I respect the fact that he didn't even try. Costner with a fake British accent could have been pretty awful. What all didn't you like about the Hood staring Kevin Costner, Warb? I sense venom.

yes, I hated that movie with a passion.  Costner was a miscast, and yes, he was speaking with a terribly fake English accent(so much so that in Robin Hood: Men In Tights, they made fun of it).   I also didn't like the fact they added Morgan Freeman's character, just to be P.C.  They also had to P.C. Maid Marion's character.   I also couldn't stand  the fact that they added that witch character.     Alan Rickman gave a terrible performance as the sheriff of Nottingham.   I found it terrible all the way around.  I had to watch the 1938 version multiple times, just to recover.

Say what you like about Costner's flaky accent, but Rickman's performance in that film was spot-on - probably because he wasn't taking it too seriously.

Isn't GOUT's audio track 192k ?
I'm struggling to remember why you rolled your own, if it's believed to be from the same source. Was it something to do with DialNorm matching?

Yes, most 2-channel AC3 tracks on commercial DVDs are 192kbps.

The reason I did my own encode from the LD PCM was alluded to above; there were some reports that the GOUT audio was lacking in dynamic range compared to the LD, so I decided to do my own encode with certain post-processing options (e.g. DC offset filter) disabled.

I really love your Pwnage edition Moth3r, I would like to apply your script to Empire. (will remove the subtitle section in it of course) If I do, do you know if that would introduce any new undesired artifacts to the picture as it is not written for it? or will it work on it at all?

I've just had a look at the script I used (here). Eedi2() caused artefacts in the Leia cell interrogation so I had to add in a special line to catch that. You will need to check carefully that there aren't any similar cases on Empire. Eedi2() has since been superseded by nnedi2(), so it might be worth updating the script to use the newer filter. You should also check that the colour saturation and hue tweaks and the Y-curve adjustment are appropriate.

well, at least this Robin Hood should have no problem speaking with an English accent.

Eh??

don't you remember the Kevin Costner fiasco?

Don't think anyone from the UK could forget that Bryan Adams song - it's permanently burnt into our brains after being in the charts for half the year.

But I believe Hot Rod's point was, why would the Antipodean Russell Crowe be any better at an English accent than the American Kevin Costner? Although I did read that Crowe has been taking intensive voice-coaching to attempt to speak with an accurate North-Notts accent (an accent not too far away from my own).

Is there a big difference between this and the PWNGE? Love the fact that these have a higher quality transfer of the 93 audio straight from the LD instead of the crappy GOUT audio.

dj's GOUT-sourced Star Wars
Audio 1: '93 mix DD 2.0s @ 384kbps (from LD PCM)
Audio 2: '93 mix upmixed to DD 5.1 @ 448kbps (from LD PCM)
Audio 3: '77 mono mix DD 1.0 @ 96kbps (from Belbucus restoration)
Average video bitrate: 6500kbps
Total disc size inc. menus, etc: 6.43GB

Lucasfilm Pwnage Edition
Audio 1: '93 mix DD 2.0s @ 192kbps (from LD PCM)
Audio 2: '77 mono mix DD 1.0 @ 96kbps (from Belbucus restoration)
Audio 3: '77 Dolby Stereo mix DD 2.0s @ 192kbps (from LD analogue cap)
Average video bitrate: 4500kbps
Total disc size inc. menus, etc: 4.37GB

As you can see from the specs above, both mine and dj's discs have audio track 1 sourced from the LD PCM.

I used 192kbps as it is Dolby's suggested data rate for 2-channel AC3. I suspect that most people would not be able to tell the difference between the compressed AC3 and the uncompressed PCM in an ABX session, but those with "golden ears" and expensive hi-fi's might fare better with dj's 384kbps.

Dynamic range compression (DRC) is a separate issue from audio data compression. I was under the impression that the GOUT audio was from the same source as the DC laserdiscs, so it's surprising to see reports of DRC in the GOUT audio.

Sorry if this sounds obvious, but are you sure that DRC is disabled in your Dolby Digital decoder?

Another potential source of DRC is the DD encoding process itself. Dolby licensed encoders generally include pre-processing filters that are turned on by default, intended to make the audio data more compressible. I have heard that these filters can reduce the dynamic range of the input signal, although this is only secondhand, I have no hard evidence to support this. TBH I doubt that this is the cause of the DRC that hairy_hen noticed on TESB - but to be safe, I turned all these filters off when I encoded the audio for Pwnage.

I have no need for it but rather than copying the whole disk and replacing audio tracks why not just release the various dubs as MP3 files that people can play while watching their existing SW:R disc?

MP3 is not a valid audio format for DVD.

Re-authoring a DVD with a replacement AC3 audio track is not difficult; Adywan issued fixed audio and instructions on how to do this for his TPM Theatrical Version release.

doesn't matter how long someone has been around. a stupid comment is a stupid comment. non contructive.

rather him hold it in, like a fart or it will stink, and i do smell something from his comment.

Who are you?

I have been around for a long time, and when I give advice such as that in Post 669 I'm not making stupid comments - I'm totally serious.

Although it's a shame when a project is marred by "technical issues", I predicted that something like this would happen, and if it was predictable, it could have been avoided.

Both Ady and I have tried to help Asteroid-Man by requesting sample clips to help work out what these "technical issues" are, which he has so far not bothered to provide.

I'm not saying I've never screwed up myself - but at least I can admit to my own failings and not blame it on shoddy Canadian DVDs (which, FYI, are likely to be identical to the US releases just with the addition of some French text on the DVD cover).

And if Asteroid-Man find these comments hurtful, he needs to grow a pair and toughen up if he wants to be taken seriously.

Warb, I suggest you change the name of this thread to Hello all, I'm back! / Who is Ignoring You?

does anyone have any objections to me doing this?  mods?

Not at all, it's good practice to update the thread title when the discussion turns to a different subject. In fact, back in the day there was a fairly common convention for flagging a Usenet discussion subject change using the form thus:
Who is Ignoring You? (was: Hello all, I'm back!)

I'm being ignored by vbangle, possibly as retaliation for me ignoring him at one point, and Jedi Temple34, possibly because I once told him to remove a 0.5MB animated GIF from his sig.
