AntcuFaalb's Weight Loss Journey
Time

Hi, AntcuFaalb, looking at what you've eaten the past two days, I see most of your vegetables come from the Lean Cuisine Meals. I've done those before, and there's not all that much in the way of vegetables there.

how do you feel about including more fresh vegetables in your diet? It's a habit for me to have a salad every day, usually at lunch or sometimes at dinner, a huge thing in a big soup bowl. It goes a long way towards filling me up. My brother and I take turns making salads, but on occasion I've made a large amount of salad and refrigerated it so that it would last for a few days. Adding olive oil and cheese is a good replacement for dressing. I don't even miss it now.

Good luck on your new goal!

Resource Thread: Isolating Music and Voices in Star Wars
Time

I imported the French version of the GOUT soundtrack into Audacity along with the English version, and the waveforms are very different, even for the supposedly identical music. So I don't think that will work either. I also tried copying the english sound and used a compressor to bring down the vocals. Then I inverted the compressed soundwave, hoping to keep the higher volume voice while cancelling out the lower volume music, and while that may work with enough effort, it didn't sound good. There are also parts where the music is louder than the voice, rendering the method useless in those places. So I'm at a loss.

It's the same link posted at the top of this page. And for now it's only a rumour.

To me it sounds too good to be true (three more movies with Han Solo plus an Indy movie that might rectify KOTCS?).

Oh, I thought that it was only the Indy 5 news.

I feel exactly the opposite about Han Solo. To me the character is dead. Didn't KOTCS show how difficult it was to revive an old character?

Yep, and now it's done. The new news is that Han Solo may be back for more than Episode 7: http://www.jedinews.co.uk/news/news.aspx?newsID=14102

I don't get it. I thought that he wanted to be done with Star Wars after Jedi. And if he doesn't die in 7, and Luke and Leia stay on, what's the point of casting new characters at all?

I've got a bad feeling about this.

The Force Conquers All - [Completed Short Story/ROTJ Reimagining]
Time

I hope the last post didn't seem too critical; the way you decided to end Boba is really dramatic. Perhaps Vader's gloating over Boba could be made to include information about Boba's personal code, further reinforcing why he would suddenly work for the rebels. I like how Vader knows Boba's thoughts. It would be a blow to the Rebellion if Vader was able to extract from him their location.

Full speed ahead, I'd say.

JEDIT: You posted chapter 11 fast! I wasn't aware that the ship itself had telepathic abilities. This is shaping up to be an extremely interesting conflict.

STAR WARS EPISODE VII - JEDI DAWN
Time

Aw, but refilming a movie is cheating.

I recognize that ROTJ is the weakest of the originals, but ESB is my personal favorite, in part because of the reveal. Consider it this way: In order for a sequel to feel like part of a larger story and not be seen simply as a sequel, it will need to contain plot information which is absolutely essential to understanding the nature of the primary conflict, information which was not in any way present in the original movie. In this way, ESB excels. Up until the reveal, it is a sequel in every sense of the word. The reveal changes the nature of the conflict established in ANH, presenting the hero with an insoluble dilemma. Vader ceases to be a simple monster and becomes the personification of the conflict within Luke, and is an assault on his very motivation to be a Jedi. ROTJ satisfactorily concludes this conflict, though it leaves all other conflicts by the wayside or conveniently ends them. This is why I believe that ROTJ is a worthy conclusion to the story of Star Wars: it completes the primary conflict.

If Episode 7 is to succeed as a true continuation of the Star Wars story, it will need to redefine the previous entry in order to allow this entry (ROTJ) to present the insoluble dilemma, which in the case of Star Wars seems to be that ultimate power corrupts absolutely: "Take your father's place by my side" or that evil is more powerful than good: "Your feeble skills are no match for the power of the Dark Side". This can be accomplished by showing how the New Republic has become just as dictatorial as the Empire, or it could go in the other direction and show how even the best the Rebellion had was not enough to save it from the Empire. I have chosen the latter, as it has the upside of being completely unexpected, like the reveal in ESB. It redefines the weakest of the original trilogy as the masterstroke of a cunning Emperor, and in a stroke it balances the terms of the next engagement, eliminating many heroes to allow for new heroes, and essentially establishing a villain who is greater than any yet faced.

Thanks, I've never downloaded from the 'spleen or the alt binaries, but I may do so. This is a long term project, so there's no rush for materials. Thank you for the info! I definitely want to try cancelling out the music, so at the very least, we'll have definite proof about whether or not any takes in the LP are exact.

JEDIT: Curse you Frink, stop getting between the poster and my reply! Now it sounds like I'm thanking you!

crystal skull is not bad, i've seen far worse. i'm happy that harrison keeps going. one of the last big time movie stars.

The Indiana Jones saga should have ended in 1989.   Crystal Skull shouldn't have been made.  'I've seen far worse',  what a great way to convince someone to watch a movie.

I've seen worse as well. It's called Temple of Doom. What a depressing and annoying waste of time that movie was. At least Crystal Skull did interesting things. Perhaps not good things, but interesting things nonetheless.

STAR WARS EPISODE VII - JEDI DAWN
Time

I really like the present tense for the crawl as well, however it seems unfitting to talk about events which happened thirty years ago as if they happened yesterday. It would be like saying:

It is a time of civil war. After maiming the Sith Lord Darth Vader in a duel, Obi-wan Kenobi has gone into exile on the remote world of Tatooine. Meanwhile, the Rebel Alliance has won it's first victory against the evil GALACTIC EMPIRE.

While there is nothing technically wrong with this statement, it makes it seem like these two events happen in quick succession. Especially problematic is that Luke and Leia "head into exile", which implies that we will meet up with them a few days after the Endor disaster. I think the first two parts of your crawl do work better though, but it may work better if the last bit was rewritten to say:

Narrowly ecaping the destruction of Endor, the rebel heroes Luke and Leia Skywalker toil in exile, determined to gather new strength in the fight for freedom and justice among the darkening stars....

This way the hinge of time rests on "toil in exile" instead of "head into exile", which can imply as much time as necessary.

I'm glad I've converted you to the Dark Side of the Star Wars sequels; in time, you will call the true Emperor "Master"!

A New Hope DVD Color Correction (*unfinished project * - a mass of information)
Time

Well, that was just a quick and dirty correction, as the Death Star turned rather green. Granted that it's not supposed to be as gray as it was in the DVD, but further work is probably in order with that shot. No rotoscoping was done. The removal of unwanted colors was accomplished with selective gamma modifications as well as my method of subtracting the blue bleed.

Resource Thread: Isolating Music and Voices in Star Wars
Time

I am interested in making a trailer for ANH, and naturally I would like as much of the dialogue as possible to be isolated from the background music. I’m thinking about the Leia Hologram speech in particular. I’ve attempted to use the six channel AC3 file to isolate the vocals, however this is a very imperfect solution.

I’ve also attempted to use the noise reduction tool in Audacity to remove the music in this scene, but it always garbled the voice as well.

There is a way to isolate and eliminate the music in a scene, and this involves having an identical recording of the music which was used in the scene itself (this must be the same recording, not just the same notes). If the music is lined up and the waveforms of the recording are inverted, the two music waveforms will cancel out, leaving the rest of the sounds relatively intact.

My question to all the audiophiles on this forum is this: Does the original LP (or the 93 CD) use PRECISELY the same recording of any of the music in Star Wars? If not, is there any other way to isolate the dialogue?

Thanks!

JEDIT: 1,111th thread!

That's one way to look at it.  Another is to look at the blanket setting as a starting point for someone else's project, like the one You_Too provided for Harmy, in which case it wouldn't matter that certain shots were not perfect.

I don't envy the person who wants to understand my settings. It started out so simple, just a single video layer with about 22 luma and chroma settings to solve every problem in the movie. Ha.

Fast forward a year, and there are over a hundred discrete luma and chroma settings, spread over seven video layers, which together will only minimize certain systemic issues, but leave many scenes and individual shots sorely wanting.

That's what it will look like when it's up and running. I'm just not sure anyone else will want to deal with the confusion.

If you are considering scene by scene maybe you should still render a version with these settings as back up. Is there a way to split your source file at the reel changes and render the reels individually with the settings to split the rendering time?

The problem isn't render time, necessarily. I did just render the entire thing, the only problem was that I was derpy and forgot to disable a single reference image overlaid on the video, so now I've got a still image halfway through the film that hangs on screen for a few seconds. Next weekend I may render it correctly.
