An essay written by JGL on Luke Skywalker - worth reading. Even though we ultimately disagree, he clarifies some great points already presented in this thread several times, and he does acknowledge that those who didn’t like the movie aren’t entirely wrong on Luke’s characterization or the movie itself.
If already posted, forgive me.
Another way to take this is that Luke is no longer our main character. In a movie, audience avatars such as Luke or Neo or Ethan Hunt cannot abandon their missions, cannot have self doubt so severe that they give up on the story, since that sends the clear message that the audience should give up on the story. I think this is where many fans are stuck right now. They still see Luke as the main character, someone who needs to have faith in this story. But the main character is Rey, and it is through her eyes that we are seeing this version of Luke. She is disappointed with this guy, the legend who was supposed to show Rey her place in all this. And that’s exactly why Luke cannot be the legend anymore. He must be a disappointment because otherwise people would continue to see him as the main character, and Rey would never even have the opportunity to carry the weight of the story on her shoulders.
People forget also that this is a mythological convention as old as the hills, and even Star Wars has used it in the past. The father figure becomes the ogre that our hero must slay, for the good of the people. Their time has passed, their rule is corrupted, the young blood must overthrow them. The Last Jedi accomplishes this in spades.
Maybe so. I don’t keep up with the new canon in any case.
Stupid Watergate.
I did forgot to list a third option:
C. Some people just gotta go with their favourite colour.
Fair.
Red itself being “bad” is just a terrible idea though.
Exactly.
Ideally, lightsaber colours would be
A. chosen to represent the character’s persona
B. chosen to mesh with the character’s overall aesthetic
But nope. Red = bad & everything else = good for stupid EU reasons.
Lightsabers are deadly weapons used for maiming and killing people (and sometimes slicing up Tauntauns). The idea that Jedi are concerned with how their color matches their personality makes me giggle.
Jedi: “Hi, as you can see from my purple lightsaber, I am a Sagittarius from the volcanic world of Kadavo.”
Evildoer: (being sliced in half) “Cool.”
BTW welcome back to the forums. 😃
Random Opinions on appearances:
I liked that Hux looked more sallow and haunted.
I liked how Leia looked more regal.
I liked how Snoke was a sassy jerk.
I liked how C-3PO and R2-D2 looked a lot more realistic somehow.
I liked Holdo’s…everything.
Heck, even the old ESB Atari 2600 game can’t be beaten.
My thinking is that if we establish this great pilot who is able to outmaneuver a guy who’s basically murdering his opponents, we’ll be on board for accepting him especially since he’s so young. I don’t think it’s possible to avoid his youth until after the announcer, but if his impressive actions are allowed to speak for him, it would be ideal.
Anakin’s new introduction. I think seeing for the first time, behind the controls of the Pod, significantly helps justify him piloting the Naboo straighter during the final battle.
I aslo made some changes to Jar Jar’s introduction to Padme, I’m not aware of this being done before…

Cool ideas here.
Anakin’s introduction is very abrupt. I realize you’re trying to emulate the style of a Marvel movie, but the prequels are shot so passively that I don’t know how successful that can be. My suggestion: After the discussion about going to Tatooine and the Hutts (maybe ending with ‘It’s controlled by the Hutts’), cut to an establishing shot of the planet with the start of the race fanfare. Then show the wide shot of the starting line with Jabba the Hutt, so that the two ideas are linked. Then we get a quick start to the race and shots of many racers being picked off quickly by Sebulba. After he’s established a lead, then we see an unknown racer in a small pod begin to overtake him, and they are linked together. When Anakin breaks free, the announcer shouts ‘It’s Skywalker!’, and only then do we get a good look at his face.
When we talk about themes, are we referring to Leitmotifs for characters/things? If so, I don’t know if it even makes sense to have so many different ‘themes’ for Anakin.
But it’s true that in Restructured the Resistance target is somewhat of a loose thread, narratively speaking. There’s really no way to fix that since it’s important in TLJ.
According to ‘# of movies they’ve been in’, Palpatine, Obi-wan, Yoda, and Anakin are the main characters in the saga.
I thought it was Chewbacca, R2-D2, and C-3P0.
I’m not sure this is a great summary of the whole thread but I’ll take it.
The top of the page is more than one post.
The whole page is one big post.
And look over there! DrDre and Mrebo waiting to quote us.
I think lightsaber crystals should optically degrade over time, with the crystal darkening until it eventually became red.
The Jedi, being largely pacifist, would not use their lightsabers often. This would preserve the colors of the crystals. Some yellowing would still occur of course, requiring new Jedi to build their own sabers instead of using old ones passed down from generation to generation.
For the Original trilogy, this would mean that Obi-wan’s saber would be yellow from years of use. Anakin’s would be in better shape but still wouldn’t be bright blue. Vader’s would of course remain red.
According to ‘# of movies they’ve been in’, Palpatine, Obi-wan, Yoda, and Anakin are the main characters in the saga.

Good point.

Needs to be completely Comic Sands.
…
Oh man I should do that for my edit.
…
Nah that’s too stupid even for me.
AOTR for sure, that would really get under Ani’s skin.
Seems like it would remove the “we’re making our landing approach at lightspeed?!” thing.
Would you remove Leia’s line, “Han, how?” and “If I told you you wouldn’t like it”?
Well they still get onto the planet the same way, it’s just that it would be filtered through Rey’s vision. I’m imagining something like Spock’s Mind Meld from Star Trek 2009, where the information is still communicated but in an altered way. So Leia’s line would stay.
I’ve long had some larger plans for the Starlight Project, but I’ve kept them close to the vest for a while as I’ve debated about how I want it to play out. However, since The Last Jedi leans heavily into the mental connection between Kylo and Rey, I’m much more confident that these ideas will work in the broader context of this trilogy.
These biggest change is a greatly restructured Starkiller section with an expanded Interrogation scene, where the viewer is taken into the minds of Rey and Kylo. Here’s how I imagine the sequence of events:

The red channel weirdness is unfortunate, but maybe you can do something like combining the best shots of each version.
I probably won’t be removing it entirely, but it’s just a cringey name, especially when Leia says it. That bit will definitely be going.
