Not the worst idea, actually.
Not the worst idea, actually.
I hope people don’t find it strange when they find out I have a framed printout of a review on my wall…
But seriously, thank you for the review! It means just so much.
On to your comments!
TR-8R was dubbed by the wonderful Axlanian, who also did the replacement for ‘Ship’s clear’ in the Kylo Falcon scene. My voice is much less commanding, alas.
I hadn’t deeply inspected the original transitions, so you’re probably correct that they take too long. I’ve also been struggling to find a good way to do the wipes since Premiere often throws weird glitches my way. It could stand another look.
The score for this film is noticeably buried in the mix. I haven’t tried specifically to bring it out, though that is a good suggestion.
Color will always be a moving target, so it’s inevitable that I will be tinkering with that later.
The Falcon tracking device idea is one that I’m not sure how to implement effectively, other than putting an obvious audio announcement or sign on the device that says “TRACKING DEVICE” which rather defeats the purpose. Any more thoughts would help here.
The mind trick scene originally had an escalation as you describe. My intention was to have his idle threats give way to a tension-filled silence when he approaches as if his intentions are unclear. I’m pretty happy with how it works, though opinions differ I’m sure.
I’ll have to check the celebration shot again for Chewie removal.
The binary beacon was originally supposed to be on the bed beside Finn’s head - very prominently placed - but upon inspecting the scene we see that the bed is just below shot. I put the beacon off on a table beside the bed which quickly pans out of shot, so it’s something that you have to really look for. I’m fine with this, honestly, since it’s technically there but doesn’t draw attention to itself or distract from the scene.
The etching was done in Photoshop with a brush I created to replicate the effect of scraping on metal.
Again, thank you for the kind words and good criticism, it made my day!
Oh no need to feel bad, thanks for the feedback! I will take it all into account for the eventual v2 😉
I have a VFX suggestion. The last shot of the ties flying over we see red and yellow laser shooting below??? I know it may sound a little silly but its an idea that popped in my head.
A good idea…for someone other than me to achieve 😉
You’re welcome, Atom. Also, PM Sent!
There’s a slight zoom in the previous renders (to fix some strangeness and better frame the forest) which has been carried over to this one, but there’s no additional zoom from the old versions.
No, that may go in some later version but I’m happy with the vision as-is for now.
How’s the progress on Rey’s eyes?
Haven’t had the chance to work on them yet, since I’m still trying to figure out the Mustafar intro.
Speaking of, I realized that the light source in the pan-down is coming from the left while our other shots have the light coming from the right. Also in the pan-down, the TIEs are on the left of the screen which would imply that they enter from frame left in any subsequent shot. Keeping these things in mind, here’s my take on the opening:

I also put some lava in what looked like a river in the forest flyover.
Since we know that the RO shot is very similar in its opening to this one, I don’t think anyone should mind if the beginning of the biomes shot is cut. This way the back of the shot is emphasized, a part that wasn’t in RO.
But the Biomes shot now has TIEs flying over the forest as well (or would be if it was extended to cover the whole shot). Or are you saying that the forest is more apparent in the flyover, therefore that shot is more necessary?
Thanks for watching! And notes are welcome, whenever you’d like to post them 😃 I’m sure there are the inevitable errors, oversights, and changes promised but forgotten (hell, I remember one already!), but it will probably be a while yet before they are addressed unless there’s something egregious.
Well that’s the hope, but at the very least there will be two versions of the scene so people can choose what they prefer 😃
Alternately - and though I do like the two-shot implementation - we could just use the Biomes shot in its entirety since it has every element (Castle, Lava, Forest, TIEs), instead of splitting the elements over two or three shots. We’d just need to extend the TIE flyover slightly.
^PM Sent!
I haven’t yet watched this, but I’ve been looking over the changelog.
I can’t quite visualise this one from Visions:
- Change the Starkiller Firing sequence and Oscillator destruction so that Poe’s final bombing run doesn’t destroy the Oscillator. Instead, the weapon fires at the end of Rey’s and Kylo’s battle and the force of the weapon completes the Oscillator destruction.
What’s the motivation behind this change, and why it’s only in Visions as opposed to Starlight core?
This was in an old workprint. It was intended to give more weight to the weapon’s power and to have the destruction of the New Republic at the same time as Rey’s despair about Finn.
Poe would go into the Oscillator as usual but his weapons wouldn’t destroy it completely. He would fly out of an intact Oscillator, then cut to Ackbar stating how the weapon is damaged but still functional and it will fire in 2 minutes. Rey and Kylo then continue their fight and after that (which is almost exactly two minutes) the weapon fires. This shakes the ground where Rey and Kylo are fighting, and the already damaged Oscillator fully explodes. The firing sequence happens as usual and the scene ends with a new shot of Leia grieving and Rey returning to Finn in the snow.
I ended up cutting this for several reasons, partially because of its complexity, but primarily because it took focus away from our primary heroes in their most desperate moments to linger on the New Republic destruction, which simply doesn’t have the setup to justify the same feelings of loss.
Now in theory, the destruction of the New Republic would be important enough to warrant this focus, and perhaps the new Star Wars shows will do for this institution what the Clone Wars did for Anakin’s character and give us the bare minimum needed to care about it, and for this reason I’m planning on putting out a version of the edit with this change.
And presumably the other two changes in Visions, where Rey only dreams of Luke rather than visits him, are so that a theoretical TLJ edit can imply more time has passed on Ach-To for Rey’s training?
Yes, I wanted the standard version of this edit to play nice with TLJ in most of its forms, but Visions would be specifically paired with my future version of TLJ which is the main reason I’m holding off on those changes for now.
Thanks!
I would definitely consider using Rekindled, since to my eyes it’s the best version of that film so far.
Hope it lives up to your expectations!
So, there won’t be a V2, since you just renamed it from V1 to nothing.
I was just simplifying the thread title, there could very well be more versions.

I think the Biomes shot might work as-is, since the prior shot is of a very pink/red planet from space, and the forest and lava fields at the end of the shot trend a bit more yellow which transitions into the flyover.
I think even the planet has a bit more orange than the castle shot though, and even then I think it’s more important that the footage of the surface blends together, in that closeup of Kylo’s face you get a good look at the clouds above and they’re a mix of pink and yellow/orange, while on the castle shot they’re a more pale white and pink.
You may be right - the Biomes shot has now been adjusted accordingly to be slightly less pink.
It’s the same link, I just replaced workprint v107 with the new release version so you should be good to go!
Oh, one of them will be pretty obvious 😉
“Arrakis teaches the attitude of the knife - chopping off what’s incomplete and saying: ‘Now, it’s complete because it’s ended here.’”
-Dune
On that note, Version 1 is complete and will soon be up on the organ. The workprint folder link also has a low bitrate version of the complete edit, so anyone with that link already has access.
In addition to the usual changes from the last workprint, there are one or two changes that I’ve kept largely unannounced in the hopes that they will bring some hopefully welcome surprise.
Thank you again to everyone here, you’re the reason this edit exists!
I’ve tweaked the colors of the flyover to have more pink. I think the Biomes shot might work as-is, since the prior shot is of a very pink/red planet from space, and the forest and lava fields at the end of the shot trend a bit more yellow which transitions into the flyover.
I’ll take a stab at it.
Thanks, here’s a pass at it.
Interesting that you say the sky is brown in that shot, I was trying to move away from the brown ‘Mordor’ look of the place into the more pink tone of the opening planet vista. To me, the forest flyover appears a touch too yellow in the highlights compared to the footage that follows.
I could give it a final color pass if this sequence is locked, try to unify it.
