Info: OT Bootleg DVDs

sure, but i heard that (forgive me for saying this) some of the people at the Torrents are scams.

I don't think that's possible. It's the eBay folks that can be less than reputable. Consider that you may have bought the TR47 set and the person who did all the work isn't re-imbursed while some guy with a DVD burner is profitting from it.

Another Trilogy DVD Screw Up?
Time
Okay, we all know that the sound is bad on Star Wars.

Check out this screen grab from The Empire Strikes Back comparing the new 2004 transfer (top) to the 1993 THX transfer (bottom).

I'm sure all that cropping is deliberate, right? It always happens on shots like that one, with the camera looking into the Falcon's cockpit. This photo is when they are escaping from Hoth. Later, during the asteroid field chase, the same cropping is present.

BIG BIG question - Episode I; what was the trailer shown before the film at the cinema?

Remember when TPM came out and Lucas said all the trailers in front of it had to be 30 seconds or less? What an ass!

No, the request was that no more than three trailers total could be attached. 20th Century Fox, realizing this, created a trailer that combined two different combination of 3 30 second ads: Titan AE, The Beach, and either Anna and the King, or Fight Club. So that way, they could get 3 times the trailer exposure than any other company that happened to get their trailers attached to the movie. The 30 second triple trailer idea was all 20th Century Fox, not Lucas.

Not that it really mattered. Lucas also requested that only THX theaters play his movie. Neither request was followed by all the chains. Many of them attached 5 or 6 trailers, and a lot of those screenings were in theaters NOT certified by THX. Although a lot of theaters scrambled to get their screens certified in time.

Then please explain to me the 30 second Austin Powers 2 trailer I have in my posession that played on TPM? Or The Generals Daughter? Or Wild Wild West? They all came in the cans for The Fandom Penance and had labels affixed that said they were only for TPM.

Idea & Info: The Definitive Stereo Mix
Time
The lines that creeped into the 2004 mix were not heard in any previous mix, so I figure dump them! I'd rather not be reminded of that horrible disc when watching Star Wars. The Definitive mix is actually my least favorite of all of the Star Wars mixes, since a lot of the new sound effects stand out to me. I like the mix heard on the EditDroid disc (sourced from the 1989 LD) and the original Dolby Stereo mix (heard on the pan and scan CAV Star Wars LD) and the mono mix.

More unreleased ROTJ music
Time
The complete recording of Jabba the Hutt was probably recorded with the LSO in 1983 for inclusion on the album, but the whole thing has never surfaced. A portion of it was included on the original album and the Anthology as part of Han Solo Returns. That's the only part ever released though and it may be the only part that isn't lost.

The Sony Star Wars Trilogy album with John Williams conducting the Skywalker Symphony is a bust of an album. It's really tired sounding performances. If you want a better album, get The Star Wars Trilogy from Varese Sarabande Records with Varujan Kojian conducting the Utah Symphony Orchestra. That's a really great album! And if you want the best, seek out the Charles Gerhardt recordings of Star Wars, Empire and Jedi.

The One Good Thing about the S.E.'s
Time
You are confusing issues and comparing apples to oranges. They are different transfers. You are comparing video transfers that were done 11 years apart. What you are seeing may have absolutely nothing to do with restoration and everything to do with advancements made in video technology, specifically getting better images off of the film. The playing field would be much more fair and level if we had newer video transfers of the original films to compare. At that point I don't think you'd see much of a difference.

STAR WARS: The Torrents thread
Time
Not only are these backups for many of us, they are movies that have been publicly disowned by the creator. This isn't the version he ever intends to sell again.

I can see the MPAA being very concerned about people downloading new movies playing theatrically and actual DVD rips of items that are for sale, but when the owner says that a title doesn't exist anymore and it's been supplanted by something else, that creates a tremendous gray area.

Who has caved?
Time
I still have my original stereo player. And a few years ago, while I was scouring eBay for James Bond CEDs, I bought a lot that had included a copy of Star Wars, so I now have two copies.

I also have the CEDs of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. I got those when they originally came out.

My 1983 CED disc is what is imprinted on me. It was time compressed, pan and scan and featured the original Dolby Stereo mix. I used to watch that disc every day after school when my family first got our CED player. This was even before ROTJ was released. Anytime anything deviates from my memory of that disc, it pulls me out of the film.

Neil, do you still have that disc? Just curious.

Yes.
