Help Wanted: The Prequel Edit Problem - remove the music & sound effects without removing the dialogue...
Time

One of the biggest, and seemingly insurmountable issues all fan editors of the Prequel Trilogy seem to face, is the addition of new music and dialogue to the films. Since the sound has obviously already been mixed, the creative direction that prequel fan edits can go to is very limited.

If this seemingly insurmountable problem was somehow corrected, however, hundreds of possibilities for altering the storyline of the prequels would be introduced.

I know this subject has been brought up before. Many have claimed it’s impossible, to remove the music and/or sound effects from the films without removing the dialogue as well. But through my perusing online, I’ve found several instances where aspiring editors have done just that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8ycYOpltqM

I contacted the editor of this video, but he never got back to me. HOWEVER: this video proves that the removal of music can be done. Now, I suppose the question is: HOW can it be done?

This, to me, is the most important question that fan editors need to answer. It’s imperative if we wish to take this medium to another level. In this thread, I hope we can discover how to accomplish said task.

Help Wanted: Attack Of The Clones - How To Fix This Pooper
Time

Okay, so I’ve come to the conclusion that AOTC is by FAR the hardest Prequel to fan edit.

The mystery plot makes no sense.

The plot structure dissolutes any possibility for tension, and is so jumbled and weird that it’s hard to RE-structure into anything different at all.

There isn’t enough with the Lars Family.

The “forbidden love” subplot is too stupid to leave in, but too major to leave out.

Seriously, the hell is with that mystery plot?

The Seperatists and Dooku are the main villains, but they don’t appear until the very end. And Dooku dies within the first few minutes of Episode III. He has no time to be a major villain.

Seriously…the Clone Mystery Plot. SERIOUSLY.

The effects are horrendous. Just horrendous. Even Episode I looks a million times better.

Those are the UNFIXABLE things IMO. So…fellow OT-Ians…

How would you fix these unfixable things in your respective (or theoretical) fan edits?

I am very very interested in this edit now.
Super radical, man.

I wanna see how this will work!

Thanks.  The purpose in starting the film with Geonosis accomplishes many things better: Anakin and Obi as good friends, Anakin and Padme's growing, yet dangerous relationship, Dooku as the bad guy, and a more interesting way to start off the movie.  Obi will still go to Kamino as "Yoda has taken the remaining few from the volunteer army to save Obi, Anakin and Padme".  There is still the assasination plot, but it is explained in the crawl Padme has been danger for a while now.  The film will reroute itself to the scenes after the arena to finish off the movie, when it is discovered that Dooku/ Fett was behind it all.  The new structure really helps the film, letting me give new context for scenes that would otherwise be cut for certain issues.  Right now the goal film length is a little under 2 hours.

Dude, can you like, make a timeline of the entire film so I can see exactly what you're talking about? Because what you're describing sounds freaking awesome.

I remember seeing a set photo back in the day of the Federation tank and it seemed to be positioned near some Tatooine props because somehow I started speculating that the droid army would invade there which would explain the strong dislike of droids shown in the Cantina scene of ANH and possibly why there were so many for the Jawas to make a living out of salvaging.

I wonder if it would be possible to have the invasion on the desert world and transfer some of the effects to that location.

It would be dramatic to have the fighters swooping down after the podrace and have Qui-gon running to the ship shielding the boy from blasts only to be stopped by Maul.

Naboo could be the next in world targeted or the first world targeted and Tatooine is raided to flush out the Queen.

It would also explain why the Jedi don't allow Anakin to rescue his mother as she she would be on an occupied planet, on of many come AOTC.

The Geonosian scenes could then become scenes on an occupied Tatooine and Anakin would then help liberate his own people as per his childhood dreams.

Shiiiyyyeetttt, this is genius. You all seeing this? This is genius.

That is why I was suggesting a prologue before the film instead of flashbacks inside the movie, which feels even more "unstar warsy" than a prologue.

I like the idea of a prologue....before Phantom Menace.

Why? Because so many of the crucial plot elements: The Sith, The Nature Of The Force, The Jedi, The Formation of the Republic, The Chosen One Prophecy....are glossed over so much in the prequels that you don't even really know what they are.

It'd be nice to have a prologue explaining what the Sith are, what the Chosen One Prophecy means, and what the Force is. Think about it: no one ever actually addresses what the Force IS in Episode I. To a first time viewer, it'd be confusing to have these guys that are just randomly able to push back robots with their minds.

Well, after a long time, I've decided to start work on individual edits of the prequels.  My goal is this is create really good versions of the films without having to butcher the films to the point of making it not Star Wars length like previous edits have done.  I will acheive this using new music, drastic rearragement, and some new vfx to acheive certain edits.

Right now I am in the rough stages of my version of Episode II: The Seperatist Rise. My goals are very similar to other edits, apart from:

  • More Deleted Scenes added (hugely improved HD quality, shhh...)
  • Less cut (only bad dialogue and stupity cut)
  • New arragement (Opening with Kamino, etc.)
  • Lots of new music from Clone Wars, The Old Republic, etc.

Preview Clips:

Fireplace Scene: https://vimeo.com/51874671 (audio cuts still being worked on)

Obi-Jango Fight Scene: https://vimeo.com/52621993 (new soundtrack only.  cues still being modified.  movie audio still being processed)

Opening Shot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-Zaghjtw4A (still being worked on)

Open on Kamino? Whatttt....how will that work with the narrative?

I don't believe that the fireplace-scene can be saved with any editing. It's horrible in every way and the worst scene in AOtC, maybe in the whole PT. I squirm in shared sense of shame every time I see it.

I think that thing is just best cutted. AOTC is the longest of the films and if you are incorporating deleted scenes you still have plenty of running time. Also the info in that scene is somewhat communicated in other scenes so it's not irreplaceable.

Have fun with the edit!

Yes, the fireplace scene was the worst scene in ATOC, but in addition to the dialogue cut, I have moved the scene earlier to their arrival.  Almost every scene between the two have been shifted around to create a more natural romance, one that progesses from simple looks and flurting to kissing and implied sleeping together.  Anakin and Padme eating dinner probably won't even show right before the fireplace scene.

I understand many people perfer not to have the scene, however this scene and the scene where Anakin and Padme first meet again, both have ironic lines: "...you'll always be that little boy on tatooine" and "It would destroy us".  They both humor and foresight respectively.

it's really too bad there weren't scenes with them acting like Han and Leia.

You're forgetting the best line:

Anakin: I can't breathe.

Epic Vader foreshadowing.

... R2 is never referred to as "R2-D2" in ANH (at least I don't think) so it's certainly plausible that Obi-Wan just is confused.  I mean, he has been just chilling on Tatooine for 20 years, lol.

Maybe you should watch the movie again. ;)

"And I am C-3P0, human/cyborg relations...and this is my counterpart, R2-D2"
- C-3P0 (Star Wars: A New Hope)

"R2-D2, it is you. It is you" C-3P0 in the sandcrawler- ANH

"R2-D2, you know better than to trust a strange computer" 3P0 again in ESB

"R2-D2, but y'all can call me 2 Chainz. Was goin' on in dis piece."

Way back I proposed restructuring TPM so it matched the linear progression of ANH (Padme travels from Coruscant to Tatooine to Naboo).

Similarly would a reworking of AOTC work which followed the pattern of ESB.

Starting with Obi-wan getting captured on Geonosis and ending with saber duel?

That way the war starts early in the film, the character scenes happen in the lull between acts and the duel can take place instead on Kamino.

I love this idea. But how to accomplish it?
