takes place from Vader’s perspective, the rebels are not shown. This level of “cutting as much as possible” is present in all the major battles, for example the Battle of Scariff goes from 40 minutes to 9.

I own all 8 movies (TFA soundtrack appears at one point, can you figure out where?) on DVD. The OT footage for the edit is special editions 😦
