Another article trying explain away some fans’ critisms:

Apparently the negative opinions are all biased by expectations and such, which then implies that positive opinions are objective?

Why can’t people just stick with explaining why they like or dislike a film, rather than lumping people together in a vain attempt to discredit the opposite side?

Great question. Of course we don’t only see this in film discussions. I think there are lots of reasons. When one is convinced of a certain point of view there is a natural tendency to focus on the weaker arguments of the other side. They’re easier to deal with and confirm the rightness of one’s own point of view. Sometimes bad arguments are made by people with good reasons that they don’t know how to express very well. But that then colors how better arguments are viewed, seemingly tainted by the same bad objections.

There is also the fact that this thing has importance to the people discussing it (see the RLM video clip). So there is a part of people that may feel personally affronted if others don’t share their view. These are obviously generalizations but I think explains why we see some strong views on both sides trying to discredit the other.

I’m not talking disagreement, I’m talking about finding a religious philosophy to be fabricated, unlikable, and out of place in modern society.

That to me sounds like really strong disagreement. ender obviously finds the exact opposite.

As you say, there is a difference between immutable characteristics and beliefs. In terms of invitations to your barbecue, it sounds more like you draw a line at how someone behaves. I imagine that there are philosophies (white supremacy) out there you find so bad they you wouldn’t associate with a person who held them, no matter how polite the person acts. And maybe you wouldn’t be able to abide having a Hasidic Jew over because of the restrictions their religion places on them with regard to interactions between men and women. Or a devout Muslim with similar customs.

I think ender’s call for greater tolerance - even while being able to express disagreement - makes sense. I think ender makes a strong point that people’s “draw to religion is certainly immutable, and the passion and strength that causes a person to cling to such views are not changed as easily as deciding what to have for breakfast.”

That’s not for me to say.

Just asking for your opinion.

I just find it funny. I kind of expected vociferous agreement.

That there is no real news anymore?

That Trump is, to quote Miss Piggy from the The Muppet Christmas Carol, “odious, stingy, wicked, unfeeling, and badly dressed.”

I think objectivity is greatly degraded across all news platforms.

I’m going to try to ask this question earnestly.

How many good things are going for Trump?

I ask it because others may have a view that I don’t have. I’m much more inclined to give a negative response due to my own political views and where I get my news, so I’d like to see what others have to say.

It depends on what you mean by “good” and whether they’re things happening because or despite (or to spite) him. The big ones I see mentioned are: the tax law which included ACA mandate repeal, judicial nominations, strong economy, ISIS defeat in Iraq, recognizing Jerusalem as capital of Israel, assertion of a more muscular foreign policy, his travel ban has been mostly allowed to go into effect, did away with net neutrality, announced withdrawal from Paris Climate Agreement, North Korea wanting to open talks with South Korea, Saudi Arabia shakeup and reforms, opening areas for increased energy production.

Obviously a lot of these depend on your own point of view, but they’re items cited by his supporters.
