Rose is a better character than Lando was. Barely. But still.

Seriously? Lando was a pretty pivotal character and really set all the events in motion for the 2nd half of the movie. He partnered with Vader to trap Luke and in the process got Han nearly killed and shipped off to Jabba (remember?)

No Lando: no cloud city, no luke/vader duel (no “I am your father”), no carbonite, no Jabba, no reason for rotj basically.

What exactly did Rose do that was so important (besides setting free horse-llama things and preventing Finn from committing an act of selflessness)?

They could have easily had all those events happen without Lando I am sure.

You can find a way to remove any character. But Lando added quite a lot and was integral in many ways. I don’t think it helpful to argue otherwise. I am curious how you view Rose.

Most of the movie doesn’t exist without Rose.

Like I said, I thought her character was fine. But I don’t understand what you mean.

I play Galaxy of Heroes, and naturally they are adding new TLJ characters to the game. Rose is apparently coming soon, and people are pissed if the official forum is any guide. People are actually saying she’s worse than Jar Jar.

smh

I can see the argument that her character was unnecessary or uninteresting, but I didn’t see anything that made her detestable. I thought she was fine. The hate for her character seems to come from many different people, not only from those expressing a sexist or racist point of view. And I don’t recall anyone hating on her in this thread in any major way. Maybe as a new main character she’s drawing disproportionate ire.

Is it really this hard for you guys to put yourself in someone else’s shoes for a moment? Someone who isn’t the majority in this country, be it numerical majority (white) or power majority (male)?

This post was gratuitous but maybe some could benefit from this book.

The book description must have been written before 2008, at one point it talks about black people not being able to be President.

It’s from 2006 and Senator Obama is discussed in the book and the author mocks the idea he might become president.

I assume he no longer does that.

I wager that’s right…the author is black and was incredulous that America would elect a black person. So I assume he was pleasantly surprised.

It took me awhile to get the courage to contact the guy who I had previously believed to be my father. Then, like now, I wanted to know what I came from. I approached it as something of an intellectual exercise. Like you, TK-949, I tend to suppress what I feel. In our one meeting, that guy behaved rudely, which was in line with what I had been told, and I didn’t take it personally. We never communicated further, though he promised to send me genealogy information. It was an unfulfilling exercise and so it didn’t feel entirely settled.

What I have learned about my father indicates good qualities, which makes this in some ways scarier than before. Yet I don’t fully know what I hope for. I’m not very close with family and other people that I encounter now. I’m friendly, but not affectionate or effusive. And this here is the probably the most opening up I’ve done on this topic to anyone. To paraphrase Han and Collipso, I could probably use a good hug. Let’s say a metaphorical hug.

I can see that he has been on the site intermittently. I’m going to try to put the right words together.

Val greatly simplifies what was desired by fans and what JJ and RJ produced, but he is not entirely wrong. Obviously Disney & company wanted to make boatloads of money. And you generally don’t do that by trying to alienate people. It hardly needs saying, but “fans” of Star Wars don’t only include certain obsessives who belong to forums and have cabinets full of toys from the 70s, 80s, and beyond. Casual fans are less easily alienated because they don’t care as much. They love Star Wars but they don’t love love Star Wars.

I’m still not sure what JJ was trying to do with TFA. One idea I see floated by admirers of TFA is that JJ was trying to draw fans back to Star Wars, because prequels, or reacquaint people with the franchise, because old, and those rationales always struck me as false and patronizing. Maybe JJ was simply trying to make Star Wars, but new and shiny. People who love TLJ have recognized that the film seems to stick its thumb in the eye of either the fans or JJ. Mithrandir had some good observations as to why RJ might have created the story he did, which wasn’t about any kind of intentional jab (at least not entirely).

I do think an intent behind both films is to enlarge Star Wars’ appeal, which is also obvious if we use our heads. By giving many core fans what they want and also bending the narratives, themes, and characters to appeal to a broader audience, more money can be made. TLJ went very much in this direction and we see it made a boatload of money but despite high quality, a strong voice, and some new exciting visuals, split fandom’s spirit to the bone (to paraphrase Snoke…although I keep wondering how a spirit can have bones).

Like yotsuya says, just because Val didn’t like it doesn’t mean RJ was trying to make him feel that way. (RJ can’t lose for trying!)

So I just noticed on my second viewing that the falcon gets its (new rectangular) radar dish knocked off while flying through the crystal cave (ROTJ Rehash!! ;-P ).

Anyway, what shape do you guys think the new one will be in episode IX? Octagonal? Trapezoidal?

Porg shaped maybe. I wonder what will they do with the Porgs: fly back to Ahch-To? Abandon them on some random planet? Chewie breeds them and uses them as a food source on the Falcon?

Oprah appeals to the more liberal minded people. But if you want Trump gone, we need someone that will appeal to the moderate and conservative-light people. Obviously the liberals are going to vote for the Democrat whoever it is. But the moderates and conservative-light people need to be won over.

Actually, I thought that was what was being attempted with Hillary. As democrats go, she was pretty centrist.

Hillary was hated by too many people.

I think it’s entirely plausible that Oprah’s role in smuggling Uranium to Benghazi via secret e-mails to Vince Foster stored in a private server located in a pizzeria is something that might draw the attention of our crack congressional investigators, if her candidacy starts seeming serious. Then we’ll see how likable this Crooked Oprah is.

But is her husband a creep?

He is also founder of Chicago, Illinois’s AAD (formerly, Athletes Against Drugs), a non-profit organization that provides services to youth and has awarded over $1.5 million in scholarships since its founding in 1985. It also arranged for sports figures to educate children about substance abuse.

Sounds suspiciously like a Clinton foundation-style bribe conduit to me. I’m sure Gowdy’s already been briefed.

Oh, they’re not even married.

Quite possibly the nation’s most blatant and aggressive gerrymander just got struck down.

http://electionlawblog.org/wp-content/uploads/rucho-opinion.pdf

It will be appealed, of course. The real game in the appeal is not necessarily to reverse the ruling, but to try and delay any remedies until AFTER the 2018 elections have already taken place.

We’ll see what the Supreme Court does with the two partisan gerrymander cases it is looking at.

As though his opinion is somehow superior to mine.

No, it’s not my opinion. It’s Nate Silver’s opinion, and yes it’s superior to yours, no question.

By the way, this does not make you an idiot. I never said that and I’m not implying it.

You may not intend it, but sometimes the way you talk and your wisecracks and comebacks and what not make it seem like you think the person you are arguing with is an idiot. I have have felt this way after several arguments/debates with you. Just saying.

I did not say he’s an idiot and I don’t think he’s an idiot. Nor do I think you’re an idiot. You guys can choose to believe me or not.
