Crackling Saber update. https://originaltrilogy.com/post/id/1412710/action/topic#1412710
I’ve taken everyone’s feedback into consideration and tried the most aggressive crackling effect that I could without it looking way too fanedity.
Let me know your thoughts https://youtu.be/KeP-UjY3FwM
It’d be great if someone could tinker with the Sith statue behind Kylo Ren to make it look like Darth Nihilus or Revan.
Gave it a shot:
Mind you, this is a first attempt.
That’s pretty awesome. It really adds to the creepiness and is a good easter egg.
I know we have shots of Star Destroyers blowing up after the Exegol battle (both from the theatrical version locates and some fanedit extras), but are there, or did anyone do shots of those ships arriving at those locations? I swear I thought someone did but I can’t find them anywhere. Am I imagining that?
I’ve done a few shots so far. I’ve got 4 seconds of footage to still finish with 2 other planet ideas but I can’t find or settle on which they should be. The final 2 shots will be star destroyers arriving out of hyperspace but I’ve had a lot of complaints from people saying I’ve used the wrong ships. If anyone knows of any better footage of Palps fleet then please let me know…
In my mind, Han showing up is simply the visual representation of Ben’s inner monologue - he’s not actually there. The scene is just for the purpose of filming something visually. “Leia channeling the Force into a medal that Han wore for 45 seconds one time 30 years ago, in order to project a conscious, sentient image of her dead husband to their son, who is halfway across the galaxy, several hours after her own death (because Finn and Poe have managed to fix the busted, crashed Falcon, leave Endor, and get all the way back to the Resistance before we see Kylo again)”…yeah, I don’t buy it.
If you wanted a visual metaphor for Han, why not use the dice? You know, the dice that were used throughout the previous movie to represent Han?
Did you see my video explaining this exact situation? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueu_fV8lbac
You’re completely on my wavelength
Is it me or does that statues face change 3 times anyway? That would be an easy add I think.
It’s a shame Ben disappears before the light change. I think the ghost effect changes in every movie?
I’ve played around with that cut but I much prefer the order I’ve edited the scenes. I’m gonna have to let Rey’s hand continuety go and focus on the colour scheme.
So, what if the ghosts fade in from red to purple but at full opacity they’re blue?
Deleted scenes would be a game changer! More Mustafar 🤞
Yeah, I did think of how it would explain the logic but I feel it’ll be a subtle introduction to Ben’s healing powers, and the scene to come. Kylo had no reason to fix Vaders helmet because it was a reminder of his battle and cremation.
I’m going with “ultimate power” red lightning following the line “look what you have made…” Palpatine never had the ability to use red lightning before but now he’s drawn power from the dyad it’s made him even more powerful. I also feel we need to give Palpatine something different, something that takes 2 sabers, 4 force ghosts and Rey to defeat. We’ve already seen Palpatine beaten with the powers he possessed in ESB for I feel these changes gives everything more gravitas.
And take your time, MR. I’ll be ready whenever you are able to get it.
Thanks Hal, our lockdown ends at the end of June so I’m trying to get everything finished before then…
and in my version Ben fixes the crystal after it’s teleported.
Does this mean you aren’t planning on working on the effects after that point in the movie?
As I said “Happy to experiment with other ideas”
It’ll be easy to finish what others want at that point but Luka has finished all the layer scenes. I’m just redoing his work by adding particles etc. The first confrontation between Rey & Kylo visually annoys me as Rey’s Saber changes length during the fight as they’ve just masked the shorter prop in post without adjusting the length. I’ll be redoing those clips and making the Saber just skim Kylos face etc.
I’m currently working on a bunch of scenes with other editors so the crackling saber effect has taken a back seat. I’m am working on a few faulty Saber effects to include during the battle and in my version Ben fixes the crystal after it’s teleported. I’m happy to experiment with other ideas too.
One thing I have noticed (perfectionist) is that the new particle layer takes away the crackling effect in the training scene so I wanna get that sharp before moving on.
Palpatines red lightning scenes are looking epic, btw.
That’s interesting. I’ll go research ESB and see.
While colourgrading last night I did notice a stupid continuety issue within the original. When Rey grabs Leias Saber her hand is facing backwards, the following shot it’s facing down and in the following shot her wrist is facing Palpatine. SO, To try and break these shots up, I may be about to tweak is so the ghosts arrive after Palps stops the lightning, thus eliminating this dilemma… maybe! 🤞
Yeah, it would be the first time seeing a force ghost in that type of environment so it’s weird to see and understand how they would act under that lighting. I’ve messaged Jon to see if that’s possible. It would be a great help.
I made this tutorial explaining why/how I’m giving Leia a better send off and allowing Han to have more impact. https://youtu.be/ueu_fV8lbac
This is an image from when Palp has red lightning. Question is, should the Saber reflection be purple, and should the force ghosts still be blue or would the redness of their sky drown out the colour?
I would say the reflection should be a mix of red and purple. As for the ghosts, I guess that depends on how you think the light works on Force Ghosts… I would say they should be grayish because that’s what a translucent blue object would probably look like under a red sky, but the Force Ghosts in the original seem to be light sources of their own, so they should be blue, but that might look unnatural… so maybe a pale blue?
These are the challenges I’m coming up against. I don’t think anywhere in other movies do we see force ghosts under anything other than natural light? Part of me says they should pop and be blue but another says that should be translucent and therefore red. The Saber colour is easy but without the original force ghost layers, it’s gonna be a lot of work changing their colour. I may try and message Jonh to see if he still has them.

Well, that esculated quickly!
Just had a disturbing thought: Do you think Maz Kanata was dying during TROS? She sure seemed rigid, like rigor mortis was setting in.
I think “that’s a story for another time…”
Thanks for in feedback folks. Looking back on the day shots I do think I’ll have to tone down the fiery artefacts and tone down the effect in the cave. Unfortunately I didn’t get passana or our first meeting with zorri template from kewlfish to see his settings but I’ll take another run at it and upload a test scene soon.
Well, I’m thinking Kylo’s was just cracked but Rey’s was completely broken so it would act differently plus Kylo is moreover to the Darkside and Rey seems split. It was just a subtle visual idea that would make the audio easier in the quieter scenes.
@Jar Jar Bricks It’s cool dude. I get a lot worse 😉 I just wouldn’t worry yourself about what other people are doing outside of this forum or at least don’t bring it here if you are. All good here.
What do you think about Rey’s crackling Saber reflecting her mood? I’m just working on the Cave scenes and the aggressive effect really doesn’t look right. What if it’s calm when she is and out of control in battle scenes?
I color corrected and added motion blur to the Ajan Kloss clip from Battlefront 2, there are artifacts and it still looks like a video game, but oh well: https://vimeo.com/512664913
That’s a great job dude but has anyone noticed that brick-like shapes near the centre two white cans move and then disappear? There seems to be a few random artefacts floating around that scene.
I’ve been working on the red lightning scene all day and your LUT looks amazing. It’s making the whole scene so much easier. The only issue I can see is that the scene will have to be red when we first see the force ghosts which doesn’t feel right.
Did you ever do a purple Saber scene with the force ghosts?
My interpretation (with this trilogy of edits) is that the dyad began its inception during the interrogation scene between Kylo and Rey way back in TFA. The seeds were planted there for the dyad.
And then in TLJ, Snoke bridged their minds together so they could now Skype call, which really got the dyad ball rolling. (Not really the smartest plan ever, but hey. Snoke is a fool and thought Kylo would finally try to surpass his grandfather instead of doing the same killing-his-master thing Vader did. It’s fine.) But then they could continue the force Skype calls after Snoke’s direct influence was gone, because the dyad had become that much more powerful and just naturally flowed to take that form of communication. It’s a very Force-ey unexplainable spiritual thing, and I’m fine with it. (Emperor or Snoke didn’t know it could still go on afterwards, maybe?)
And finally, The Emperor wasn’t controlling Snoke’s every move; he just “made” him, as in trained him. And set him up as a figure head in the First Order, as Emperor was trying tirelessly to get a working clone of himself in order. So, he didn’t know what exactly was going on in Rey and Kylo’s heads, other than what Kylo was directly telling the Darth Vader helmet and to Snoke (who, I guess, was relaying it back to Palpy.) The Emperor knew they had a bond, he even says it’s a bond. He’s just surprised that it’s as powerful as it is, sending items back and forth. (He also didn’t know Ben was there in the other part of the building, so that’s also why he was shocked when the Skywalker saber disappeared) He might have only known that Snoke bridged their minds, not that it had materialized into a full blown “unseen for generations” style dyad.Something like this. I dunno. That might not make sense, or somehow contradict itself somewhere, but hey. It’s what I have to work with to make these movies connect properly.
I’m back and forth on the “every voice inside your head” line. On one hand, I can see how it’s kind of unnecessary to have both “I made Snoke” and “I’ve been every voice you have ever heard inside your head” lines back to back. One or the other is enough. But on the other hand, having both lines there doesn’t really take away anything for me, it’s just more explanation. I don’t mind the fan servicey presentation of it. Maybe, yeah, just remove the Vader breathing perhaps, if anything HAS to be changed there.
Basically, I’d only be upset if both lines are totally removed. I need SOME explanation in the actual film. We need to know that Palpatine “made” Snoke. It is important in trying to make this all makes sense, to directly connect Palpatine to Snoke. Not just the First Order, but to Snoke. At least for me. With the removal of the jar of Snokes in this edit, it leans more towards The Emperor meant he merely propped up Snoke, rather than literally created him, which is what we all want to have happen in Ascendant. But we need some of this dialogue to explain it. It’s messy and a little confusing and maybe still unnecessary to some, but I think it should be there. I’m also open to repurposing the lines for later on in the Vader helmet scene, like has been mentioned. Although, it would be weird to not have the Emperor tell Kylo at the start… but I digress. Either way, the line(s) need to not be completely removed, I feel.
ALL OF THIS!
I think the every voice part is one of the parts of the movie that genuinely works. It’s also a quick way of connected palpatine to it all. I think moving it would moving it would cheapen the revelation.
That’s the exact reason I removed it. Quick way and completely unjustified, IMO
I’m surprised they allowed him to post that on star wars reddit. I always get my stuff removed.
Not sure if he’s using a low quality source as there’s a lot of pixel distortion on my screen.
Red Exagol seems to be so much more dramatic. That’s kinda the effect I’m going for during the battle sequence. Nice!
They let him post it because the star wars section on reddit is now full of people who parrot each others opinions and seeing him “fix” the “shit” movie is why they allowed it.
It seems to be one rule for one and different rules for another. I’ve stopped posting on Reddit other than the fanedit page because of so much hostility and trolling.
