VINYLVINYLVINYL!
Time

I inherited a very hefty record collection from my uncle, which included tons of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Grand Funk, various Neil Young projects, and three Jimi Hendrix albums (among lots of others), but I've also supplemented it myself with all of the Beatles' albums from Rubber Soul up through Abbey Road, all but two of Pink Floyd's albums, Devo's entire Warner catalog (and the 12" single from Record Store Day this year), a couple of Radiohead (OK Computer and Kid A), Fleet Foxes' album, and several others. I might post a catalog later.

I also own a really big stack of 78's from my grandmother, but I still haven't gotten a chance to look through them all.

Songs That Tell a Story
Time

Karl Pilkington used to have a feature on the Ricky Gervais's radio show called "Song with a Story", mostly just playing a song that Karl likes ("The Killing of Georgie" by Rod Stewart, "In the Ghetto" by Elvis, etc.) but at one point, they listened to and provided commentary for "Wonderful Tonight" by Eric Clapton because for some reason Karl was convinced it was about "A little fella in a wheelchair".

Hilarity ensues. Also note his thoughts on "Pinball Wizard" at the beginning of the clip:

I'd love to try it out, but I've only got it on PC and it just came out fairly recently for PC (it's $40 on Steam still).

By the way, C3PX, I took your advice and started playing Half-Life again. Damn, I forgot how good this game was! I'm going to finish it this time!

By the way, have you seen any of the GMod Idiot Box videos? I think you might get a kick out of those:

C3PX, if you're into physical game swag, you need to check out some of Telltale Games' deluxe packages. Their Tales of Monkey Island Deluxe Edition comes in a big treasure chest box and comes with a cloth map, coaster (from the club in the game), a pin with Stan on it, a pirate doubloon, a big cloth map, a tarot card, AND the DVD of the game that comes with the special pre-order slipcase!

And don't get me started on the Sam and Max bundles!

Just Cause 2 is one of the few games I can think of where cheating actually makes it better. I don't have any kind of god mode mods for it (that would make it TOO easy), but I do have an infinite ammo mod, which preserves just the right amount of difficulty. I also have a flying/superhero mod, which makes the game WAY more fun. Why grapple/parachute all the way across the island when you can FLY LIKE FUCKING SUPERMAN?! With that mod turned on, it becomes the best superhero game never made (the mod community is actually working on an Iron Man total conversion mod). Another game that gets better with cheating is JK2: Jedi Outcast. God mode + edited sabercolor + dismemberment cheat = what Force Unleashed should have been.

As for Half-Life 2 cheating, I only used god mode for about 5 minutes total near the end, in a really rough patch.

Discussion: What am I up against trying to find a first edition Star Wars paperback?
Time

I've got a hardcover 76 Sci Fi Book Club edition (which I found for $1.50 in a used bookstore :D ), and I don't think there are any forewords/prefaces in it. Although it is interesting to read the character list on the dust jacket and see things like "Chewbacca the Pirate, along with his sidekick Han Solo" :P .

Several hours earlier I found my HALF-LIFE 1 box with the game and of course CD-Key. Activated CD key with Steam and HOLY FUCK it gave me not only options to download HALF-LIFE but also for, and I already did download them, these games:

HALF-LIFE: Blue Shift

HALF-LIFE: Opposing Force

Counter-Strike

Day of Defeat

Deathmatch Classic

Ricochet (never heard of it)

Team Fortress Classic

^I've never played any of those except for of course just HALF-LIFE out of the lot. I wonder why Gunman Chronicles wasn't offered? http://steamcommunity.com/id/the_flash2019/games?tab=all

Not too shabby for entering in a product/CD key of a game I bought back in 2000. Now I'm considering purchasing retail of Left 4 Dead: Game of the Year, Left 4 Dead 2, Counter-Strike: Source (comes with Day of Defeat: Source) and no idea what else. A few Source mods look interesting to me, especially the Zombie one. Already downloaded Nightmare House 2 but haven't played it yet.

Wow! I'm glad you said something about this! I've had a Half-Life GOTY cd sitting around for ages. New games! Yay!

You seem to be under the impression that this is some sort of secret society where your neighbors show their true selves once they give the secret password to get into a weekly gathering.

This might be a side effect of his background as a Jehovah's Witness. Sean, I might be mistaken, but don't they basically have a neighborhood watch going on during the week?

Does it concern only English translations, or other langages too ? Very interesting.

Since Ehrman writes about the original manuscripts, it could be applied to any language.

But regardless, shitty scholarship is shitty scholarship.

Just out of curiosity, what was it that made his scholarship shitty? I seem to remember him being pretty detailed as far as citing his references and what-not.

Favorite movies besides any Star Wars movie
Time

captainsolo, I noticed you listed several Billy Wilder films. Have you ever seen Stalag 17? That one's one of my all-time favorite films.

I also can't believe I forgot to mention Apocalypse Now. That one might be my favorite movie of all time, I'd have to think about it a bit more. :P

A few more good ones:

Moon

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

The Sting

(Paul Newman and Robert Duvall have tied for my "favorite actor ever" spot)

What we like about the Prequels
Time

I will add one more thing to my list. The scene during the final battle when the giant droid carriers park in front of the Gungans, and when the battle droids all activate at once and start marching on them. I know everything after that was pretty terrible, but come on, that was awesome.

This version's been cut up by whoever uploaded it, but you get the idea: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6R9UkpyvSM#t=2m10s
