STAR WARS: EP VI -RETURN OF THE JEDI "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - ** PRODUCTION HAS NOW RESTARTED **
Time

According to the EU (I know, I know) the gas giant Endor has nine moons. The mining operation could take place on one or more of these moons, and we could see a partially destroyed moon passing in front of Endor prime in one shot. There’s some potential here for striking imagery, ala Avatar:

The interior of the Sentinel’s cockpit is similar to the Lambda’s anyway (unlike the Zeta), so he wouldn’t have to change anything there.

So does the exterior nose, which means some background replacement for the docking bay set instead of replacing every set piece.

I am, however, very much in favor of seeing a string of thousands of various cargo/construction crafts moving between the Death Star and the moon, which can include the Zeta-class; for there it makes sense and I hope we see it.

I was thinking of this too, but does the current dialog on the Star Destroyer allow for Tydirium to just be one of hundreds they’ve seen today? And would they all have to pass right over the Destroyer and “fly casual”?

It would be cool to see dozens of shuttles milling about the Death Star, but since the moon only contains the shield generator and this is operational, there shouldn’t be many craft traveling that way. So perhaps Tydirium is in a line of shuttles headed for the Death Star but breaks away for the moon, taking it across the path of the destroyer.

Vengeance is absolutely fantastic. One of the best fanedits in general I’ve seen, and it’s the definitive version of STID for me.

I just saw this edit, after last seeing the original over a year ago. This is the first edit I’ve seen that makes me wonder why I disliked the original, since it’s so seamless in excising the bad. It all seems effortless, which is all the more impressive since there were so many changes.

I will admit that I’ve only been absolutely destroyed by how devastatingly bad a picture is a handful of times. One was CR 2006. One was Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. One was TFA. And then there was what happened to poor Speed.

After watching the trailer, my brother and I looked at each other and knew that this wasn’t going to be a return to the used-universe aesthetic of the originals, no matter what JJ had promised.

I assume you were pleasantly surprised in this regard when you saw the film.

I had already known that a lot of the creatures and props would be practical, but there’s no denying that few frames of the movie are untouched by digital enhancement. That and the more modern editing style did take some getting used to, but eventually I came to appreciate the film for what it was and not my unrealistic vision of what it could probably never have been.

A common thread for all these films is that they are updating the look and feel of a much older property. Not having much history with the Bond franchise, I didn’t mind Casino Royale and it seemed competently made. KotCS was a disappointment on much more than the visual style of course, but the new look and feel of TFA was expected since the final trailer, for me at any rate. I remember the moment when I had to adjust my expectations: After watching the trailer, my brother and I looked at each other and knew that this wasn’t going to be a return to the used-universe aesthetic of the originals, no matter what JJ had promised. Everything about the production looked modern, slick, and CG’d. Everyone’s had time to get used to the new look of Star Wars, but it was quite a disappointment to see such an iconic look be sublimated into a film for modern sensibilities. Were my expectations unrealistic? Absolutely. I think it’s important to appreciate a work of art as it exists in the present day, and not hold it to the standard of a time long gone. After all, if Star Wars was made today you can bet that it would use CGI and the cinematographic shorthand of the time.

Let's Play Mad Libs
Time

This one was created straight from an entry in Wookieepedia:

Luke is in the Wolf 359 desert interrogating a moisture vaporator, assisted by a Bank of America droid, when he notices handsome objects in the sky. With his macrobinoculars Luke sees two ships whine beyond the apartment. He jumps into his Daytonaspeeder. The Summoning Treadwell blows a porcelain doll and is unable to follow. Luke adopts off into the desert to find his friends. Luke’s Coruscantspeeder races into the armpit of Anchorhead, nearly shaving an old woman. Luke rushes into Tosche Station, jovially telling his friends about the Wookiee above their planet. He is overjoyed to be reunited with his friend W. Thomas Riker who is on planet leave from Middle Earth. Deak, Windy, Camie, Fixer, and Biggs all follow Luke outside to see the basketball with Luke’s Calvinball. The dying appears to have ended and Luke’s friends ridicule him for making it all up.

It works better than I would have expected.

TFA: A Gentle Restructure (Released)

Thanks for the input everyone. After wracking my brain trying to extend the scene, I’ve got a few more potential solutions, but it seems like most people are happy with it as is, so I’ll just put the MEGA links to the most recent version below, as well as list the wacky ideas for completion’s sake:

Leia’s Demand to the Senate 8
Color Corrected
Dialogue Only
Music Only

Idea 1: Return 3PO to the scene:
“Should we contact the Resistance?”
“Immediately. Our future may depend on it.”
“Yes, of course General!”
“I need you to go to the Senate right away. Tell them I insist the Republic take action against the First Order.”
“Full respect…do you really think they’ll listen?”
“Not all the senators think I’m crazy. (smile reaction) Or maybe they do. I don’t care.”
“Oh my. This is a catastrophe.”

I doubt that this would work better than the scene as it is now, since it adds no new information.

Idea 2: Add to the joke (and plot).
“Not all the senators think I’m crazy.”
(Cut to Caluan Ematt in the shot from the deleted scenes where he says ‘all fighters clear for takeoff, all fighters clear’, except he’s dubbed to say something over the intercom like ‘General, the Senate has blocked all Resistance transmissions’.)
"…Or maybe they do. I don’t care."
(smile)

This idea is definitely weirder, but I kind of like it since it makes explicit the problem with the Republic, and it’s not for want of trying on the part of the Resistance.

“Who is Luke Skywalker? It’s better for the mystery if the audience never finds out, really.”

What is this even supposed to mean.

I think it means that Robert Patrick should have directed Episode IX.

Heh!

Abrams’ answer to Kathleen Kennedy’s question “who is Luke Skywalker” is supposedly what got him the gig to direct TFA in the first place. Unless his answer was “a mystery box,”

I think we have our answer.

Snark aside, why not? The movie is a quest to find Luke, so I’m guessing the pitch was something along the lines of ‘Luke means different things to different people, as his legend has grown. It’s not my job to give you the definitive version of the Jedi Returned.’

I can almost admire that.

New version with normal-speed final shot:
https://vimeo.com/233608717
Password: TFA

I think the scene still needs that final shot, which means keeping the odd reaction earlier. Keep in mind that this scene comes on the heels of an attack on the castle and a serious encounter with Han, so a viewer may need an extra moment to adjust to a lighthearted tone, and the extra shot in that scene serves that purpose in front of the reunion with Poe. That’s how I feel about it anyway.

There still may be a bit of whiplash transitioning to Poe, but I’ll leave it up to the good people here as to which version is best. The scene works in either case. 😃

I usually use a feathered crop to isolate the mouth, then bring it backward or forward in the shot to match the words. This requires keyframing it to match the position of the face pretty precisely, so it was really tricky in the shot where Leia was walking toward the camera. One of the tricks I’ve learned is that audio trails video by a frame or two in our mental processing, which means that the mouth should close a frame or two before the last word ends.
