Can’t argue with that.
Sorry to go off topic, but Nev with the TFA edit almost completed were you planning on doing you own take on TLJ as well or was this a one off edit?
After seeing what you’re doing here I just think the are areas in TLJ that could be edited to portray Rey moving further to the dark side that other editors haven’t attempted in TLJ.
If I do, it won’t be for a while since I’m planning on taking a break after this one’s done. It also won’t be as extensive, but it isn’t for a lack of ideas. Even with the basis of TFA, Kylo now has a much stronger reason for believing that she will turn and join him at the end of the film. Dark Rey has a lot of potential, especially since, ahem, TROS.
I took out the voices because it felt a bit too much, a bit too handholding, like ‘remember this thing that just happened!?’ The whispers are placed at two or three places previously in the film, so I wanted to focus on that as a sort of retroactive reveal as to what it was. I could make them sound a bit more Sith-y, but at what point is it too obvious she’s channeling Palps?
Oh, I just noticed something interesting in this movie, maybe it’s been pointed out before but I don’t recall. It concerns whether or not it was part of the original plan for TFA to have the Starkiller fire at the end, and there’s potentially some evidence to suggest that the firing at least took place at some other time.

Presumably, Phasma was supposed to be part of the Maz Castle attack, but right before this in the theatrical version we see her behind Hux as the Starkiller prepares to fire. There are several possibilities for what happened here. Maybe they never intended to have her at the battle and this was just a promo shoot. Maybe they cut her from the battle for some reason and decided to put her digitally into the Starkiller firing to have some explanation for why she was absent, keeping the Starkiller firing in the same place. Or maybe there were significant differences between the shooting script and the final product, where they originally intended the weapon firing to be at a later time but switched gears and filmed pickups of the actors reacting to the Hosnian destruction from Maz’s castle.
I guess what I’m saying is that the Restructured change works a little too well to be coincidental.
Okay, I’ve put a subtle effect over the three shots of the fight where her eyes are noticeable. 😃

It’s true that this is rather uncharted territory as far as canon goes, but Rey’s inner darkness is one of the primary reasons for this edit. It think it’s justified due to this edit making it seem like Han, Chewie, and Finn have all just been destroyed along with the Republic. It adds a ton of tension to the end of the film since Rey is resorting to the Dark Side to defeat Kylo Ren whereas it was implied that she used the light side in the original, an uninteresting option since it telegraphed that she was simply more powerful than her opponent, regardless of his momentary weakness. The edit of Snoke saying that he has sensed an awakening comes directly after this moment as well, so it’s very clear that Rey’s power is what he senses, and his ability to bridge her mind with that of Kylo later on adds even more evidence to this thought. Finally, Luke’s rejection of Rey makes a ton more sense if she has already gone so far to the Dark Side to achieve her goals. Rey’s plea with the saber at the end of TFA now has the extra drama of understanding that she is a dangerous student, something borne out in TLJ and beyond.
As far as VFX shots go, I have just two left to do:
-Delete casual Resistance officer in Leia Mourning
-Tweak Rey and Finn staring at Starkiller Firing
No, that makes sense. More random violence and mess, more shouting and explosions, less military blaster fire.
The older comparisons seem to still be broken. For example: http://www.framecompare.com/image-compare/screenshotcomparison/WK7NNN8X
Do you use the https://screenshotcomparison.com/ website to host the images? I know they routinely clear their database and wipe out old links.
The Biomes and vehicles footage is available in 1080 and 4K…
“I know…somehow…I’ve always known.”
“That’s because of your Midichlorians, Leia.”
“…”
“Midichlorians are microscopic lifeforms that live inside your cells, telling you the will of the Force.”
“Like bacteria? Luke, what does this have to do with…”
“…But it’s also an energy field. Have you heard of the double slit experiment? Nevermind, it’s not a story your fake parents would have told you.”
^Love this meme format.
I really never had a problem with Hux being made a farce of, or “they fly now” (yes it’s corny, but that’s Star Wars, right?)
It wasn’t until I found this forum that I realized so many people HATE that “They fly now” joke. I will never understand it. lol.
I think the fact that it was in the first clip they released from the film didn’t help! People were kinda set to hate this thing regardless, and the joke became a bit of a pre-emptive flashpoint for that.
That’s exactly it, the joke was just the first really goofy bit of the film people saw so it devolved into vicious mockery in the comments. In all fairness it is a pretty brainless line.
I’ll probably try doing a subtle effect during a few later shots where we can see her eyes, for continuity’s sake.

Video updated again. This one gives a bit more brightness to the yellow to prevent the eyes from looking brown, while also retaining the red rim. The whole effect is applied at 80% strength so it’s still more subtle than the first iteration. I’m pretty happy with it, personally.
I’ve tweaked the eye effect to be more in line with the prequel version - a slightly red iris rim with yellow interior. It’s also more subtle. With this more subtle version I’m not sure it would read well on anything further away than this extreme closeup, so it may be unnoticeable if placed on the entire fight.

I can certainly do a blended version. 😃
I thought about that afterwards, and it might not be too terrible a workload since we can only clearly see her eyes in a few shots. On the other hand, it might be better to leave it as just that brief moment so that people don’t think ‘Oh well Rey is just evil forever now’, and a brief moment of power could be enough to both rattle Kylo and allow Rey to win without realizing she tapped so deeply into the Dark Side.
I dunno, what does everyone think?
Thanks!
If that was part 2, here’s part 1 with the end of Rey and Kylo’s battle:

This includes the Sith Eyes, Kylo’s fixed scar, and the smaller chasm opening.
Just saw that one today, it was really fun!
The song Blackout slaps.
^Obi-Wan is so paranoid living on Tatooine, he arms himself with three lightsabers. 😉
Not only is he discovering the way to immortality, he knows more about the Sith’s true weakness than any other person in the galaxy.
What I’ve found helpful in creating distant sounds is to throw an echo/reverb filter on them, decrease the volume, and bring them into the surrounding speakers. Working in 5.1, it helps to bring it out of the center speaker and into the left and right, and in many cases the rear speakers as well for distant sounds that would echo across the landscape.

I’ve replaced the video with the new version, which has a more normal speed establishing shot with some glow in the chasm followed by an extended closeup of the new chasm, then more glow in the last establishing shot. Audio has been tweaked as well.
Honestly, I don’t think he needs to say anything at the end of the scene since it feels very OT special edition to put words to a wordless sacrifice, I’d just put the single word vocalizations at the beginning of the scene so that his last word isn’t ‘ow’. 😉
Yeah, it wold need to be very brief, and for the noble sacrifice to remain strong he shouldn’t ask for Rey’s forgiveness. I think some ‘Rey!’ and ‘No!’ would work while he’s crawling toward her, just to indicate that he’s vocalizing more in this scene, then have one brief line after she comes back to life. I’m thinking in order to tie it into his character and maybe provide some closure to his ‘I will finish what Vader started’ bit, have him say ‘It’s finished’ or ‘It’s done’ right before she says ‘Ben’.
Having this note of vague finality before he dies might also help to offset the awkwardness of his abrupt death.
If it’s just the odd word can’t they be found within the movies?
The Crackling Saber is on hold as I got a lot of negative feedback with various scenes. The effect changes so much between day/night and with distant and close-up shots so it takes a lot of tweaking. I just don’t have that amount of time to invest in such a consuming thing atm as I’m trying to get through the other 19 shots I’m working on, plus my computer keeps overheating every time I use After effects or Premiere Pro for a long period which isn’t helping at ALL!
It’s a real shame this isn’t working for you. For the record, I thought it was looking really good in every iteration you posted.
