Ideas Wanted for... Eliminating the Map MacGuffin in TFA
Time

Map of galaxy
Map of the galaxy
It looks to me that R2 had downloaded a map of the galaxy. I didn’t get the impression that the map was leading to anything in particular. There is an orange line there, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that the map was specifically one to the Jedi temple. It could just be that R2 was highlighting the only known hyperspace route into the uncharted region.

The best I can come up with is that the Empire was trying to map the galaxy and hadn’t gotten around to mapping that last section at the time of ANH. Then Luke goes and finds the Jedi temple and leaves the newly discovered piece with Lor San Tekka, or Tekka manages to reconstruct a map to the temple from esoteric religious sources.

The Force Awakens: Starlight (V1.1 Released!)
Time

I do use that keyframing method as a rule, but I often find that even 4 frames without a keyframe is enough to break the tracking. Also, this shot had a bit of camera bounce at times, which required such attention.

I was having a lot of jittery tracking on the X-wing approach to the Starkiller, and after investigation I realized that it was due to not knowing exactly where the replacement matte should be. This can be mitigated by tracking using an unaltered still (the piece that you want to replace) allowing for precise matching of its location through the shot. After getting an exact lock you can alter the still and it will retain the movement.

Info Wanted: Questions about FX in fan edits and the Starkiller Base
Time

Looking at the star draining shot again, it appears that Starkiller is actually behind the star based on how much of it is in the light. This would mean that it would have to be extremely small indeed, compared to the star.

I think it would be possible to move the planet, but even if that’s not feasible, it should be a simple matter to shrink the planet so that it would be a believable distance from the star.
Here’s a mockup of these two ideas:

I actually considered having the beam travel through Hyperspace in this shot, after deleting the Star Destroyer, but I don’t know of an easy way this could be done.

To make the Falcon exiting Hyperspace I blended two shots where the Falcon was in a similar position in each, so the best bet would probably be to find a shot of something else going through hyperspace at a similar angle and replace the ship with the beam. If the camera movement was similar enough in both shots, it might work.

Should I Write Episode Two First?
Time

Starting with the second act in a story seems much harder than starting with the beginning or even the end, simply because you have no setup for your characters or locations. I think that with a prequel story it’s easiest to start at the end and reverse engineer the story. It’s difficult since you have to think backwards, but it’s similar to thinking forwards with a regular plot. For example, Anakin ends the story as a fallen Jedi who nevertheless still values order and justice, as well as loyalty to the Emperor. Thus a potential prequel trilogy could start with a rebellious Anakin who doesn’t care about the Republic. Then his character could change as Obi-wan teaches him the ways of the Force, and he becomes the model Jedi. He’s obedient to the Jedi Order but more than that to the Chancellor. But as he becomes the perfect knight the Jedi Order realizes that the Chancellor is corrupt and the Republic is fallen.

The Last Jedi: Official Review and Opinions Thread ** SPOILERS **

I see many people saying that TLJ deconstructs the myth of Star Wars. I think this is a valid interpretation, but not entirely true. In my view this movie tests the myth, yes, it creates terrible (and incredible) obstacles for the heroes, making them question what was once unquestionable. “dead heroes”, as Leia told Poe, reminding us that in fact not everything serves a divine purpose as we usually believe for these films.

But after the dark journey that was the TLJ, we have a much more powerful myth, in my opinion. One that goes beyond the old norm, because it does not abandon what has already been, it just puts to the test and adds the new concepts. Luke in Crait was real, he inspired the Galaxy, saved the resistance and faced his biggest mistake, Ben. He was a great hero, but still only a man capable of making mistakes.

All the characters in this movie have their truths tested and evolve from that. Just as the film itself tests the truths of the saga (as TESB and TPM did before). I agree that this film has a postmodern side, consequent of the time in which we live, but I do not think that it left the myth, only magnified.

You can’t have your cake and eat it. TLJ deconstructs the legend of Luke Skywalker, and turns him into the deeply flawed man Luke Skywalker. Luke then creates a new in-universe legend or myth of himself within the story. This is not the same as creating a myth for the benefit of the viewer. TLJ is a film about myth and legend, not a myth onto itself. If the OT is the story of how on the North Pole, there’s a mythical person called Santa Clause, who makes toys and then delivers them to children all around the world on Christmas Day, then TLJ is a story about a disillusioned fat old drunk, who tells a young girl who’s come looking for the legend of Santa Clause, that Santa Clause doesn’t exist. After refusing to put on his red suit for the entire story, the fat guy redeems himself by donning the red suit one more time, and giving his greatest performance in the holiday parade, convincing children in the story one last time that Santa is real, before shuffling off the mortal coil.

Except that Luke was indeed a magical Jedi, and has only recently cut himself off from the Force. When he returns, it’s not at all like Santa being in a parade - he’s doing Force magic that is so difficult that the effort ultimately kills him.

Now I imagine Tim Allen finding Luke’s robot hand on the island with a card instructing him on being the new Last Jedi.

After rejecting it for a while, I honestly think an 3 hour epic cut of both films could be cool. I will still just be sticking to doing a regular last jedi edit but am looking forward to the 2 in 1’s that will be done.

They have such different visual aesthetics, and I don’t know if that would take me out of the whole experience.

Star Wars Episode III: Labyrinth Of Evil (Released)
Time

If you want to test the idea, you could use the HDTV versions I’ve already uploaded:
Sunset:
https://mega.nz/#!GQlSmS4J!luBluderZeOJglzTX7Qf0mRCm9XL6NfpvjyctQO_4gg
Night:
https://mega.nz/#!2JNmTaYK!F7r_Ozv2KWMkxPJVSXdPquFV6G32ApoA0kL8QDD0GJI

I can render the Blu-ray version of the sunset, but a night version would take time. However, it’s such a short scene that I don’t think fading one into the other would be very realistic.

Here is the scene in question, from the BluRay, to be attempted to be converted to nighttime and/or sunset:

This footage had a different look than the HDTV version, so I had to redo the correction.
One issue that the Blu-ray has that the HDTV version doesn’t have (at least as much) is that there’s something wrong with the color channels. In particular, the red channel is not merely misaligned but just plain wrong:

This shot (and the similar one from the end) seem to be the worst offenders. Does anyone know if this could be fixed? I tried to resize the red layer, but as you can see it’s worse than just RGB misalignment.

Honestly both series have a lot of pretty awful filler episodes. Rebels more so than The Clone Wars to me though.

Space whales…

jokes on us all when NASA reports that space whales are real.
