The Rise of Skywalker box office results: predictions and expectations
Time

DrDre said:

The road to final installment of the ST has been quite different from the OT and PT. Many people have argued, that TLJ feels more like the end of a trilogy than a middle act. Given the waning interest in Star Wars in general, my guess is, that TROS will end up near RO levels, which was also a December release. The fact that TROS is the conclusion to the Skywalker saga might draw in more people, but given that interest is at an all time low, I think TROS just breaking the $1B mark is not at all an unlikely scenario.

DrDre, I have to say, bravo. When this thread started everyone - including myself - thought you were crazy for predicting the movie wouldn’t surpass TLJ, let alone barely break a billion. But you stuck to your opinion, and wow, it proved true!

Unusual Sequel Trilogy Radical Redux Ideas Thread
Time

So I be wandering youtube and I run into this wonderful little fanfilm:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owrmLeX20CY

Not of the best quality, but a fun, uncanon idea that serves its purpose. But naturally, I started thinking about fanediting.

I wonder if we could make this scene “Kylo’s training” in TLJ. The moment Snoke zaps him with lightning, we could cut to a trimmed version of this: planted by Snoke, taking place inside Ben’s mind. It would show how Kylo uses Vader as an idol, and the ending (where he kills Vader) could symbolize “letting the past die”.

For edits meant to be seamless, this wouldn’t work: the costumes are cheesy, the audio is all off, and the choreography pretty boring. But for more radical edits I thought it might be something to throw out.

You’re not meant to stop and think and try to make sense of it all Hal 😉

You jest, but it’s true. That’s the way Star Wars has always been. It’s emotional, not logical. None of it makes any sense logically and if you think about the viability of certain plot elements in those terms, it falls apart. So no, you’re not meant to make sense of it all.

That’s not the way it used to be. The OT makes sense, every action is justified.

The walkers don’t make sense. Neither does the two-dimensional space flight. Nor the idea of a giant slug being sexually attracted to humanoid women.

Apples and oranges. There’s a slight suspension of disbelief with the original three movies. TROS is complete nonsense by comparison. Palpatine is resurrected with no explanation. The Sith Eternal somehow create a fleet bigger than the First Order with no explanation. The Sith fleet can’t leave Exegol even though apparently ships have been coming and going for decades. A gigantic piece of the Death Star survives the explosion in ROTJ and re-entry through an atmosphere with no explanation. Ochi for some reason has a dagger that is shaped to fit along the skyline of the wreckage, and for some reason it has Sith writing, telling him where to find the holocron, even though he already knows where it is. Did he make the dagger? Did he find it? Who knows, cause the movie never tells us. Hux saves Poe and Finn, despite not having any real reason to do so. I could go on and on.

Need I answer every question? Ok…

 1. Palpatine has a Sith Cult caring for him. I would imagine this same cult brought him from the Death Star (which we can see survived in part).

 2. Palpatine has the Empire’s resources while he as building the fleet. Probably with the intention of using them for the Empire before it died. The First Order was the remnants of Imperial Officers in the unknown regions, they didn’t have the same resources.

 3. The fleet might be big but it has a skeleton crew. Hence the need to leave by transmitter. This wasn’t a problem when there weren’t x-wings attacking.

 4. Physics has never mattered before: the Death Star can explode in any which way it wants.

 5. The dagger seems to have been a route for Ochi to reach Exogel. This makes sense because how else would be reach the hidden planet. Stuff like this shouldn’t be explained in flashbacks. It diminishes the story’s focus.

 6. Hux dislikes Ren. He wants him to lose power so he can take over. This is clearly established throughout the trilogy.

The point of this isn’t to answer random plot holes but to show the story is logical, it just requires a great deal of thinking and filling in blanks afterwards. The pacing is rushed to tell the full narrative. This fine by me if it means telling a more engaging story. No one wants to suddenly dive into a wookiepedia article as Palpatine explains all his friends on Kuat Drive Yards, which then have no relevance to the plot. What matters is he’s back and the galaxy needs to stop him.

I only object when stories like these are inconsistent with their own rules. I don’t care whether anything within is ‘realistic’ to our world.

I had a problem with SKB’s firing being visible the way it was since it flies in the face of a basic understanding of light within SW. The discrepancy is evident when one looks at the hilarious official explanation.

Here, jumping in and out of light speed would be expected to look like skipping a stone on a pond. It might be in a straight line, or perhaps alternating a number of directions, but this scene implies they are more or less teleporting. This is baffling when placed alongside any and everything else we’ve ever gotten about hyperspace.

By all means, and please understand me, I welcome space slugs, mysterious gravity sources, sucking up the sun gradually until it fades to night while surviving on the planet, blowing up from the Star you sucked up and turning into a planet-sized Star that looks the same, etc. However this fictional realm works, cool. But I don’t like when it breaks its own rules.

Yes, that’s exactly my problem with this scene. I don’t care about dumb nitpicks like “Why would the bombers use gravity, it’s not realistic.” But when the movie blatantly breaks its own rules by having lightspeed travel take seconds instead of hours, that’s when I draw the line. I don’t know, maybe no one cares anymore. Based on some of the comments here, it seems like some people want Star Wars to devolve into another dumb action franchise. I miss the OT.

There are many reasons.

 1. Some new hyperspace was invented, and most of the ships have since upgraded considering how fast things are now.
 2. The planets are all very close, possibly in the same system.
 3. The scene isn’t proportional to time, and it actually did take an hour or so to jump from planet to planet. They just cut it out of the movie because it made for a poor action scene (as seen in TESB).

And I hate to say this but Star Wars has always been a dumb action franchise. Better than most, but still. The only real moment this went beyond was when Luke used nonviolence to redeem Vader. Everything else has been arguably formulaic when we look at the Samurai and Western films of the past: even Empire’s “big theme” is just “don’t be a hothead” which is altogether pretty standard.

No one is going to agree with me on this, but I absolutely love the lightspeed skipping. It’s just a fun idea that leads to some really cool visuals, while also following up a major development from last film (lightspeed tracking), and showing us what the guy who can “fly anything” can do with the Falcon (which is a nice character beat for him and Rey to argue about).

Truthfully I only have two issues with it - one, the scene goes by so quick that by the time you figure out what’s even happening, it’s over, and two, it’s never used again! It seemed like a set up for some bigger sequence but never got paid off.

Agreed! And those planets were all very unique!

Regarding how much it makes sense, what if all those planets exist in the same system?

In terms of “filler” episodes…

I don’t think I would consider any of the episodes “filler”. Even Chapter 5, despite not setting anything up, provided lots of insight into world as well as just a fun adventure.

I actually find too much focus on an overarching plot a sign of a “filler episode”. Let me explain. Way too many shows focus on building mysteries and teasing the audience, to the point that’s the entire show.

A good example would be Stranger Things 3. I was bored watching most of it, and I kept wondering when the plot would actually start. Because the first 75% is just slowly teasing the ending, when I would rather they either shorten the season or add new storylines to make each episode somewhat unique.

This is why I like Mandalorian so much: each episode brings something new to the table.

The Mandalorian - a general discussion thread - * SPOILERS *
Time

Finally got around to watching this (got Disney+ for Christmas, had to play catch up).

Wow! What a great show. I had heard good things before watching and my expectations were met: this is a solid and original Star Wars adventure. I’d call it the best thing Disney has done with the brand so far.

My favorite episode was Chapter 6, I also liked Chapters 2,4, and 7 a lot. Chapter 8 might be my least favorite. I’m very confused with the Moff’s plan especially after that great cliffhanger in 7. The whole chapter seemed more interested individual scenes rather than plot.

But overall, this has still been a fantastic addition to Star Wars and I am excited for Season 2. I’m also hyped for the Siege of Mandalore being shown on-screen this February for TCW.

The thing is they missed an opportunity with the Star Destroyers. Because of the size of the fleet, they could have had each stationed in every system, waiting to fire. Wouldn’t that have been interesting? If we saw the “people” rising up to fight across the galaxy, rather than just on Exegol? It would have made the pay off (Star Destroyers falling over various planets) make more sense.

Speaking of, what a massive whiff to not have one of the prequel planets in that montage. They literally had three planets (Bespin, Endor, Jakku), it was right there for them to do one from each trilogy.

Yes. The “Battle of Exogel” was a pretty lame final fight for the saga: a galaxy-wide fight would have been pretty cool, and provide natural fanservice for every star wars movie (ex: show Naboo, Kamino, Kashyyk, Tatooine, Bespin, Endor, Jakku, and Canto Bight as having their own battles).

Unusual Sequel Trilogy Radical Redux Ideas Thread

INCOMING: LONG POST
I’ve thought long and hard about to fanedit the Sequel Trilogy. Before TROS I was hoping to create my own radical edit that brought together the themes of all three movies and make them equal to the OT for me. But with TROS, I’ve realized the ST really has no point, because it all ends in the same spot as Episode Six. We don’t need three more episodes to the Skywalker Saga.

But I don’t want to just abandon these movies. There’s individual moments that are great! So after a long, while thinking, here’s how I’d fanedit the ST.

IMG

Instead of a full episode to the Skywalker Saga, this would be more an anthology, to be viewed after the happy ending of Episode Six.

“At last the work of generations is complete. The great error is corrected. The day of victory is at hand. The Day of revenge. The day of the Sith!”

The edit opens with Palpatine’s message, followed by the awakening of a fleet of Star Destroyers. One jumps to Coruscant, the New Republic Capital, and destroys it with a single blast.

IMG

Cut to black.

The “long time ago” text becomes a Blade Runner title crawl (like Solo):

The unthinkable has occurred.
The New Republic is dead,
destroyed by the remnants of
the Old Empire: the FIRST ORDER.

Led by the Emperor’s secret
apprentice, Snoke, and Kylo Ren,
the child of Han and Leia Skywalker,
the First Order commands a fleet
of mobile planet killers: the
ultimate technological terror.

Few oppose them. They are the
RESISTANCE, a final stand against
evil. But they cannot win this
fight alone. They need hope.

And so as the Skywalker Saga
comes to a close, it would appear
the fate of the galaxy lies in
the hands of the last jedi:
the missing LUKE SKYWALKER…

IMG

Forgive me. I feel it again. The call to the light.

Our first real scene is Kylo Ren and Vader. This immediately connects us to the rest of the saga and Vader. We also see Kylo’s struggle. Kylo leaves the room and we instantly transition to the opening of TFA - the Stormtroopers prepare their assault over Jakku.

IMG

Poe Dameron acquires the map to Luke Skywalker. TFA then plays out in its normal manner: Poe is caught, Finn defects, and BB8 calls into the hands of a random scavenger. All references to Rey’s parents being important will be cut: she is a nobody in this version, designed as an insult to Ben’s obsession with family heritage.

The Rathar Scene would be cut, but everything else in The Force Awakens remains as is up until the third act. Starkiller is cut and replaced with Kylo Ren’s castle.

IMG

This would be the hardest part of the edit to pull off, but an overall cold tint would be applied to these exterior shots and a normal ice planet be used for establishing planet shots. The effect would be removing the ultra Death Star from the Sequels.

Finn, who has been trying to run the entire time, leads a rescue mission for Rey. Han is killed in the process, which Kylo believes will cement his turn to the dark side, but he is wrong, and Rey accepts her destiny with the force and defeats him in battle.

IMG

And all of a sudden we are in the land of The Last Jedi. Thankfully this movie takes place right after the one before, so unlike TROS, it is easier to link them up. Both Kylo and Rey meet disappointment with their “masters”. Luke, from which the entire crux of the story was built on, refuses to help, and Kylo’s descent into darkness only makes him more conflicted.

The whole Resistance subplot isn’t shown at all. Keep in mind up to this point, the main characters have been: Rey, Finn, and Kylo. No need for minor character Poe to be upgraded to character arc in the third act. And Finn was just taken out of the story with his medical injuries, the injuries will remain while the Resistance is being chased, and he is only seen again in the “rocks” moment on Crait, where Rey and Finn embrace.

IMG

One random idea I have is for instead of Leia suddenly using the force, when she had no show of it beforehand, it be Ben who saves her life. I think this would add a real level of humanity to Kylo.

So the movie is all building to Rey and Kylo meeting Snoke. In this edit, the crawl will establish him as the Secret Apprentice to Palpatine, sorta a backup plan in case Vader went awol. There’s no reason to explain much more. Snoke is a stand-in for “evil emperor”, and I think this works better in an individual epilogue than a full episodic trilogy because it doesn’t need to explain everything. It can be symbolic of society constantly facing the same demons, without any of the episodic “fun fun fun” subplots being intertwined.

IMG

Luke is redeemed by Yoda in a final teaching moment of Star Wars, and suddenly, the Epilogue has more meaning. Yes, the Empire is theoretically at its strongest, but that does not mean we need to curl up and die. The meaning of the Jedi has never been about saving the galaxy, but providing hope for the galaxy. This would really contextualize Eps 1-6 not as this huge event but one of many Star Wars, and give the Epilogue a purpose in the overall story.

Kylo doesn’t have to be redeemed. The ending would be more ambiguous. The First Order won the fight, but the Resistance won the Skywalker Saga. The final scene of TROS would be moved up to show Rey, a nobody, taking up the Skywalker mantra, not Kylo. But the last scene in the Epilogue, imo, should be the broom boy, intercut with shots of Young Anakin, Luke and Rey all watching the stars.

IMG

I know a lot of these themes are presented in The Last Jedi, but I think an Epilogue Anthology would suit the story better. For one, having it be Episode 8 implies Episode 9 is going to end the war in a different way when it doesn’t. I also didn’t like the Resistance in TLJ. But the bigger issue I have is episodic films are expected to be continuations of the story, and Ep 7 doesn’t really take up where you would expect. A more introspective spin-off/epilogue would accomplish the themes of TLJ better.

I really love this. Is this something you’re interested in actually implementing?

Yes! I’m a bit busy irl atm, but I wouldn’t mind doing this in a couple months!

Is it weird I found the planet killing Star Destroyers logical within the lore? It feels a natural progression from Death Star, not unlike the evolution and mass production of atomic weapons.

I find Starkiller Base more egregious because it’s big thing is “it’s bigger”. It becomes so big it’s unbelievable, and it’s a very stupid concept to make yourself a bigger target after two failed Death Stars.

In terms of making it a truly different planet, you could add unique plantlife or other structures in the background or recolor the sky using EbSynth. A green sky would be interesting. Especially against purple sand. However, I feel like the sand would be an absolute nightmare to recolor. At most, you could maybe tweak the color balance slightly, but that’s it.

Oh and I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: make Ilum (Starkiller Base) a snowy volcano. It’s an idea that appeared in concept art and would help resolve the issue of the fissure that splits Rey and Kylo once you remove the “destroy the superweapon” part of the film. Just add lava flowing to some of the wide shots and voila!

Yeah the Art of TFA is very inspiring, pitty they didn’t incorporate a lot of the unique stuff in there. As for Jakku I think sprinkling crashed Star destroyers/Mon Calla cruisers etc wherever possible would give it a look that is more distinct and evocative.

Wasn’t Jakku originally going to be a wet junkyard?

So many missed opportunities.

Yes, a physical fight. They fight somewhere (some planet, doesn’t matter where) as a flashback, just like the flashbacks to Luke’s Jedi temple destruction.
We don’t see the end of the fight, but understand that it was inconclusive, and the reason why Luke retired to his island.

Interesting but very ambitious, any idea on how to go about it?

Anyone have any idea how Ivan’s edit is coming along?

I doubt he’ll ever complete it, so in that case just a few random shots of the fight strung together should suffice for a flashback.

Exciting! A bit disappointed we’re stuck in the Rule of Two, but I actually approve the decision to take place not too far beyond TPM. Seeing the galaxy in nearly the same spot thousands of years before the Skywalker Saga was a quirk that always irritated me. So this sounds like a unique adaption of the Old Republic!

Also looks like they’ll be headed the MCU direction with a series of inter-connected films telling one story arc. Tbh, I think this is a better model than trilogies because it gives us more time with the characters. So count me aboard the hype train!

I don’t buy it. I could see Disney trimming certain parts of the edit to better please fans, but the anti-DC part is total BS. Disney would much rather Star Wars do well than sacrifice it to see DC do bad.

MAYBE during the discussion the source got angry and said something along the lines of, “you know what? I bet this is all to spite DC!”. And then it was misinterpreted.
