The Force Awakens: Starlight (V1.1 Released!)
Time

Well, thank you for trying. I’m fine with leaving the music the same at the end of the fight, the Sith Eyes alone are enough for me 😃

I’ve uploaded workprint 107 with the latest changes, as well as conforming it to Starlight Standard per the first post. This means the journey to Luke is reinstated with Restructured changes, as well as the first R2 scene to match. The workprint uses the same link as before. Here are most of the differences from the previous version:

-Fix BB-8’s transition to the first Starkiller shot to be smoother.
-Smooth visuals of Snoke’s line ‘Then it is time…prepare the weapon’.
-Improve audio of transition from Han and Leia’s conversation to Hux’s speech.
-Fix duplication of sound effects as Rey struggles in her restraints, lower sound of whispers slightly.
-Make music louder during Starkiller Destruction.
-Lighten second shot of Finn’s crash landing.
-Add Sith Eyes to further three shots of Rey’s fight.

After more consideration, the Starkiller beam shot will probably remain as-is unless anyone feels strongly enough to change it, in which case I can provide the source clips. The only other change to make is the acknowledgements in the end credits.

One volunteer has offered to do a final quality control review and noting timecodes for color and audio issues. If anyone else notices issues, please do leave a comment so I can fix it. 😃

Info: Fixing the TFA and TLJ Deleted Scenes
Time

I just checked the flythroughs video, no dice.

I think the dice hanging shot is salvageable though, if I can find a good image of the Falcon cockpit exterior with which to replace the crew and camera. This is the closest I’ve been able to find, though it’s not perfect and is still rather distant for these purposes. It matches the blue lighting of the interior though, so that’s a bonus.

If there’s still need of a closeup to show that these are in fact dice, it would be a good thing for MR to film and could probably just use the shot from TLJ with Luke’s hand replaced with another.

IMO, anyone who has shown interest in the project has helped to keep me on track so your contribution has definitely been appreciated 😃

How long would it (some musical composition) need to be?

Well, the usable section from the TLJ cue is less than 30 seconds, but the duration of the fight from the Sith eyes attack to the crack in the ground is almost exactly 60 seconds.

Yeah, I’m trying to stick to music from the film wherever possible and I think I tried the darker music and felt that it wouldn’t work as well.

I think this piece of music from Rey’s TLJ force meditation would work really well.

Part of this does fit the action, buuuuut it’s too short to cover the end of the fight.

I agree that the music could be better, but I just haven’t been able to find an ideal replacement.

With the edit reaching its final stages, it will soon be time to finalize the list of contributors for the end credits. For this I’m listing everyone who contributed to this thread in any way, even if just asking for a link, and listing everyone who has helped outside of the thread in PMs, whether by directly assisting the project or providing a review of a workprint.

There are plenty of people who contributed to Restructured but who haven’t visited here, so for those I’m thinking of just putting a general thank you and direction to Hal’s project. As well there will be a general thank you to all members of OriginalTrilogy.com for being so wonderful 😃

So here is the probably incomplete list, organized by first post in the thread. If there’s an error or you would like to be removed from the list for any reason just let me know, and if you wish to be added leave a comment below and I will be contractually obligated to oblige 😉

Sorry to go off topic, but Nev with the TFA edit almost completed were you planning on doing you own take on TLJ as well or was this a one off edit?

After seeing what you’re doing here I just think the are areas in TLJ that could be edited to portray Rey moving further to the dark side that other editors haven’t attempted in TLJ.

If I do, it won’t be for a while since I’m planning on taking a break after this one’s done. It also won’t be as extensive, but it isn’t for a lack of ideas. Even with the basis of TFA, Kylo now has a much stronger reason for believing that she will turn and join him at the end of the film. Dark Rey has a lot of potential, especially since, ahem, TROS.

I took out the voices because it felt a bit too much, a bit too handholding, like ‘remember this thing that just happened!?’ The whispers are placed at two or three places previously in the film, so I wanted to focus on that as a sort of retroactive reveal as to what it was. I could make them sound a bit more Sith-y, but at what point is it too obvious she’s channeling Palps?

Oh, I just noticed something interesting in this movie, maybe it’s been pointed out before but I don’t recall. It concerns whether or not it was part of the original plan for TFA to have the Starkiller fire at the end, and there’s potentially some evidence to suggest that the firing at least took place at some other time.

Phasma Maz Castle

Presumably, Phasma was supposed to be part of the Maz Castle attack, but right before this in the theatrical version we see her behind Hux as the Starkiller prepares to fire. There are several possibilities for what happened here. Maybe they never intended to have her at the battle and this was just a promo shoot. Maybe they cut her from the battle for some reason and decided to put her digitally into the Starkiller firing to have some explanation for why she was absent, keeping the Starkiller firing in the same place. Or maybe there were significant differences between the shooting script and the final product, where they originally intended the weapon firing to be at a later time but switched gears and filmed pickups of the actors reacting to the Hosnian destruction from Maz’s castle.

I guess what I’m saying is that the Restructured change works a little too well to be coincidental.

Okay, I’ve put a subtle effect over the three shots of the fight where her eyes are noticeable. 😃

It’s true that this is rather uncharted territory as far as canon goes, but Rey’s inner darkness is one of the primary reasons for this edit. It think it’s justified due to this edit making it seem like Han, Chewie, and Finn have all just been destroyed along with the Republic. It adds a ton of tension to the end of the film since Rey is resorting to the Dark Side to defeat Kylo Ren whereas it was implied that she used the light side in the original, an uninteresting option since it telegraphed that she was simply more powerful than her opponent, regardless of his momentary weakness. The edit of Snoke saying that he has sensed an awakening comes directly after this moment as well, so it’s very clear that Rey’s power is what he senses, and his ability to bridge her mind with that of Kylo later on adds even more evidence to this thought. Finally, Luke’s rejection of Rey makes a ton more sense if she has already gone so far to the Dark Side to achieve her goals. Rey’s plea with the saber at the end of TFA now has the extra drama of understanding that she is a dangerous student, something borne out in TLJ and beyond.

As far as VFX shots go, I have just two left to do:

-Delete casual Resistance officer in Leia Mourning
-Tweak Rey and Finn staring at Starkiller Firing
