***The NEW "official" Screenshots thread ***
Time

I'm thinking I probably should revive my old screenshot comparison page and update it to enable users to compare the various Custom DVDs that are now available.

I've managed to retrieve the page from various sources (it was hosted on the now defunct Geocities, and I never made a proper backup). Any suggestions for a free web host to use now?

Why does Mr. Bean fall from the sky?
Time

I'm going to be boring, and quote Wikipedia:

At the beginning of episode two onwards, Mr. Bean falls from the sky in a beam of light, accompanied by a choir singing Ecce homo qui est faba ("Behold the man who is a bean "). These opening sequences were initially in black and white in episodes 2 and 3, and were intended by the producers to show his status as an "ordinary man cast into the spotlight". However, later episodes showed Mr. Bean dropping from the night sky in a deserted London street, against the backdrop of St. Paul's Cathedral suggesting Bean is an alien. Atkinson himself has acknowledged that Bean "has a slightly alien aspect to him"; in the animated series, he was actually shown to be an alien.

Is there a good way to remove hard-coded subtitles from a film?
Time

The first thing you would need to do is ensure that both sources are exactly the same running time - you may need to trim frames from one of the sources to get them both to line up frame-for-frame.

You would then need to upscale the laserdisc source in such as way so that the picture information in each frame aligns with your HD source to the nearest pixel. You may also need to tweak the contrast, brightness and colour to get the sources to match as best as you can.

The next step is then to overlay the LD video over the top of the subtitles. The simplest way would be to use a constant rectangle over the region of the subtitles, but this may end up distracting due to the quality difference in the videos, and if there is any significant telecine wobble in either of the two it will probably look awful.

A better result can be obtained by using third video that contains a mask for the subtitles. It may be possible to create the mask automatically if the subtitles are easily distinguishable from the video, for example if they are bright white and the rest of the video is darker, but in all probability you will have to create your mask video manually - and this means a lot of work if the subtitles appear all the time!

The advantage of using a mask is that only those parts of the LD video that lie directly over the subtitles will end up being overlayed on your HD source, so it's potentially less distracting. You could also feather the edge of the mask to blend the two sources together and avoid any hard edges.

The above process is based on my experiences with AviSynth, but there may well be a much neater workflow with a pro editor like FCP, After Effects, Vegas etc.

Most Egregious Sci-Fi "Science"
Time

I read somewhere that the script originally had Biff "fading away" after returning to 2015. This was scrapped, as they thought that the audience may wonder why the car didn't fade away as well.

This plot hole has always bugged me, and affected my enjoyment of BTTF 2. I guess I must have an autistic streak.

Another bit of bad science I've just remembered is in "Lord of the Flies", something I actually commented on in my English lesson back when we read the book at school. If Piggy was short-sighted, his glasses would have concave lenses, and thus been useless for creating fire. William Golding, You Fail Physics Forever.

Editdroid's SW 1977 DVD (Mysterious 720p Anamorphic LD Preservation?) (Released)

He said it was done by a professional editor, who restored the film himself from the LD using professional-grade tools.

This is what your friend said. Not very specific at all.

The DVD video was created using the 1993 non-anamorphic LaserDisc version...

This is the text from the disc itself. Note it say "laserdisc version" and not just "laserdisc". I take this to mean it is sourced from the GOUT DVD.

Also, the GOUT has way more aliasing on R2's red glowy thing.

I think that's just been blurred away by the upscale.

I think the "aliasing" you are seeing there is actually a product of a YV12 - RGB colourspace conversion with no chroma upsampling.

Guys, I'm gonna have to insist that you follow the forum rules, in particular this one:

1. No discussions about financial transactions except for the buying, selling, or trading of official retail media.

What you do with your own money off the forum is your business, but we do not condone the buying and selling of bootlegs and I don't want to see that kind of discussion here. Thanks.
