The Phantom Menace - Bobson's Theatrical Recontruction v2 (WIP)

Now armed with ZigZig’s PaNup SDTV source, I’ve updated the timeline to include it at a higher quality. The Palpatine’s office bit now fades in on both ends (Qui-Gon and Anakin/Jar Jar) and hopefully isn’t as noticable as a hard cut.

I’ve also started on the subtitles, but am taking some creative liberties with them as to make them more eye-pleasing to me as it appears the subtitles are rather squashed, even when scaled back to how it originally should look. It’s now just the 69pt and -30 tracking, which looks better IMO.

Compared to what it would look like if it was closer to the Z Bootleg

Perhaps the ‘squashed’ look would be better for a large screen, so that audiences could more easily read the entire text.

Here’s an attempt at replicating the bootleg subtitles in Photoshop, using Franklin Gothic Demi Condensed, the settings are 63 pt with 109% letter height and a value of zero for tracking. Drop shadow is 150 degrees.
With a bit of blurring (1.8%) to approximate the bootleg, this is what it looks like:

The Force Awakens: Starlight (V1.1 Released!)
Time

The idea to edit Maz’s Castle battle isn’t going to work in the way I envisioned, due to the placement of the music. In short, the sequence
Han and Finn captured
Kylo finding Rey
Resistance arrival
Kylo abducts Rey
suffers from emotional whiplash, which was the opposite of what I was trying to achieve.

However, there is one change that I think could work quite well, and that is changing the abduction so that Finn starts running to Rey before it’s obviously too late:

Password: fanedit

It’s music only for now, with the version 6 LUT.

Doesn’t R2 have wheels? Or am I going crazy?

I expect that the droids have wheels because the designers literally couldn’t think of another way for them to move around. But I think it’s telling that the wheels are either barely noticeable or covered by panels.

They could have hovered, like every other vehicle in Star Wars ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I meant as a practical solution that wouldn’t require excessive special effects for the budget and era.

The Original Trilogy Radical Redux Ideas Thread

Alright, here’re all my ideas for Return of the Jedi: The David Lynch Cut:

 • John Williams’ score is replaced with a discordant Lynchian score.
 • Bib Fortuna is replaced with The Mystery Man from Lost Highway.
 • Jabba is given large, disgusting pustules, which The Mystery Man constantly lances and drains.
 • The Black Lodge inhabitants from Twin Peaks & Fire Walk with Me are among Jabba’s courtiers.
 • Oola is given a heart plug, which Jabba pulls out before tossing her to the rancor.
 • Leia is forced to perform a striptease for Jabba and his men.
 • The Sarlacc is made even more vaginal in appearance.
 • Leia strangles Jabba so hard, his entire pustule-ridden body bursts in gory fashion.
 • The Death Star II is now a shell encasing a miniature black hole. This black hole is the gateway to Palpatine’s extradimensional throne room. Palpatine’s throne room is now identical to Snoke’s (red walls and all that).
 • Palpatine is given white, cataracted eyes, and he speaks “backwards”.
 • Force Ghost Obi-Wan is now a living tree with a fleshy mass for a head.
 • Madine is now a member of this alien race, and constantly drinks/eats/smokes/etc. through the top of his head.
 • Luke & Leia have visibly uncomfortable twincestual sex right before heading off to Endor.
 • Michael J. Anderson’s face is superimposed on all the Ewoks.
 • The Ewoks eat all of Han’s extremities before Luke performs the floating Threepio trick.
 • Leia is forced to carry a limb-less Han on her back throughout the rest of the picture.
 • Luke & Vader enter Palpatine’s throne room through a psychedelic 2001-style stargate sequence.
 • Instead of firing a green superlaser which blows ships up, the Death Star II fires an inverted violet/black singularity beam which sucks ships down into the miniature black hole, crushing them out of existence.
 • Palpatine’s Force lightning looks/works exactly the same way as the Death Star II’s singularity beam, and affects Luke by spaghettifying his body and drawing him into Palpatine’s being.
 • After Palpatine is thrown down the reactor shaft and explodes, a giant, ghostly sperm cell rises from the abyss before fading away.
 • Sebastian Shaw is replaced with old Mark Hamill.
 • The Rebels take out the Death Star II by destroying the miniature black hole.
 • “Yub Nub” & “Victory Celebration” are replaced with “In Heaven (Lady in the Radiator Song)”.
 • Force Ghost Yoda is now a giant.

Many of these ideas are actually good.

Except that Luke already carries the supporting cast on his back for the entire movie.

4K restoration on Star Wars

Guys, the trailer doesn’t have final color grading. It’s mostly to show off the cleanup work that’s been done, which if I’m not mistaken is also not quite done.

If it’s anything like 4K77, it’ll be ready to go in a couple weeks as far as cleanup and stuff goes, then everyone will argue about the color for six more months before it finally is released.

you forgot that we will also argue about the colors for six months after the release as well.

Or for those with uncalibrated monitors and a lack of good sense, forever.

Because I was bored and curious:

The Telescopic ladder

And one where the ladder is just rungs held together by the Force:

No Rungs

Incidentally, I find it slightly strange that the ST X-wings have wheels rather than those ski things from the OT. Wheels are a somewhat non-Star Warsy thing.

Never mind that, where the heck does the X-wing ladder go when you’re not parked in a hangar? In the cut sandstorm footage from ROTJ, Luke basically chucks it on the ground before taking off.

It wouldn’t surprise me if there was already an in universe explanation for this, and I want to hear it. I could use a good laugh.

I know the Sequel Trilogy X-wings have a slot for what could conceivably be a telescoping ladder.

Ladderific

But as for the OT X-wings, who knows.

So glad that this minor mystery that she, by her actions, made peace with in TFA is now her central character flaw.

Why would something she’s come to terms with become a flaw? If anything, it would eliminate a flaw.

Ric Olié was a human male starship pilot who served in the Royal Naboo Security Forces. He was the commander of the Naboo Royal Space Fighter Corps, and the leader of Bravo Flight. Olié's talents also landed him the job of the Queen's personal pilot, often flying the Naboo Royal Starship in the service of Padmé Amidala. Due to Naboo's pacifistic nature, Olié's skills were rarely in use, although he saw military action during the Invasion of Naboo.

I take it the remark I was responding to was sarcastic.

Yes.

He hasn’t even met her before she’s realized the truth of her parentage.

‘Dear child, you already know the truth. Whomever you’re waiting for on Jakku…they’re never coming back. The belonging you seek is not behind you, it is ahead.’

So glad that this minor mystery that she, by her actions, made peace with in TFA is now her central character flaw.

Of course you cut out an important part of that dialogue

Maz: “They’re never coming back. But there’s someone who still could.”
Rey: “Luke”

Actually forgot that part, but it doesn’t really change the point.

As Kylo notes in TLJ
“You can’t stop needing them. It’s your greatest weakness. Looking for them everywhere - in Han Solo, now in Skywalker.”

Her flaw is not the mystery, nor simply coming to terms with the fact that they’re never coming back. It’s relying on them or someone else in that role to guide her. The fact that they’re nobody isn’t devastating to her because it means she’ll never see them again, it’s because it means she doesn’t have an easily understood preordained story to follow (like being a Skywalker would), she has to figure one out for herself.

I don’t think Rey waited her whole life for her parents to return simply so they could reveal ‘her place in all this’, but because she wanted a family.

Wanting a family with whom to belong isn’t a weakness, it’s a strength. Of course it’s typical Kylo to make that mistake, but it shows the limitation of using his reasoning on Rey’s character flaws. Rey might have gone to Luke’s island ostensibly for the Resistance and for his guidance, but her real reason was to find a genuine belonging that she has lacked her entire life. If Luke had been that kind, fatherly figure that she imagined, she wouldn’t have gone to Kylo as a last resort, to find some sort of decency that even Luke couldn’t muster for her.

When Kylo instead dives further into nihilistic abandon, telling Rey that what she’s searching for is a preordained place in the story, it’s his warped interpretation of her journey. He’s trying to give her what she wants, to the best of his understanding. But she doesn’t care about all that, not really.

So if Kylo was lying and her parents really were super secret Jedi or Skywalkers or Kenobis or Palpatine’s granddaughter, it wouldn’t make any difference to her. The fact that they never came back is all the evidence she needed in TFA that they didn’t care, and that she’d need to move on. This scene needed to directly threaten Rey’s journey, but it is a big swing and a miss, in terms of challenging her.

When Vader was revealed to be Luke’s father, it struck at the heart of Luke’s journey to be a Jedi. He wanted to be a Jedi like his father, and he never dreamed that his father could be anything but good. It was a revelation engineered for the audience to be sure, but more importantly it was put in place to directly challenge Luke.

When Kylo reveals that Rey’s parents are nobodies, it is no revelation except maybe to the conspiracy-minded audience members. Rey already knows it, and more importantly has known since TFA that they’re never coming back. If Kylo had made some argument to Rey that Luke, Finn, Leia all cared about Rey because of her powers and that he alone cared about her as a person, that might have struck closer to her core journey. But instead Kylo clearly only cares about her for her power, whereas Finn cares about her regardless. It’s a simple choice for her to reject that sort of temptation, and she does so even before the end of the movie.

It was a scene by, for, and to the audience, not Rey.

Is Kylo Ren a Good Villain?
Time

regularjoe said:

I find his character uncompelling, uninteresting not-even-evil-lite and he’s the reason that I don’t really like either TFA or TLJ (I am a big fan of both R1 and Solo). I just can’t invest in his character and that really undermines watching the sequel trilogy because it basically leaves me without an antagonist. I like the rest of the movies just fine, there’s things with all four that I wish that they invested more in, but Darth Brat just doesn’t sell it for me.

What specifically about the character do you find uncompelling? Certainly he’s an unlikable brat, but that’s stock-in-trade for movie villains. Put another way, would his character have been better if he had been stronger or scarier?
